There was a machine which was recording telePhone Calls coming into a Trading Floor. Phone Ringing [unidentified man] hello . [unidentified man] people are jumping off the building. [unidentified man] from how high . Phone Beeps [unidentified man] i saw people running On Fire through The Streets. I saw People Diving Out. People were diving out of the World Trade Center. Phone Beeps And rings [unidentified woman] yeah . [unidentified man] honey, i just want to let you know, a plane just hit the World Trade Center, im okay. unidentified Person Sobbing [narrator] this is the first time we have heard these voices in 20 years. [man] jerry, do you believe you wanna hear something . It just happened again, jerry. Phone Ringing [narrator] the story of The Machine begins in texas with a man by the name of Rick Harold. [melissa] hello . [unidentified man] hi. [melissa] hi. [unidentified man] something very bad has happened. [melissa] i know, i saw you all on about it. [unidentified man] melissa, its its so sick, its unbelievable. I saw people on i saw people running On Fire through The Streets. [narrator] in 2010, rick purchased The Machine from a man selling used Computer Parts with hopes of reselling it for a profit. My name is Rick Harold, And i found The Machine. There was this guy that had gotten it. I knew him from this little place. He had all sorts of weird things. He bought a bunch of them. And that was the only one with something on it. [interviewer] how much did you pay for it . 300. [narrator] not knowing exactly what he bought rick took The Machine home, plugged it in And turned it on. [rick] we sat there And listened to it And it was just shocking. Totally shocking. [interviewer] did you know what they were talking about . [rick] oh yeah. It was, radical. [narrator] rick knew he had uncovered recorded Phone Calls from the morning of September 11th somewhere close to the World Trade Center. But The Machine was damaged, And the calls were scrambled And broken. He ended up connecting it with a Data Recovery Specialist in New York, a man by the name of Andy stevens. soft Guitar Music so My Names Andy stevens. Im an electrical engineer. I attended mit And columbia. I get a Phone Call out of the blue. And he said, i have some tapes that were from a voice recorder. He explained that he had taken these tapes to a couple of different outfits And nobody had been able to replay the tapes. [narrator] rick had The Machine shipped to Andys lab And he immediately got to work. He began by recovering the data on the damaged magnetic tapes with hopes of retrieving the lost calls. So this is an Eyretel Media Store recorder. And it would record onto these tapes. This is whats called a dds3 data tape, And it will hold several thousAnd hours of recorded audio. Recorded telephone quality audio. [narrator] The Machine was commonly installed in Wall Street banks, specifically on Trading Room floors. If they had a Trading Floor, say, with 32 desks, then all 32 desks would get recorded all the time every Phone Call in And out. And then there would be open microphones on the Trading Floor as well. In case the trader over here wanted to say something to the trader over there, it would get picked up by these open microphones. [narrator] Andy was able to recover the data on the tapes using a technique known as splicing. Allowing the lost audio to be played back. [unidentified man] im at my desk. [unidentified man] did it affect you at all . Are you in that building . [unidentified man] no, im across The Street from the building. I heard the explosion, i saw all the debris coming down. [unidentified woman] World Trade Center number one, first financial number one. When i look out my window, that buildings connected to me by a bridge. [narrator] there was no denying what was on the recovered tape. These were calls made from a Trading Floor at one World Financial. Directly across The Street from the World Trade Center. On the morning of tuesday, September 11th. [Andy] looking out the window And watching Body Parts fall out of the sky thats got to have some effect on them. And i think it was a day that changed everyones lives And those people even more so because they had eyeballs right on it happening. I just watched it on tv myself, so i didnt quite get the full effect. [narrator] but a question still remained, how did that specific Machine End up in texas . Where Rick Harold bought it. In the large chaos that happens after something like 9 11, And you know, liquidation. When i say liquidation, i mean someone shut down that office, liquidated it, And had all this equipment that had to be accounted for And maybe moved over to the new location. And somehow this one fell off the back of the truck. You know, so i could see it happening very easily. In the aftermath of some major catastrophe it could easily happen. soft Guitar Music My Name is Gregg Spiegelman. I am a father. I am a husbAnd. I am an entrepreneur, And im also a farmer. My names Jon Kolsky And during 9 11, i was a trader for a company called cibc. My name is judith wargaski, And ive been married to alan for a little over 20 years now. My names is alan wargaski, im cfo for a home textiles company. My dad was in the business, my uncles theres a lot of Family History on Wall Street, And so, i was really born into the business. My Names Michael palazzi. I started on Wall Street in 1985 for oppenheimer. I was a comanager of the nasdaq sales And trading desk. I was born And raised in manhattan, in New York. Went to school in dc, washington dc. George washington university. Met my wife there, graduated, went back to New York. I started working in finance, cibc world markets. I grew up in new jersey, went to fairleigh dickinson. Met my wife, we started dating, got married, moved into the city. I started my career at lehman brothers, And, actually, i was there on the 93 bombing as well. [interviewer] so are you happy that these calls got unearthed . I would never have thought about it at all. It was And then once i heard about it im like, wow, this is nuts. And i remember him calling me a few times from the office. Im a little nervous to hear it. One of the producers called me And said, were doing a 9 11 story, And told me about the tapes. And they said, is this is the same Gregg Spiegelman that worked at cibc in 2001 . [michael] they forwarded me the piece, i listened to it. Didnt take me long since i said, hey, its palazzi. Kind of a dead giveaway. Thats me. I wanna hear this . Do i wanna not hear this . My sister said, i remember calling you, And you told me that there were People Jumping out of buildings And you were crying. The question started to come up And i want to know. I decided at that point. I called them right from there on my ride home. I said, ill do it. So im about to listen to the calls of 9 11 from my office. And all the calls were recorded coming in And going out. The microphones that were hanging, were recorded. So im about to hear it for the first time in 20 years. [interviewer] what are you thinking right now . Im nervous. I have one recollection of a conversation that i had with one of my customers And great guy i used to work with, And i remember that conversation. But other than that, i really dont remember being in that moment at all. As part of being a regulated industry we were required to tape our lines. And you do that for two reasons. For compliance And for client safety. For example, if theres a dispute And your client says, i gave you an order to buy a stock, you took an order to the sell a stock, we go back to the tape. And there were ambient mics above the Trading Floor so that the regional offices could hear the flow in the room. [unidentified man] the order reads for 50. Youre saying youre seeing an order of 50 for that . [unidentified man] yeah, indistinct . Aeg buy 50. Suspenseful Music Plays People Shouting [unidentified woman] oh my god. They just blew up the top of the World Trade Center. [unidentified man] honey, i just wanna let you know, a plane just hit the World Trade Center, im okay. He survived the bombing at the World Trade Center back in 1993. On the morning of September 11th, 2001, he had arrived early. Checking on trades from the day before. Jerry is now survived by his Daughters Joann And kathleen kirkwood. He got up early at the crack of dawn. Definitely had a large cup of coffee on the way to the subway. Went downtown. I think, at night, my mom said he used to have Trouble Sleeping if it was too much money on the line. Yeah, he had to carry the books overnight. Jerry was a legend. Hes an oldtime Wall Street guy. He was the consummate work hard, play hard guy. Cibc. Hey jerry, its jeff. Yes, jeff . Sorry to bother you. Its still not hitting on our Trading System yet. Hold on, i looked It Up this morning. I thought it did, i hit them all up. [kathleen] back 20 years ago, it was the last hold of pencil, paper, pen. [joann] he was the last person in his division left. Every other company had made the final switch to computer, digital trading, all that. And so he was from a different time, but he found a niche And that was international trading. Working on Wall Street when i did was, from what i can tell now, is way different back then. It was fast paced. It was high energy. It was a lot of money that we were trading in for our clients. A lot of voices, a lot of noise, a lot of focus. It was constant mayhem. [unidentified man] so it was 119, 100 to one of five 19, right . Theres an incredible amount of energy that is in that room at all times. People are working, people are focused. There werent a lot of women there, so And you had to be really tough. [unidentified man] attention everybody, please do not talk to tom about his unfortunate stock purchase. There was always, it would be a couple of practical jokers in there at all the time. Working next to the twin towers, you couldnt help but notice the magnitude of the buildings, how large they were. You know, you took it for granted because they were just the fixture of the city. They were attached, so there were three i think one, two, And three World Financial. Smaller buildings that are still there. There was one big attachment to the World Trade Center. [gregg] when i started, i was young. I had just started in the business. So as a kid, i collected things, baseball cards, coins, medals, typical things. But i also remember people collecting, before my time, Newspaper Articles when kennedy was shot or first man on the moon. So for some reason, i just decided to start collecting as many of the articles as i could find the days after September 11th. And then the years, anniversaries after that. Just to keep a piece of history. To never forget. I have an image of a Trading Ticket that i had kept. And on it, you can see the date, September 11th, 2001. Its my hAndwriting. And obviously me taking a report of some trade that i was told to do. And then, when i was helping down there, somebody had snapped a polaroid picture of me And hAnded it to me. And thats me that day. The most interesting thing, obviously how young i am, but is that, 9 11 01, you can see in the photo im wearing a n95 mask, which i dont think anybody knew what they were until last year. And then here we are again wearing a mask for a whole different reason. But theres the document that i wrote myself a couple of days after. Just documenting everything i can remember. Phone Dialing Phone ringing [unidentified man] good day. [unidentified man] whats up . We are with the abn group. Abn indistinct [unidentified man] does that say indistinct . [unidentified man] yeah. Yeah. [unidentified man] you did see the indistinct for bloomingdale, right . Well, traders always get in early. So, where a lawyer might get into the office more like like 9 30, 10ish, traders were always usually at their desk. Some of them, when i did international stuff, wed have to be in the office by 6 30. On the morning of September 11th, it was just a typical day. It was kind of like today, was kind of cool. The skies were crystal blue. It was strange cause i was on the desk And we heard this boom. Suspenseful Music Plays People Shouting [automated voice] when you have finished recording, you may hang up or press one for more options. [lynne] christy, call me back, its lynne. Somebody screamed, the canadian desk was right near the window, And someone screamed, oh my god, they just hit the World Trade Center. [unidentified woman] oh my god, they just blew up the top of the World Trade Center. My building shook like you would not believe. [unidentified man] get out of here. [unidentified woman] i can see it out my window, theres a big hole. [narrator] the vibration from the explosion instantly reminds Jerry Kirkwood of the bombing of the World Trade Center from 1993. [unidentified man] hey buddy, how you doing . You all right . [jerry] im doing fine, it just scared me for a minute because i was here when a bomb went off, like eight years ago. [reporter] you are looking at the North Building of the twin towers of the World Trade Center in manhattan. These are coming to you live now. Phone Ringing [unidentified woman] hello . [unidentified man] hey honey, its me. [unidentified woman] hi. Yeah . [unidentified man] honey, i just want to let you know a plane just hit the World Trade Center, im okay. [unidentified woman] oh, i just Oh My Goodness its coming on the news, Oh My Goodness. [unidentified man] it happened right outside my window. We all looked at Each Other And said something was definitely wrong. Many of the people on the Trading Floor immediately began running towards the window to see what had happened. As i looked down from the eighth Floor Window towards The Street, i could see chunks of metal all over The Street, cars On Fire, buildings catching On Fire. And then i looked up at the World Trade Center. There was something straight out of a horror movie, a gigantic building with a burning hole in the side of one of the towers. So i actually, with the canadian traders, went down the stairs to evacuate. Everybody jumped down right away And everybody wants to run to the windows. And theyre like, evacuate, evacuate. Everybody evacuate. Lets go, now. So we all start running. We had to run towards the stairs. And the guy that ran the trading desk, he had not talked to the Fire Marshall yet. So he brought us all back in, he said, listen, i havent talked to him yet. I dont know whats going on. Theres debris coming towards our window. And he said, i dont want anyone to get hit by anything. You gotta come back. So we came back And i was crying. And then people started calling in to ask if we were okay. [narrator] this is the first time joann And kathleen have heard their Fathers Voice from the morning of September 11th. [jerry] what happened . [unidentified man] yeah, a Plane Crashed into a building. [jerry] Holy Beep . Its right here, im looking at it. Everybodys running here. [unidentified man] yeah its right outside. [jerry] Holy Beep . Let me call you right back, yeah. [narrator] when the towers were hit, jerry immediately picks up the phone And tries to reach his daughters. Phone Ringing [jerry] yeah, joanne scully, please. Oh [unidentified woman] let me see if shes in. Hold on, please. [jerry] okay. [operator] i dont believe shes in yet. [jerry] okay. This is important, okay . This is her dad. [unidentified woman] okay, dad. Now, i work downtown on Wall Street. [unidentified woman] uhhuh. [jerry] okay. Im all right. Everything a plane just hit the World Trade Center. [unidentified woman] oh my god. [jerry] all right . So she might be nervous because i work right across The Street. [unidentified woman] yeah, you know your daughter. [jerry] yeah, yeah. [unidentified woman] ill let her know youre fine. [jerry] please, if she calls in or when she comes in. [unidentified woman] i will. [jerry] just let her know im fine. [woman] yeah, im going to send a text, so you wont have to worry. I will definitely tell her. [jerry] okay. [unidentified woman] all right . [jerry] okay. [unidentified woman] ill tell her to call you at work indistinct . [jerry] indistinct thats fine. Were doing my normal stuff. [unidentified woman] okay oh my god, what happened . [jerry] its all out there. indistinct i saw smoke i think on top of the Employees Chattering a Plane Hit the Trade Center, its On Fire on top of the Trade Center. [unidentified woman] aw, terrible. Suspenseful Music Plays Phone Rings [unidentified man] yeah, indistinct . [unidentified woman] hey. [unidentified man] hi. [unidentified woman] hey. [unidentified man] who are you looking for . [male reporter] its speculated that the plane is as big as 737. It looked originally like it just hit 3 floors.
