Over quickly, he said kabul was not under immediate threat. He said the airport was safe, he said all americans and our allies and be protected and his rush to leave afghanistan and americans were left behind. Our Military Equipment was left behind and they fear part of Americas Reputation was left behind two. As america and our allies try to make sense of this deadly ritual, the taliban is rejoicing they fire the guns america left behind in celebration and mocked funerals with coffins draped with american flags, america hurried out into private he rushed in. Members of the taliban are going Door To door with execution and hunting those translators and allies who helped us for 20 years. For those wondering what will happen if you remind yourself of the united states, the answer for some is this. You will be left behind and on your own Love History of Joe Biden being wrong is enhanced. The same man who wanted to wait to kill Osama Bin Laden get out of a country that aided and abetted Osama Bin Laden. Joe biden told you that america is back. It doesnt see that way does it, it looks like america is gone. In the taliban is back joining me now is someone who knows the killing of Osama Bin Laden hes the host of Fox News sunday and the bestselling author whose new book countdown Bin Laden the untold story of the 247 Day Hunt to bring a mastermind of 9 11 to justice on tuesday. Chris wallace. Thank you so much for having me. Is there a meaningful distinction, youre an expert on these matters but for us normal viewers between the taliban, alqaeda and isis. There is definitely a distinction that the alqaeda obviously was the group of the islamic jihadists that perpetrated 9 11. Isis is a Rival Group in the taliban is a Rival Group allied with alqaeda but at odds with isis. Ive got to tell you something that is in my new book and told for the first time goes directly to your point about Joe Biden. You know how i fear for Bob Gates the Defense Secretary wrote in his memoir that Joe Biden had been wrong about every major foreign Policy Decision for the last 40 years. He had said that to people in the administration theyre having a meeting in the situation room, are they going to go attack Bin Laden at the compound, they dont know hes there or not and Biden Gates are the only two top officials who speak out about this and on the way back to the Pentagon Gates is riding back with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs Mike Mullen and he says youve told me that biden has been wrong on every foreign Policy Decision for the last 40 years, how come you are agreeing on not going after Bin Laden. This is the subject of some concern Joe Biden fighting on Foreign Policy even when he was Vice President of the united states. He raised his point did he have a justification for wanting to wait to kill Bin Laden high point. What was the rationale for waiting. I think there was two reasons because there was no hard evidence that Bin Laden was even there, it was a circumstantial case when President Obama makes a decision, some people think is 40 some thinking 60 forget the percentages its 50 50, either hes there or not and there was two things running against him, maybe if you wait longer you can get more and better intelligence and they havent found the Smoking Gun that he was there in the second thing, there was a chance the risk of the mission if he is there, even if he isnt your gonna be going into pakistan 160 miles inside of pakistan without telling the pakistani government that we were depending a lot on the pakistani to give us the supply lines, The Roots to send supply into our troops with fighting the War In Afghanistan and the concern we dont know for going to get them and it could really kick off the pakistanis and cut off our access to afghanistan. I will tell you why he said that in gates was also against it, everybody off the chairman of the joint chief, cia director, hillary clinton, national security advisor, all of them were for it. You mentioned the former Chair Joint Chief let me play you a quote from the current chair of chief to get your reaction on the other side. We dont know what the future of the taliban is but i can tell you from personal experience that this is a ruthless route in the past and whether or not that they change remains to be seen in war, you do what you must in order to reduce risk and force, not necessarily what you want to do. The coronation against Isis K. It is possible. Trey to be sure, it looks like president past and present were willing to deal with the taliban. Yes, President Trump made the Deal And Secretary of State Pompeo was the first american Secretary Of State to meet with the taliban and conclude a piece and i dont think anybody has any illusions about the taliban their vicious, Love Thirsty Group they presided and gave Safe Haven to alqaeda when they attack the homeland on 9 11 but sometimes you want to put them to the test and see, i suspect it wont be a Government Acceptance of them in a formal recognition and given the fact that there are different facts of the taliban and Isis K addon to each other if the taliban helps us take out Isis K where we can take out Isis K, we might test that to see whether or not its going to happen, one of the points i want to make about my book we all feel lousy all americans, not about getting out but the way that we got out the fact that theres hundreds of americans left and Tens Of Thousands of afghans but Bin Laden takedown in 2011 was a success we took down the mastermind of 9 11 and we degraded alqaeda that was not an attack on the u. S. Homeland that intimated out of afghanistan for 20 years and we can take real pride in that. This is a History Thriller i take you behind the scenes, the intel community, the military community, the political community working together flawlessly and as poorly as they did this year in these last few weeks they work together flawlessly to launching succeed in this mission. Precongratulations on your book all the divisiveness in our country i think there is complete unity on wanting to have Osama Bin Laden gone and ill look forward to reading the real story of how that happened. Trey thank you so much i think youll enjoy it, you know how the story ends but i promise you youll be turning the page and to say what happened next. I look forward to it, thank you for joining us. Trey coming up in the wake of our departure from afghanistan, how does the worldview us, what is our exit doing to our global reputation with the changing view of some of our allies next on Sunday Night america. As Joe Biden was coercing afghan president to create a perception that the taliban were not winning whether it is true Bidens Perception around the world to the temple. Our closest allies ones that have stood by us for 20 years as we wage multiple wars in the middle East Criticized Bidens disastrous and deadly withdraw from afghanistan. He is a commanderinchief to question the courage of men that i fought with to claim that they ran safely. Trey World Leaders from france, germany, england and including our next guest spoke out against the united States Decision to withdraw from afghanistan and the manner in which we did, some instances the president did not bother to pick up the phone and speak to our allies before the taliban had complete control of kabul symbolizing the in and ultimate failure of her 20 year war. What did we actually accomplish besides Seating Afghanistan to the taliban and alienating our allies did our decision to leave afghanistan leave the rest of the world vulnerable tom served in afghanistan is that emotional wounds have been torn open and he joins me no, welcome to you. Thank you. I watched your for speech and i want to know what you meant about emotional wounds torn open but used another word that caught my attention not just the word abandon, that is a strong word particular when the two closest allies in the world are speaking to one another and thats how americans view great britain, what did you mean by the word abandon . I was talking specifically about the afghan people and the sacrifice that many of them have made in many veterans whether american, british, australian, german and the others have made to in the feeling amongst many of us in the community is those efforts and sacrifices have been abandoned and you can see that today in afghanistan by the fact that you have a government that respects the decision to not be in kabul anymore a terrorist organization. I would command your Floor Space for anybody who has not seen it was passionate but reasoned which is a powerful combination and emotional wounds torn open use served, is that what you were referring to or were you referring to something else when you say emotional wounds being torn open. Really to me its a strong feeling of grief and we buried a lot of friends and we walked away from others. And ive sat alongside afghan troops that have fought just as hard as any other they fought courageously and they fought courageously alongside and i saw time and again, afghan troops find it incredibly hard into see them abandon it reawakens the feeling of the trail that a lot of us feel. Trey the debate of who had the better withdrawal plan, is there an argument coming from an ally who served, is there an argument that we should maintain the presence and we should not of withdrawn at all. Theres a very strong argument i understand the team in the White House is thinking, i get that they will not focus on the clear throughout the receipt from china and as you know the China Research Group in the Uk Parliament and is being worn very strongly about the different ways in which Chinese Communist Party is threatening. I understand the attempt to focus but that is part of the Building Block of liberty into a half thousand troops in afghanistan 750 british troops compared with the 30000 that we have in South Korea with 50000 in japan and thousands more in Germany And Part of being a role of an international player, we do it, you do it, thats what gives us strength in reach and three decisions by three President S of the united states in recent years effectively undermining that strength in first when President Obama had a timeliness in the second with President Trump with the Unconditional Surrender of the united states forces. At doha in the third is when president biden left. Trey thank you for joining us, but most of all thank you for your service in afghanistan, the best to you. Still ahead its been nearly 20 years since the Terror Attacks on September 11, 2001 and it appears we just left afghanistan in the same state it was in which we arrive two decades ago, are we opening ourselves up to a new Terror Threat that is next on Sunday Night america. It was a happy morning in our home, September 11 is my wifes birthday. We got our children ready for school and i headed to the courthouse where i was prosecuting a Murder Case and then the media reports began to come in over the radio a plane had struck one of the Twin Towers in new york. I saw a Police Officer stopped at a Gas Station and did what many of us do in times of Turmoil And Uncertainty i turned to someone in a uniform and that Police Officer and i sat together and listen to the radio and sat in silence. A second plane had struck a second tower. When i got to the courthouse the jury was sequestered and the judge made the decision not to tell them what was happening. We went on with the murder trial. It was surreal and assents to act as if Life Goes On when we all suspected. It is really been changed forever. In a sense of security that we felt as a nation were shattered, this country bordered by oceans and allies was attacked. Our way of life was attacked. The way that we travel was forever changed. The way that we view religion was changed. The world shrunk, extremism across the globe was now in major u. S. Cities. Everything that we knew was suddenly at risk, sporting events and national monuments, the symbols of our government, our very way of life, Terrorism Kills but also robs, it kills innocent people and a distorted view of religion and robs those left alive of security of peace of the way things used to be there is no silverlining when it comes to what happened to our country on September The 11th there is no good that can come from that kind of evil. There is just a residue clarifying residue reminding us of whats important in life. When we think of our fellow americans trapped in towers picking whether to burn to Death Or Jump to death, there is clarity in their final acts there is clarity in their final thoughts and there is clarity in their final phone calls. Then theres the clarity of what we ask others to do we ask some to run toward the fire and the destruction and toward the danger even if it means your own death. Death and Grief And Pain can bring clarity about whats important in life and precisely what it is we are willing to fight to preserve and from that can community Death And Grief and pain can be unified. And we witness that unity in the aftermath of 9 11 black, brown and white hands joined together, people of different religions pray together, politics did not matter, geography did not matter, nothing that divides us or separates us matter. Whatever differences were previously perceived felt so inconsequential because we were unified in our Heart Ache and unified in our resolve and unified in her anger. There was Clarity And Unity in the aftermath of 9 11. We said we would never forget, we said we would remember forever, we said we would hunt those who Hurt Us and seek to Hurt Us and destroy our way of life. We said we would hunt them to the ends of the earth. And now 20 years later the unity has been replaced with the memories of the unity. The clarity has been replaced with ambiguity there are now american politicians who call other americans terrorist, there are now american politicians who cant seem to tell her friends from her and amys. In the weapons of War American Ingenuity and you pay for are now in the hands of terrorist in the very region of the world and in the first place for some forever to be slightly less than 20 years. And some hunting our enemies to the ends of the earth apparently does not include afghanistan. And for some the clarity and the unity are long gone, the 20th Anniversary of 9 11 may be the ideal time to remind ourselves in each other of what we went through, what are brothers and sisters lost, what our country lost, a great country should have a lot of memories. We told ourselves we would never forget we told ourselves we would never forget how we felt the morning of September 11, 2001 and every morning thereafter. For weeks and months to come. We pledge to each other we would never forget and maybe this year is the year that we remember that we promised each other we would always remember in addition to remembering what happened on 9 11 we should remember what we promised each other on 9 11 and maybe in the power and the pain of that recollection we can find unity once again. Joining me now the former governor of new Jersey Tom Kaine whod cochaired the 9 11 commission, welcome and thank you for your service to our country. Thank you, congressman good to be here. Trey take us back 20 years, youve done a lot of remarkable things in your career, the decision to accept the invitation to cochair of this commission in your most vivid memories of your time is cochair. Most vivid memory is when the president asked me too do it Henry Kinzinger had been asked originally and he could not do it because of his plans, that was the second choice and he asked me if i would share the commission and i felt like a ton of bricks had fallen on me, hadnt expected the call i had been out of politics for a while but to say yes and the president of the united states of a national emergency ask you to do something you dont think about it you just say yes and try to deal with afterwards. Trey its been 20 years but i cannot help but think theres certain things we need to remind ourselves of that we do vividly in the aftermath that maybe our memories have faded, are there certain things you wish you could tell everyone, you need to remember this. We need to remember the moment why we went into afghanistan to begin with because that is where the terror came from thats where Bin Laden framed the fighters thats where all the planning originated and thats where the attack came from and we were in afghanistan because we asked the taliban to give up Bin Laden and stop supporting him. They said no and we said if you wont do that we are coming for him and thats how the war originally started and we did very, very well, now we got a look at afghanistan is that again going to be a Breeding Ground for terrorists . Because if it becomes breeding after terrorist and if Alqaeda Or Isis or any of those planing attacks against the homeland were gonna have to send troops back in, theres no question about it. Trey it sounds like we have come Full Circle and not in a good way, we asked the taliban for something 20 years ago and they said no and were somewhat dependent on the good graces of the taliban 20 years later, surely there had to be another purpose of going into afghanistan other than simply killing Osama Bin Laden. Its a Breeding Ground for terrorism. Has that changed over the last 20 years. We dont know that yet. No question that we know isis and we know alqaeda is still there but whether or not they have Breeding Grounds and they will have new attacks on the homeland, we dont know that yet. But we ought to be very plain in our government. Were not gonna stand for that and if theres any chance that people will use the territory to plan another attack on the united states American Forces will be back to prevent and crush anybody who plans it. Trey governor let me ask you one final question i cannot imagine the political atmosphere 20 years ago but there had to be a political list of bipartisanship for you to be able to do what you did with your cochair, is there any hope of recapturing the environment in our country as divided as we have seen. It seems to be a little difficult but a couple of things that we had on the commission we are x Politicians None of us are going for this anymore. That was one thing. Secondly there was an atmosphere getting to the bottom of it and the families of 9 11 that were incredible force in those families supported us every step of the way and they went ahead through congress. We had all of that going force, unity in the country ended up with the last major thing in this country with five republicans and five democrats agreed a unanimous report in the United States Congress implemented the report and were safer in this Country Today because of it. Trey i hope that is not the last moment of unity that our country has but if it is, it was in part because of your leadership and we thank you for your leadership on that, thank you for joining us tonight. Thank you, congressman very much. Trey The Tower Of Voices and shanksville, pennsylvania honors the brave Men And Women of flight 93. Trey tonight we will remember some of the unsolved heroes of 9 11 as we embark on this new week working 20 years since the attacks on america we take a closer look at the largest Water Evacuation in American History. One of the lesser known stories about people they. On September 11, 2001 as new York City came under attack bridges, tunnels and public Transit Shutdown Leaving Hundreds Of Thousands of people in Lower Manhattan suddenly stranded. I saw hundreds and hundreds of people flooding some in panic mode, something came out of the subways and standing. Coast guard working in the area when police sounded the alarm. I realize i need to reach out to the Command Center at the Coast Guard to tell them the only way were going to get all of these people out of here is by water. As first responders rushed to the scene the u. S. Coast guard made a Radio Call to ask all nearby voters for help. All available books this is the united states Coast Guard the evacuation of lower Manhattan Report to government island. And help they did. Everything they loaded was up there, within minutes of Volunteer Mariners converged in a formation there was a private vote. There was tugboats, firebirds, police boats, private boats and on the long Island County Everyone stepped up and brought people home they took him people that were injured. New York Waterway fairies were some of the first private boats on the scene. Everyone who worked this company stepped in and pitched in they just started running, they were instructed and got people to New Jersey as quickly as you can then as people started to come to the waterfront, hundreds of thousands of people, the whole industry stepped up from long Island South Jersey is pretty amazing. Circle Line Tour boats became Emergency Water shows. I leave another vote pulls in like that all day. I could see it in their eyes. When we loaded up we cleared the shares, all kinds of space with a were standing and went across the river halfway across the hudson and if you look down you can see all of the smoke in the collapsed towers and that was horrifying. We got the approval from the Coast Guard to me on any vote that you can that are capable of doing the job so if you have a guy that is captain that was training and is able to handle a vote put them on a vote and use them for evacuation. In all and made up a first responders along with more than 100 private boats would come to the rescue. Evacuating half A Million people in less than nine hours. People hurt, people crying it was pretty intense. It was not planned it was not practiced or orchestrated. The great boatlift as his came to be known now is the largest evacuation in modern history. Larger than dunkirk during World War ii when nearly 339,000 allied troops evacuated from france from a private vote over nine days. The common threat people deep down all good people and they want to do things to help other people, theyre all heroes they may not think that themselves but theres so much humility in this industry and definitely save lives as well as there was people who were jumping over and hanging on ledges in the water and a lot of boaters pick them up and save them, they were trained to get away from the giant loom of smoke. Trey the heroes of 9 11 were not only in new York City and chinks will pennsylvania, 40 Brave Americans on flight 983 fall directly against Terrorist Hijackers and prevented what many people believe wouldve been an attack on the united states capital. A tribute to those Heroes Stands And Chinks Will Pennsylvania where the plane crashed that morning. My next guest spearheaded this memorial, Paul Murdoch joins me now. Welcome. You, nice to be here. Trey what did you learn as you were designing and implementing this memorial what did you learn about the Men And Women on that plane that the rest of us should know. They were everyday heroes. Imagine hopping on a plane for a flight and having to encounter this hijacking. There were 40 people on board with all walks of life, they managed to figure out what was going on that day, they came together and voted on what to do. They all took a stand and took action together collectively to prevent what wouldve been an unimaginable tragedy in our capital. Trey i have looked at this memorial and it is stunningly beautiful. I want to ask you how you create beauty out of pain and tragedy, but first i want to ask you, what may have i missed the symbolism of this memorial, what do you need to see in person that you cannot see just looking at pictures. I think the scale of the landscape is hard to capture on photographs this is a full national park it is 2200 acres in size, just to give you an idea is to a half times the size of central park. So we have essentially created a whole Memorial Landscape and i think its important to be able to move through the landscape so we have tried to do different Memorial Features and different key aspects of the site and while you could see photographs of each moment in the landscape it is really meant for people to experience by moving through it and understanding the different places in the relationship. Trey all i can tell you you have to be an artist to be able to do which is combine the pain and the tragedy with beauty and how you did it i dont know because im not an artist but it was stunning to see and i cannot wait to see in person and thank you for loaning your considerable artistry and talents to this memorial that is so well deserved. Thank you. Still ahead we celebrate labor, work and we celebrate The Americans who proved there is Intrinsic Value and work. That is next. Trey monday is Labor Day and the day set aside to celebrate the american worker and a gift of having a job, it is a day to reflect on the inherent value of work to remind ourselves that Todays Work deserves a fair wage of wage of our familial and societal obligations in a part of celebrating work is appreciated and opportunities weve been given and what those jobs taught us about ourselves and others. Ive been working since i was a kid my father was only for doctor in the history of medicine or so he led us to believe so we worked from the moment the law allowed and some were solitary jobs like a Paper Route and cutting grass and it makes you appreciate those who have lonely jobs or work outside or do the jobs that arent always noticed and appreciated as they should be. And then later it was off to the Grocery Store to buy groceries and you learn lessons about life in a thing or two. And the women that had to put things back and decide what to buy and what not to buy because the Cash Register was asking for more money than what they had. And then i worked in a warehouse in the summertime a glorious unairconditioned warehouse. I loved that job, not because of what we did but because of who i got to do it with. I had the best coworkers and they change my life almost every one of my coworkers was black. Every one of my bosses was black, we were aware of her differences, we just didnt care. We were a team, a family of sorts and we started the day in different neighborhoods of different lives but for eight hours each day we worked and sweated together as a family and later the sons of some of the men who worked with me at that warehouse worked with me at the courthouse in a beautiful symmetry of life and work. There was a man who worked with us at the warehouse and he preferred to be alone, he did not want to join us for breaks or lunch, he worked until it was break time and then he sat on the Pool Cart he made for himself. The rest of us took any that was available but he made his own. His cart had a picture of his family and his favorite Bible Verse was written on a piece of cardboard wired to that card. His favorite Bible Verse was let the dead bury the dead, that is probably no one elses favorite Rival Verse in the world but it was his. And you had the sense that the Pool Cart was one of the few things in life that he truly thought was his own. He had a tough life. He had a disfiguring Skin Disorder on his face which means he showed more courage one day and facing the world the most of us will in a lifetime. But face the world he did every day for the Essential Rate of work in the inherent value of work and the Meaning And Purpose of a job in college i work with men in women at the mental Health Clinic in these Men And Women put Paint Chips on a chain and they did that and only that all day long. And to us that may seem monotonous but they loved working in the, not a read that they felt artwork because it gave them a sense of purpose it gave them structure and meaning. When i was in congress i visited a place of business called workability and these Men And Women had physical challenges but they showed up for work every day. One gentleman was in a wheelchair he could not use his hands or feet but he had a job. He would move from workstation to workstation providing encouragement to his coworkers, that was his job. To provide encouragement. I have been around President S and senators and all manner of successful people but i have never been around anyone who enjoyed and needed the inherent value of a job more than that man. So on this Labor Day let us be think for a job, let us be diligent in advocating for our fellow americans who want to work, let us make sure we are a country that encourages work, a country where 40 hours a week is enough to meet our obligations in life.
