Meanwhile, accounts of reprisal against these atrisk afghans are getting more dire. 12 members in kandah and the taliban has shot them. The reliance on the taliban to keep their word . No one is saying from the federal government, No One, the president , the secretary of defense, No One from the Intelligence Community say that the taliban are good actors. Reporter senate republicans want accountability now. And concerns that afghans were brought here without a Green Card or visa. We apparently evacuated Tens Of Thousands of afghans that have no clear connection to our troops. Reporter the White House and the State Department have both said there are risks with charter flights seeking to extract americans. There is no way to confirm the basic details of that flight, including who is organizing it and the passengers that are on board. But also point out there are keen risks from isis and they have an interest to strike u. S. Citizens and the like. So, we are awaiting the White House to see how they are going to keep their promise to evacuate all americans from afghanistan. John well, we are going to have to wait a little bit longer and we are told that the Press Conference is delayed about 20 minutes. So, dont wait your breath. Gop senators are looking for info on the Vetting Process. And what criteria did you select these individuals for the Air Lift while leaving american citizens and Green Card holders behind . You still have deep ties inside dhs, what are you hearing . Well, look, im concerned because i know, for a fact, lets just take the siv for a minute. It takes an average of 500 days from the point of application to the point of approval of awarding the visa. It is actually 503 days if you want an actual number. So, in january, february, march when they were reviewing sivs before we left afghanistan, those applications were denied when we had time to really vet these applications. They are not spending near the year and a half like they should be. We dont have access to the afghans records anymore. How do they verify these documents are authentic . How do they manipulate the Dod Database and find out if they are sympathizers for terrorists . And now, they are doing it in a matter of days. It is a huge national Security Issue and they are cutting corners. Sandra Secretary Pompeo joined us last hour and he shared in your concerns. Doing it in quick time will result in risk. I fear that we are going to see an attack here in the homeland because we didnt take the time to properly vet folks. Sandra we should take the time. You are suggesting that it takes a year and a half and we should do it. But in the meantime, what should we do with these civilians and that needed rescued and taken out of that very dangerously controlled taliban country . Well, 25 countries have agreed to take these people, so we dont have to take them all. We cant release them into american streets until we know for sure who they are. The taliban has the manifest of the people of the united states that wanted to get to the airport, including sivs and what a huge Safety Risk for these people. They have the Biodata Machines and we cant let our guard down. We have to make sure they are vetted. When they send it to the national visa center, it takes about two weeks. There is no u. S. Embassy in afghanistan anymore. How are they vetting these people . Again, how they are not accessing the international database. They need to be clear to The American public and how exactly are you vetting these people properly . I know that Jen Psaki says that No One is entering the united states, unless they are properly vetted. If you rush it, mistakes are going to be made. People are going to end up stepping foot on our sail that is going to be a danger to the united states. Just because they assisted the united states in the war, doesnt make them a good guy for sure. This is a huge national Security Issue. And the southwest border and how many of them could be suspected terrorists and now, the taliban has released from afghan prisons known terrorists and it is now more important than ever that we secure the border and shut it down like President Trump did. John you say these people have to be vetted before they come to the united states. Now, they havent been released on the streets of america yet, but from his visit, he suggested there are a number of people that dont have visas or been vetted. He said, im concerned they dont have the information on background to make sure they are fully vetted. Some of these people are coming out of afghanistan and from some of the military bases in the united states and have no documentation, how do you vet them . Look, i have the same concern. I have talked to senior officials at dulles airport. They have zero Identity Documents. Nothing with their name on it. They are not on the manifest and they have no Identity Documents and either she is lying or doesnt know exactly what is going on. I agree this is a huge, huge national Security Issue and hopefully, at the Press Conference today with the secretary, someone is going to ask these questions. The american public has the right to these answers. They are not being properly vetted and we can be assured of that just because of what is happening on the ground and based on the proper process that is in place that takes 18 months, there is no way they are doing it properly. Sandra and the process is going on in texas, virginia, and others. We hope to learn more about that process. The area could be without power for weeks, if not months. And then, there is the Rebuilding Process. Hurricane Ida King king killing 49 people and that number is still rising. Reporter the president is greeted by both senators here in louisiana. And new Orleans Mayor latoya cantrell. He is going to get a bit of an update and then, start touring the damage. Eventually, he is going to get on a helicopter and go down to the hard Hit Area of Grand Isle and this is right on the coast, in louisiana and basically took a direct hit from Hurricane Ida. Not one homestands or is livable. It is going to be a long time until this community gets back on its feet. They have to rely on the goodwill of others who are handing out much needed supplies like food and water. We had a three Mile Line waiting for us and starting at 6 30 and we are not open until 88 30. The line is long and it is hot. Reporter and we were down to Grand Isle and really far down in the bayou. Some of these homes were picked up off of their foundations and tossed 50 yards and they have not only lost their homes, but their jobs. John yeah, it is a major Fishing Center and thats a source of much of the fish that comes to the united states, as well. So, we could see some shortages on that front. Sandra our coverage continues in manville, New Jersey about 30 miles south. Reporter there are splinters of wood everywhere and you can still see Smoke Billowing from what was a Banquet Hall and the owner says they opened in 2018 and they expected to see flooding here because it is right in front of a river, but they did not expect for it to explode. You can see the sewage. The water is still coming out as the floodwaters here reseed. I urge anyone to still stay off of the roads. Many motorists have been caught by surprise on a road they thought they knew be the depthness of the current. And the risk of loss of life is very real. Reporter at least 25 people have died in the state of New Jersey. Six are still missing. The majority swept away in their vehicles from the rising floodwaters. Here in manville, New Jersey there have been 500 water rescues and 1,000 homes have been inundated with floodwaters that reached up to eightfeet. They have never seen the river here, it hit 28feet shattering the record. It usually floods at just 14feet. The Police Chief tells us they have seen all types of floods in the past 30 years and they are used to, but never seen this type of damage and this level of Flash Flooding. This level of Flash Flooding is nothing they have experienced in this area and the clean up is going to take some time. Sandra these people have lived in these areas their entire lives and never seen anything like this. Thank you for telling their stories. John we are going to the State Department and we are told that Anthony Blinken should be there in 45 seconds and given the fact there are thousands of people that want to get out of afghanistan and as you said earlier, sandra, the taliban is claiming to be in control of the entire country. But that is what the taliban is claiming at this hour. Sandra all this among a new Washington Post Polling and when asked, those who support the withdrawal and approve of bidens handling, only 46 and the majority dont agree with the handling of the withdrawal is 52 . Secretary blinken is going to explain the withdrawal and what happens next. And many are outraged, including members of congress. You have seen the letter. They have demanding answers of how was this decision made to execute this withdrawal in this way. John and something else has just popped up too and this relates to 9 11. The families of 9 11 victims have been demanding the declassification of what if any Role Saudi Arabia contributed to 9 11. The president is just denying. And the documents generated in the u. S. Governments investigation of the 9 11 Terror Attacks should now be disclosed. That may give families this is being reviewed, but the last caveat that some of these documents could remain classified if it is found it could damage relations between the united states and a foreign country. So many of these families firmly believe that some elements in Saudi Arabia are attached to the attacks of 9 11 twenty years ago. Sandra Secretary Blinken was criticized for not taking questions when he addressed The American public. So, there are questions right now as we await him, whether or not he will take questions in a room that doesnt look full, john. I guess that is because it is a friday ahead of a long labor day weekend. The american people certainly want to know about this. And the author of 9 11, bringing those responsible to justice. The key topic that reporters are going to want to know is if any key americans and our afghan allies have been pulled out since monday . Thats the big question, are they going to be hostages and get out or cannot . We have not heard from the u. S. Government whether they have gotten out or not. It relates to my book. When i wrote countdown Bin Laden, never thought this was going to be in 2021. The fact that we brought justice to Bin Laden and there was no attack on the u. S. Emanating. We did everything that we could to protect our kids and im eight months pregnant and it just happened so quick. We were just on top of Each Other and all i can remember, it went to being very dark. We were in a corner of our basement to light coming through. There was nothing above us. So, we said we have to get out of here. And you mentioned the walk up steps, which is something that we didnt like about this home when we bought it, but we were able to get out through it. And i was able to push the kids Swing Set out of the out and get out. It wasnt safe anymore in our basement and a miracle that we are here. I have some bumps and bruises and i wish we were wearing shoes. We were all barefoot. Hindsight again, i wish that we had some shoes on. I want to thank our community and the mayor and the whole township. The outpouring has been so beautiful. This changed my life in so many positive ways. People not only from our community and from surrounding communities are just showing up with bins and supplies. It has been incredible. John these incidences often bring out the best in people. This was a tornado 350 miles per hour and on the ground for 12 miles and the destruction is unbelievable. What have you been doing since the Storm Hit on wednesday . As Troy And Ashley were laying on top of their children and ensuring their safety, i was on the other side of town and tornados dont touch down in New Jersey and quickly, i got calls from my Emergency Response leaders and from that moment on, it has been a blow. What we did immediately is setup our office of Emergency Response and we were focused on trying to find who was hurt, what was needed . The truth is that we expected much more devastation with injuries and possibly deaths and the fact that we have not dealt with any of that and there has been no deaths and hardly any serious injury is truly miraculous. John it is miraculous and especially when you consider that your home was ripped off of the foundation and above your head, which is exactly why you go down in the basement to get away from a tornado. I saw a video and you cheering finding your purse. And i heard that some of your belongings from your home were found five miles away . We got a picture on Social Media and just the actual picture in philadelphia on the streets. Thats over 20 miles away. John in philadelphia . Yes, in philadelphia on the street. Someone was going out for a walk somewhere and had my handwriting on the back and heard the date and the age of the kids and put it on Social Media and posted it and somehow a friend of a friend said i know those people. John thats insane. If i can ask you, Troy And Ashley, your life has been turned Upside Down and blown across your yard, what do you do now . Just take it daybyday and slowly put it back together. The main thing is that we were all safe and thats all that mattered. All of the stuff is replaceable. And keep thinking, pay it forward. Pay it forward. There is a list of people i cant even think of. The emts at the hospital when i got the babies out and everybody has been absolutely incredible. And they have Stations Setup everywhere. Water. John all right, a 20minute, 2minute Warning and Anthony Blinken, Secretary Of State has taken the podium at the State Department. Lets listen in. Heres where we are as of today. First, our new team in doha is up and running. Second, we are in constant contact with americans who remain in afghanistan and may still wish to leave. Weve assigned Case Management teams to each remaining american citizen, who has expressed an interest in leaving. As you know, starting in march, we sent 19 separate notices to american citizens in Afghanistan Encouraing and then, urging them to leave. Most of the remaining american citizens are dual nationals, whose home is afghanistan and whos extended families live there. So, it is no surprise their decision to leave the place they call home is a wrench decision. We continue to work with private partners, news organizations, and private foundations. There are a lot of complex low gistical issues to coordinate. We are working through them as methodically as best that we can. Let me say for those immigrants that maybe eligible for special visas and questions why these men and women were not already out of afghanistan by the time that the Evacuation Effort began. When we took office, we inherited a backlog of thousands of afghanistan immigrants. Going back to march of 2020. Covid19 of course, was a major impediment. As you know, the process for approving a special visa is a lengthy one. There are multiple steps and these are congressional requirements and they include multiple agencies and not just the State Department. We were determined to fix this. Within two weeks of taking office, we restarted the Siv Process in kabul. On january 4, 1 of the very first Executive Orders issued by President Biden directed us to process Siv Applications more efficiently and quickly. I added 50 people to the team in washington to process applications. We also sent more Siv Adjudicators To Kabul and doubled the Siv Adjudicators working on applications. When going on departure in april and many of the embassy personnel returned to the united states, we sent more Siv Adjudicators. In may, we lessened the type of issuing Siv Visas by more than a year. In july, some of you will remember, we launched operation Allies Refuge with afghan refugees eligible for sivs, as well as their Family Members to the united states. We continue to process as many Siv Applications as possible. We are exploing alternative ways to process Siv Applications, so afghanistans dont have to wait in afghanistan while they are being process. We have learned from experience that the Siv Process was not designed to be done during an evacuation emergency. There are lessons that we have learned and we will learn as the process continues to make the Application Program more efficient and effective. I want to thank the many members in afghanistan that are working through organizations to help afghans that helped them. I just spoke with several of them, along with the secretary of Veterans Affairs who are using their voices, their networks, their resources who are doing all they can to help their friends and comrades. We will partner with them to help siv applicants in afghanistan. We have ideas and it is going to be incorporated into the Planning And Work they are doing. And the information and the ideas that we are getting from the Veterans Community are being put into that process. And simply put, i share our gratitude to them for their incredibly important and passionate advocacy. It is more than a priority for us, it is a deeply held commitment and it is an ongoing one. We are going do do everything that we can to keep it in the weeks and months ahead. The diplomacy is already signed by more than 100 countries and makes clear that the expectations of the taliban lead government, including Freedom Of Travel, upholding the basic rights of afghans, including women and minorities and forming an inclusive government. In a couple of days on sunday, im going to heading to afghanistan to express our deep gratitude they have been doing to aid with the Evacuation Effort. And i will convey our pride and thanks to the diplomats, troops, and other u. S. Employees who are doing truly heroic work around the clock to make this process ongoing as quickly as possible. And in germany, im going to have a chance to meet with The Americans awaiting processing and im going to meet and hold an administerial meeting on afghanistan with partners of more than 20 countries that all have a stake and seek to relocate afghans and hold the taliban to their commitments. Starting with the commitment to let people leave afghanistan should they choose to do so. We are working closely with turkey to get the airport up and running as quickly as possible. On the humanitarian front, continuing to provide critical and life saing humanitarian aid to the people of afghanistan. This aid will not flow through the government, but rather through independent organizations. Seven, we have heard from many private companies, ngos, and some of them have already made very significant pledges. Thats terrific. Also, not surprising. Thats what we do. The united states stands apart for our global leadership and welcoming refugees into our communities. Last night i had a chance to go out to the center, some of you may have visited where i saw the incredible operation that we, together with dod, hhs, are wanting to welcome new afghan arrivals when they first touch down in the united states. Many thousands of people have fled Fear And Desperation and now, hope for a better Life And Future here with us and our people made that happen. Earlier today, i had a chance to meet with our team from Embassy Kabul back home in the united states. I spoke with employees across the department at an all hands town hall. These past weeks have been very intense. They have demanded a lot from a lot of people here at the department, people who rose to the challenge, and continue to give their all. I talked to colleagues, Consul Officers who are on the line, shoulder to shoulder with the marines, including those who have lost their lives. Literally pulling people into the airport and into safety and ultimately, on to freedom. And again, we talk a lot about the numbers and we throw a lot of statistics around, but each one of those was a mother, a father, a son, a daughter, a parent, a grandparent, and i have remarkable pride in what our people did, what our servicemembers did and what our other colleagues across the government did to help. As i said the other day, particularly for those who gave their lives in this effort, some of us, maybe the most exceptional among us are called upon to do a Lifes Work, a Lifes Service in a short period of time. And those 13 did a Lifes Service in a very short period of time. As i told our own colleagues that are here today, as part of that effort, and going forward in the many, many years they continue to serve, they too, have done a Lifes Work of service in a very, very short period of time. We are going to do everything we can moving forward to continue this mission, and also, to learn from it. We owe it to ourselves. We owe it to The American people to reflect on how we did, what worked, what didnt, how we can do better. We will deliver on that too. With that, im happy to take any questions. Thank you. One is about the and the first one is that we have reporting today that the Taliban Cofounder is going to lead a new Afghan Government. I would like your reaction to this. What does the u. S. Government think about this specific government in i know that you have mentionedcy criteria and principles, but i would like to get your take on this specific new government. And the second one is accountability and you just said reflecting on what went wrong and this is not in anyway to diminish the work of this Department Or Anyone else, but you and the administration have said there will be a time and place for that kind of accountability. So, where is the State Department in that process . And is this going to be in a format of a formal investigation . What is that going to look like . Thank you. Thank you. With regard to the government, we have seen different reports of Government Information and i have not seen Anything Final or dispositive of that government and who is in it and who is not. So, im going to reserve Judgment And Comment until i have seen that. It maybe coming up in the days ahead, but i want comment until i see Anything Final. But i will say as we have said and countries around the world have said, there is an expectation that the government that emerges now, it is going to have representation of nontaliban in it and different communities in afghanistan. So, we will see, in fact, what eh motherinlaws. I have to tell you, as important of what the government looks like, more important still is what any government does. Thats what we are really looking at. We are looking at what actions, what policies, any new Afghan Government pursues. Thats what matters the most. So, our expectation is to see inclusivity in government. But ultimately the expectation is to see a government that makes good on commitments that the taliban have made. Particularly when it comes to Freedom Of Travel and when it comes to not allowing afghanistan to be used as a Launching Ground for terrorism directed at us or any of our partners. When it comes to women and minorities and when it comes to not engaging in repriceals. And not just us, but many countries around the world. The second part of the question, we are committed to looking at everything that we have done from Day One through the present. And to draw lessons from it. I think that there also needs to be, including across the State Department, a look back at the entire 20 years. To understand the entire course of this War And Engagement with afghanistan and to ask the right questions and learn the right lessons from that. So, well have more im sure in the days and weeks ahead on what process we are going to be engaged in. But we are committed to doing that. A few things on this. I think as you know, we have evacuated roughly 124,000 people. Many remain at the socalled rolling Holding Pads as they are being processed and moved in case, out of the united states and to many other places. On the premium that we put getting people out as quickly and safely as possible and now, the premium, at the Lily Pad and other places in the united states and digging into which exactly categories they are going to fit into in is. All of that work now is what were doing. So, i cant give you specific numbers. What i can tell you is this, of the roughly 124,000 people who have been evacuated, the vast majority, the vast majority, 75 to 80 are afghans atrisk. And a significant number are going to be sivs, people who already hold an Siv Visa or in the pipeline and some are going to be P1 Or P2 refugees and some other number will be afghans atrisk, prominent One Way or another that may not fit into any of those categories. We are looking into those numbers now and i think that we are going to have more to say in the days and weeks ahead. But the overwhelming majority of people that came out of afghanistan for those that remain that youre talking about, what does that look like . What are you doing to get the sivs that were left behind . So a few things on that. Theres a lot of things happening from the political to the practical to enable us to continue to bring people out of afghanistan that wish to leave including any remaining citizens that want to leave, including sivs, including afghans at risk and Third Party nationals.
