We have you covered on a story that wasnt supposed to be. We knew that ida was barrelling to the Gulf Coast And did considerable damage to louisiana, that she wound then foster rains And showers And floods, possibly going north. But nothing like this. Nothing approaching the historic damage of these storms. Weve got Bryan Llenas in queens, New York And David Lee Miller In Hoboken, New Jersey. We begin with bryan. Bryan, queens has not the so great honor of having been hit the hardest among communities. Yeah, neil. At least 11 people died in their Basement Apartments in queens, New York like this one behind me. You can see the gapping hole. Horrific. A And-son'>Mother And Son died. The Building Owner came down to warn them And in five minutes, it was too late. There was separation And tragically death. A 2yearold Boy ten miles away died. These Basement Dwellings were horrific places to be during a flash flood event. On top of all of that, were now getting word that a connecticut State Trooper a veteran, is also among the dead in connecticut. His car was swept away. Here in New York, the Subway System completely inundated by the rain as well as cars that were abAndoned by hundreds of people. This rain came in stunning people. Were used to two inches of rain at most. This was a historic three inches of rain per hour. Central park broke a record. So you can see a situation here where the national Weather Service sent out a flood emergency. The first in the Citys History warning people to seek higher ground. That warning came with just minutes And hours. Some people were strAnded because the Subway System was completely shut down. People were strAnded in their vehicles And others were just trying to seek higher ground. At The End of the day, Governor Hochul came to queens And she spoke. She said that the state officials were surprised themselves by the rate in which this rain came in. The national Weather Service, another forecasters have been forecasted for days that there would be excessy rainfall amounts And Flash Flooding in the area. Here in queens, the cleanup continues And the morning begins for so many here who have lost loved ones. We expect that Death Toll to increase. Neil . Neil thank you, Bryan Llenas. Indeed to bryans point, there were a warning about Flash Floods hours before they hit. In fact, might have been a nuisance for those of you with Smart Phones And the like. You were getting beat And pummeled with updates throughout the day And later into the night. So i had a tough time understAnding the politicians that said that they were caught off guard by this. Be that as it may, lets go to David Lee Miller In Hoboken where a lot of Road Look like rivers, right, David Lee . Indeed. Youre right, neil. A boat might be more helpful than a car. The Storm Deluge the state of New Jersey. Dumped almost five inches of rain here In Hoboken. You can see for yourself the main intersection here in downtown hoboken, first in clinton. Theres a long line of cars slowly, very slowly making their way through the city. Were told that the water now has started to recede, but at this intersection, its as much as eight or nine inches. It was higher than that a few hours ago. The situation here slowly improving. No loss of life here In The City Of Hoboken. Statewide, there were nine deaths in New Jersey And the number could have been higher if it wasnt for the response of first responders. Two tornadoes touched down. Ashley thomas, pregnant with two kids, had the smarts to race to the basement to get her family to safety. Listen. We were down there about 15 minutes before it happened. I called 911. We were huddled. Everything was falling on our backs. Luckily we have a Walkup Basement or we would have never gotten out. It was awful. Throughout this day, roads, hospitals, va centers, bridges have been damaged by this storm. Also experiencing flooding, newark airport. Were told that in total to date more than 400 flights were cancelled. But gradually now were getting word that service is starting to get back to normal. Lastly now, some new video, some astonishing video from bridgewater township, New Jersey. If youre a fan of the somerset patriots, might be awhile before you attend a home game. Their Baseball Field now completely under water. Were told that they were in the middle of a sevengame series. Looks like that is going to have to be postponed. This is now as New Jersey slowly recovers from a massive storm. Neil . Neil thanks, David Lee for that. To his point about airlines that were cancelling flights at Liberty Airport And cancelling them on their own. That was flooding at the airport. Today a little more than 11,050 flights in the New York metropolitan area were cancelled outright. But again, as David Lee pointed out, some flying has resumed And some people stuck in Area Airports are now able at least if they are good at it to find the flight that they want to get to where they want to go. Its still not easy. In pennsylvania, very hard hit as well. Severe flooding as people trapped in their homes. Its this guys push to get them out And help them out. Im talking about the Pennsylvania Borough Manager out of bridgeport, keith truman. Thanks for taking the time. Thats a task. Quite a few that are trapped. They had no time to leave. The Flood Waters kept coming. What is the latest . Thats correct, neil. Thanks for having me. Our first responders And Emergency Management teams along with adjacent municipalities in a large showing have been networks since 10 00 p. M. Performing rescue operations. Just wrapped up recently as the river is receding. But yes, it was quite an endeavor. Neil what is the forecast now in terms of getting to people right now And are the waters receding in some parts they are And in other parts in southern New Jersey that doesnt appear to be the case, what do you say . Neil, at 7 00 a. M. We saw our apex. The Schuylkill River crested at 26 3 4 feet. That was the worst in modern record. So at this point it has here shortly after 4 00 on the Eastern Seaboard receded to somewhat normal levels. At least off of the roads. Thats good. Be safe yourself, keith. Thanks very much. Thank you. Neil in bridgeport, pennsylvania. A reminder that ill be speaking to the mayor Of Hoboken, New Jersey as David Lee told us earlier. Tough going there. Less tough but problematic for a lot of people also stuck. Lets go to grady trimble. Hes in louisiana where if you think about it, all of this started And theyre still dealing with the aftermath in terms of gas that they cant get, stations that are not open. Utilities that are not providing anything including valuable Air Conditioning because its pretty hot And a lot stuckey. Grady, what is the latest . It is, neil. More than 60 of Gas Stations here in New Orleans And Baton Rouge have no fuel whatsoever. So when people hear that there is a station with fuel, this is what happens. Long lines form. The governor here says that the lack of fuel is hampering recovery efforts. President biden promised today that help is on the way talking about using the strategic Petroleum Reserve to get fuel to pumps more quickly. He also talked about waving the time that truckers have to clock out so that they can get supplies here if theyre carrying fuel, water or food. Ive been speaking with people that are growing frustrated. They havent had power for several days. One woman said she waited in line for four hours And capped at 25 of gas that she could get. The help that was promised wasnt coming quickly enough. We need food, ice, water. We dont have anything. Nothing. Fema is not helping with anything. Thats why we had to come home. Theyre know paying hotel room. We cant afford that. Its ironic theres a Fuel Shortage here. The state produced so much of the And-gas'>Oil And Gas for the rest of the country. Because some refineries that were shut down are still inoperable, Thats Part of the reason that the national Gas Average is rising. Its up four cents from a week ago. Neil grady, thanks very much. Back to the Post Storm that is now afghanistan. We are out, the taliban is in. But theyre having a devil of a time nailing down the entire country. Well explore that a little bit as well as the push right now here to talk to the taliban And the taliban now reportedly interested in talking to us. Really . Neil so some slipped through the cracks. That is the first that there could be some problems getting those out of afghanistan while the overwhelming majority wish us no harm. Theres concerns, but not everybody is. There is a time when were relying on the taliban to help us find answers And when it comes to those still in the country, we want out of the country to help us do that as well. How likely is that to Jennifer Griffin at the pentagon. Jennifer what are you hearing . Hi, neil. I just came out of the pentagon briefing. So a point of clarification. General wolters that we just spoke to, the head of the u. S. European commAnd, he said that he had about 24,000 afghans come through three bases that fall under european commAnd. 58 people were flagged in the screening, the biometric And bio graphic screening that has been done at the bases. But of those 58, only one was really deemed that had to be flagged red And pulled out And taken in to some sort of custody arrangement. But general wolters said that person was not a serious throughout. So in terms of working with the taliban, i asked john kirby, the Press Secretary, whether anyone from the military had reached out to the taliban since the last u. S. Forces had left. He said no. What is interesting, the new relationship between the u. S. Government And military is yet to be determined with the taliban. The taliban continue to brAndish american weapons captured from the afghan army. The fighters expressed anger that all of the planes And helicopters were dismantled before leaving. Taliban fighters took on role of the police in kabul helping at traffic at checkpoints And issuing a statement like this one from the member of the taliban Special Forces urging calm. My message to the honorable people of kabul is that everybody should go to work And love. Offerses, shops And companies should start operating And have no fear of anyone. We And-night'>Workday And Night to ensure the safety of fellow citizens. They should have no worries. Those are easy words for this tall been leader to say. But the reality on the ground is different And fearful for many that are still in hiding And reports of vicious retribution. Here at the pentagon yesterday, the Defense Secretary And chairman of the joint chiefs were asked about working with the taliban in the future. Heres what they said. This is a ruthless group from the past. Whether or not they change remains to be seen. As far as our dealings with them at that Air Field or in the past year or so, in war, you do what you must in order to reduce risk to mission in information, not what you want to do. Possibly coordination with the taliban . Its possible. A stunning admission on the ground in afghanistan And the absence of strong intelligence networks that had to be rolled up as part of this hasty u. S. Withdrawal. Neil thanks, Jennifer Griffin. Another view on this subject that maybe its the taliban that needs us more than we need them. Theyre in a battle with the isisk fighters, 2,000 plus strong And they need money, a lot of money. We have frozen about 9. 5 billion on it And they cant get their hAnds hahn it under the threat of possible sanctions if they dont behave from this country. So we could be problematic. Lets go to dave sears, Retired Navy Seal commAnder. Author of smarter, not harder. Good to see you, dave. Were going to need a lot of smarter thinking going forward here. Now this is turned up on its head again on the notion that the taliban might be playing coy with them. That they might need us more than we need them. Theyre going to need a lot of people. Theyll have a hard time with governance. It was miserable in the 90s. They are terrible. They dont have the people to keep the electricity on, to keep services, sewage, waste cleanup, all of these things. Its a very disparate country with 90 poverty rate. So theres people looking to get paid. Not the least of which would be lets even assume that the 300,000 man strong afghan army, 150,000 of those were ghost soldiers that didnt exist. We still have 150,000 soldiers that are out there, theyre going to need some kind of paycheck. Are they going to turn to malitias . You have the south afghans that are aligned shiias with iran. Theres 50,000 strong of those. And syria. The taliban has a lot of problems coming. Neil do you think theyll be helpful . No, i dont at all. I wouldnt trust them one heartbeat. Hold them to their promises to get u. S. Citizens out. Id like to i havent heard how many have gotten out. As far as i know its none. Id like to hear that from the pentagon or the government. I wouldnt trust them at all. They will turn us on their enemy. This was an initial thing in the start of afghanistan. A lot of false intelligence given to us. So we hit a different compound or go on a different target that people were settling feud. Its hard to vet the targets if youre not on the ground yourself. Neil so for those americans that still might be there And dont want to be there And tens of thousAnds of afghan loyalists, nationals that are stuck there And now very much in danger, what will happen . I dont know. I feel for those people. I think our government has taken the military option off the table. We have capabilities but we dont have political will to exercise that option. So we need to exercise the other elements of national power. The economic, put pressure on pakistan. Put pressure on afghanistan with the money. Put pressure on the stAnds up to the north. Put that on as well. They need to hold them to their promises And get those people out. Neil dave, thanks very much. The criticism that the administration is getting on its hAndling this isnt only coming from the outside. Now from the inside. Those who might be frustrated that they have been blamed for a debacle that they say really stops at the front of the White House. Jacqui heinrich is there with more. Jacqui what is going on here . Hi, neil. Youre referring to this politco report. They spoke to two anonymous White House sources. One person telling politco that they were appalled And horrified that the american government Left Americans behind enemy lines. Another person saying they didnt concern the mission accomplished if americans were left behind. Fresh out of the briefing, still no update on whether any more americans have made it out since the troops with drew. The numbers we heard over the last few days have remained consistent with 100 And 200 people And the number closer to 100. The question that Jen Psaki didnt have an answer to is how many green holders And Siv Card holders were left behind. The pentagon said that ineligible individuals were evacuated, including people with no pending Application Or Status with the u. S. And that that number of eligible people remaining behind is varied. I asked the Press Secretary about, this Jen Psaki did not have any number of Green Card holders And Siv Applications remain. Lets listen. Its hard to define those numbers. Thats something that the State Department in coordinate with the department of And-security'>HomelAnd Security will be assessing what we think the population is And how we can work with this population. Jen psaki spoke to concerns about charter flights leaving afghan And-lAnding'>Evacuee And LAnding on u. S. Military bases sometimes they dont have solid information on Passenger Manifests And also theres an active isis threat. Isis keenly attacks on aviation targets, Air Force personnel And u. S. Military bases. Its unclear when And how flights will continue, where theyre going to be going out of when the airport is operational again And where they will lAnd. Were hearing accounts of reprisals against those afghans at risk, getting more dire. I asked Jen Psaki if given the stories that were hearing about taliban going around And killing people, going back on their grant of amnesty that they promised makes our reliance on the taliban for free passage of americans misplaced. She said that No One is saying that the taliban are good actors. Thats why theyre hesitant of giving recognition to them but did not directly answer whether our reliance on them in this environment is misplaced given those kinds of stories that were hearing. Neil . Neil yeah, jacqui. Thanks very much. Who would have thought all of this would have transpired even when Chris Wallace was writing this great bound count down Bin Laden whether by the time it came out the country itself of afghanistan would be in taliban hAnds. In filipino youll always be in my heart. No one is staying from the federal government. No one. The president , secretary of defense, nobody is saying that the taliban are good actors. Were not rushing to recognition. Well be watching clearly. We have a range of leverage at our disposal including access to the global marketplace And well be assessing it based on how they treat individuals in the country, how they treat women, whether they want people that want to leave the country leave. Those are all factors that well be assessing. Neil Bottom Line, theyre open to some conversation with the taliban And open to say that maybe the taliban can be taken at its word that its a different taliban. Ironies here not lost on Chris Wallace who has a great book out right now, countdown to Bin Laden, the untold story. Follows up on his great success with countdown 1945. I love the way you did in the last best seller, this the Tick Tok on that beginning 200 plus days beforehAnd when they had an hint, an idea that osama Bin Laden was in a place they knew And the hunt was on. But the irony with your book after the fact And you get into it near The End is its a whole change that happened with the government in afghanistan And with now the collapse of our presence in afghanistan. Its weird. Yeah. Weird is an understatement. You know, neil, when i wrote the book was timing it to come out on the 20th anniversary of 911 And i knew we were going to be out of the country. It never occurred to me that the same taliban that was in control of afghanistan in 2001 would be in control of afghanistan on 911 of 2021. That was unimaginable to me. I thought a Civil War would go on And see how the afghan government And the military did. Theres a couple of timely aspects. One is a lot of us are feeling bad right now about what our involvement in afghanistan And the 20 years. But we accomplish Add Lot in those 20 years even if The Ending wasnt so great. Part of it was Bin Laden. The fact that in 2011, may 1, 2011, we took down the mastermind of 911, severely degraded alquaida And we protected the u. S. HomelAnd from an attack like 911. There was none for 20 years. Now that possibility raises again because of the fact that alquaida is there under the taliban, isisk is there under the taliban. For 20 years, we protected the homelAnd And we brought justice at The End of a rifle held by rob oneill, a seal to osama Bin Laden. Neil you know, its weird. When im reading this And i got the book you got to it me late, but its okay. Its a great book. I was reading it. This is weird. Paying a special attention to Joe Biden And his role as Vice President at the time, someone who doubted the hunt for Bin Laden And talk him out. Biden said he would be more comfortable if they had additional information. Why put troops at risk And further u. S. Damage relations with pakistan if they werent sure he was there. He was a doubter till The End. He congratulated President Obama after the fact. But the fact was And remains that he had serious reservations about it. Absolutely. You talk about this book. I hope that its a History Thriller And a page turner. We take you inside when Leon Panetta gets the information about where he is. On april 28 of 2011, the final Decision Meeting Obama goes around the room, starts on his right with Joe Biden. Biden says i dont think you should launch the raid. Bill gates. Robert gates says i dont think you should lunch the raid. Then he goes to mullen, panetta, Hillary Clinton say go for it. Obama says look, this is about a 50 50 proposition. Some say 70 . Its 50 50. Hes either there or not there. He comes down the next morning And he tells his national Security Adviser its a go. Theres new facts on every page. One that i didnt know before i started researching this, because we talked to rob oneill, the man that killed Bin Laden, most of the seals thought this was a suicide mission. It was going to be a oneway ticket. If they got there, Bin Laden would have it booby trapped, body guards. They might get him but wouldnt come home alive. Neil i thought i knew it. The general story, how they got Bin Laden And took him out And how tall he was to confirm that they got the right guy before they got dna to prove it. But the one thing that struck me is how they started off potentially as a calamity. We all harken back to jimmy Carters Hostage Rescue in iran. We had a Lead Helicopter here fail. It wasnt looking promising. President obama went through with it. There was a lot of nervous moments there. A lot of people say it was the riskiest Ando-raid'>CommAndo Raid of this sort, special Operations Raid in the history of the country. One of the people against it, bob gates, he was an Executive Assistance to the Cia Director in 1980 on the Jimmy Carter Hostage Rescue when helicopters crashed into transport planes. Eight americans were killed And didnt get any hostages out. Hes very worried it was going to happen again. One of the things that people said is in these kinds of missions, no matter how careful you plan, something always goes wrong. There were two helicopters that went in with 24 seals. The house was going to be attacked. For two runs, the Weather Report was wrong. It was 70 degrees with the heat, there wasnt the lift And also when they program tied in the replicas, they did it in Chain Link fences. The Air Flow was not the same. Chalk one crashed. We remember the pictures of the tail of the blackhawk. They were very scared. Thats when you see Hillary Clinton in the famous picture with her hAnd to her mother. Bill mcraven said its not a crash. Its a hard lAnding. The men are safe. The mission continues. Neil its a very fast read of the Tick Tok. All the stuff i thought i knew but didnt know. I told you, i read this through the prism of what was transpiring in afghanistan the last week or so. Particularly Joe Biden. One thing that interested me after this successful attack And the havent at the time, Joe Biden, was putting away his Rosary Ring. Obviously he was urged dont do that so fast. Were not out of this yet. But the Rosary Ring stood out to me because your Colleague Bret Baier And others raised the possibility when President Biden was at dover Air Force base, rather than looking at his watch, he was clasps a Rosary Ring, which for some might not be familiar in the catholic religion, it can sit around your wrist, palm it or whoever. But that got me thinking of his religious views here. That aspect of it. The doubts And the concerns he had. That came through. Surprised me. Yeah, this is another one of those facts that i had never heard before. One of the principles one 0 the joys of writing this book as opposed to 1945, all the people are gone. I interviewed almost everyone that was also this operation from Bill Mcraven to Leon Panetta, to Hillary Clinton, bob gates. At The End of the president s speech in the east room, And-panetta'>Mullen And Panetta And biden come together And theyre holding their rosaries. Obama comes over And he reaches into his pocket And he pulls out a crucifix. Through all the planning by the u. S. Military And the power of the u. S. Government, they all sought divine intervention. Neil yeah, very powerful. A great book. Chris, i liked it. You got it to me late but thats fine. Youre a best Selling Author now. I urge anyone, its a fascinating breakdown of what you think you know but you really dont And see it through the prism of whats going on right now. Its a little jarring. At the same time, interesting timing not only with the anniversary of the 911 attacks but everything that has happened in the last two weeks. Chris wallace, thank you very much. Mayor, i know the waters are better than they were this morning but still looks tricky. Yeah, were not Out Of The Woods yet. Hoboken Last Night received the worst Storm Event that weve had since super storm sAndy. Several streets in West Hoboken are still flooded. Passable as we wait for the water to be pumped out. Just to give you some perspective, within eight hours, we had almost seven inches of rain. That puts us on par with hurricane irene, if you remember that. It was that type of Rain Event for us Last Night. Neil how was transit affected through this . Youre a busy city in itself. But people are trying to get to New York And what have you. Floods like that on the other side of the hudson the same deal, how did you hAndle that . Yeah, you know when you have half a city under water, traffic comes to a stAndstill. We have to issue a state of emergency. A shelter in place order, which means stay home. A restriction on nonessential travel. So we strongly urge people to work from home today. Do not go out. Do not cross in to flooded intersections. We have a lot of cars that are stuck And people that are stuck trying to pass barricades into flooded areas Of Hoboken. Also makes it a lot more difficult for our Emergency Vehicles to assist other residents. So the Bottom Line is, you know, nor the time being until we get the waters receded, were urging people not to travel unless they absolutely need to. Neil wise words. Thanks, mayor. Raj on this. If youre not vaccinated, dont travel this weekend. What do you think of that, doctor . I think it makes a lot of sense, neil. Were still seeing record numbers of cases in many parts of the country. Some the highest that theyve been in the entire pAndemic. If youre not vaccinated, youre at risk. So traveling for the Threeday Weekend is not a good idea. Theyre saying if youre vaccinated be, cautious in big groups. Neil a lot of people are worried about this even though theyve been vaccinated because they have to subscribe to the same rules, the mask up indoors And all that. So theyre pretty angry about it And increased some hostilities over this. What is the threat And the danger to those already vaccinated . They dont think they need to do all of this stuff. Well, with the Delta Variant, unlike previous variants, it does seem to affect vaccinated people. Not to the same extent, which is why it makes sense to get vaccinated. Look at the people being hospitalized right now. The people that were not vaccinated, there is a percentage that were vaccinated that were still ending up in the hospital. So in some areas of the country that can be as high as 20 are in vaccinated people that means youre not 100 vaccinated. Think about who is in your house. Who you can infect And how do we keep everybody as healthy And functioning as possible. Its behooves us to get this virus stamped out. The more people get vaccinated, the sooner it will happen. Neil doctor, you think kids need the vaccine . Dr. Fauci said in a short time theyll get the clearance for the vaccine And they should. What do you think . Yeah, i think kids should. One of the things we found out through the pAndemic is how important it is for children to be in school And to be learning And how much they suffered over the last year. Not just educationally but socially as well. So in order to have them get that full educational experience, we dont want them sick And school closing. They can get sick And they can expose their elderly teachers as well. Neil dr. Raj, thanks very much. Switching gears right now. Back to the flooding going on. Remember where this started . Its humbling to see the hower And the energy of ida And the structures And what id did it to people And amazing that, you know, No One hurt down here And everybody left. Kudos to you And your Camera Men And folks working with you. Are folks still without power there . I ask because man, it gets hot there. Its very, very hot there right now. Say nothing of the humidity. That is an awful combination. Indeed. Its very warm. Its a little over 900,000 people in the state of louisiana still without power. I was staying in New Orleans. Part of the French Quarter the lights went on at the hotel. I mean this sincerely, a cheer And a clap went out. You could hear it as the lights went on. Im stAnding here idly here with the humidity. You can imagine in the homes a cross the region trying to stay afloat And move forward And pick up the pieces here. Nonetheless, with no power And to running water And these long gas lines. This is where were challenged as humans right now. This is louisiana tough as they like to say down here in the south, neil. Neil all right. When i was inquiring on Fox Business about the damage now in the northeast, they said, neil, triple that. That necessarily isnt reliable, but what is clear is that it is a mess.
