The national Weather Service issued an Emergency Flood Warning for the first time in the Citys History Last Night. We talk about 6 to 10 inches of rain in a matter of several hours. Were talking about a record three inches of rainfall per hour. Really something weve never seen before. Cars were abandoned. Subway stations completely flooded out. There is still a Travel Advisory telling people to stay off the roads. Limiting service with the subways, New Jersey transit. Really tough to get around. Talking over 200,000 people in the tristate area, pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey are also without power. In New Jersey at least six people have died in that state. There is flooding there in passaic. A 70yearold man died when he was in his car with his family. The family was rescued. He was not. There was a twister that went through a community. Just buzzed saw through multiple homes. They believe there were multiple twisters in that state. Water rescues are happening throughout the tristate area episcopal fly bridge port, pennsylvania, people were being saved from the roofs of their homes with the rivers the big issue cresting now. The rainfall happened yesterday but now the creeks and streams and rivers are also continuing to rise so widespread flooding is still a threat today. The Bottom Line is the cleanup is continuing and the morning for these families honestly just starting. We rescued over 100 people and right now currently im talking to you from a Rescue Boat in the borough evacuating residents there. Julie lets talk about the depth of the water. A lot of people chose to leave their homes and that led to eight deaths in New Jersey. Two people are feared to have been swept away by the rising floodwaters. In a situation like this whats the best advice . Weve been seeing images in pennsylvania of people on the rooftops being evacuated. If the water is rising in your basement you must seek higher ground. Do you stay home and wait for help . On behalf of the hackensak Fire Departments we send our thoughts and prayers who lost Loved Ones during this tragic storm. We also recommend stay home. Turn around, dont drown. The waters rose so rapidly people became trapped in their vehicles didnt have a chance to turn around. In hackensak we didnt have any deaths or severe injuries. In lodi were now working with mutual aid partners on Main Street and six feet of water as we drive down the Main Street all you see is the tops of cars. Julie a woman told Governor Murphy Today it took her two hours to get to the hospital. I should note that she lives seven minutes from the hospital. She described it as, quote, like a war zone. Our community is destroyed in five seconds. Thats all it took. Heartbreaking. This was near the nearby tornado and the damage there. I cant even imagine how long it will take to clean up the mess. What do residents do, those who have lost power, thousands of them, homes destroyed by water damage, what do they do . From my experience 27 years working with the Fire Department we recommend after the Water Recedes if you smell Gas Call 911. Dont try to turn your Gas Or Electric back on. Contact your Insurance Company and let them know they have damage to your home and they can send out an Adjuster And Work with each other. You may be flooded but your neighbors may not be and they can give you a hand. The goal at the end of the day is do everything safely. It is unconscionable first of all we left americans in afghanistan as we pulled out. Our first priority should be the Safety And Security of every american and so the administration really needs to do more making sure we get all americans out of afghanistan that want to go. There was a wire down or tree, our community is just destroyed. Julie that is the homeowner whose house was destroyed in that tornado overnight in southern New Jersey just moments ago she found her wallet in the rubble of what is left of her home. Watch. Oh my, i have my wallet, i have money, i have my life, Oh My god. Yes. I was going to say that was gone. It was in our kitchen. And its yay big. Its the little things right now. I just want shoes for my kids and some underwear and were good, you know . We have nothing but they are finding things. Thats very exciting. Julie wow, this is in Michael Jackson where that tornado touched down and as you can see homes are absolutely destroyed. This woman said she left her wallet in her kitchen and ended up in the rubble out front. These people are left with nothing. Many of their homes and their cars destroyed so they have Nowhere To Go or at least transportation to get there. For those who do need to get somewhere you do need your money, you need to have access to your Bank Account in order to take out Money And Figure out what your next step is. Many will be seeking emergency shelter. Others who have the money and can afford it and can check into hotels but imagine people who dont have the large homes or financial means to go and seek expensive shelter for what could be months to rebuild. A lot of these homes are tear downs, no way of salvaging a lot of the damage you see here. Now today people will just try to salvage their belongings from what they can dig out of the rubble. A wallet thats great but all the Person Belongings and memories for years gone in an instant. The flooding throughout new Jersey And Pennsylvania and New York is unlike anything many of these residents have ever seen before. Moments ago we spoke with the mayor of hoboken, New Jersey. He hasnt seen flooding like this since hurricane since the past hurricane sandy. If you imagine that superstorm, okay, you know, this was Hurricane Ida. It came and barreled into louisiana as take category 4. Hurricane sandy was a large storm that hit this area. It wasnt a hurricane ar tropical storm here. This is heavy rains as remnants of a hurricane that hit delay louisiana. You have 190 miles of Water Flooded Homes in the northeast stretching from pennsylvania to New York City. It almost seems as if a lot of the residents were caught offguard. They knew heavy rains were coming in but nowhere near the record amounts and the rainfall that we experienced especially here in New York City, 10 inches of rain and parts of New Jersey the same. Laura is the executive for nassau county, New York. Long island was spared during this last storm but if you think of Long Island being in the center of two large bodies of water, thats the Atlantic Ocean and long Island Sound and sitting at low level area, there is not a lot of hills you are at sea level. Tell us the damage experienced on Long Island. The word unprecedented has been said quite a bit the last couple of years but we did get an unprecedented amount of rain. Three inches in one hour. The single largest Amount Weve had in more than 80 years since this data has been collected. So we had just torrential unprecedented deluge. Flooding, abandoned cars. Police had to rescue folks from an abandoned car and elderly person from their house. We want to thank the governor for giving us the help we need and now were clearing up but it is deceptive now because it is completely dry, The Sun has evaporated most of the flooding. The sky is blue. You wouldnt know we experienced it Last Night. Julie i think Long Island as a whole was spared when you look at the damage in pennsylvania and New Jersey. One has to wonder if one could properly prepare for it. How prepared do you believe residents were in New York but in all these states for this kind of flooding . You know, were on an island so used to extreme weather. We know were particularly vulnerable to extreme weather and this was worse than we had expected but not as bad as New Jersey and our neighbors to the west, New York City. Unfortunately they experienced people dying, real disruption to transportation and to life in general. We did compared to our neighbors get out pretty lucky here on Long Island. Julie im reading drivers were caught in fast moving water on the Long Island express way. It stretches through all of Long Island until you get to the hampton area. Nonetheless, the people who were in their cars trying to get out of this, many people that did, in fact, evacuate or maybe possibly moved west to get out of Long Island, which is what happened during the last storm if you will remember. A lot of people came to New York City not expecting that New York City would get the brunt of it. What happens to those trying to return if streets are still flooded. Any advice we can give our viewers in that scenario . Absolutely. If you see a Puddle Steer clear. It could be a foot of water easily. As weve seen, a foot of water can total a car and have a Car Drift and it can be really unsafe. While it may seem that everything is great, things may not be what they appear. We had several major Road Closures and minor Road Closures as well. Most of those are reopening ought were coming back to normal. If you see water there, steer clear, it is not worth taking the chance. Julie the remnants of Hurricane Ida that dumped historic rain, the Death Toll goes up. 18 deaths linked to the storm. Numbers are between 16, the Associated Press has some different numbers. It is hard to keep track quite frankly and with those who were swept away by the rising waters and the Family Members now looking to go find their missing Loved Ones, that is the hardest advice to give these people. What do you tell people stuck at home waiting for rescue but they know theyve got missing Loved Ones that perhaps did go out Last Night and have not returned. What advice could you possibly give people like that . You know, its just so terribly sad and it is better to prepare as much as you possibly can before a storm like that. Have an escape route. Listen to the authorities. You may think theyre overreacting but it is better to overreact and be safe than be stuck in a situation where you and your loved one is in jeopardy and my heart goes out to those Down In New Orleans and down there who they dont know where their Loved Ones are. All the power is out. On Long Island we have experienced a lot of serious storms and we have a sense of what that is like. Julie and what that sense is like is just true horror and our hearts and prayers go out to all of thoefs who have been stuck in the midst of this storm. If you dont have to leave your home, please do not. Thats what Emergency Personnel are saying. Also check on your neighbors if you can safely. Best advice to be given today.
