Unclear if the taliban will make good on that process. Bill so a few moments ago we spoke to Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby. Thank you for your time today. According to the State Department there is a minimum of 100 americans who did not get out. Why . Well, there are a lot of reasons why, bill. There was some a lot of efforts trying to get in touch with them and marshall them in. Some people didnt want to make decisions until the endgame. I dont know the case with each and every one of these 100 or so that are left but what i can tell you is that as a government, well continue to make every effort we can to help them find Safe Passage. Bill i heard you say that yesterday but to quote the commanderinchief. If there are american citizens left well stay to get them all out. That did not happen, admiral. The Military Mission is over, bill. We are no longer on the ground in afghanistan to facilitate that kind of Safe Passage. That doesnt mean the Administration Or Government is going to turn a blind eye trying to help them get home not unlike we do in other countries Around The World when we have americans that are stranded or need help getting out, we have a lot of tools available to us to help facilitate that passage and we will be focused on that. Remind 6,000 did get out. 123,000 total vast majority were afghans in need and all aisles of ours, interpreters and translators. A great effort to make as much as we could of the time we had. Bill im looking at the Population Makeup of that country now between the taliban leadership, isis, al qaeda, haqqani, are we less safe now than we were 20 years ago . I will tell you we are going to stay vigilant about whatever Terrorism Threat might emanate from afghanistan and also tell you, bill, the serious Terrorist Threats to our interest in the region and people and allies and partners havent metastasized out of afghanistan for a long time. Theyve moved elsewhere to North Africa and elsewhere. You see us continue to have the ability of going after these. Bill you did not say yes or no on that in the first part of your answer there. How do you gauge the level of security we have now given the group that i just laid out here . We have much better capabilities there in that part of the world than we did pre9 11. Theyre more networked and sophisticated and have robust presence in the region. In just the last couple of days we took Counter Terrorism strikes to eliminate imminent threats. We have the capability, a greater capability now 20 years later than before we were hit on 9 11. Dana over the horizon capability, have any of the neighboring countries offered to allow us to base out of there so that we can do it better . Were still working with some neighboring nations to see what options might be available, dana. I can tell you that even without those agreements, while Gee Og Gee is a bit of a constrain we still have the capability and you saw it in the last couple of days. Well work with neighboring nations to see what options are available but we do have capabilities right now. Dana here is a question were getting a lot. I understand there is a difference between kabul. But americans wondering why didnt we destroy more of that military equipment rather than leaving it behind for the taliban to possibly use . One, lets talk about the airport. General mckenzie said 70 aircraft were there as well as mine resistant vehicles and humvees. All that stuff was rendered inoperable to the taliban. They can take pictures and look at them but they cant fly them or drive them or use any of the systems that we have at the airport. The other issue is what did we turn over to the afghan forces as we retrogradeed out of the country and what they did with it . Of course we know that there is quite a bit of material in the batch that the afghans had that the taliban now have access to. No question about that. What i would tell you about this, dana, the kinds of equipment were talking about while certainly there is a component to it it doesnt pose a threat to the united states or pose a threat to neighboring nations. These are not the kinds of things that the taliban can make great strategic use out of. Dana another thing there is a report, i would love to get your take on it, that the american government is having to make a tough decision and possibly leaving behind military contract Working Dogs. Is that the case . I will have to look at that one. I did not know there was an issue with military Working Dogs. We are partial to our Working Dogs and theyre heroes in their own right. I was not aware of that particular report. Dana all right. My last question turning back over to bill real quick. One of the things that is frustrating is sometimes what we were hearing from the White House or the State Department did not turn out to be true on the ground. I think about these interpreters, the ones that did help the military. The Military Operation is over, but were tracking one guy in particular and the taliban surrounded his area, they all have guns, they committed executions Last Night and these are the things he is seeing on the ground. When some of the veterans took matters into their own hands to try to get their guys out i feel like they dont think the Military Operation is completely over. I understand that. I want to say were grateful for the interest and efforts that so many veterans and veterans groups have expended in the last few weeks to help our troops on the ground locked and move to safety so many thousands of people. We share their concerns believe me. Not a person here that doesnt share those same concerns and that same obligation to all those people that helped us. Were heartbroken that we werent able to get every single one of them out before the end of the month. But the environment was definitely changing in a more dangerous in the last couple days and we couldnt do it. Well stay committed. Bill a few things here. The head of centcom 2,000 isis fighters in afghanistan. You no he what happened in western iraq and Eastern Syria in 2014. Caliphate was well established before we took it out. How long before u. S. Forces go back into afghanistan . Were going to stay laser focused on the Threat Isisk and isis at large throughout the region. We have robust capabilities available to us and well use them. Making Sure Afghanistan cant become a Safe Haven for an attack against the homeland again. Bill were watching as well as im sure youre aware. Why were so many u. S. Marines outside that airport last thursday . There was a dynamic Security Threat around the airport as you well know and we were trying to meter The Gates off and on to keep people flowing in. Remember, this was an evacuation operation. We had to keep some gates open so that we could move flow in and out. The whole idea was to get people out. Well do an Investigation And Figure out what happened in a way as we move along and we grieve with the families of all who were loss. Bill The End Of August now as you know, did anyone at the pentagon ask the White House for more time . There was very deliberate discussion inside the national Security Team about the timeline we were on and the president made it very clear that he wanted us to look at Contingency Planning in case we needed to go beyond that. We made calculations all the way up to the end. Bill, in the last 48 hours alone before we left you saw us take two Counter Terrorism strikes against very imminent threats posed by isisk as well and we took Rocket Fire the night we were leaving onto the airport. So the Security Environment was changing rapidly. Frankly, we not only didnt want to put our troops at greater risk, but also the people outside in kabul. Afghan civilians who were in the midst of this increasing threat environment. Bill did anyone ask the White House for more forces . No need to ask for more forces. Before kabul fell or after kabul fell. Bill did that not happen then . No one from the pentagon said sir, we need to go above 2500 or whatever the number was on that date. I misunderstood your question. I thought you were talking about the Evacuation Operations and the forces we put in. I wont talk about what military leaders were advising the president through the course of his Decision Making Process. What i can tell you, bill, the Pentagon Leadership here was fully invested in that process. Their voices were heard and thats the way it should work. You bring the interagency together, give their Advice And Counsel and commanderinchief makes the decision and moves out. Thats how it worked here. So i see afghanistan today and i say we accomplished an amazing mission thanks to the Men And Women who went over there and kept us from having another attack organized and executed from afghanistan. We also got there and found out that there were terrible things happening to Young Women, terrible things happening in their economy. We tried to teach them how to have a democracy and we gave an awful lot for them to be able to build and think about what it means to be responsible citizens in the world and give people opportunities. We made a promise that we would help those people and we basically have kept that promise. I theep we continue to keep the promise that we made to bring everybody out of there that we wanted to. All of The Americans definitely but all of those others who helped our serviceMen And Women and Intelligence Community during the war on terror. We have a chance to keep the promise to let them get out and we have to try to do that. But i am on this rollercoaster, frustrated. I think were getting out too quickly. He had that embedded in him he wanted to help every single person he ever ran across. If you were down on your luck he was there to lift you up. He would lend a hand to help and that carried through when he graduated Boot Camp and he trained so hard. I have never seen that. I know him well. He didnt like school and the library but i tell you when he decided he wanted to be a marine, that kid was more focused than ive ever seen and he started training long before he was ever even a recruit. He was the type of teenager that didnt want a drivers license. He would train with the marine corps to learn what they were doing to prepare himself better for when he enlisted and thats what he did right out of High School. Dana i think about parents who raise young people that become marines. Was there something that you recognized early on in his life that made you realize that this kid has got a special way about him in Terms Of Service . Yeah, you know. Im so proud of him and i wish i could take credit but this kid pulled this all out from Deep Down in his heart. In 10 years i couldnt be the man this kid was in two. He is a remarkable human being. We continue our mission to get them out. It is just it has shifted from a Military Mission to a diplomatic mission. We have considerable leverage over the taliban to insure any remaining american citizens will be able to get out. This morning national Security Team has been making the case the attacks on the troops we witnessed would have become more dangerous. Somalia, yemen, parts of africa, all offer the sorts of Safe Haven or the sorts of relatively permissive environments that extremists like that take. It is not clear to me theyll pack up and move to afghanistan. Dana what do you think about the nature of the Taliban Today . There are some questions, for Example Attention Last Night when i saw Secretary Blinken talking about what the taliban pledged to do and its commitments can we really trust the taliban . Dana, you know ive been watching the taliban since we worked together in the bush White House. And i think there is no question we should not trust them. What we should do is judge their actions and not their words. So they are saying a lot of Things Today that i believe are things that they believe we want to hear. So things that might sustain international economic assistance, for example. But we cant be judged on that rhetoric. They have to be judged on what they do and that will play out in the coming days. Bill if i could go back to my question for a moment here. You know what the u. N. Found in early june. They issued a report that 8,000 to 10,000 jihadi fighters from the region had gone to afghanistan because they saw a new Opening And Possibility there. Does that not support the argument that we are going to have issues coming out of afghanistan yet again . Well look, there is no question that there will be extremists in afghanistan. The question is will there be extremists in afghanistan who can threaten us . All the way back to the weeks immediately after 9 11, the one threat of continuity across four add ministrations, democrat and republican is concern about trans national terrorists. We saw this week the islamic State Branch in afghanistan has the capacity to strike in kabul itself. It doesnt make it an immediate threat to the united states. I think this president has focused very precisely on the threat which crosses borders and can actually reach out and touch america. Bill okay. So over the horizon capability. You believe in that . Well look, its a little like belief in the taliban. Ill believe it when i see it. I do believe that these two strikes in the last few days are an example of what is possible with Counter Terrorism capabilities outside of the country itself. So we saw sufficient intelligence by whatever means to target both the islamic state planners in nangarhar and the potential Car Bomb in kabul itself and we saw in both cases strike capabilities launched from outside the country. Those are two examples. I dont think they prove anything yet. They are two positive examples of whats possible. Dana i was thinking about these interpreters on our minds a lot. Were following a few of their stories but there are thousands of them. Only 7 got out. From your perspective especially from the military Role And Ambassador role, what do you think about the promises that we made to them and we didnt keep them . Look, we do have a commitment to them, dana. And i think this is one of the most important parts of judging the taliban by their deeds. The taliban have said their transitional government officials have agreed that afghans and westerners will have open access to both airports and cross Border Land Transit routes. Lets test them. Lets test this proposition. Do they actually offer Freedom Of Travel to these afghans who have not yet been evacuated but who may wish to leave afghanistan . I think this is one of the very first Litmus Tests that we should hold the taliban to. Dana we know that from our own reporting and talking to communication through Someone Else of one of the interpreters that is certainly not happening. The g7 doesnt have the countries may matter the most on the ground in afghanistan going forward. That is the right way forward. Bill John Bolton writes this. Russia and china, our retreating u. S. Beijing will push for more sway in pakistan. Moscow will try in the former serve yet republicans. Soviet republics. From the Propaganda Perspective the russians and chinese are doing donuts in leaving and losing the war. Youve seen videos of the Taliban Fighters in Celebration Shooting into the air with american Material War fighting equipment that they are wearing and they are driving around and some cases flying over the countryside now. And thats a bigger problem for russia and china. You wont see the kind of headlines on afghanistan in the u. S. Over the coming year that youve seen over the past couple weeks once The Americans all get out, assuming they get out safely. Russia and china, afghanistan will start making morehead lines. Thats not good for them. Dana i want to hear more about what they have at stake but im curious what you think the international organizations like the u. N. Or the World Bank or even humanitarian crisis and they are in need of food. What happens then . There is a humanitarian crisis, dana. We have frozen their assets and understandably because we want to show that we have leverage still especially as we are trying to get these remaining americans as well as afghan national out of the country. The taliban has worked with the u. S. So far. Over 100,000 afghans getting out. That wouldnt have happened if the taliban wasnt working with the u. S. But how do you start engaging in giving humanitarian support to a government that almost certainly is going to be behave in ways that are antithetical to everything we stand for . In terms of basic rights of women and in terms of dealing with the right to education and the right to free expression and the rule of law. These people, the taliban have taken over the country at the point of a gun. Nobody voted for them. It will be really hard for the u. S. Or an organization that the u. S. Has lots of input in like the World Bank to provide significant Investment Or Aid to the afghans going forward. Unless there is a Civil War and the taliban falls apart. Parts of the country we can work with and parts we cant. But the idea the u. S. Will maintain some kind of functional Working Relationship with the taliban going forward requires an awful lot of things to go right and lucky over the coming months. Bill the one thing i take exception to the argument. I appreciate the discussion. If you get a hostage situation, you get an american kidnapping of several americans Left Behind. If you get an isisinspired attack that came out of afghanistan, it will be in the headlines yet again here. Yes, completely agree. And that is excepting that. On 9 11 it will be in the headlines again. Look what happened . This isnt over with the exception of january 6th. This is the only issue since the pandemic has hit that has dominated headlines across the united states for a couple of weeks now. I do think there will be meaningful impact on the biden administration. It is why we all, this healthcare team, raised our right hands. We feel the calling to serve when our nations finest need us. They can go out and do what they need to do because we have their back. All Service Members, guys, have been recovered well enough to believe it or not to be medevaced in the last two days back to Walter Reed Hospital and 11 terribly injured afghans were also flown in and theyre okay and they remain in the hospital. I found out he served with my old unit and we bonded over that and Listening to his stories i could tell he was one of the good ones, one of the guys who actually believed in this Mission And Somebody who has a heart of gold. Constantly trying to help people. He saved countless marines lives during his service to the marine corps and even outside of that, during the bombing that happened he was still trying to rush and save as many people as he could. So this is very important that we get him out. Dana charlie, how do you feel about how the united states left yesterday . Its an absolute betrayal. With what the State Department and this administration has done. Theyve betrayed veterans who served there, theyve betrayed the afghans who helped us, betrayed the afghan population and betrayed the american people. Bill so he got airport and got thrown out. We were able to secure during the beginning days of this we were pulling at every string we could to get contact with people on the ground and just by a lucky break we were able to secure a Phone Number for british Royal Marine working the gate and we were in constant contact with him and told us that he would come out and meet carl and walk him through the gate.
