Reporter we are about 14 hours from the storm made landfall we still have a hurricane on deck i keep looking over to see if any changes to downgrade the wind still 75 mileperhour sustained wind and that happens because it came im sure so strong that is the strongest storm we have ever had to make landfall in the us during recordkeeping time and that is by wind not necessarily by lower pressure or meteorological definition so that ties by the way with Hurricane Laura that Made Landfall Southwestern Louisiana Last year two years and were on in a Row Category storms Making Landfall very unfortunate for louisiana it came on land that Port Fourchon 183 miles per hour Grand Isle just east at 146 so where it came on sure at Port Fourchon is about 16 percent of the Countrys Oil Production coming through their obviously all of these oil rigs 16 percent goes through that spot and it fortifies that to withstand Hurricane Conditions so it will be interesting to see what happens to make sure everything is okay and then that is the worst of the Storm Surge and because of that , that will have wiped out anything on stilts most of evacuated but it will be a while before they can get in there im sure by Tomorrow Afternoon to fly over there and get a sense of the damage and pictures coming in from. Incredibly strong storm so now tornado concerns we will see this Today And Tomorrow probably into tuesday or wednesday from the stand and the rotation will spawn a few tornadoes we have seen those around the Biloxi Area this morning already. We will see it again the general notion you see here will continue with us probably through tuesday morning. We will continue to see the storms pull up eventually further into the east for places like pensacola well see some big storms but as long as he have the motion we will see the Storm Surge that is continue to be pulled in and not allow that to drain back down so we will have raising Water Levels again so to take you through the other things noticed right now have a moisture to the north of Lake Pontchartrain and then the Mississippi River that is where all the Levee Systems are going on but what you will notice the rain for the most part is over may be a a few bands can move through but for the most part the Heavy Rain is done and they will be lessening which is good news so that said going to the North Side of Lake Punch a train some cases falling two or 3 inches per hour and then go again up to the east michael, Biloxi Towards Mobile is that a very Heavy Rain to continue right now. Rainfall fallen has been extreme. Areas of Southeastern Louisiana and New Orleans is the biggest population and that is the bullseye were we have seen a lot of areas over 10 inches of Rain Clearing the radar estimates a lot just to the west of New Orleans out toward the airport that is where we are looking we have seen Rainfall Totals in the 12 or 13inch range from the storm. Absolutely phenomenal and the flooding obviously happening today the power goes out daylight is gone into tonight we will not have any pictures until tomorrow. Heres what happens over the next five days with the slow progression. Tennessee valley. Ohio valley. We will continue to see the rainfall. A lot of that moisture will be observed Out Of The Storm that another 48 inches across parts of the south and then a Rainfall Total across the northeast with two other hair hurricanes one tropical Storm Threat throughout parts of the Ohio Valley so they are getting very waterlogged. I have several questions so talking about the Tornado Warnings so where are those watches quick. Down across parts of the south anywhere the center of the storm is let me back up with what you are about to see this will not be very elegant but i want to show you where it is. This Red Box is a Tornado Watch we have been seeing some mornings, its not oklahoma ef for Tornado Kind of thing these are smaller tornadoes that spin out the general counterclockwise rotation that then to hit the landmass as a change of friction from water to land to spin up smaller tornadoes but that can whip off your roof or put a tree onto your house we have seen and a lot of the band of storm that pulls up here is one Band Right through biloxi coming to the east another coming through mobile with those band has been set up and over the same area for hours and hours so the Rainfall Totals are piling up and with that we get a little bit of rotation and can get a small brief tornado but that can certainly cause some damage. We have been speaking extensively about the Levee System a 14 milliondollar levee in louisiana after katrina and you said because the Levee System was basically they were just more prepared this time. Very much. You asked me a little bit ago between the two storms. When a storm comes on sure you see that counterclockwise motion. The right side of the storm is where you have the on sure motion pulling the Storm Surge. That is worse but at the very center of the storm. It was a smaller and stronger storm than Katrina Katrina had a lot of time over water and a category five at one point all that time put a lot of Storm Surge pushing a lot of water with it while the internet Making Landfall as category three the water was there to come on sure. This came on sure at Port Fourchon anywhere to the right of that Grand Isle or Plaquemines Parish where the Mississippi River exits to the golf a lot of water being pushed up into the river this is the worst of the Storm Surge we havent seen many from that area so that is this storm. No katrina came a little bit different it came up across Plaquemines Parish and then made landfall in mississippi so that had 30 feet of Storm Surge wiped out the mississippian part of the Alabama Coastline Everything there was fully flattened i went there one year later there was just labs where the homes had been but just Concrete Slabs and nothing else was left it was all washed away. But in that case but that counterclockwise motion pushed all of the water across Lake Pontchartrain and back towards New Orleans. And the levees were not sure that and that Levee Failure is what then allowed all the water in Lake Punch a train to drain because the levees have failed you cannot get the water out of their. Detrimental. Things for being with us this morning we appreciate it. Now we go to make tobin who has been on the ground all night. The rain is all but gone after he watched hours and hours and sheets of rain coming through New Orleans. We are getting the first reports of damage done. Quite serious. Plaquemines parish we have information one of the Levee Walls or a floodgate i should say run alongside the Mississippi River has failed resulting in Flash Flooding causing Emergency Evacuation despite the conditions despite telling people to get out of that area. That is outside of the Levee System of New Orleans. So the floodgate was very serious water is rushing up highway 23 are also earlier in the evening we had some information that water had overtopped the levee. So Theres Trouble in documents period. Also in the earlier in the evening a number of barges got loose the report is one Barge Hit a bridge and have made impassable we dont know the extent of damage. But nobody can cross it therefore leaving between 30400 people stranded on the other side of the bridge according to the mayor. And those to rescue those people that the conditions were too bad we havent had an update since that time to see if those rescues are underway but we know a number of people are trapped as far as the damage here in New Orleans all of the power is out so it comes to recovering you know there are 1 Million people without power in the greater Louisiana Area all of New Orleans is without Power Power Cruiser at the ready but when they start working out when The Sun comes up they will have a very big job ahead of them. You are talking about the floodgate that failed. Did they expect that to withstand or did they say . Obviously they expected the floodgate to withstand the incoming water but they knew it would be under a great deal of pressure. When they say failure that means it has been damaged and needs to be repaired so it certainly will not be ready for another story that is the extent of your question but it seems to indicate the levees have not failed but the floodgate failed. I asked caroline earlier but have you had a chance to talk to the Red Cross you had the efforts for recovery are displaced people . Not yet. It is too soon at this stage of the game. Even the Red Cross has to assess the damage to determine where to best allocate resources and they dont have that information yet. Live from the ground thank you, mike. In addition to the hurricane we are keeping an eye on a Breaking Story at least five rockets fired toward kabul international airport on monday. We intercepted the rockets but its not clear if all missiles were brought down we are reporting they struck in a neighborhood near the airport. Gunfight immediately followed. Reports of casualties but it is not known who launch the rockets or food triggered the gunfire. The White House reports usled evacuations are proceeding as planned these attempted attacks comes one day before that deadline from withdrawal leaving the taliban in control of the war torn nation.
