So much calmer than the early evening it is past midnight New Orleans it has stopped raining we have some Wind Gust but it is an entirely different scene you mentioned President Biden Disaster Declaration thats huge for the state to bring in federal resources and many but we have not been out on the roads for Search And Rescue has not begun people have been told to shelter in your house dont even come outside until you get the official word it could be days before we know the full extent of the damage. You mentioned there was one death reported have you heard anything as far as any additional deaths or injuries right now . I know the sun is down that will come up eventually and you will have a better grasp and have you heard anything from anyone . I havent mentioning the man who had a tree fell on his home thats all we know officially but there are some folks in danger about 20 miles south 250 or 350 who have been cut off from any type of rescue the bridge collapsed a Levy Overtopped A Vessel Hit the bridge. They think they can start to evacuate them but we havent told the media and officials say you have to shelter in place up to three days before Search And Rescue cantons. The governor was saying there are 14 Billion pumped into the Levee System compared to when Katrina Hit. Obviously there is been a lot of work done to protect the area. How have the Levee System held up and been able to withstand The Storm quick. It looks like they have that the worry is they said we are very confident in the pumping stations. But what they could not account for was there rainfall directly into the city of New Orleans 10 feet above Sea Level basically it is a Bowl Shape and thats a problem you can keep the Gulf Of Mexico out with the levees and make hard to train out but the rain that fell hear that pumps are able to handle half an inch per hour we were getting upwards of three or 4 inches throughout the if one afternoon and early evening. Explain where you are right now. Are you near any type of flooding on the roads . Reporter if you can track the car behind me you can see there is no flooding we are on the iconic Canal Street on the French Quarter this gentle man is rolling through zero water but the wind has been absolutely terrible if you can see the signed on the sign behind me it is supposed to be facing the other way and some time this afternoon the bolts let loose the only thing stopping it was another Sign Weve seen glass come down here in front of the Camera And Metal Signs Plenty of distraction that is in a high well protected part of the city. It will be a much different scene in the lower lying areas looking at some flooding and major disasters. Have you been able to talk to anyone before the Storm Hit or anyone who said it would will they would wait it out because people who were in louisiana when Katrina Hit men even last year they said no. We will ride this out. Did you hear the same sentiment from people you spoke to down there quick. Yes. One was visitors who just didnt do their homework one woman said we just came for the weekend we didnt think it would be that bad. But then it got nasty they tried to get a Plane Ticket and couldnt the planes stopped running they could not rent a car so they are in a hotel farther down Canal Street. But those who wanted to get out but they ran out of time think of the city of New Orleans going from a tropical storm all the way up to as strong as it got within a matter of hours. They did have mandatory evacuations for much of the city that are protected by the city so wasnt mandatory sums that i will write it out as a got worse over the weekend then folks realize their houses may not make it through this one but the structures on can now street with generators and food, this was the place to do it if you are not going to leave the city. I dont know if you could do this yet but have you been able to talk to the Red Cross to see what they will do in preparation of The Storm for people who need help or for the Recovery Efforts . Reporter that is a great question we always talk to the Red Cross. We have not been able to get to them. The rain and the wind was too strong we have not spoken to a lot of officials yet. Reporter its interesting with The Storm The Storm comes on sure with a short aftermath to get a sense of what damage is done and its always midday the following day we start to get in pictures. New orleans is dark right now its hard to get any sense and then the power went out so it will be tomorrow. Maybe even a little bit later than that or the following day before they get into where The Storm came on sure near the coastal area it came on sure i just had this map these are the strongest land following hurricane anywhere in the united states by sustained Wind Speed this gets into the space the strongest storm and that ties with Southwestern Louisiana Last Year Hurricane Laura and a lot of people have not been able to record cover from that system its a very long time and across south eastern Louisiana Port Fourchon there will be a lot of damage to take and assess what is going on. These are the estimated Rainfall Totals you can see this Rainfall Totals over 8 inches of rain and then in a lot of cases probably 15 or 20 inches of rain. Here is New Orleans the Radar Estimate and then around lake want to train around 15 inches of rain incredible amounts obviously all of these polygons, that is Flash Flooding going on right now. It is dark the power is out nobody should be trying to get anywhere and nations they were they are also Tornado Warnings off toward areas around biloxi mississippi. We will see a lot of moisture mostly to the east of the center of The Storm and in this case coastal areas of southwestern louisiana where there is a Storm Surge throughout much of the coming day as well and a lot more rain. Some spots say between eight and 12 inches of rain additionally. Mostly towards mississippi mostly towards alabama so that Storm Threat is with us. This is expected rainfall all of the reds are more than 4 inches sunspots are 8 inches. Once it moves out of the south it moves toward the knowhow one Ohio Valley it will be a wide Spread Area getting between four and 6 inches of rain it had Tropical Storm Fred move through two weeks ago, Hurricane Henri Mr. Last weekend so the ground is saturated and a lot more moisture coming into that area as well. I have to question. One i have two questions so what those can expect in the path. Will flooding be the biggest issue we will see in those states. Reporter yes. Initially when The Storm comes on sure hurricanes can have different worries around them justice Storm Surge or the rain or the wind it had all three. Now the wind is beginning to diminish still at 75 miles per hour which is a hurricane that will go down to a tropical storm. The wind will diminish, the Storm Surge away from the coast doesnt happen the cost will see that for a while then it will subside. Then we will see in Land Flooding that is the story for the next couple of days for the Tennessee Valley and Ohio Valley and parts of the northeast. Obviously there is a lot of comparison to Hurricane Katrina to either one said katrina made landfall that ida has more energy so what is louisiana im more prepared because of katrina with the Levee System . I could talk about this for a very long time if you wanted. First, Hurricane Katrina was a really large storm for the Hurricane Force Wind extended very far out from the Center Hurricane Ida while being so powerful was not incredibly large. But this was the path that Hurricane Ida chuck and to be honest a more dangerous path toward New Orleans any Landfall Hurricane you dont want to be on the right side that is where the worst of the Storm Surge is that with katrina was a category five that made landfall coming in from this direction into the Mississippi Coastline. The storm didnt get much energy was the Mississippi Coastline was destroyed they had a 30foot Storm Surge and it destroyed the coastline i drove down there one year after The Storm and it was still completely leveled. What happened in New Orleans really didnt happen from katrina necessarily but the wind on the backside that pushed all the water from pontchartrain ambassador levies its not that katrina caused it but the Levee Failure from just the wind coming across lake want to train and that is what broke down the levies and ultimately poured all of that water into New Orleans. Because thats with a population was with so many fatalities, then Media Energy went to New Orleans around katrina but the truth is that was because of the Levee Failure not the hurricane the hurricane did all of its damage across the Mississippi Coastline. After that they spend all of that money 14 Billion to shore up the levies and now this is the first really big test and so far it certainly appears that all of that work has paid off. And a painful memory as making landfall 16 years ago. Someone of the things i could tell you with the Levee System so what it is the absence of Bad News specific to New Orleans . And whether the Levee System and that redundancy held up. But outside of the New Orleans Levee System we will have some Flash Flooding to talk about Plaquemines Parish there is an emergency underway because the Flood Wall that runs the length of the mississippi or for that section, a floodgate has failed. There is a Flash Flood in effect so there is water rushing up highway 23. In the northern direction. So they have put out the Flash Flood warning that is an area where earlier in The Storm we had some information that a levee had been overtopped but they are cautious with that information. For the levee itself for the Flood Wall and in this case talking about the failure of a floodgate with the Flash Flood associated with it. Here in New Orleans a major issue at this point is the entire place is without power. You have 1 Million people without power right now from different Power Outages and the trees that fall. But here we have information from the property so it will be sometime and ready to go to work immediately. And then when it was predicted to be Storm Damage and then move that once The Storm has passed. So the crews are ready to get to work but the job is so big with so many Power Outages, 1 Million people we know one person has been killed and that is all we know so we know in one town the mayor says people are stand on stranded right now because of bridges out earlier we talked about 22 barges that got loose. One of those hit the bridge and the bridge has failed the extent they still have to learn that. But 350 are trapped on the other side of the bridge many Boat Captains are ready to move into save those people that our last report but as the Storm Surge leaves you may not be able to get a boat in there safely. You are saying the Bucket Trucks i know it is still dark out right now. But quickly, have you seen any other First Responders . I have seen some on the streets. There was an emergency at a nearby hotel and a Fire Truck did come out progressing and driving around but not large numbers what you get from Emergency Officials they cannot come get people because it is still too dangerous. We do need to get to this at least us military responded by engaging with the missiledefense to intercept the rocket its not clear if the rockets were brought down they struck a neighborhood near the Airport Reports of casualties and its not known who fired the rockets but a short time ago the White House reported the us led evacuations is proceeding becomes just one day after the deadline for the us military withdrawal from afghanistan. Your reaction . The last seven months the afghans have lost more people fighting and we have over 20 years. They had taken 65000 casualties, we have taken roughly 2020 years. The last year and a half we have lost no one. And continuing to plummet 2500 people in effect we were keeping the lid on and keeping terrace from reconstituting and having a Light Footprint in the country. The policy was working. Therefore i think calling it The Endless war or claiming somehow were trying to get involved in a Civil War And Domestic civil war is simply not accurate. We went over there to protect us here At Home we have had not had a Mash Mass Casualty attack in 20 years. I call that a successful policy. Now over the next two days the military is doing the best they can with a horrible policy decision. This is one of the worst Form Policy decisions in history. Very poorly frankly we will not have sources on the ground the over the Horizon Attacks that was carried out was quite limited in effectiveness and every american or afghan ally left behind is a potential victim or hostage remember the taliban loves taking hostages they have done this before the puts us in an extraordinarily difficult position and remember afghanistan is landlocked. One way in by air and one way out. We dont have friends in the neighborhood to provide us the intelligence we would normally get in Syria Or Africa or yemen. So it would be extremely difficult with very little leverage to extract additional americans or afghan allies. From the landlocked country. Chris you say very little leverage you just heard Jake Sullivan say we have a lot of leverage with international pressure diplomatic pressure and especially financial pressure because we in the western allies and frozen billions of dollars in assets that the taliban will very much need to continue to do business. Do not see that as enormous leverage . They have other sources of revenue like the connie one the her Connie Network may have other sources of revenue and of course they are not particularly concerned about international pressure. These are barbarians who certainly are not motivated by what others may think of them in a neighboring countries have been sympathetic to them like the pakistan government has always been sympathetic so they have a friendly neighbor as well three have little or no leverage to get her people out or our allies. One thing that has been encouraging is to see The Americans come back working with their former interpreters communicating with them to get back to the airport may have heard from many in my state they have been working overnight to get to their friends and allies out of that country. It has been quite inspiring to see all these efforts of pitching in trying to help former colleagues. Chris lets talk about pulling out of afghanistan in the first place you opposed it when Donald Trump started the prostate on process your post it when Joe Biden continued the process and then in april he said i will get everybody out by The End of august you noted the fact as you did today that for more than a year not a single american have been killed in combat in afghanistan President Biden was asked about that this week and he pointed out the fact that they did not attack us after Donald Trump made the deal that all americans would get out and look at what the president had to say. I had only one alternative to put thousands more troops back into afghanistan to fight a war that we had already one for the reason we went in the first place. Chris does Senator Biden have a point that if in april he said that Trump Deal is off we are staying and in fact we will beef up the troops he contends we would have been back in a fullscale war and unfortunately taking a lot of casualties. That is totally not accurate once again the president is off the mark we lost as many as 13 people that we lost on thursday and any of the last four years in fact our casualties since 2014 has been quite modest. We have lost more Military Personnel Last thursday than any one of the last four years so the balance has been dramatically reduced for american personnel and then the whole war we have lost a couple thousand of her people that is very regretful that the afghans have lost 65000 they have been fighting we have been in the background helping with counterterrorism and the ongoing training of the military. The policy was working if you remember why we went there which was to keep the taliban out, and the terrorist from being able to operate with impunity to attack us again here At Home. Sullivan talks about the financial advantage the economic advantage to bribe these people to do the right thing i noticed the president was very emphatic about taking action against isisk to Kill 13 Americans on thursday but remember it is the taliban who is responsible for the deaths of most americans of the last 20 years be he has the attitude we will send a Drone Strike at isisk but bribe the taliban to do the right thing even we know for fact certain the department of Defense Ig said over the last year three times they have said they continue to work and in glove with Al Qaeda and also know they have violated apparently a secret part of the Trump Administration Agreement not to attack all those capitals there under liable so the ada to bribe them to be friends is ridiculous. No. The taliban has enormous stash of weapons now they will become the worlds largest Arms Dealer have an enormous as you pointed out they engage in Organized Crime of the distribution of drugs but i hope he is right there and then spending the last 20 years how to hit as the actionable intelligence we have on people inside afghanistan will dwindle over time because we are no longer on the ground and our allies are not on the ground and those that remain there will try to hide rather than being killed. Now we will go to Chief Meteorologist. Reporter hard to believe it came on land 14 hours ago and we still have a hurricane across parts of louisiana. Its just incredible because that event we have Flash Flooding going on everywhere you see the red boxes right now know Flash Flooding out towards the airport that is where we have seen more Rainfall Totals we will see a lot of rain pulling into the east of that but i think the rain is almost over back go just to the east of their toward the goal for or eventually pensacola. We will see a lot of rain so this moisture pulls off towards the north it is like trained on a Train Track moving over the exact same area over and over over allowing the totals to pile up also pulling in this Storm Surge toward the coast so the flooding continues to be a concern and tornadoes as well. That is where The Storm is a want to show you what happens over the next four or five days the Storm Track is weakening just from a tropical depression that an area of low pressure but notice the track we had the flooding last week in waverley with all of the fatalities and 17 inches of rain now more moisture in that area around nashville and then the Tennessee Valley and parts of the northeast towards boston we could be talking four or 5 inches of rain and then two different tropical Storms Fred and Hurricane Henri so all of this has been saturated on the ground and now more moisture brings more threat for flooding. We will see between four and 8 inches of rain across parts of the south and parts of the Tennessee Valley and then areas of the Ohio Valley were it is also saturated was seeing a little bit of wind maybe 25 or 30 miles per hour. We have a long week ahead and then tomorrow we will get some images on what has happened across parts of louisiana images we havent seen yet because we have been going all the way through the sun went down. Do you think the Levee System is withstanding quick. It seems like it is so far doing exactly what it was meant to do a little too early but the wind is coming down and for now i think were in good shape. Finally the courts deciding with the schools to say that Mask Mandates are realistic and good policy again i think its good so the anti Vaccination Crowd and those politicians i see them as having allowed the virus to spread now that suicidal mindset is in retreat.
