You were one of first people to reach out to me immediately, mobilizing assets, where does someone start if you are not on the ground, but you know there are americans and afghans to be saved . So, for me it was reach out to as many assets as i could went marine network of people that i knew, in particular once abdul reached out to me, is a, i started gathering the people i knew on the ground. Getting the points of contact. You knew folks on the ground that is an initial foray. You know, my day job, i am well connected to people that were training over there i was keeping up with who was going to get out. Were they responsive, did you expect they would hear from people back home to try to execute the mission . Yes, they are responsive. I had a few emails back immediately. From guys that were there, said, you know, because of representations and friendships, they were like Hell Yeah lets do this there ab. Abdul, that is the name you went by there, your Brother And Family were stuck. What we found out, i woke up knowing that Green Zone and kabul, the bubble, had burst and collapsing and people are desperate for evacuation, i got on the phone, and trying to reach out to anyone that i could. Mike was there. I reached out to him and i connected but, it took us 6 attempts to get habib out. The most difficult was first one and second, that is when his little ones got hurt, habib got hurt. Beaten on the way through. Real bad. Beaten to the point he was crying on the phone, saying im going to die. Im going to die. Here i was, at older brother. Listening to that, hopelessness. And i cant do anything to save my brother, we served in different capacities this nation. That we call a home now. It was just an emotional horrifying moment in our lives, it was not just me, you have mike and we had other folks that are part of our team that were so heart broken we had do not succeed in our first, second our fourth attempts, finally, we hearded on the phone, we are on 5 different phones hearing different folks saying he is in. We got him, we out he was in u. S. Custody we were relieved. I want to i was on the phone with him. He could touch the marine. And i was screaming to the marine about who i was, marine was told not to answer, i heard him say, sir, im not taking the phone, all i wanted to do was take the phone let me talk to him, he could not, the anaguy i was on the phone when he was getting beat, that is traumatic to know this guy, family, two kids, the wife. And that is a constant story we almost we may have lost a baby on the same thing that was taliban taking people off of the back of the group. Would your brother who works with u. S. Forces, would he have made it out this network. No, impossible. We know that there are other habibs that are they see nothing but a closed gate. And all of the hopes are shattered. In front of their eyes, and face, a team to reaching out to them, doing what we did with habib to do is safer with less getting beat up on the way, but mike is right, we have to record ourselves and voice, where marines on other side could refuse to take phone, we asked habib to play it for them, put us on a speaker phone, us sending signals please help this family get him in the gate. One of those he sent me a video of his Daughter Cowering in fear as a crowd fired aks in the air, he said this is how they are treating us, he got crushed into stampede. He took a a K Stock on the head, and probably dislocate his shoulder, we had to ask him 4 different times to get to this point or that, we got him out, after, that process of you know political contact could military contacts we these people found out what we were doing we got inbound requests of i have a family can you coordinate pickups, as a group we have to do this. And go back through the crowd. And every time they made the movement they go through taliban checkpoints, easy for us to say but you have babies, childrens, wives people from not our world. The connection and contacts. I have peers and mentors people reaching out saying we have these guys, what do we do with them . Ive been playing a facilitating role. What we should point out. Everyone is talking about, afghan military much of afghan Special Forces. We have seen on news. The narrative of Afghan Army folded like a lawn chair. In a broader sense, that is probably relatively true but not that did not extend to everyone. You have a large group of people that served alongside u. S. Special operations forces for a Decade Plus that fought back up to Kabul In kabul. And are now holed up in. I am getting from i imagine you are, that guidance given there is zero interest in attempting to extract any of these guys into the Kabul Air Foal or you know repatriot them somewhere else. Pete they would be target number one, they fought to the end. One of the guys we got out was a straight up afghan citizen, but he spent years in united states, speaks good english at commander didnt need an interpreter, when they would do stuff, he came to u. S. To learn languages and work logistics as a officer. Was there no plan, because they were supposed to be Special Forces to defend afghan government. I think that is right. Pete. While it is what happens probably no surprise to a lot of us people like me, it is clear that No One expected this to happen so quickly. You know, right now you know, our group has connections to probably about 250 to 300 afghan all ranks, all commanders. Majoring to regular soldiers, they are holed up in Kabul In small groups cannot get out, there is no plan, i think in this this is a you know contingency were seeing evolve to revolve and get out. Lets say the gates closed it is american citizens or afghan allies, what happens next. A great question. Were working as a team with other teams to see what we can do to continue to give that hope or keeping the hope alive. Even though the gates are closed. To find a second solution, a plan b. When gates shut. Last plane takes off we have another avenue to save them. That takes a lot of work, we have to stay in contact with local allies. Asking them to burn every document they have before they burn it contact their mentors, allies, supervisor on state side, sense those documents to them, keep them as reference, we will need them to get them out for bureaucracy purposes. Someone is coming for them. Yes. It might not be american government coming for you, there are a lot of american people not giving up. We need political pressure right now from senators, congressmen, to force an effort to help secure a place to continue operations even if this civilian run or whatever, we need do you have faith that the taliban would allow that. Are we not looking at future hostages. Yes. But were not going to just stop. What is the option . If 100 more get out, it is worth it. These people put their blood, sweat and tears to their country alongside us, based on a promise we made, well try to honor that promise. I think some factors to needs to be passed to allies, to see what you can do to stay invisible. But fit in. Carry a taliban flag, put one on your home, show you are there, part of them, stand as invisible as possible, but the challenge is these Terrorist Organizations now have modern technologies, they have Trip Machine Fingerprint machines. Pete would the giving of lists, a big news item, is that something that what you are doing would do . Are you able to do what you hold on, can you do what you do without coordinating with taliban. Sounds like an act of desperation, born out the necessity not a tremendous amount of good options, were in the situation were in. That seems to be a risky decision with low probability of payoff, but maybe no other good options. Pete you are getting people out without coordination with taliban. Were getting zero, with no funding, no military aircraft, no we are private individuals. In many cases, with jobs. You are doing, day jobs, you and on the side. Ive been sitting at Kitchen Table at Fire Station doing calls with State Department and this stuff, and using our white board, i have to go. It is important to point out, i know were calling this a taliban takeover. But, i personally would not call it that, i would call it a transition, they are transitioning from a Shadow Government to an over government, they have run the country the whole time weve been there. They everywhere i was, there was their Shadow Government, they did administration. They had police, they had courts and judges. And this is not possible without an overwhelming amount of support, popular support for good or bad. What can you tell us about that and when did it happen. It happened moments ago. I spoke to a senior Defense Official who confirmed that 5 rockets were fired at the Airport at the Kabul International. Where the u. S. Troops are trying to Retro Grade and also still allow some, evacuees through the gates as they get close to August 31 deadline, the military engaged the Cram System, that is counter Rocket And Mortar system, there are no casualties at the Airport, a tense moment. We had Terror Warnings. We have had Terror Warnings at the Airport, you heard President Biden say that an attack was imminent in next 24 to 36 hours. Military earlier in the day, stopping two Suicide Bombers who were in a car that was filled with explosives, the drone flew from base in united emirates, took out the Isis K Threat in a vehicle en route to the Airport, they were parked at the time that the drone struck. As Hours Wind down we get closer to deadline and u. S. Forces leaving, there seems to be increasing Terror Threats on the Airport. Do we know for sure, if this was that threat, State Department and President Biden were talking about unon friday. 24 to 36 hours. Is this when they were talking about . There are multiple Threat Streams, this is part of the matrix of threats that were expecting rocket attacks, and threats again planes, that have been taking off. They have been expecting more Suicide Bombings that gates where so many afghans are waiting and americans trying to get through. Those gates. And so they, they know that there, a number of threats, they were able to mitigate one earlier with the Drone Strike on that explosive laden vehicle. But the threat continues. What were seeing tonight is those 5 rockets fired at the Airport, another threat to u. S. Forces. A successful interception by cram missile system, troops were protected. Can you go to detail about this C Ram Missile system, how that works. How it was able to be more or less thwarted in avoiding casualties. In Gulf War we heard about Missile Interception for short and mediumrange missiles in iraq there is a lot of Mortar Fire and Rocket Fire to u. S. Embassy, and basees. Military has come up with systems, one is the c ram. Counter Rocket And Mortar. It is for the shorter range rockets. It and from what i understand from Military Source its was successful tonight. Since the deadline is tuesday daw, president Bidens Deadline to withdraw americans and troops from afghanistan. From kabul. Do you think in your opinion, does this change what is to come by tuesday . Do you think there is a chance that deadline could be extended. Seems not to be a lot of opportunity to get out. It made getting through the gates more difficult in last 24 hours. We noticed most of the gates have been closed. And even one gate they have been using. Has been closed for much of the day, it is very difficult to get the large numbers of the evacuees to the through the gate, on the tarmac. That is now at 5 or 6,000 in the last 24 hours. It when there is Rocket Fire on the Airport-or-suicide'>Airport Or Suicide bombers, heading to the Airport it is more difficult to keep the gates open. The main that will right challenge is how to get the evacuees through particularly american citizens, we heard of instances where and Green Card holders are stopped not only by taliban but cannot make that final 20 yards to get through the gate. That is because there is such a great concern, you would understand that after Suicide Bombing this week that left 13 american service members dead, that there is a real challenge of how do you open that gate up to let worthy, evacuees through and protect the tarmac and troops inside, i dont know there is a chance that President Biden will extend the deadline of August 31. There is already Retro Grade by military has begun, has every Day And Hour goes on the threat against the Airport will rise. And taliban are getting anxious for u. S. To pull out, Isis K sees this as their last opportunity to target american troops, i think were in that very dangerous last two days where the u. S. If it is such a challenge to get american citizens out, what does that leave for u. S. Military getting out. Correct me if i am wrong, sounds like they will have an issue getting out as well. With the threats. No, u. S. Military has a plan they have as weve seen, they have the missile defense system, that cram creme, that unprotects them again the smaller rockets and Mortar Fire. It is dangerous. There is No Doubt. There is a dangerous mission. It was from the get go. They have gotten 117,000 people evacuees out of kabul as we speak. But, the window is closing for more evacuees to exit through the Airport with help of u. S. Military, that does not mean in days after the u. S. Military is pulled out after August 31, that the u. S. Government will not try to work through allied partners like qataris and other local governments, who are on the ground, like the turks who are supposed to work with the taliban to reopen Airport for private flights, to come in, the u. S. Government will work very hard diplomatically to try to spill help any still help any american citizens or any Visa Holders or Green Card holders to get on flights over overland to other neighbors countries to get them to safety. There are only i think important to remember there are about 300 americans who have u. S. Passports left in afghanistan. Dozens of those americans dont actually want to leave, the State Department is in a Race Gain the clock. They against the clock, they have a commitment from president to get any american who wants to leave out, they will do so. But, some of those americans are having trouble as we heard at checkpoints. It will if they are left, there is going to need to be diplomatic arrangements, the qatari government has been particularly helpful, i think when all is said and done, you know well learn of many, many heroic efforts by ambassadors from friendly countries who have committed to helping americans leave the country, and worked closely with the u. S. Government to arrange that. You think that Biden Administration will rely heavily on our allies to help them get out . Well, i think they have been relying on our allies, i think they will continue to do so. Because, they have to. We dont have a u. S. Embassy open in kabul any more. We have a empty u. S. Embassy that is not being guarded by any u. S. Troops. You can imagine what could happen in the days or months to follow. Secretary of state said today that he did not expect to have a u. S. Presence at that embassy any time soon. The u. S. If there are any americans, left, they will have to work quickly and carefully with allied countries that do have relationships with the taliban. And number one on that list are the qataris and the turks. U. S. Government is not giving up on any americans who want to get out, but it will become difficult after all 31. It is after August 31, and difficult for u. S. Military to open the gates right now with incoming Rocket Fire. You are u. S. Military is in a difficult situation, it is trying to Retavase Re Retro Grade and get maximum number of evacuees out. And then lets talk about that with the next 48 hours, looming with the deadline, what can we expect to see from your sources . What do you think well see here . Well, i think were seeing is that the number of evacuees on Airport-tarmac'>Airport Tarmac is you want steadily dwindling, maximum one gate open at the Airport, State Department and marines or soldiers who are guarding that gate have a very difficult task how do you pat someone down, let someone in. Know who they say they are and not have a Suicide Bomber make their way on to the tarmac. It is a tense situation, people are working under incredible duress. Weve been in touch with groups of people trying to make their way to the Airport. They are vulnerable afghans, journalists and others. Women, academics, children, and who have been in schools, that feel they have been threatened by the taliban, who the u. S. Had promised they would try to help. But right now, the taliban are not letting them through the checkpoints. You know just on the periphery of the Airport. That is the real challenge right now. The people cannot get through. It is a very chaotic situation. These rockets fired into the Airport does not help. Everyone is on edge. It is difficult to keep the gate open with rockets coming in through the Airport. I can only imagine. Jennifer can you reflect on the service that was held for 13 fallen marines at Airport-today'>Dover Airport Today . It was very solemn, extraordinary ceremony, you saw President Biden, first lady, members of his cabinet, entire joint chiefs, senior civilian leadership of service secretaries of pentagon standing at attention. As the 13 caskets draped in the flags were guided to the waiting vehicles. It was very emotional. I have talked with people who were there. And the families were distraught. Their lives will never be the same. But they also were told by membership of the senior leaders, they many of the season why are leaders, they can know, some facebook posts we have read of those who did die, who were in service, they you know ill never forget a one post by sergeant nicole gee, one of two female marines killed in the Suicide Bombing, she wrote on our facebook post, she was holding a baby she helped to rescue, she said, you know i love my job. I think any marine who has served would look at that, and say, she gave her life to save others. And that is a noble calling that is what all 13 of these heroes did. They sacrificed their lives so others could live. And it is very saturday at dover sad day at dover, very emotional for the leaders and family members, they will never be the same it was a very hard ceremony to watch and cover but important to honor to bestow. Back to that photo of the young marine holding the baby, i think that anyone who has been on internet has seen that. It has gone viral. We thank them for what they did in their service, to the u. S. What is your response to that, what do you take away from what happened this last 30 minutes. Hardly surprising, we had warnings that would happen, that were public. The Cram System is an area defense system, in a strange way related to israel iron dome, what is happening now, 31 is deadline, but how this unfolds afterwards is with the next chapter. And there is a great untruth propagated. That there is a clear line of differentiation between the taliban and isisk. History, says something different. Bagram airbase was built by soviets during their incursion to afghanistan. And when we left bagram in middle of night, we left thousands of socalled isis, Ice Kfighters behind. Who were then liberated by taliban, and taliban say they are their enemy, and not known that Isis K group was founded by a splinter of members of the taliban, they go back and forth. Afghan is you a mixture of am. All of a sudden they are good guy, trying to seek international recognition, diplomatic legitimacy to make sure they are never over thrown again, and using spector of Isis K as a foil, that gives administration a fig leaf. You have is a parade of horribles. And a gross untruth perpetuated to the world. No Doubt Taliban has fully penetrated it would be great if we, you know jennifer, you know if we could develop some of these ideas, and kind of question this narrative that is pushed on american people. The people of the world. Yeah. You made a good point that Biden Administration is trying to draw that clear line between Isis K and taliban, they are both Terror Groups. How worried should this make. Not only americans but our allies that were buddying up with taliban and relying on them to help us. We are buddings up to them, this is political purpose. Of the Biden Administration, i do not doubt when dust settles they per saying see we ended americas longest War Bidens numbers were slipping before this happened. They have Infrastructure Bills running through congress, a huge problem, they saw this size an easy win, it blew up in their faces, now, as a Salvage Effort they are trying to rehabilitate the image of taliban for domestic political importance, and this serves talibans interest. And in return, i think you get at least promises behind the scenes of taliban of some sort of dangling a cooperation with regard to repatriation of americans, this is an unholy brotherhood that needs to be looked brood that needs to be look into. Real problem begins september 1. That is when afghanistan is fully under taliban control. Our problems will begin on sent 1 september 1, they dont end August 31. Jennifer said that there is about 300 or so americans that are still in afghanistan. President biden said you know after the 31st deadline, he would still work to try to get those people out who wanted to get out. She said that could be relying on turks. What are your thoughts on that after what happens after August 31 with those people who may not get out, were seeing the attacks at Airport is making it hard target out. Harder to get out. Yeah, that is a great set of questions. Were relying right now on State Department numbers when americans go to foreign countries, they are advises to register but not required. To were dont know real number of u. S. Citizens there is that assuming that State Department is telling truth. At minimum, you have a number of hostages. A minimum. How do they get out .
