Despite assurances from President Biden that americans and vulnerable of a gaps are able to make it through armed taliban checkpoints with no problems to reach the airport here at the pentagon. John kirby acknowledged some people are having a hard time getting in. Certain whether i mindful of these reports and deeply troubling. Indicated to the taliban thats Absolutely unacceptable. When those are hovering and they are on the ground, they are very vulnerable to rpgs to attack and it says a lot that they had to launch and land just 200 yards. You think it was safe, you could have the soldiers go out there and grab them and walk in or take vehicles. Or just wave from the front gate hey, come in here. Instead you have to launch three helicopters, three chinooks carry a lot of people and break them back over the walls. These are the americans that President Biden mentioned yesterday. And President Biden wants to pull up Tent Stakes and its unfathomable. Rachel congressman, some people have speculated the reason we have this timetable of getting out right now instead of more of a slow exit was that the biden administration or Joe Biden himself wanted this September 11th like this moment, this September 11th Coming Up and we are out of afghanistan and some sort ofdo you believe that . Is there any explanation that you have of why this happened on this particular timetable and without leaving, as pete mentioned, some sort of force behind . I think at this point, its the taliban that are telling us when we are supposed to get out. And President Biden is trying to browbeat them. This is not this is completely a timetable that we can change. We can take that force back as you have guys were mentioning earlier. We are a super power. We went and got Bin Laden in his sleep in abottabad. And yet its somehow mission impossible to potentially send our forces a couple of blocks away from the airport. I mean, its insane the position we are in. And how dependent we are on, frankly, the Talibans Goodwill rather than actually standing up and doing whats right for American Citizens and our royal afghan allies. In the president s speech, he was talking about our allies being grateful and understanding that america was back and that we they were supportive of this move. I had not even had an hour since i got off the phone with one of our loyal with one of our longstanding Allies Ambassador from longstanding ally who was furious, who felt betrayed. Just how outoftouch President Biden is, extraordinary. I honestly cant explain it either the situation is moving too fast for him to keep up with or he is trying to put the rosiest possible spin on a situation that still can get very worse. By leaving early, by trying to get rid of this, you are only guaranteeing this problem will grow increasingly worse, American Citizens lives are and will continue to be put at risk. You brought it up afghan allies and the refugee situation. I know you advocated very thoroughly to get some of these people out Behind Enemy Lines essentially. The numbers are staggering to me. Will every time i hear these numbers, i dont know. Sometimes 30,000, 50, 60,000 people. I know we owe people out of a duty of honor to help them, but i know there is also a Balancing Act with protecting american Interest And Security here. Can you help me understand how big is the population of people we are trying to resettle out of afghanistan and is that a concern . Should that be a concern for the american people . Yeah. So, right now that number because, remember, we have been at war there for 20 years. I mean, the amount of individuals who were interpreters on the battlefield or helped in interrogations or advising us, you know, working in the villages. Its around 15,000 to 18,000 and then some of those have a spouse, you know, they might have one or two kids. Im trying to help a friend of mine who has he has four young children, you know, under the age of 5. The thing to remember is these individuals by and large, speak fluent english, have been working with u. S. Forces for years. Some for decades. Are known to us. Have passed, you know, counterintelligence screenings, you know, i think people saw the images of individuals running to get ton that c17 and thought this was just random folks being flown directly to the u. S. If there was any question on someones status, those planes get screened in qatar. People are getting sent back who dont meet any of the qualifications. The only folks coming directly to the u. S. Are American Citizens, Green Card holders, or individuals with a valid visa. So, i think we need to make sure that anybody whose life is at risk because of the service they gave to the u. S. , and, remember, we made promises to those who signed Up To be interpreters and others. We said if this day comes, we will get you. We will help you out. So i think its critical for our National Security that we protect those individuals and we keep those promises. Or the next country we are in, however many years down the road, people are going to look at us and say why the hell should i help you . You turned your backs on these folks. Or maybe we did but we never executed that plan. But here are the things we are going to do from here on out. And that includes the over the Horizon Ability to continue to monitor whats going on with alqaeda. The reality is that the 5,000 people that were released from the prison, some of those were taliban. Some of those were islamist state of your zan the isis it In Afghanistan. Some alqaeda members. We are in a situation where things are incredibly vulnerable on the Ground And Washington denial are not going to change that reality. So, i struggle to make something of this because it just seems so disconnected with what Im Hearing from people inside the airport, people outside the airport. Folks who actually understand the situation. And are just getting fed, you know, very carefully crafted talking point. It was the adsf that was doing it however the announcement of the full withdrawal and the implementation of the full withdraw completely damaged and hurt the Morale And Motivation that the adsf has. Are you surprised that the administration has, you know, fired her or what do you think about that . Well, actually, really happy with how with how this has gone down. Like, they worked really quickly. I have been in contact with one of the board members. She said they usually have like a 24hour Period before they even take any kind of action and after they watched the video they were so appalled they knew they had to take action the very same day. And so were just really impressed how its gone down. The only disturbing part is, we have had so many people contact us that have said that they have had her in the past or my child has had her in the past. She was the exact same way. We have had a friend who had her 8 years ago said she was the same way in the classroom. And we know that people have like turned her in, they have complained about her. Why has not something been done. Is that why she felt she was untouchable that nothing could be done to her . Thats the disturbing part. I think a lot of kids see things they know are inappropriate in the classroom and theyre afraid they might suffer from their grades or get some sort of social backlash from it for turning in the Teacher Or Recording this. Now that you are seeing this on video. We have had a year of zoom by the way and parents kind of seeing whats going on in the classroom and being appalled at whats being taught in general and also some of these kinds of comments. Do you think we should have cameras permanently in the classroom so parents are able to check in and see whats going on so the pressure is not on the kids to secretly record things that are inappropriate . Do you think we have a right as parents to see whats going on in the classroom especially in light of this. I think thats a tricky question. I think so many things can be misconstrued as or taken out of context. You see something on camera can it be taken out of context. And see something on camera and be so blatantly in your face. So, thats a good question. There are so many pros and cons. I dont want to relate it to like police having cameras and you see things but its not always being transferred the way it is. Visa application is almost approved and what were basically waiting on now is for the State Department to issue him a passport to get through. Even then, to make it to the airport is a pretty bad situation. Once you are there getting Up To the gate is even worse. Our first 27 hours that we worked on this we were able to get him to the gate i had a contact that was going to walk him and his family through. However the ana started a massive Gun Fight with the shut down the airport for the next 24 hours. And during that time his entire suffered massive injuries from the taliban and the ana. In and around the airport. We decided to pull back and put him some place safe until we can get the actual order we can get him through. Rachel so now lets go to John Kirby at the pentagon. Hes the spokesperson there who says, no, thats not true. Alqaeda is there. We know that alqaeda is a presence as well as isis In Afghanistan. And we have talked about that for quite some time. We do not believe it is exorbitantly high but we dont have an exact figure for you. As i think you might understand. But the president just said that there is no Alqaeda Presence In Afghanistan. That does not seem to be correct. What what we dont think is what we believe is that there isnt a presence that is significant enough to, to merit a threat to our homeland as there was back on 9 11 20 years ago. And here is yet another example of either incompetence or lying and it can be described in no other way but President Biden saying No One is questioning our credibility on the World Stage. So, less than a year ago. On the ground. In kabul. Were going to play a portion of some of the reporting you did then, which is very relevant to the discussion we are having now. Here is Benjamin Hall In Afghanistan, november of 2020. The taliban are not only knocking on the door of kabul. They already are inside kabul. Districts like this are taken over by the taliban At Night. When night falls they come in and put Up Road Blocks and arrest and kill people who work for the government. The people who work and live here know thats exactly whats going to happen when the u. S. Leaves. Just a couple of miles outside of kabul in every direction, the taliban are in control. Night after night they launch attacks on Police Checkpoints and they take over districts like this. They are knocking on the door of kabul and many people feel it is only a matter of time until they move in. Pete wow it feels like the kind of preview that just that explains exactly what happened when so many people were caught off guard. You certainly werent . Yeah. And then to hear the president say that well, the intelligence didnt really suggest this but perhaps there was more time. They were not likely to have fallen was remarkable for me when i heard that when we were there last november. Thats all we heard is that the taliban are already inside kabul. They come in At Night with kill lists. They know who has worked for the americans. And they go and hunt them down. You better believe that every one of those tens of so you sands of of a begans who worked for the americans, they are sheltering and cowering in place right now. They know they are on a list. The tall ban already have it and theyre looking for them. As soon as you leave kabul, they are totally and were totally surrounded last november. How this intelligence got so wrong or how it wasnt passed onto the president or how he misread it or how he thinks he didnt tell the truth about this is staggering. And when we were there as well, we were speaking to the u. N. Who said we know alqaeda are in this country. We know there are alqaeda forces embedded with taliban forces in some parts of the country. They work and learn together with Each Other. And then today when you hear that the Haqqani Network have taken over kabul. The Haqqani Network are alqaeda. They have longstanding relationships with Bin Laden. So, again, we know alqaeda have been working with the taliban for a long time. We know the taliban were poised to take over that city and were just waiting to do so. We know that people back then were begging for some kind of residual force to stay. And they simply didnt. Rachel interesting. Pete the next question is benjamin, simple one, why. You addressed it a little bit. Why would if there is so much at stake, so many citizens there. The legacy of a 20year war at stake, why would you ignore the reality . Because i was there in 20112012. The taliban controlled the countryside a couple miles from where our base was. And we knew it. There were checkpoints. If that hadnt changed and only gotten worse . Why ignore that intel . Who does it benefit . Look, home, thats a political decision. Tough assume this was a political decision. As you have been saying all day there are so many other decisions that President Biden reversed it president trump, this is one he decided not to do. I will make another point, which i found very interesting. When you spoke to a lot of people in the afghan countryside, villagers who lived in this part of the country who were still under attack every day where the Afghan National Army fighting the taliban, many of them did say to me you know what . We would welcome the taliban coming in if it meant peace. After 20 years, you know, whatever it comes with, we accept. And of course that worked for men and pashtuns it doesnt work for women o. Azarys. There was that feeling outside the city. And in that sense it is a tale of two country. City like kabul Know Nothing else but the freedoms given to them by the u. S. Vast areas of the country fed up with war and wanted some kind of a change. Thats whats very hard to balance right here. But, its fascinating and bizarre political decision to have made. We have all been saying its not necessarily the decision to pull out that is so wrong. It was how it was done. Now the embassy is saying to americans, specifically, do not come to the airport. What do we make of that . I have never seen a president Make A Statement and within the same hour have both his State Department and Department Of Defense refute everything he just said. And thats what we had yesterday. Im not exaggerating or being partisan here. Now are not. Thats literally what happened yesterday. I will say we dont know why this the ambassador issued this, if theyre doing that because they are putting together a plan to go strategically get these people . Thats great. But that still refutes everything the president said. So, a lot of us have been calling for the military to use the tools they have and the skills they have to get these people home safe. I think it makes sense to go get these citizens with the military rather than ask them to come to the airport. I mean, some of the reporting you have seen its incredibly volatile all the way around the airport. If thats the case, thats probably a good thing. I know it takes a toll on a dozen vets. When you talk to veterans, this botched leaving of afghanistan and the withdrawal, what kind of toll is it taking on afghan vets . You know, pete, im exhausted. Im not exhausted because i have set in this chair for hours a day this week. Im exhausted because for the first time in 11 years this week really made me relive all the emotions from 2010 when i was blown up and recovered. And it made me second guess and rethink every single part of that i said on the air yesterday. That the day i got blown up. 11 years ago to this month, i didnt have regrets, and i didnt have fear. I wasnt afraid to die because i knew that my parents would be notified and they would understand and be told swiftly what happened. And i didnt have regrets because i knew my death that day might meant that other people live. And i just cant imagine how the parents of people in Afghanistan Today feel because they dont have that luxury to know that if something happens to their loved ones, they are going to be notified quickly or their loved ones will be brought home dead or alive quickly. We just dont have that assurance. I think that has really thats been very difficult for me and i think its been difficult for a lot of the vets i have talked to. Much less about our sacrifice and where we are today. Because we still care about the fight. We still care about the people in the fight. We want our marines over there, our soldiers over there, to have the opportunity to defend themselves and get the job done or bring them home, which is what we have been saying for a couple years now. Yesterday President Biden said the evacuation was going well and americans have had no problems going to the airport to be evacuated. We are certainly mindful of these reports and they are deeply troubling. We have communicated to the taliban that that is Absolutely unacceptable. That we want free passage through their checkpoints for documented americans. And by and large, thats happening. This as powerful images are pouring in from the Defense Department showing you are u. S. Marines and soldiers, americas Sons And Daughters holding a line at the airport keeping perimeter safe to make sure Air Force Transport planes can launch. Helping comfort afghans fleeing their country. American troops clutching afghan babies in some cases parents giving their kids over to the americans for a chance at a better life. Getting out of kabul was an absolute horrifying experience for me. Im very grateful im alive. To be quite honest quite worried and concerned about all those millions of people who are Left Behind In Afghanistan and they have nowhere to go to. My heart just bleeds for them the situation In Afghanistan right now is really concerning. People, you know, those thousands and thousands of people at the airport trying to get into the planes on top of Each Other, kids were crying and screaming. So many, like thousands of people from provinces they have come to kabul and they dont have to shelter. They dont have food to eat. The situation is really really bad. Its really bad. Ainsley thank you for joining us on the show. I have seen your music videos. I know how popular you are around the world and especially in that area of the world. It i have just a question for you. When i see the images and im glad you got out. But some of the images we have seen are these giant Cargo Aircraft packed with people and most of them are men. And im confused because we here always think of women and children first. Can you help me understand because it seems to me from everything we know about afghanistan, that it is women, women like yourself who have defied some of these cultural norms, young girls, who are at risk of being, you know, soldier into Sex Slavery with the taliban. Christian, minorities, how is this why are there so many men and not as many women and children on these Rescue Aircraft . You know what . You are Absolutely right. I totally agree with you on this. One of the priorities for america right now is to get out only the American Citizens people who have American Citizenship and passport. Unfortunately those Passport Citizenship they cannot get to the gate where there was a American Military base with a plane a c17 so they can get them out. All these other people from every part of afghanistan and most of them men as you have said they have rushed into the airport and they are trying to get out of there and obviously, you know. Its understandable as well because they are all they all fear for their life. They are taking any risk. Get out of afghanistan. They are scared of the taliban. Taliban dont have a good history In Afghanistan. Everything they did 20 years ago, they fear that all that will happen all over again, all over again which is really sad, and unfortunate. I mean, its very unfortunate to see that the world, the entire world left afghanistan in a situation like this they let taliban take over country in a few days. In a matter of few hours i was in kabul when taliban just took over and started walking to the airport when i had a flight on the 15th of august. I was supposed to fly out. And then we heard like shooting and then within a final few minutes the entire airport was empty of the source and security. They run away. They left the airport to the people. People rushed into the planes. Each and every plane was filled with thousands of people and there was no room, there was no oxygen to briefth breathe. Kids were crying and screaming. The women were crying. Its all chaos. Its a chaos. And i dont understand how can that happen . You know, what kind of a game is being played In Afghanistan right now . We are all confused about it its just very unfair for the people of afghanistan. Its unfair for the u. S. Army for all those lives that were lost In Afghanistan over the years. What about them . Like, the world has forgotten why they went to afghanistan initially. What were their plans . They were there to get rid of alqaeda and get rid of taliban. And then 20 years later after all this money, the millions and trillions of dollars that were spent In Afghanistan all the lives that were lost, they would just suddenly lee afghanistan in chaos and they come back. I understand and i appreciate the fact that they trying to get the u. S. Pete citizens. Civilians passports out. What about the millions Left Behind In Afghanistan they have nowhere to go to . Its just horrifying. And its crazy. I dont understand. Im really confused. Will you describe the situation at the airport we hear in your words the images of chaos. Take me on the way to the airport if you will. And it may be some there is timing differences between whats happening now and when you got out. But we hear the reports of how difficult it is to get to the airport. The streets controlled by the taliban. I hear you talk about a horrifying experience. Were you confident you could even make your way to the airport . Oh my god, not at all. You know what . As i mentioned earlier, on the 5th of august, i was supposed to have a flight at 8 00 p. M. In the evening. The commercial flight. So, 2 00 in the afternoon we went to the airport a bit earlier. Because the airport was in chaos. And unfortunately, as i mentioned. The the security and the airport left the airport for the people and the airplanes got filled up with people and there was no space for anybody. And the plane didnt take off because, obviously, the pilot run away as well because they were scared. Because there was people inside the planes with guns. They were armed. And so, we had no choice but to try to get out of the airplane on the 15th of august, which was big risk for me. Because i have been a direct target of taliban for the past few years because despite the fact that im a singer and i have been a judge on the biggest Music Show In Afghanistan. I have also been a very outspoken womens Rights Activist and i have talked against them and i have posted against them for some years now. If they would catch me alive god know what is they would do to me. You know, so, we heard that the taliban are walking towards the airport. I was thinking with my fiance if i stay here inside the airport and if they come inside and they ask for names and for identities, the first person that they would catch would be me and my fiance. So, this was around chock At Night. We decided to walk out of the airport. Unfortunately there is only one road that you can walk outside the airport or come into the airport. You have to go through that road even though we heard the taliban were walking toward the airport we had no other option. So we started walking and when we were walking out hundreds of more people they are coming in and just running towards the airport and we reached the end of the road and finally we hear gunshots like right in front of us like away. We have a video we can share with you guys later on if you want us to. Gunshots. Im not sure if this was a Security Person or if this was a tall lab. Im really confused. Unwith of them run towards us with a huge gun in his hand where are you going . in pashtun language. I was lucky to get out. In afghanistan right now, the hijab that women wear i was wearing that you could only see my eyes with glass. I was trying to hide myself as much as i can and my fiance also the same thing. Where are you going . We just want to get out of here. Okay. Get out. He with was shouting and rushing us. My fiance asked him do you belong to the Security Team . First he didnt understand its okay. Look, the taliban is coming with us as well. I look around and i see a group of entire tall within a one of them being the leader. He has white clothes and has his hands behind him and he is like he looked at me. I remember like im shivering right now when i talk about this. He looked at me we met eye to eye and quickly i looked away because i was scared of him recognizing me somehow. And then there was like gunfire. We walked through the gunshots. Thousands of people there. Shooting in the air. People trying to get to airport. Somehow we managed to get into the car that my Fiancees Cousin had brought to rescue us from there. Then the next day, so, basically thAt Night he took us to his house. We get to his house, and then the next morning we wake up and he we see a bunch of taliban coming to the same area where we were hiding news of them searching house to house. We left all in fear thinking okay what if they come to this house and they recognize me . What do we do . Pete aryana real quick, we are almost out of time. How did you get back to the airport real quick . Basically, the next night about 1 chock At Night, we tried to make a trip to the airport, no matter what happened, we took two cars. Me in one car and my fiance in the other car with some women and children and we went past through five security checks and one of them stopped our car but he put the little light inside the car and when he saw a child with me said okay, go. We went through the Check Point and got to the other side of the airport u. S. Military bases. A little metallic door that you have to go through inside the base, unfortunately that road is like really little and filled with thousands of people waiting to get inside. And then it was a nightmare to get through all these people to the gate. And then you got through the gate and showed them our passports and initially they were not letting us in because i have u. K. Passport not american. And my husband is afghan canadian. There was one translator who recognized us. He was afghan and he told the soldiers look, this is a famous Singner Afghanistan and you need to get her out of here. They were nice enough to let us in and thats how we got in. Rachel harrowing. On the 20th anniversary of 9 11, the taliban is going to make sure that they and alqaeda and the Haqqani Network who are the afghan alqaeda will see the taliban flag flying over all of afghanistan.
