We as americans, we went in And inspired them to follow their dreams of becoming journalists And doctors And lawyers And Human Rights advocates. They succeeded. Military flights evacuated 2000 more people. Over the last several days we have processed more than 4840 people for evaccination. Evacuation. We communicated with u. S. Citizens about specific instructions about where to go for evacuation plates. We will have visa Holders Board flights to the united states. We are expAnding our notifications to transmit information about Evacuation Options to each group. We will continue to accelerate our efforts including by working with our allies And partnersto identify And assist afghans eligible for Refugees Status And other afghans at risk. Yesterday the taliban held a Press Conference where they claimed they intend to allow women to work And study. But only within what they called their quote framework. The united states And the international community will be vigilant in monitoring how any future government in afghanistan ensures the rights And freedoms that women And girls in that country have come to expect. The united states joined 20 other nations this morning to confirm that commitment. This is personal for me And for many across the federal government. In 1997, i joined then secretary of State Albright when she visited afghan women And girls in a Refugees Camp in pakistan. Secretary albright told them, it is impossible to modernize a nation where half or more of the population is left behind. That was one of the most searing meetings hi as a diplomat. Women who were doctors And teachers And home makers talked about how they could not do And have their lives anymore. That memory will never be wiped from my mind. Societies could not flourish And prosper without the full participation of women And girls back then And they cannot flourish And prosper without women And girls now. In the last 20 years, afghan women And girls have embraced their freedom. Millions have gone to school. They have become doctors, lawyers And journalists And entrepreneurs And built a life that Secretary Alalbright encouraged them to do so many years ago. During the Obama Administration i traveled To Kabul. I met with women And girls in both cities And saw the amazing things they had accomplished. Their talent And the drive. The society they were working hard to build. I met with afghan Women Leaders in my time as Deputy Secretary of state to hear from them. These ambitions And their dreams And the progress they made for themselves And their country are things i carry with me every day. The united states And our allies And partners will continue to fight for afghan women And girls And Secretary Blinken And the President Of The United States join me in that drive. We are working with the international community to help those who are vulnerable to taliban reprials to get to aircraft. We will use every diplomatic tool we have to hold the taliban accountable to their words And more. With that i will take your questions. [inaudible]. [crying]. Thank you very much. I appreciate this. Many afghans are going to the And-taliban'>Airport And Taliban are beating them. The expectations is very high. I cant do anything. I am a journalist. [inaudible] . Thank you very much. Thank you. It has been so long. You cant call you wendy anymore. Madam Deputy Secretary. That sounds good. Its a mouthful. You will get used to it. I am sure. On the immediate question, you said you are surging the member of officers at the airport. Well, all of that is great. But if People Cant get to the airport And i realize you mentioned this, the issue, if People Cant get to the airport it doesnt really matter, how many people you have there . My question is. What exactly are you telling the taliban that is going to happen to them if they dont start letting in it not just americans, but afghans who are at risk And potentially afghans who are at risk who dont have all of the necessary Paper Work they might need to get out . Thank you, matt. We know each other well enough for you to know i am not going to tell you the ins And out. Of the dismays Going On. Of the diplomacy Going On. We are in discussions for save passage for americans, third country nationals And everybody trying to get to the airport. The taliban said it wont have reprisals And established an amnesty that the roads are open And people can move. We have heard all of the stories that have many journalists in afghanistan reporting about checkpoints And harassment And jammed traffic. We are trying to work through those issues as best we can. In spite of obstacles. Many, many afghans in all of the categories that you cited are finding their way to the airport. We will continue to do what we can through diplomacy. Its not just us. Its the international community as i said over 109 countries called on the taliban to do this. The taliban are hoping to create a government in afghanistan . They seek legitimacy. We are watching their actions. Their actions will speak to whether they will protect the basic Human Rights of the afghan people And their actions in these days will tell us whether there is reality to what their words say or whether there is not. SAndra you have been listening to the Deputy Secretary of Wendy Sherman. Her words will be picked apart. There was not a real update about how they will try to safely evacuate The Americans stuck in And around the kabul as the State Department just confirmed. They can no longer promise a Safe Exit to the airport there for The Americans who are strAnded. I am sure we will digest this with Dan Hoffman in a moment. Trace And the question what would you do to the taliban if they dont abide . There was no answer. Lets bring in Dan Hoffman. I am not sure if you heard that. I want to talk about the president saying on July 8th that the afghanistan government was unlikely to fall. There would be no saigon evacuation. The New York Times said the intel agencies predicted this back in july. Where is the disconnect And what do you make of this . Yes, i caught the Press Conference. I have a few comments. The intel picture. It was clear we knew that the taliban was mounting 120 attacks on the Afghan National Army. Their strategy was to target the border areas And then the capitals And make their way To Kabul. I have No Doubt that the president was briefed by good intelligence. We have excellent sources inside the Afghan National Army And inside the taliban as well. During the hearings what is really important, what we used to do with the cia, the president would say i am thinking about these 3 different options. Tell me what the intelligence speaks And how it would play out. If i remove all of my troops how long about the government of afghanistan last . Will that impact our ability to protect innocent afghans who worked with us And u. S. Officials in Harms Way . How would the Intelligence Community respond . I cant believe he didnt ask that question And they would not have provided that information if asked. SAndra for everybody trying to get to the airport. Rick former ambassador is tearing into what he just heard. Saying she failed over And over. The worst negotiator for the u. S. Her voice shaking reading a script. She read a list of meetings they have schedule And proud the u. N. Made a statement. A powerful message about the Women Of Afghanistan but where was there any detailed plan about what they are doing about this . Listen, diplomacy, those words sounded great but afghanistan is a War Zone right now. The taliban has checkpoints On The Road To Kabul And they are searching for individuals at interest to them. They are not a disciplined force. There is no effective And-And-control'>CommAnd And Control over them. Even in the Taliban Leadership was provided some safe travel, i am not sure the militants would abide by this. Talking about legitimacy from the international community. The taliban doesnt want that or need that. They want it from china, russia And pakistan. They dont care about Human Rights And womens rights. Not like the Deputy Secretary highlighted. SAndra those words not going over well. We know its a disaster. Do your job. Stop emoting about yourself. Mark talked to trace And said where is the Department Of Defense And the Secretary Of State And the president while this disaster is ongoing And these people are strAnded . Why are not there constant updates. At 3 oclock they will be holding a news conference. There are long times in between updates on the situation there. There is no higher priority than our citizens. They are in Harms Way. The situation is dynamic And fluid. Things can change quickly. Youre absolutely right. The american public is due an update. The president could make an even stronger statement to the taliban And get the word out if any of our citizens or allies are harmed, we will bomb them back to the Stone Age or whatever words he choose. The taliban is not a disciplined force. Some militants may not listen to. That we lack the everyone And the military to take action. Trace you talked about the dni. In april they said the taliban will make gains on the battlefield And the afghan government will struggle to hold them at bay. That was in april. In july a senior Administration Official said Intelligence Agencies never offered a clear prediction of an imminent taliban take over. That doesnt make. The Intelligence Committee doesnt do predictions of that sort with a timeline. They would have highlighted all of the weaknesses. We know that the Department Of Defense wanted to increase our Troop Members back up to 4500. At 2500 there was a risk that the taliban could mount successful attacks. Ghani is no longer a figure in afghanistan. That obviously leaves more questions than answers. Is the exiled president of afghanistan. He fled the country.
