We learned at least 11,000 American Citizens are stranded throughout the country trying to get now to the only sight under u. S. Control without transportation from the u. S. Military. We were cleareyed going in when we made this decision that it waS Possible that the taliban would end up in control of afghanistan. We were cleareyed about that. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan framed the fallout in afghanistan as inevitable outcome of concluding 20 years of war but said there were other forces that caused the chaos. We communicated with American Citizens for weeks telling them to get out of country. The Afghan Government and its supporters, including many of the people now seeking to leave, made a passionate case that we should not conduct a Mass Evacuation less we trigger a loss of confidence in the government. Evidently the least confident afghan president ghani who fled the country sunday. President biden has not since spoken with him. The administration is instead negotiating the Safe Exit Of Americans and possibly allies with the taliban. Now in possession of u. S. Military weapons. Given to the afghan National Security forces to be able to defend themselves at the specific request to president ghani, certainly a fair amount of it has fallen into the hands of the taliban and obviously we dont have a sense that they are going to readily hand it over to us. The White House is also managing regional impacts of the withdrawal. China exploiting the eventtoto sow doubt among the u. S. Allies. The president said Yesterday China and russia would have nothing more to have the u. S. To sink billions of dollars and stay there forever it seems to be that they are celebrating this they were celebrating u. S. Humiliation in afghanistan. Another ally the u. S. And we are going to continue to deliver on those words with actions. The White House says President Biden still has confidence in his national Security Teams but there will be an assessment about lessons learned. Officials are now negotiating with the taliban as you just heard to ensure a safe exit, a Safe Passage to the airport. One of those negotiators is a familiar foe to the united states and specifically, President Biden. Well, first, lets talk about the decision to withdrawal itself. We were spending about 1 of the Pentagon Budget every year to keep the Lid On in afghanistan. We hadnt lost a single american soldier in combat in the last year. It was working. It was working because we went there, we went there to prevent Al Qaeda from being back in full operational mode under the taliban and to sort of keep the Lid On. My guess is were going to end up spending way more trying to evacuate people with this slipshod operation. Its an embarrassment. Its a stain on our national reputation. Theyre up to 15,000 americans stranded out in the country who presumably have to beg the taliban to let them get to the airport, not to mention the interpreters who worked with us and other afghans who are in danger because they cooperated with us. All of this is the aftermath of the decision first to withdrawal and to withdrawal in a precipitous and incompetent way. Bret i want to get to that decision to withdrawal because obviously the Trump Administration was in the same place. But has this administration, the Biden Administration been forthcoming with briefings to congress about whats happening now . Were they forthcoming with briefings about their planning on what was going to happen . Yeah. Well, look, this is entirely predictable. I, for one, along with others, have been predicting its exactly what would happen. The only question was how quickly would it happen . And im, frankly, not surprised. That there is a total collapse. When we left, our European Allies left, remember, this was a nato mission. We werent there alone. Nato mission. When we left, our European Allies left. The president immediately said were leaving quickly. The afghan military knew at that point they were on their own. So we are back to where we were, bret, back to where we were prior to 2011. Take a listen. If afghanistan is unable to mount any real resistance to the taliban now, there is no chance that one year, one more year, five more years, or 20 more years of u. S. Military boots on the ground would have made any difference. Our true strategic competitors, china and russia, would love nothing more than the united states to continue to funnel billions of dollars in resources and attention into stabilizing afghanistan indefinitely. Bret how do you respond to that . Well, one thing we know for sure the terrorists around the world are cheering. They are cheering. The terrorists in syria, in iraq, in yemen, in africa. Theyre all watching the taliban Flag Fly over the capital in afghanistan. Over the president ial palace in kabul. The taliban has, in effect, in their eyes, defeated the united states of america. Its an utter embarrassment. Our allies wont trust us. This was an incredibly incompetent step. And im going to say previouS President s have wanted to leave afghanistan as well but, in The End they didnt because we knew we had the Lid On. We knew we had held alqaeda down. And thats the most we could have hoped for in afghanistan. Nobody thought we were going to create a Jeffersonian Western Style Democracy there. Bret yeah. But President Trump, definitely, in his term, wanted to get allamerican troops home. It wasnt clear how exactly his exit was going to happen other than they were trying to negotiate for something different than what we saw the other day. If you take a look at this map where you see the Taliban Movement over time, itS Pretty amazing what happened really in the past 96 hours for the Taliban Movement. And the New York Times is saying that the intel was being presented saying that it was clear evidence of a collapse of Afghan Forces after american officials decided to move out of the 2500. What was the Trump Administration, what would republicans have done differently if you were going to move those troops out . Well, first, as i said, i wouldnt have left. I think the policy we were pursuing was working. If you were going to leave, at least you have to have a Game Plan to try to rescue the people who are in dangered by these barbarians who are now in charge of this country. Bret do you have any constituents in there . That requires that requires a lot more planning. Look, these guys couldnt organize a twocar funeral. I cant imagine any there was no plan at all. And you could see it coming. They had plenty of time to at least plan an evacuation and had a chance to be successful. So far this evacuation has failed. We have heard from people in kentucky who have relatives over there who are very much concerned about whether they are going to get out. So, remember, there are up to 15,000 americans out in the Country Clamoring to get to the airport and their relatives all over america are quite concerned about their safety. Bret and i just want to ask you one thing on the process going forward on the other side, the big issue, which is the Infrastructure Bill and whats going to happen with Speaker Pelosi putting forward this big 3. 5 Trillion package as you see it, whats going to happen . Well, of course im hoping that 3. 5 to 5 Trillion Tax Increase is going to be defeated. That will be determined within the democratic party. Every single republican in the House And Senate is totally opposed to it. Just go back to february of 2020, we had the best economy in 50 years. And a big reason for that was the 2017 tax bill. They want to take that and rip it up and raise taxes on big businesses, small businesses, estates, hardworking people who make much less than 400,000 a year. I think that we need to look ahead and to see how we can influence and evolve the situation in directions which serve the interest of afghanistan, of the region and of the international community. I believe that there are three or four priority actions that we ought to be taking. First, of course, the evacuation of those who want to leave and the united states is now in control of Kabul Airport and is evacuating its own people and others. Pakistan is also helping in the evacuation, taking diplomats, international agency representatives, as well as journalists and anybody who wishes to leave we are issuing visas and letting them go out through pakistan. Secondly, we need to encourage an inclusive government in kabul and there, too i think the united states, pakistan, and other countries are working in N Doha as well as in islamabad we have dedication of number of nonpashtun ethnic representatives who have been meeting with our Foreign Minister and our leadership in order to get an engagement with them and the taliban in order to evolve a representative government. Bret mr. Representative, i hate to interrupt you, you know the taliban dont have a great history when it comes to human rights. In fact, itS Pretty heinous if you look back over the years. They are talking differently now than they talked before. But, if you look at what has happened, its tough to imagine that they are suddenly going to be entirely different, correct . I think we should verify their behavior they are giving assurances. We should see that we hold them to those assurances. And we should monitor the situation. And see how it evolves. But, at the same time, i think its welcome fact that theyre giving those assurances and they are giving those assurances because they know that the international community is watching. They want Recognition And Acceptance by the international community, and we should use that leverage in order to ensure good behavior on their part. Bret you know, pakistan, mrd off relationship with the taliban. Sometimes very on and you have had a number of years where provided financial support to the taliban. In 2018, mullah baradar, the new taliban leader was released from prison in pakistan. Why did that happen and has your relationship with the taliban changed since this takeover . Well, you know, mullah imprisoned by pakistan at a certain stage in the struggle and he was released at the request of the united states. Bret in that negotiation . Absolutely. In order to lead the negotiations iN Doha we were requested specifically to release him and thats what we did at the request of the united states. And he has led the negotiations sips then and you have seen the role that he haS Played since then. Bret there is a lot of worry, mr. Ambassador, about alqaeda come back and providing a real threat to not only us but to you. Are you worried about that . Yeah. Well, you know, alqaeda is basically was disseminated through cooperation between the united states and pakistan. We captured and killed over 600 alqaeda operatives in afghanistan and in the Border Region of pakistan. And since then, alqaeda is a shadow of itself and its not operational. The real threat comes from dies, dicethat the an organization the taliban have been fighting. There are other terrorists more dangerous tpp Attacks Pakistan has 6,000 fighters on afghan soil. Thats what we are worried about. We are worried about dice. We are worried about tpp. Alqaeda is a shadow and, of course, we should control it but the threat is much more multifailure than. When you say dash, we interpret isis. Isis. Usama Bin Laden was killed inside pakistan. Are you worried that the resurgence of the taliban is going to harm your relations with the u. S. In some way . We have given you 17 Billion since 2002 in foreign aid. Are you worried that thats going to dry up somehow . Well, you know, the aid has died up long time ago. And, in fact, in the struggle, in the war on terrorism, pakistan lost 70,000 lives. And lost about 150 Billion in economic damage to us i think we are looking forward to peace in afghanistan because this would be good for pakistan too if we have peace in afghanistan. As far as Pakistans Role is concerned with the united states, our relationship, i think we have important convergence of interest and principally the convergence is fight terrorism in the reasonable and no terrorism from afghanistan because it threatens the u. S. , threatenS Pakistan, threatens other countries in the region. So we have a common cause and we need to build an international coalition in order to ensure that there is no terrorism which emanates from afghanistan. Bret mr. Well, technically that doesnt work out so well if history is any judge. Not so much, bret. This White House has come across as fundamentally up serious throughout this entire crisis. And, you know, whatever your opinion about afghanistan, however you thought we should have left a small number of americans who think we should have stayed in some way, that is impossible to argue against at thiS Point even if this cleanup after clean up of trying to make the argument that they were prepared for this instance. Look, we can all see whats going on. We can all see the stories. We can read the stories of whats going on in afghanistan. Its obvious that this White House is woefully unprepared for what happened and that there are lives that are going to suffer and are potentially going to end because of it. That is unconscionable, its abhorrent and every american should be embarrassed by it and call this White House to account for its failure.
