Military aircraft are allowed to take off from the airport In Kabul, and the other scenes really playing out as a worse Case Scenario for the biden administration. You saw those images,sal ya zero a rah inside the president ial palace as the taliban poke to the world saying they were dethe Claireing Victory after months of Fighting Afghan Security Forces and this week and a half of a major offensive in the North And South of the country taking over areas of land and provincial capitals. There is just one provincial capital standing out just north of kabul. Other than that, the taliban has taken over the entirety the of afghanistan, and we do know ghaani left the Country Today over fears of his safety. Its anyones guess what comes after this, but the taliban within the coming hours certainly going to start implementing Sharia Law and their new vision for the people of afghanistan, vastly different from what people have seen over the past several years. Many worry it will be a very dark chapter for the afghan people. Reporter trey, i have one quick question, a followup on that runway. You have hundreds of Embassy Staffers there right now. It seems like a desperate situation. How long can those who mean us no Harm Hold on to that one airstrip . Reporter well, look, its a very difficult situation for American Forces because the top brass in the military have made very clear to the taliban in doha that where a lot of leadership has had ongoing conversations with the united states and others that if there were any attacks on these troops helping to evacuate american personnel and allies, there would be a very strong response by the u. S. Military, but now that you have the taliban operating throughout the city of kabul, it creates its very similar the what we saw back during the islamic state when the u. S. Led coalition was trying to liberate cities like mosul. You have fighters now within city limits, so its not just as simple as launching airstrikes. They would have to have tactical strikes against different areas around the cities, and we are hearing reports theres been gunfire but no major attacks on the airport yet. And, ben, underlying all of this really and all of the reporting that were seeing and everything that were seeing displayed for the world, also underneath it all is the question over Americas Credibility on the World Teenage teenage world stage. You know, i think unfortunately so much of the discussion around what was going the happen in afghanistan has been framed as just one of two options. Option a, were there forever. Option b, something like this. I think that there was a third option, one that i think President Trump certainly was considering which was essentially an exit that would have been an example of using our american military power, and the taking american material and Resources Pa paid for by with american taxpayers to be used. They certainly would not have wanted to see the flood of former Isis Fighters and the like fleeing away from bagram going scotfree, able to exact all sorts of punishment on us and our allies in the region. And i think of course this type of scene has to embolden americas enemies and particularly china in terms of their feeling about what this administration is willing to do. As soon as the taliban started to engage in this type of offensive, i think it was incumbent upon america to respond in force, to use targeted missiles and to go after the different areas and taliban camps we know exist to make clear we were not going to enable the taliban to run roughshod over Afghan Forces that have fought alongside us and that have been the source of enormous training and have been the target of enormous training and enormous resources over past 20 years. Instead this is really the worst of all options, and its going to lead to, i believe, a considerable encroachment on americas interests around the world, particularly as it relates to china. If i were in taiwan right now, i would not be feeling very confident about americas promises. Emily, it is 5 08 on Sunday Evening at Camp David where the president is in his vacation spot, and he has yet to speak to the american people. I think its just another step in a what has been, frankly, a letdown by our Commander In Chief both in his statements is and his messaging and his decisions, all of these are coupled together. So we know, for example, as we talk about our concerns for the future, among them the fate of all of these afghan translators that worked so closely with united states forces that we invested our resources in for so long who are now left stranded. But we have the opportunity for these last months to take care of them on such a stronger level. That visa system, as was mentioned earlier by trey, that is so slowly to be implementedded, going so slowly right now. We have had a stronger, faster reaction from the u. K. With their afghan translators than we have from the united states. That is at the very least such a shame. And so, unfortunately, im honestly not surprised at this point, at this weak, frankly, position exhibited by our Commander In Chief. But i hope as we discuss this dark chapter my concerns lay as well with the afghan people. Thats a country of about 38 million. We know that iran and pakistan host most of the refugees from that country. We know as we heard earlier in the intro the fear of Sharia Law being implemented. The speed of which those 34 provinces fell, seven minutes ago there were more than two and now only one is left to fall to the hands of the taliban, and i worry about all of Those Hundreds Of Thousands of individuals who worked with the afghan government, who worked Hand In hand with us who might at this point be facing a dire, if at all future. Right now we want to play a portion of what Secretary Of State Antony Blinken said this morning on cnn regarding the u. S. Exit Strategy. Take a listen.
