The adt numbers showed 330,000 positions were filed but a sharp decline from 680,000 in june and the lowest since february. Right now this is a big concern for the market. Budweiser beer being more expensive. Nestle ice cream, vodka, starbucks and chipotle. A lot of people say they have to pay more to keep talent. 1 3s of companies say wages went up this spring, which is soaking inflation. The inflation rising the fastest pace in 30 years in june a year ago. And the federal reserve saying this is all just temporary, transitory as they say. We heard that from Janel Yellen today. She said that she believes monthly inflation will come down by The End of the year. Yellen making those remarks while trying to sell the 3. 5 trillion climate and antipoverty package with another trillion dollar infrastructure deal. Neil, thats a lot of money that a lot of people say will increase prices even further if its passed. Neil yeah, thats what these companies are worried about. That it will necessitate and justify more spending. They might have that upsidedown. What do you think of that . The Financial Times says this presidency is vulnerable to inflation. With it, the global recovery. What did you make of that . Yeah, thats absolutely true. I read that story as well. This is a huge weakness for president biden. Republicans are relentlessly beating this drum and tying the inflation to the size of his stimulus package. You can also can see the biden administrations messaging on this has completely shifted. They have gone from saying that they dont expect inflation to accompany this massive package, its a blip, americaned had money in their pockets due to the vaccine. Now the Treasury Secretary saying the high prices could be with us through The End of the year. Youre seeing the biden administration reframe this argument related to their spending package. Now theyre saying its necessary to offset some of the high prices that american families are paying because they want to subsidize child care. They want to subsidize housing and the other social programs. If you look at the overall picture, it will save american families money. Republicans are unified in arguing about this big spending is what is causing this inflation and theres signs that americans could be buying that. There was a poll last week that said 59 of all voters blame bidens economic policy for inflation. That message is breaking through. Moderate democrats along with all lawmakers will be going back to their districts nor the August Recess and likely to get an earful from constituents and the rising Cost Of Living right now. They could come back even more reluctant to support that massive spending package. Neil sarah, we heard more from the consumer products companies. Kraft, clorox. Theres a point of resistance and were seeing it out of customers that wont keep paying the higher prices. Im wondering if that is reverberating on the administration or theyre not buying it. I think thats why youre seeing the biden Administration Talk about this in a different way. They are seeing polling that shows that more and more americans are concerned about this. Polling shows that americans are no longer Listing Coronavirus at their top concern. Theyre starting to have their ability to pay their bills, their ability to get a job and this is a real weakness nor the biden administration. If people stop being willing to pay the prices, if they stop viewing them as a temporary byproduct of a recovery that started more suddenly than people expected, that is a huge problem for the biden administration. And then in addition to everything that we talked about, they have a Credibility Problem because these same people that have been telling everybody not to expect inflation and to expect inflation to go away are then going to be trying to argue people out of caring about the fact that theyre paying higher prices from food to clothes. Theres ways companies can hide the increases. I always notice you get a bag of chip and theres not as many chips in the bag but the bag is the same price. They do things like that. What other things do they do . Right. Its called shrinkflation. They have the same packaging but less of the product. You also have companies that include these fees. Some companies will tack on fees. God knows what theyre for. For uber you may say here is a fee for who knows what. And pivot back to hostess. They talked about this innovation that they were doing. They would maybe have a specific package like a single serve Cup Case or doughnut. Maybe add in something extra. Although repackage it so it seems like youre getting more for the price but the Price Increases and you feel like youre getting more product. Theres different ways that these companies sort of hide the inflationary price increase. Lets be honest. If youre buying doughnuts, youre probably pricing you just want the dough nut. I was reading through the earnings report. I may be getting a twinkie in a second. Neil yeah. Real quickly. But i want your take on how severe this inflation is. Normally inflation remains an issue with people paying more for goods that they find attractive or delicious and it stops or slows when they stop doing that. Some companies indicated that they run into Resistive Consumerings that is enough. Not many but a few. Where do you see this going . I think were going to see the Inflation Head winds affect all products and all product categories. Mostly because, neil, theres also another factors like a lack of materials. So you think about what is going on with some of the computers and the electronics. You dont have the Mike Chips that are in short supply and demand. So i should say increase in demand but short supply. So when you have that, when products are being imported and you have a limited supply of things getting imported, that will have an effect. Before the pandemic happened the average Person Wasnt used to using zoom. Now its a routine part of our lives. Technology has made it easier and also what about those starting to feel stressed about 60 minutes, nineminute commutes that can be a bummer. Why would people want to go back to that . And also the parent aspect. Parents might want to be home with their children still especially if they are young. You combine all of that. Ill take a 5 Pay Cut. Not me, i need all the money. Come on.
