And he, of course, was cia director. General, are you worried that the taliban will be controlled soon . I dont know about soon, brian, but im very worried about the trends right now, the trajectory that this is all heading. The taliban has the momentum. In fact, our chairman of the Joint Chiefs Of Staff general Mark Milley quite forthrightly noted that the other day. They have the strategic momentum. It was heartening, i must say, to see that we did use some Air Power outside of kandahar, second largest city and second most important city in afghanistan to kabul. But i think that we need to work with the afghan government to develop a plan to help them stabilize the Security Situation which has, indeed, deteriorated very significantly since the announcement of the up tent to withdraw. And you will recall on your show previously, i mentioned that my fear was that we would come to regret this decision and it appears that that regret could come sooner now rather than later. And this is, again, very concerning. Brian you also point out that its in our best interest with china russia, iran, as well as pakistan in that area for us to have a presence for our national security. Beyond afghanistans welfare. Well, again, lets remember why we went to afghanistan in the first place and frankly, why we stayed. There were lots of other accomplishments but at The End of the day, what we did was we went because the taliban refused to expel alqaeda from the sanctuary it enjoyed under their rule of the bulk of afghanistan. The sanctuary in which the 9 11 attacks were planned and where the initial training of the attackers was conducted. We did eliminate that sanctuary. We had to eliminate the Taliban Regime to do it. And we have stayed first and foremost to ensure that alqaeda could not reestablish that sanctuary, something they have tied do repeatedly. And now, also, their conservatorship about the slack state which has an Affiliate Affiliate throughout in the pakistan region. Mission overlooked. That is afghanistan has also been a very important platform if you will for the conduct. Regional oabout that which was conducted in my final few months as the commander in afghanistan when Usama Bin Laden was brought It Justice by a raid conducted by our Special Operations Forces launched from afghanistan into abottabad, pakistan and recovered to afghanistan. So, that platform is also very, very important. There are plans to do all of this socalled over the horizon but our bases outside afghanistan are a very long way from afghanistan. They are in the gulf states. And for a drone to fly that whole distance could take seven or eight hours just to go to afghanistan and, of course, the same amount of time going back. So the drone time will be dramatically reduced and, of course, to put Aircraft Overhead you will have to have a real fleet of tankers to help them do that as well. The war will continue and indeed its going to get much worse. It already is worse. We are going to see ultimately, i fear, a very considerable Civil War between ethnic sectarian tribal elements. We will see the return of alqaeda. We will see millions of refugees flowing into other countries, particularly pakistan, and we will see ultimately the return of a Medieval Theocratic Ultra Conservative Islamist Regime the taliban controlling a good bit of the country.
