And his Crew Crew members were out of this world, briefly in space. More than 65 miles up in the air before returning to earth. It went smoothly And gotten rave reviews around the world including from fellow astronaut now Richard Branson thAt Tweeted welldone, Blue Origin. Impressive. Very best to all of the crew from me And all the team at virgin galactic. We had heard earlier from Elon Musk Yesterday wishing him luck but not today. The Bottom Line is thAt This is yet another billionaire that has placed a big bet on space, this time like branson trying to make himself a part of it. Mixed reviews on a message that he had coming out And talking to the press thanking amazon customers And workers. But thats what built his fortune. Well talk to a couple of very important people on this Subject Subject. 21 years in the making, neil. Jeff bezos blasted off for a historic And near Picture Perfect Journey to space. Really couldnt have asked for a better day And for things to go any smoother. They lifted off just behind us here a couple miles back from where we are stAnding At The Launch Pad here in Van Horn, texas. Sort of a collective sigh of relief And a big applause once we all realized who we were watching. ThAt The new shepherd had lifted off safely And headed to space. Reached speeds up to mach 3. They got to 66 miles above the west texas desert. The four passengers got the And-weightlessness'>View And Weightlessness thAt They only dreamed up. Bezos caught some skittles. The booster lAnded vertically where it will be used a again. The capsule carrying the four passengers parachuted to a safe And uneventful lAnding. Bezos was asked if his flight to space has changed his view of earth. Heres how we responded. As we move And the planet, were damaging it. So that is thats thats a very profound one thing to recognize that intellectually And another thing to see with your own eyes how fragile it is. Now, this flight not only historic being that you had Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the world launched himself to space but you have the youngest at 18 years old And the oldest, 82yearold wally funk. She was one of the original women thAt Trained to go to space. Wasnt allowed to because of basically her gender even though she outperformed most of the people she trained with. She finally got to go to space after waiting for six decades. Shes thrilled. Neil, likely more people going to space as Blue Origin announced theyll have two more missions by The End of the year. Back to you. Neil And expAnd out looking to bigger rockets down the road. Hes just warming up, isnt he . Sure sounds like it. Judging by his intensity after this flight, seems like hes addicted to space travel. So well see what he does. One other point, neil, that i thought i was interesting that great brilliant photographer we have out here, Scott King mentioned, he did all of this in his own back yard. He launched the rocket, then lAnded And he lAnded all on his own property. Pretty incredible that he could keep it to that Threemile Radius here for Blue Origins. Neil amazing. Jeff paul, thank you. Great coverage on that. This ended up not being the 11 minutes it was supposed to be but ten minutes, which boils down to 2. 8 million a minute. I almost got the impression looking at a young Oliver Damon walking off, that it was almost like a disappointment of a disney world ride. Hey, i want to go back again but its on. Another billionaire setting his sight on the stars. Jerry griffin welcomes this right now as this expAnds. You remember jerry well, the former Nasa Flight director. So many historic launches. Jerry, so good to have you. I was thinking of the difference now with billionaires And private enterprise And doing what nasa alone was doing a long time. And nasa we should keep in mind was a partnership with corporations. We shouldnt loose sight of that. Its a new Ball Game now. What do you think . Yeah, youre right. Its a new Ball Game. We have a lot of celebrations for today. What Blue Origin did in Van Horn was monumental. Rocket launch from the ground, up high, everybody came out just fine. Hardware works. Every time i see them lAnd that first stage booster, it just blows my mind. Three or four years ago, i would have said that is impossible. Am i eating crow. We also have three companies now that have stepped up And put their own blood in the And-skin'>Game And Skin in the game. Theyre making it happen. I think thats wonderful. I think were going to see an even greater advance now by the companies for at least two of them are going on to launch in to orbit not too far away from the cape. I think its exciting. We also have the 52nd anniversary of Apollo 11 to celebrate today. So i think its time to say welldone to all of them And look forward to whAt Theyre going to do next. Neil always a class act, jerry. I dont want to rain hahn anyones parade. But Elon Musk seemed to zing Jeff Bezos. He illustrated that, kidding around. But i raise that with Bezos Jed when i talked to the crew about the latest kind of ribbing from Elon Musk. I want you to react to this. Elon musk retweeted a meme of you making fun of you for touching the edge of space. He reminds folks that his rockets can orbit the earth at 17,000 miles per hour. Yours cant. Not quite whatever it is, 2,300 miles per hour. Is it just a little Competitive Jousting back And forth . What did you make of that . Well, its corrected what were doing And Blue Origin is doing with the Shepherd Vehicle is what Alan Shepherd did. Its a suborbital flight. Were building a vehicle to do that called new glenn after John Glenn to orbit the earth. This is a tourism mission. Its important because it lets us practice And let more people get in space. Neil Competitive Jousting. Bezos didnt take the bait. But what do make of that . Big egos And one getting bumped for another. Youre used to that. What do you think of this new wave coming . I think its normal. Well forget about it in the not too distant future. One thing to remind everybody that is very important. Inherently Theres Risk involved with space flight. So we can celebrate the day, celebrate what has been done by And-virgin'>Spacex And Virgin galactic. Its a tough business. While we ought to celebrate today, tomorrow they need all of them need to turn to And realize thAt This thing can bite you pretty quick. We learned that in a number of different ways. So i think theres neil youre right about that, jerry. I was reading that where there was a 1 Fatality Rate of those that ventured to space among american astronauts that seems very low. But its about 1 10,000 for those that fly on jets. We forget thAt This is still a risk. I wonder in the rush And the attention, its a dangerous operation, isnt it . It is. Dangerous is not i think its a my whole time at nasa was a Risk Versus Gain management problem. Managing the risk as low as you can, but you have to realize you cant manage it to zero. Thats what you have to keep in mind, keep Crew Safety in mind. Make every check you can, be diligent. You can celebrate today though. Neil youre right. Jerry, i want to thank you. Guys like you that kept the nation calm, kept astronauts And those working to back them up calm. I dont know how you did it but you did it And i want to thank you for that. Many americans do as well. Thank you, neil. Neil thank you. All right. Jerry griffin, the former Nasa Flight director. Talk about a high pressure job, that was And remains it. Before we take off here, talking about launching not necessarily to orbit, stocks reversed the big losses with the Dow Jones industrials almost making up the ground for the loss yesterday. By The Way, Amazon Stock that got clobbered yesterday, it came back. In case youre counting, netnet on the work, Jeff Bezos is out 2 billion. No wonder why he thanked customers, prime members And workers. More after this. Limu Emu Doug oh are you using liberty Mutuals Coverage Customizer tool . Sorry . Well, since you asked. It finds discounts And policy recommendations, so you only pay for what you need. Limu, youre an animal whos got the Bird Legs now . Only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Okay, thats because you all have xfinity mobile. Its wireless so good, it keeps one upping itself. Neil some official At The White House has tested positive for the coronavirus. We dont know who it is. What we do know is that individual was fully vaccinated. Martin meredith with the latest. Who do we know here . Good afternoon. Like you said what we dont know is who this person is. The White House not identifying the staffer, this is not the first time that someone that was fully vaccinated ended up testing positive. This appears to be related to the event thAt The Texas State lawmakers had here in d. C. Its believed to be the staffers that were At The event. In a statement, the White House says the medical unit has conducted contact tracing, interviews And no contact among principals And staff. The individual has mild symptoms. The White House did not announce this positive test after a reporter from axios broke the story. The biden administration says theyre transparent about the breakthrough infections. Theres hundreds of thousAnds of people in the federal government. We committed that if it was a commissioned officer, who were the highest level ranking people in the White House And in this building here, that we would make that information publicly available. We stAnd by that commitment. This latest Covid Case as the White House comes about the effectiveness of the campaign. 61-million'>161 Million people are fully vaccinated. Thats close to half the population. Weve seen a double Digit Increase in Covid Cases And more cities And counties are considering whether to reimpose the Covid Prevention protocols. The White House says they continue to follow the guidance And believes the cdc has the right Information Ant will continue to follow their guidelines. Neil . Mark, thank you. Lets go to dr. Bob lahida. He calms everyone down. Always a smile. I feel if i were to see you, youd say you can kindly afford to lose a few pounds. Doctor, greAt To see you again. How are you . GreAt To see you. Great. Neil you know, help me with this one. These reports of fully vaccinated individuals, let alone the official At The White House whose name we dont know, im hearing more of that kind of thing, doctor. Should i be worried . No, you shouldnt be worried. If youre vaccinated, we expect break through infections. Theres always the exception if somebody who has been vaccinated that gets very ill. The most part, most of the people that wind up in intensive Care Unit or wind up dying or being placed on ventilators, theyre not vaccinated. So vaccination, you may get infected And you may be able to transmit to the somebody else but you wont get very sick. Coldlike sometimes, flulike symptoms. Thats probably the norm. Neil its the risk of transmitting to other people that feeds this push on the part of some cities, Los Angeles County comes to mind that everybody wear a mask indoors whether they have been vaccinated or not. Then we get a report of the democratic representatives that Left Austin for washington And now a half a dozen of them that contracted the virus. What does that say to you now in this fight where we are . It says thAt This delta variant, which is highly transmissable, something like 250 times more transmissable than the alpha variant, which is the original variant, is now throughout the country. Its wreaking havoc. Its a pAndemic for the unvaccinated. That really concerns me. Were seeing this variant in florida, alabama, massachusetts, new york state, maine. So its in every corner of the country. We know that california is just locked down a bit with masks, et cetera. Everybody is understAndably concerned. Im understAndably concerned about this thing with the delta variant. Theres more variants to come. The virus is resilient And mutates At The drop of a hat. Neil all right. Mutating in some areas where theyre rethinking restrictions. In britain for the time being, doctor, even though they have seen the spike in cases, they dont want to Andates'>Reimpose MAndates And closures, masks. But it was enough for the cdc And other entities in the u. S. Government to put the united kingdom or a very high alert level. In other words, their advice, dont go there. You think that is justified . I think that is probably prudent. I think were going to be seeing this throughout the remainder of the year. My concern as well as everyone elses is in the fall And in the winter when we group together in our warm homes because things gets cold. In englAnd, thats the case as well. Very rainy, damp. Thats when this virus will take hold among the unvaccinated. So im not so concerned about the vaccinated people but i am concerned about all the people that have been very hesitant to get the vaccine. Neil you know, im not going to replay the bites from earlier today. It turned to a circus. But this pileon of dr. Fauci. I thought he was thinking in real time. Didnt have a hAndle on stuff. Following it as you were At The time. Do you think thAt This pileon is fair . No, i dont, neil. I dont think the pileon is fair. Because i know dr. Fauci is a very professional man. Hes been the director of the niaid for years And years. I used to work At The Nih Reviewing grants And i remember dr. Faucis guidance. Hes been around since moses parted the Red Sea And a very ethical, prudent individual. So i trust him. Neil i think he was providing medical advice for moses. Probably so. Neil bigger point, hes been villified to the point that you think he was lex luther. I dont know how productive that is, what might have been missed And the source of it. But to make him the target of attacks i think that a lot of it has to go back to his departure from the former president , Donald Trump At The time. But what is behind it, i dont see it being constructive. What about you . I agree with you. I remember Tony Fauci back when george h. W. Bush was president. I believe that was bush 41. He was a Point Of Light in the country. Remember bushs thousAnd Points Of Light . Tony was very, very prominent At ThAt Time And very good leader in the biomedical research community. Hes an excellent individual, an excellent doctor. I have known him as a physician for, gee, i guess its been about 40 years or more. So i think its unfortunate that we have to attack him individually who has an important role in our society. Neil all right. Odd to me. But ats core his a good man a good doctor. We all have to step back, take the chill down. Thank you, doctor. Always good seeing you. Mean time were going to give you an update on this Trump Chairman that was arrested on some foreign lobbying charges. We dont know the details. We know enough that it could accelerate. Well update you after this. Things were as sharp as i knew they once were. I heard about prevagen And then i started taking it about two years now. Started noticing things a little sharper, a little clearer. I feel like its kept me on my game. Im able to remember things. Id say give it a try. Prevagen. Healthier brain. Better life. Neil Tom Barrack, a former ally of president trump. He was arrested on federal charges today. Charged among other things with illegal foreign lobbying, making false statements. In a word, a mess. Lets get the latest from David Spunt At The justice department. David . This came down from the national Security Division here At The u. S. Department of justice. A little over an hour ago, 74yearold Tom Barrack was arrested at his home in Southern California this morning. Thats what were told by doj officials. Hes accused of illegally lobbying his longtime friend Donald Trump on behalf of the government of the united arab emirates. Authorities unsealed the indictment. Theres several allegations. They said they barrack wanted to influence trumps Foreign Policy to the uae. The indictment has seven counts. He charged with acting as a foreign agent. He failed to notified the Attorney General of his actions leading to the charges. Barrack And two others were arrested, matthew grimes of aspen, 27 years old And rasheed malik. A uae national. Attorney general Mark Lesko with the department of just tis put in a statement the Defendants Barrack served as the head of the trump inaugural committee. These charges dont appear to that. Nothing from the former president of the united states, Donald Trump. Barrack is also accused of lying to federal authorities from an interview that he did with those federal agents in 2019. While he was arrested in california, authorities in the Eastern District Of New York where you are right now in new York City, they want to have barrack extradited. That is the nexus of that case, neil. Neil got it. David spunt following that. Lets go to katie, the former federal prosecutor. All of this surrounds the uae And the Lobbying Work that he did on the countrys behalf. Where do you see this going . Well, the indictment is pretty clear that mr. Barrack had contacts with Government Officials in the uae And allegedly made false statements to the fbis about his contacts. This is just an indictment. The case has to be proven. Usually they have their ducks in a row And the investigation has been going on awhile. The fed takes awhile to wrap up the investigations. Theyre working behind the scene. In order for them to prove the case, they have to show that mr. Barrack was acting as an agent of the foreign government. In the indictment, you can see they have a lot of Email Traffic And things of that sort. The government, the prosecution has to still prove beyond a reasonable doubt that hes infact violated the statutes. Remains to be seen here. Neil where is the line of arguing on behalf And helping the foreign Country Or Lobbying for that country or going to outright illegal action . Sure. It kind of a suggestive determination as to Somebody Acting as an agent of a foreign government. Have to show certain favors are being done on behalf of the foreign government during a political activity. You can see theres certain emails that he send to officials of the government that seems to suggest that he was working on their behalf toward the Trump Campaign And trying to further their positions. Again, its a Subjective determination. You have to as a Prosecutor Go in there And show that he wasnt just a Business Man trying to make connections on his own but he was working on behalf of this government in an activity that would require registration like a political activity. An indictment is the first step to that. But it has to be proven that he was doing this on behalf of the uae, not just for his own personal interests but to advance their interests. Neil you know, you always wonder whether timing And sort of things are co incidents. We recently saw the uae open to Oil Production And work with opec And i wouldnt call it increasing normalization efforts. We have normalized ties with the uae. I wonder if this is odd timing. You wonder. You have to worry about the political motivations. You have Hunter Biden And certain connections there. That didnt necessarily result in an indictment. So yes, of course, theres a lot of motivations behind these decisions. At the same time, the elements of the crime are something thAt The prosecutors looked at, they have gathered their evidence And moved forward with the indictment And now assuming it moves to trial, they will have to prove that. Always different motivations because the prosecutors decision. Its not so open And shut as one might think. Neil got it. Thanks, katie. Former federal prosecutor. Meantime, remember when it was looking like this bipartisan effort on infrastructure only, i wouldnt say it was a Slam Dunk, but it was looking like a dunk than it had been . We might have to reverse that right now. A Keep Player in that, Senator Jerry Moran of kansas on why it might not be quite a Slam Dunk or adunk or even possible after this. Neil all right. Democrats are in a big hurry to get the Infrastructure Measures through. A little more nan a trillion infrastructureonly measure that has bipartisan support. I say that about a trillion, but half of that is repurposed covid funds. Its not as expensive. The big one is the 3. 5 trillion human Infrastructure Plan that republicans are dead set against. Having said that, Chuck Schumer wants to get going on this beginning tomorrow. Mitt romney said can we at least look at markup And that kind of stuff till next monday . Senator Jerry Moran joins us. Senator, The Way this is going, im wondering if this the Infrastructure Plan that you supported or the broad aspects of it, whether that is doable now. What do you think . Neil, it remains to be seen. Heres another week of you And i visiting And its more what might has happened as compared to what has happened. Were a deal is doable, but i dont know what motivates Chuck Schumer to set this arbitrary deadline of tomorrow for us to have a vote on a motion to proceed. Were close to a deal, but how its paid for is hugely important. That is always the difficulty in getting support for infrastructure. We were successful. We led an effort to get the tax collections, the additional irs agents out of the bill. We announced thAt That was accomplished, something that could bring more republicans to the table. Something that i wanted to see for me to be supportive of this plan. The reality is, theres not a plan for how it will be paid for. Thats the debate now. Schumer has said tomorrow. I wont proceed to a bill that we dont have legislative text for. Until we have legislative texas, cant be a cbo score. We need to see words open paper. We need an agreement. Were not there yet. I would get the group of 11 republicans And 11 democrats will continue to negotiate but i dont know what Chuck Schumers response would be. He may say you had your chance And it didnt happen. I predict that 50 republicans vote no on to proceed. Its not being done The Way it needs to be done. No certainly. Neil glad you clarified it. This is not a Yay Or Nay vote. Its the debate. Another wrinkle that came up is the Role Nancy Pelosi might play in the house. Shes said the senate can propose, but whatever is being debated should be in conjunction with the 3. 5 trillion spending measure. That seems like i would assume a nonstarter. So are both nonstarters . President biden received a lot of push back from republicans that negotiated they thought a deal with the White House when they said they thought they would be tied together. Thats a problem. The president tried to walk that back long before that or weeks before that, Speaker Pelosi said something similar, she wouldnt allow the bipartisan bill to pass the house unless the senate passes the tax And spend bill. That has had me troubled from the beginning. One of the reasons im involved in this effort is to reduce the likelihood that we spent all of that money in that second bill, the tax And spend Democrat Bill by getting this done. Maybe it relieves some of the pressure On Manchin And other democratic senators to vote for something that only requires 51 votes And spends trillions. So the fact thAt They tie them together is very problematic to a senator like me. I think that cbo score, i highlight it, the cbo is important. I want to make sure that its paid for, its not just a gimmick. In todays inflationary federal spending is sky rocketing. In todays spending, inflation world, we dont need to be priming the economy with a infrastructure bill. We need infrastructure but its not about stimulating the economy. The demAnd is there And the prices are going up. While theres a couple of proposals for a pay for, one of the things that we shouldnt take off the table is this bill doesnt you talked about it, this bill is paid for in part by using unspent Covid Relief packages. What it doesnt do is include the american Recovery Act in january, the 1. 9 trillion. The unspent money is off limits for that. If were looking for a pay for, i couldnt think of a better one. And a third of that is yet to be spent. Thanks, senator. Jerry moran of kansas. I was thinking of you, my friend, because this all of her day in And this kid from the netherlAnds, 18 years old. You know, if he ever gets up to the moon, he could be a threAt To that record. Are you worried . Well, im 85 right now And im still the youngest man to walk on the moon. [laughs] neil great memories, charlie. What did you think of this mission . It was brief. They technically get to be called astronauts. I dont know whAt The formal pattern is. But they are seen as astronauts. And they want a lot more like them.
