A back and forth on whats really space. I think when youre up there and see the black contrasted with the blue of earth youre in space. Once you are there for 2 or 3 minutes it is a big achievement. He is a firefighters here in Westchester County outside of new York City and runs a financial firm as well but brothers going to space and an 18yearold Oliver damon, a dutch teenager and i love her to death. Wally funk, 82yearold aviation pioneer. If anybody is more pumped i dont know. She has been waiting 60 years for this moment. She should have flown back in the 60s as well. I have to say dont you find it interesting for all this progressive talk the Billionaires Shouldnt exist, they have to pay their fair share of taxes, america seems fixated on the super wealthy and bezos is a great example of the evolution of the rich guy. Not only do you have to have deep pockets like the rockefellers but howard Hughes Action Adventurer but make no mistake Jeff Bezos is an entrepreneur and businessman. A great Marketing Campaign for his Space Tourism Service where he will charge 200,000 initially. Its why billionaires should exist. They can afford it when government cant. Bill bezos said people ask me if im nervous. Im not nervous, im curious. I want to know what were going to learn. And Elon Musk is like that, too. He has launched ships. Every time he said the data we collect from each failure helps us to get one step closer to success. Sandra such a great point. Neil, a lot of the criticism some criticism has been heaped on him to focus more energy here at home. So many problems to fix. Why be working on space in this moment . He said we need to do both. We need to also be looking off into the future. Yeah, i always wonder when i hear that back and forth like an either or proposition. I like the line john f. Kennedy used to get us to the moon before the decade was out. We werent doing that very well at the time j. F. K. Made the ro,. He said we do it because it is there. The challenge is there. It is in our nature as a species to pursue these things. All together for all of us. And i think that summed up where we stand today 60 plus years later that this is in our human d. N. A. To do something like this and to realize for the chosen few. If you think about it, guys, about 500 have gone into space right now and this is all about the goal is to democratize it so thousands more can get the chance to appreciate the essence of this System And Space itself. Blue origin uses a Rocket And Space Capsule what were more akin to seeing but not fully automated with four humans On Board. It can hold six. One of the selling points for this type of mission was Space Tourism is literally the windows in the Capsule. 3 1 2 feet by 2. 3 feet is described, which is significant because its six times larger than those on a boeing 787 dreamliner. The point being once you hit that moment in space 60 miles above earth, 62 miles above earth, your vista on space will be right in front of you. Funny you mention the 787. It was such a big deal when the 787 first came out because the windows were so much bigger. Enthusiasts to stare at the world below them. In this Instance Theyll see the world below them and interesting to note july 20th, 1969 was the first time that man took off to head for the moon, the first walk on the moon done here in the united states. Were the pioneers of space. That Space Race that neil mentioned. Neil brings up a very good point. We dont do these things because they are easy. We definitely do them because theyre hard. It must be frustrating at times to watch these rockets take off and fail but from failure comes success. We didnt get the Light Bulb from edison the first time he made it. It was 10,000 tries before he finally got it right. This will be it. Space tourism is where its at. Susan mentioned 200,000 initially for the tickets. The prices will come down. Certainly when the Wright Brothers were pushing that plane they werent thinking about the 747 crossing the atlanta for a few hundred dollars from one continent to the next. Bill inventors over time have delivered certain contributions, shall we say. I would say he is not oroville or wilbur and not Henry Ford but he has supplied the financial support you need in order to get to this point today. Sandra and inspiration for the innovation. Theyll be taking off shortly from van horn, texas. Jeff paul is on the ground there. What is it like around all this activity . Compared to the last launch we were at for Virgin Galactic the nerves are higher because it comes down to the one moment. Virgin galactic you had the gradual buildup to the moment and took off like a plane. This is like a Space Shuttle launch. You wait for engines to fire up and Blast Off. I would say the nerves are a little higher for the people watching and certainly they have to be high for the people who are inside that very Capsule going up there. Jeff bezos was here yesterday and dropped off some food and sounded upbeat and excited and walked off and got ready for this mission. Were 3 1 2 minutes away from this happening. It was supposed to happen at the top of the hour, a bit of a hold which Blue Origin tells us its typical. For Virgin Galactic we were delayed two hours. 10 or 15 minutes typical when it comes to something like this as neil said, this company was founded in the year 2000. 21 years of work coming down to this one historic moment for Jeff Bezos an his company. The first time they are sending people to space with the Technology Theyve developed. A very historic moment not only for the company but also for the future of Space Tourism. Bill thank you, jeff. One thing that strikes me every time we watch these technology gets better in terms of taking the viewer there, whether its Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson in the Tech Field they tried to take it into the year 2021 literally. And im always impressed by the Camera Angles and the Production Value that we have advanced towards. Nasa has done a degree of it but this is new Age Stuff quite literally. So the viewer at home knows, the Capsule on the type will Blast Off with the rocket in a matter of two minutes and counting now unless we go to another hold. Well Stand By for that. A minute left to launch. Well be quiet and see what we can pick up from the pilots. The rocket goes 250,000 feet and separates. The rocket will land on its legs two miles from the Launch Pad is the plan. The Capsule will continue for another 100,000 feet up in the air the point where they reach what Jeff Bezos calls zero gravity and be there for about four minutes. Sandra this is about to half. Were a minute and a half away. Neil, your thoughts as you were able to talk to the four people On Board just yesterday. You know, its 21 years in the making you think about it. This was the company that decided to commit to this reusable boosters. It started with Jeff Bezos here long before that 18yearold came on the scene or was even a flash in his parents eyes. It is amazing were at this point. Some shrug their shoulders say another rich guy and private effort in space. We have to look back how amazing this has become. That private enterprise can make this happen and build on the heroic efforts of nasa and so many pioneers before. That to me is what makes this such a stellar event. Bill thank you, neil. Only in this country can a Kid Dream about this day at age 57 not only be the worlds richest man at 200 Billion Net Worth but remake The Way you order a package thats delivered to your house, and at the same time some 21 years ago start this company, given very little Press And Attention and very little Media Access and then one day you spring this idea on the world and we watch it together. Man, that was cool. Sandra chilling. You and i were keeping track of the distance at which that went up, at the pace it went up. It was chilling. You just heard Jeff Bezos On Board say you have a very happy crew up here, I Want You to know. Just listen. Copy, everyone, go ahead and remain in your seats and remember theyre on their way. Shortly youll hear the Capsule offgassing. Wow, wow, wow, wow. [broken audio] my main mission was accomplished. I was floating for about five minutes. Yeah. Your feet was bill that was incredible. It was inbelievable. Wally, it was incredible. I was surprised at how easy zerog was. It felt like it it was weird. Actually feels good. It felt Bill I mean, what do you say . What do you say . Sandra im speechless. There is an 18yearold in there. Now the youngest person to ever go to space, an 82yearold Aviator Woman Wally Funk now the oldest to go to space. Bezos and his brother On Board. All i hear is elation. Bill a couple of things we could hear bezos said. He said my main mission was accomplished. I didnt pick up what he said after that. Then later he said i was surprised how easy zerog was meaning that 3 to 4 Minute Period in space. Sandra i dont know if they had three minutes. Expected three minutes. Bill this is so great. There will be video that will play out this morning that was recorded inside the Capsule. Well see that and the reaction On Board. You remember branson from nine days ago the woman with the blond hair that had it tied back in a scrunchy that Got All over the screen as branson was delivering what i would consider his Neil Armstrong Moment describinging what it was like to be in zerog himself. We saw the booster come down. To see it hit its target. So you can reuse that booster. It makes Space Travel cheaper and between musk and now bezos, this is the future. It is here and we just watched it. Sandra they just traveled 62 miles above the earth and are now showing that commercial Space Travel is possible. And i dont know about you, bill, i know everyone ive spoken to is ready to line up to do this. It is expensive now. The goal would be to make it cheaper. But what an amazing. I cant wait to hear what Jeff Bezos said about the view. He had heard so much about how the earth looks from there and how fragile it does look. I believe that is him in the window there. Earlier we saw the teenager. Bill he and his brother look a lot alike separated by four years. Younger Brother Mark is 53, jeff is 57 as we mentioned a moment ago. Well get some Video Playout here. As soon as we get audio near the Capsule well bring it to you as well. The thing that was so stunning. We were sitting here and there was a drone shot here that captured the liftoff from ill guess it was 1,000 feet, maybe 2,000. I could not tell exactly. But to see that moment where that camera follows that rocket as it left earth. You said my stomach just dropped and i said my gosh, look at that. Sandra it really was something. I believe it was seven minutes 28 seconds start to finish. Expected to be 11 minutes. Thats quicker than sandra now well see them emerge. Quicker than they originally said. They were back down safely before 10 minutes. Which is fantastic. Sandra thumbsup. When you watch that Rocket Land it was almost as though someone painted a target for it to land on when it returned. Sandra neil, how are you taking all this in . Quite a few moments here. Im thinking of oliver damon. I have a teenager about his age and im sure he is thinking thats it . The ride is over . [laughter] like a Disney world ride, right . He is thinking all right, i want to go again, i want to go again. Bill you think about how many days weve been reporting on a daily basis on a steady drumbeat of one could argue hasnt been all positive news ill put it that way, neil. But to see this together, man, it is magical. It really is. You are tempted to hype this beyond what it is but it is Worth Hyping beyond what it is. If you think about it and the fact this is new shepard named after Alan Shepard for his flight in 1961. That was 15 minutes. And this was 10 minutes. If you pay the freight it is about 2. 8 million a minute not that anyone is counting. But it is remarkable and how pinpoint it was. A testament to really the billions put into this at a time i think we were mentioning this before when Eve Everyone said musings. Sandra how fun is this. Wally finally got to go to space. Sandra there she is. Bill jeanette, you have been in space three times. Reflect on what were watching here. Pretty remarkable. I remember my first Space Flight and thinking wow, its amazing. To fulfill your Childhood Dream and get to see things that very few people have ever gotten to see and then you kind of have this you beat the odds and survived all that Crazy Ride and decent from the atmosphere and come back. Bill lets watch now and see if we can pick up some reaction in there. [several people talking] Bill Bear with us here. Well try to bring our viewers any sort of reaction as it comes in here. Sandra jeanette, this is just a remarkable moment for the average person to take in to now see that these four people On Board did not have to do anything. This is an example of what Space Tourism would look like to be able to climb On Board, go 62 miles above the earth and skyrocket into space. Why do you believe Space Tourism is so important . Obviously this is a groundbreaking moment for that. It is. If we go back in history and you are thinking about the first explorers and there are very few initial explorers that did this. Only the bravest people would venture out from ports and sail off to The End of the earth and they could find every continent. Initial phase where now people are venturing out. Instead of just professional sailors now you have passengers on boats going to the new world and now were essentially at that new World Point where were taking people that arent really trained professionals and allowing them a sense of what it is like to see space and see the earth from space. It is just the beginning. Bill i walked in the studio 45 minutes ago and one of the crew members said man, it looks like a waste of money to me. I just go ahead and defend the expense and the cost and try and balance that off what were taking away from it in terms of learning. Exactly. So thinking back what i just mentioned, the 1400s and 1500s it was an enormous amount of money for the ships but the benefits of those things realize at some point in history it was paid back. What we believe those of us in the Space Industry now, commercial Space Industry see this as the very, very beginning, right . This is sub orbital flight. Next well have more access to orbital flight and take people around the planet and well have eventually Space Stations where people can go and actually visit a Space Station and stay a week or so and spend your vacation on a Space Station in orbit. While people are vacationing there other people will take advantage of Microgravity And 3d products that you can build there or develop pharmaceuticals that you can only develop in microgravity and all the while nasa is still exploring space and going to the moon and mars so we can make ourselves a oneplanet species and we can inhabit other planets. The nature of humans to keep exploring, getting out there and learning more ways to do new things that we havent even envisioned yet. Sandra if you could Stand By with us. A bit of a celebration. Neil, you had a chance to talk to this crew yesterday. You can see Jeff Bezos. He has the Cowboy Hat on there. They just emerged a few moments ago. Wally was in celebration. Bezos Brother Mark and the crew members. I saw champagne popped. You did. It is funny, too, with this. We forget there was no really aggressive physical training for this flight. A lot of citizen would be astronauts who had to consider and weigh the training that goes into becoming an astronaut and going into space. What i found most intriguing here the biggest thing they had to worry about is getting fitted with their uniforms. If you have any interest in going to space but not necessarily a World Class Athlete like yourself, sandra, there is hope for guys like me. [laughter] i found that to be reassuring. The only thing they have to look at in the future is getting an elevator up to the rocket. That was four or five, six flights of stairs. I joke to make the point here that this is part of the democratizing process, you dont have to go through the rigors. It could cut both ways. That stood out. The message that bezos is sending like Richard Branson 11 days ago is that this makes it accessible to more people. Fighter Pilot Training days are gone. Advanced engineering degrees from m. I. T. Arent necessary. This is open to more folks. Right now im sure those orders are going to be keep coming in. We already know that better than 7600 have bid on getting a shot at one of those seats. Im sure that has gone up exponentially just in the course of this flight. Sandra you think about the technology, though. If there is increased demand, which is expected for Space Travel, for everyday people, you are going to need and amazing amount of people to build this technology. Theyll have to build more of them. Equally impressive, bill, when you and i were watching this as the takeoff was the incredibly soft landing. You and i both had a wow moment. Bill you think about u. S. Astronauts and russian cosmonauts when they land in kazakhstan. Watching that Capsule Hit Earth is like so sudden and they get theyve been in space for sometimes weeks, months perhaps, sometimes more than a year and they are weightless and need to find their gravity back again. Granted this was a Fourminute Flight in terms of zero gravity but nonetheless, they did it. They came back and landed like a pillow for crying out loud. There was a fourth person who won an auction. He or she hasnt been identified. 30 Million to win a seat On Board. I dont know what explains that. What a sucker he or she is to miss the moment. At some point well get an explanation and what opened the door for the 18yearold to be On Board. You had today the oldest person in World History at age 82 to go to space. At the same time the youngest person, an 18yearold Teenager went as well. Sandra wally the 83yearold Female can go home and say what did you do today . Jeff paul is on the ground there. They basically landed in the middle of the desert. Jeff paul is on the ground. What was the reaction to this incredible mission . 21 years in the making. It all goes off exactly as planned especially a mission that had people On Board for the very first time. I can tell you when it took off everyone was holding their breath and you saw the smoke billow up from that rocket and as it shot into the Air Everyone out near no matter who you were tried to get the best view you could if you wanted the rocket to shoot straight up in the sky. You could see the stream from the boosters and after a little while you lost the view. The other moment that everyone was holding their breath was the Booster And Crew was landing. We were looking in the sky to see the booster. That is what makes this very unique. It is reusable, the booster. Were looking around and it is almost directly from where it launched you see the booster come down and as it touches down you hear a big sonic blue. Blue origin folks said we would hear. It was incredibly loud. You had the moment where the crew finally landed. We could see that from here as well. The moment the parachute came out, i dont know if you could tell watching it from your angle but the parallel angle we are from it, it was cruising down pretty fast and immediately when the parachutes went out it just about stopped in the sky. A smooth landing for that crew and a big part of the reason those three parachutes. Something that simple brought them all to safety. Bill thank you, jeff. Want to bring in terry, international Space Station Commander And Space shuttle pilot. Im here and good to be with you guys. Bill im not sure where you are. Share maybe your initial reaction to what we just watched and where were going next. Im in houston. It was a really cool mission. I want to congratulate the former Blue Origin team. My former Space Shuttle Teammate was one of their team managers. What a cool day. How easy they got out of the Capsule and walking around and everything. After my first flight i was really dizzy. It was a few weeks, not just a few minutes. They all look like theyre in good shape. Bill wow. Thats the shot, smitty. You see that . It looks like it is out of star wars. Sandra it took our breath away. Terry, great to have you here. It was incredible for us to all watch and, you know, looking back the Wally Funk talking to Neil Cavuto Yesterday before she took off on this and she said well show the world what can be done in space. How far does this go in advancing Space Travel and tourism for the average person . Still expensive expected to come down in price. A lot less expensive than a orbital money. It is a lot of money. Lots more people are going to fly in space which i think is really good and thats going to make a difference. If people who are Company Owners fly in Space Theyll get a different perspective. Bill spacex, Elon Musks company. Theyre building a huge Launch Tower on the texas East Coast to send their Star Ship into orbit. That is a rocket with more power than we watched today. How does it fight into the current trajectory for where this goes next . That is. Spacex won a competition to build the moon landers. So nasa will pay them money to build the rocket that will take humans back to the moon in the not too distant future. Blue origin and another company also had a wanted to win that contract and a little dispute. Spacex has a big role in human Space Flight. When i was in space they brought up two cargo ships, much appreciated. The third one blew up. The first two made it so that was good. Spacex and Blue Origin are in a competition. Thats a good thing. Competition is what we want as americans. Bill Richard Branson did it quite different nine days ago. He went from truth or consequences, New Mexico. It is easy to understand why you go to houston, texas. Nasa is there. Why did they choose van horn, texas, Far Western Edge of the state, population 2,000 . Actually, you know, West Texas and New Mexico are right next to each other. The part of the country where there arent a lot of people. If rockets crash it wont land on anybody or if they go supersonic, the boom doesnt bother anybody. Its a good place if you want the take off and land from space. These rockets are not going into orbit. If they were going into orbit they would falling back to earth a few hundred miles to the east. Now theyre going straight up and down. West texas, new Mexico And Arizona is a great place to do sub orbital Space Flight. You are part of the space family. More folks Got Added and hundreds more in the next few years. Lets go around the horn as we watch the recap here and bret since are you in studio, lets start with you. What an amazing thing to have witnessed. We basically saw the beginning of what will be commercial tourism in space. The Rocket Launch was so flawless it almost looks like a Computer Graphic generated launch they wanted to use as an example. The being weightless for a few minutes. I had the chance to be weightless once on a flight, a very exciting feeling. I briefly thought i heard bezos said it was similar to swimming when you were weightless and just the view. To be so far up where you no longer see county lines and State Borders and borders between countries, you just see the earth as one Big Blue Marble in the vastness of space and here we all are. Earth had everybody here except for four people looking back at all of us. Bill Blue Origin takes the name because bezos saw the blue planet as being so significant in our Solar System and this is the original. The only one with water habital water. Bill when you find that water you bring it back. Sandra nasa has sent out a tweet congratulations to the Blue Origin team. We look forward to future flights with researchers and nasa supported technology and payloads aboard. Right now i cant wait to hear from bezos himself. His description of what It Felt like and what he experienced, what he was able to see. He was looking forward to the zerog and the view. Whats interesting, you and bill were touching on this. They didnt reinvent the wheel but they finesseed it. The Shock Absorbers in the seat. Nasa hadnt addressed it and the russians didnt. It is a bumpy hit when you get to the ground. Its coming like a crash almost. We get used to it. Then someone with a sense of aesthetics says there is a better way of doing this. Bezos and the large windows. The largest window for a spacecraft ever to appreciate the view. Into style and aesthetics you get that. Cameras everyone, inside, outside to monitor it from the beginning to The End. Even with Elon Musk himself down to the interior of his rockets like the inside of a Tesla Car down to the Look And Sleekness of the uniforms. Like Steve Jobs with the Sony Camcorders and audio devices. He wanted to bring them to the next level and came up with the ipod as a way of streamlining that and making it more elegant. Billionaires get elegance. They have the money to poor into that. I think Alan Shepard the first one to be in space, 5 minutes longer than this one. They werent big on aesthetics. Get him up there and back and prove to the soviets we can do that. Schedule another mission in the first orbital american flight. Now that weve had so many of our flights under the belts thanks to nasa these guys said i can make it cooler and make it look and feel nicer. There is something to be said of that. The late great Steve Jobs didnt reinvent the Audio And Video devices, he just made them cooler. Bill thats a great way of explaining it. Almost like a user experience. You want to make it better for your customer. When you talk about the finesse of Blue Origin. The next one is as early as september. By The End of this year if theyre on track this will happen and it will likely not make a headline in the news. I think youre right. Keep in mind on the same track we have another one, the new glenn thats named after John Glenn the first u. S. Astronaut to orbit the earth. It will be able to orbit the earth and go to the moon. A tussle back and forth that he and the government have had of awarding some of these contracts to musk, it will almost be like a Modernday Apollo to handle large groups of astronauts and shuttle them back and forth into space. The international Space Station. So he is working on a couple of different things at the same time. Clear he was in no rush to be first. When we got news to Richard Branson wanted to get to space sooner a lot of people we can move, were ready. No he said were not ready. Why he had 15 unmanned test flights to get it right and it reminds me The Way he set up amazon people were we have to make money. He kept pulling the money back into the infrastructure, building warehouses and went public for years in 1995 and after they said we have to get Wall Street seeing were making money. Well make money once we have the system in place. It is in place. No one will second guess him what happened to amazon, it fed this. He did things his way. Sandra such a great point and he said to you yesterday you have to start somewhere and you have to work hard on getting it to be more efficient, more practical and less expensive. Headlines billionaire Space Race but not the only game in town. Hundreds of space startups across the country focused on satellite technology. Orbiting hotels. They say it is 8 Billion currently and could grow to 1. 4 trillion by The End of this decade. Coming from the Business Side during this flight i checked Amazon Stock to see how it reacted when his founder going up to zerog. He could only do it handing over the daytoday reins, there was less risk for amazon shareholders for him to get On Board this Human Flight for Blue Origin. Sandra just remarkable. Bill i want to emphasize this because i think a year from now, five years from now well look back at this moment and think it was old school. Sandra i heard you say that. Hard to think its possible. Bill because the billionaires will finesse it in The Way. You think about your original ipod. I have my actually and loaded with great tunes. It works if you charge it long enough but you look back on it now and look at the iphone 11, 12, 13 that you have in your pocket and it looks like it is so past its due date. I think this will have a similar feel over time. One comment that Susan Lee made. You think about the Company Amazon and neil touched on it, too. That Market Cap for amazon doubled During Covid. The reason that happened in Part Everybody was staying home and they were ordering from their living rooms and apartments all over america and there wasnt much of an effort that had to go into it because you could do it on your phone or desktop. But it also introduced a lot of people would argue, a different generation of americans to the amazon experience. Think about this for a moment. Your local Grocery Store now. The Click And Pay at kroger. That never happened before. All that change right now with the innovation During Covid. As a result Amazon Stock price doubled During Covid and Jeff Bezos for all the headlines several years ago when he announced his divorce and split it 50 50, both California Residents and thought he went from 120 Billion to 60 billion. Today he is worth 200 Billion and the innovation that he put into the company. The 60 Minutes Story that aired three or four years ago but they did the Amazon Drone Story. Bezos next vision. When Elon Musk can prove that he can launch a Rocket And Land it on a ship in the Pacific Ocean people go man, this guy is for real. Then the perception of the Tesla Car changes almost immediately, i believe, and the Stock Price for different reasons shot through the roof. The way we look at bezos from This Day Forward has now changed forever. Sandra he is a brilliant man. Why does the technology from Blue Origin go . You know, its a little bit of a head scratcher. I was wondering the same thing. It seems like whenever you have a circumstantial case. This is one. You are asking the jury to connect the dots. Here the dots are few but they are strong. There is video of her getting in the car. Her Dna And Blood in the car. Cell phone is in the car. Her body is found in an area where nathaniel was familiar. The only thing the jury doesnt have is, well, who was behind the wheel . If the defense is presenting any sort of defense, my guess is they are going to say maybe it wasnt him who was driving.
