[explosion] Charles Watson is live in surfside with how officials think this will help the search for survivors. Good morning, charles. Reporter good morning, ashley and carley. What remains of champlain towers south is now gone as the outer bands of tropical Storm Elsa approaches South Florida. Demolition crews imploded the remnants of the 13story tower just after 10 30 Sunday Night and it all happened in a matter of seconds. You see the explosives a the base of the building go off and then it comes crashing to the ground as a plume of Dust And Debris fills the air. It was so thick out here, i could see it from my hotel six blocks away. This was important to officials who were racing to bring that remaining section of the building down before any impact of tropical Storm Elsa could be felt. Theres an area of that mound which we were not able to work in safely and this demolition is going to open up wide the whole area and were going to be able to pour resources onto that pile and we are going to attack it bigtime and we are going to try to pull those victims out and reunite them with their families. Reporter about two hours after the dust settled our cameras caught Search And Rescue teams headed back to the Collapse Site so they could get back to work, looking for 121 people who are still unaccounted for and as questions continue to swirl about what caused the initial building collapse, the town Of Surfside is pushing back at the notion that town officials are somehow responsible for delays of the building, saying there was no Indication Emergency Action was required by the town Of Surfside. Over the weekend, two buildings, one in North Miami Beach and one in Miami Beach were forced to close and evacuate after structural issues were found at those buildings. The American Red Cross is working with residents of those buildings to find them alternate places to stay. Right now, miamidade officials not taking any chances of the possibility of any more catastrophes happening as they continue to assess 40yearold buildings in the area. Tropical Storm Elsa is slightly stronger with maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour, up from 60 miles per hour yesterday. It was a category 1 storm on friday, the first hurricane this season before being downgraded over the weekend but it left behind a trail of destruction in the caribbean, more than 1,000 damaged homes in barbados and downed electrical poles on st. Vincent. Three people are dead on saint lucia. People were evacuated in cuba over fears of flooding as the storm brushed the islands southern coast. In florida, a tropical Storm Watch is in effect on the western coast, as far north as Tampa Bay. People are taking precautions. In the Tampa Bay area folks filled up sandbags over the weekend. The remaining part of the Collapsed Building In Surfside was demolished over fears it might not be able to withstand the strong winds of the Storm And Risk the safety of rescue workers. They listed the damage the state could face. We are preparing for isolated tornadoes, storm surge, heavy Rainfall And Flash flooding. Fauci talking about people who are vaccinated wearing a mask. Listen to this. In an environment in which you have a high level of viral dynamics and a very low level of vaccine, you might want to go the extra mile to be cautious enough to make sure that i get the extra added level of protection. In your expert opinion, how do you think people who got vaccinated are going to react to this kind of message . Well, i think there are some people who are overly cautious and will wear a mask. But i think thats one of the things that actually slowed down vaccinations was the mixed messaging about masking. We heard dr. Fauci say earlier this year that even after everybodys vaccinated, well still be wearing masks until 2022. And i think thats the kind of messaging that was confusing and it led people to say, well, if im going to still wear a mask until 2022, and i cant get back to normal, then why get vaccinated. So the reality is, if youre vaccinated, you should be able to have some level of comfort and safety. The vaccines are 95 effective so we know that theyre highly effective. We also know that if you were to contract covid19 and you were vaccinated, your Disease Course and your symptoms would be much less than if you were to contract covid19 without having been vaccinated. So i think for me, im not going to wear a mask. I am fully vaccinated. Ive been giving vaccines. I encourage people to get vaccinated and so i think its you know, an abundance of caution some people will. Most people are not going to wear a mask if theyre vaccinated. After dr. Fauci said you need to wear a mask, he came out and said if you are fully vaccinated you dont have to wear a mask and now hes saying even if youre vaccinated you may need to wear a mask if youre going to a low vaccination area. So its a flip and a flop and a flip again. Was about the Delta Variant . There is some concern this morning that states will propose some new restrictions because of the Delta Variant. As a doctor and lawmaker, do you think thats necessary . I think whats necessary is that if youre in a high Risk Group and youre unvaccinated, you certainly should isolate yourself, remove yourself from large groups and large crowds of people, especially if those individuals are also unvaccinated. The most important thing is that if youre vaccinated, youre protected. And i think thats why theres mixed messages about the mask and thats why its confusing. If youre vaccinated you should be able to go without your mask. If youre overly cautious and you have risk factors, then you may want to wear a mask but it should not be necessary to wear a mask and i think that states rather than or cities, rather than going back into lockdown, if theres a low vaccination rate, that should be another impetus to get vaccinated in that area if youre unvaccinated. I think thats the issue. I would continue to encourage people to get vaccinated. The vaccines are safe and a effective. President trump did a great job in getting the vaccines to us and to the public in record time. So if youre unvaccinated, really reconsider getting vaccinated now that we know theres a new variant thats circulating. All right. He was just about to turn 20 years old. He wanted to become a Police Officer. And his life was taken this weekend. Mayor Laurie Light foot says she thinks illegal guns are the reason. We have the strongest Gun Laws in the state, if not the country. If we go to the surrounding borders, they had nowhere near the amount of crime we do. We have a People Problem in chicago. We have zero accountability for parents in the city of chicago. No one is raising their kids, the gangs are raising them. We h is the worst in the nation. Its a trickle down effect. This is what were running up Raymond Lopez sits on the other side of the political aisle. He is lori Light Foot. Take a listen to what he has to say. The mayor is not up to the job to keep the city safe. We want her on record to explain how she is going to keep chicago safe. It is out of control. We need to get results that keep people safe. Is there pressure on lori Light Foot among local leaders like yourself because i struggle to think that there is. Im sure she does have some support at the local level because she still is implementing these policies that are really affecting and sort of undercutting the Police Officers ability to do their job. Whats the local dynamic there . Theres a lot of pressure, actually just this last Friday Alderman lopez, myself and another alderman, we put together a special City Council Meeting and we got actually up to 47 to he show up on behalf of the Crime Issue and what the mayors going to do, how she will be held accountable for this. The Superintendent Of Police showed up as well. In tend, we realized theres a Smoke And Mirror tactic. Theres no plan in place. As legislators i think we have to change the dynamic, how we go after crime. We have to take crime in the pocket. Theyre hurting us financially. Well have to start hurting crime financially as well. What do you mean by that . Everything we do as far as our officers, when they arrest criminals, the handguns, people on the street, people that are looting and destroying the stitch when they hit the cell, theyre out within a couple hours because we have the worst State Attorney in the country, wants to prosecute nobody. If we change the way our City Ordinances are written, we can get criminals in the pocket, with what crimes theyre committing in the city of chicago. The State Attorney can drop the charges but we can take care of it as the local level and thats a way we can start curbing crime here many its a tactic that were excited about. Yeah. To be fair to the mayor, this is a problem that does predate her. So youre saying there could possibly be a financial solution to it. You were a Police Officer. What sort of issues are Police Officers facing now that you werent when you were on The Beat . They werent afraid to be the police. I dont mean that to slight the Police Officers. They love being police. Right now that know Theres Nobody backing them. They want them to combat crime but theyre the first ones to throw them under the bus if something goes the wrong way. We average 6,000 people shot the last 18 months. This is a war zone. Things are going to go wrong. Officers cant be held accountable for everything that happens. You have to let them be the police or were never going to get ahead of the Crime Issue. I didnt have that when i was a cop. It was go out and do the job. I was talking to a Police Officer, i was in chicago last weekend and he was saying that its not so much the defund issue, its sort of just being demoralized and feeling like you cant do your job because the mayor and the local leaders arent there to support you. This year we marked Independence Day after a year of watching the names of our founding fathers stripped from monuments, schools and just about everything else across the country. Joining me no weigh is former 1776 commission member, dr. Carol swain. Carol, thanks for being with us this morning. Thank you. Id like to say that the 1776 commission is still at work. We didnt decommission ourselves because of the executive order. All right. Thats good to know. I do want to get to this as far as the statue, we saw it all last year, statues being ripped down, things being burned, names of schools being changed. Theyre basically trying to rewrite history here. So whats going to happen for the next generation when the founding fathers are more or less jussie raced from everything and just he raced from everything and they dont know what happened, what goes on from there . Well, if we can as a nation and the narrative that the political left is pushing is one that would not inspire young people to go into the military or to have pride in the nation, and so its something that is destructive to us. It is that effort to Reimagine America as a different country and if we look at what took place last year, lawlessness took place and we saw our Government Officials not willing to stand up and fight back. And so that is the greater concern, is that we dont have officials who care enough about our nation to fight for its preservation. So are you saying theyre just basically bowing down to the people who want to he race them from erase them from history . Absolutely. That is the greater problem. We saw that on the campuses of colleges and universities and it is part of an effort to erase americas history, but also to reimagine and create a different nation. And its not a nation that most of us want to live in. And for those of us who love america, we do need to stand up and fight back and we can do that by holding our officials accountable. We need to do that at the local level, as well as at the national level and we see that the democratic party and im not trying to pick on democrats, but they are the ones that show no Love Or Respect for our nation. Theyre the ones that are encouraging the left to destroy our Nation And Everything we cherish. It will have to get to the point where people have to speak up and stand up for what is right. I want to get to this. The largest Teachers Union says critical Race Theory is reasonable and appropriate for kids. I want to get to this full screen from the nea, they claim that that it is reasonable and appropriate for a curriculum to informed by academic frameworks, for understanding and interpreting the impact of the past on current society including critical Race Theory. Your thoughts on this statement . Okay. Thank you. The problem is critical Race Theory was something that was birthed at the university, in the legal department, philosophy department, and the ideas are too complex for kids from k through 12. The other part of it is that theyre using moments that have been cherry picked from the civil Rights Movement and presenting that to children as young as those in the first grade and if they wanted to teach civil rights, it should be taught at an age appropriate level but the whole story of civil rights, the whole story of america and if you were doing that, you would have to look at the fact that even during slavery there were white abolitionists, there were white people that donated money, philanthropists to create black schools and colleges and universities, historically black colleges. There were blacks and whites who worked together during the civil Rights Movement and so if you actually presented the worst times of our history, along with the response of how people came together and how they changed things, that would be beneficial. And so people like me, we want history taught but we want it taught in a balanced way that shows that we live in a great nation where people do come together. They work across racial, ethnic, and partisan lines. Thats not the message were giving our children. Youre exactly right, a balanced everything needs to be balanced. Target and walgreens are the two main retailers heightening security effort. Target told Local Media the decision to adjust store hours in San Francisco was related to the rise in Theft Theyve experienced over the last months. Meanwhile, Security Guards at some walgreens stores have been told not to engage with shoplifters. Police are searching for two would of men caught on camera, burning a thin blue Line Flag in new york. 24 allegedly they allegedly stole the flag from a brooklyn Auto Repair shot. An organization called Protection Docks heard about his dogs heard about his story, setting the wheels in motion for an emotional surprise for this deserving soldier and a i was honored to be there. My brother has seen a lot of things while he was over there and i feel like sometimes its hard for veterans to express those things to people who havent witnessed similar experiences. Whats it like seeing your son so happy right now . Im excited. You know, i got tears in my eyes. I put him on the plane when he got deployed, i got him off the plane. Hes back and hes say. Were hoping this will be a little more peace to help him take the next steps. We are in front of a 9 11 memorial. What does it mean to you as a veteran . To me, this right here is what brought in a lot of the guys that were coaching me or brought me up as who i was as a soldier. I was in for a he total of five years. I was medically retired. I did one tour to afghanistan and one to syria. It was the calling, it was something i was going to do. He was promoted on the battlefield to sergeant out there. Theres been plenty of times i had messages when something happened that it was blackout and you didnt know if your child was okay or not. It was terrible, terrible experience for a parent but we made it through and we supported him together. Ever since he was little, i always remembered him, my grandparents would buy him Army Uniforms and he would run around in them. My brother is serving in the marines. My Step Daddies a cop, im a cop. You provided zach with a best friend for life. Why do you think Service Members need Service Dogs . Its one way we can really give back to not only the community but our veterans and you cant lose track of what this country is and why we have the freedom that we. Its because of the people going overseas, doing what theyre doing, sacrificing their lives. If we can just give a dog to someone and that makes a difference in general, were going to do it. Such a cool story. Oh, yeah. It was so cool to be a Fly On The Wall and watch that moment that would have happened with or without our cameras there. He was going to get that dog and it was going to be a big surprise. It was going to take place down at the 9 11 Memorial And Museum and to watch it all unfold, his mom and dad, tears in their eyes, the sister was just an integral part of this whole thing, he reached out to the protection dogs, an organization that Breeds Service dogs and Police Dogs and she really wanted to get a puppy for her brother. And to read that letter and hear his story and how deserving he is of this puppy was really incredible and you see them there. They are definitely hes definitely going to be a great friend for zach who is just transitioning now out of being honorably and medically discharged in august of last year. Good morning, one big move left for this tropical storm before we finally see it begin to work a little more towards the florida coastline. Its sitting just to the south of cuba right now. It will have to pass over the island, when it makes that move it will clear out where exactly it will head, how strong its going to be. Weve seen a diagonal run along the island. It will move north, eventually tracking up the western coast of florida. This is our potential forecast. It slowed down a little over the past couple days, now looking at getting into early Tuesday Morning by the time you really begin to approach that South Florida coast. And then working your way up the coastline, probably not making landfall at least until wednesday at this point as we stay just off the coast but its going of to be close enough that youre going to start to feel the impact so we have the tropical Storm Warnings across the Florida Keys and then stretching up the coast and then eventually that tropical Storm Watch as it starts to make the move. This is the wind field. It is going to maybe just coast along the western side of the island, excuse me, of the peninsula where were going to see the initial winds and then eventually that Rain Moves in. It does look like the heaviest rain again on the western side of the island, maybe 6 inches of rain to 8 inches of rain along the really hardhit spots but again, we were tracking whats happening in miami and the cleanup in surfside and it seems like the worst of it will stay to the west of that.
