[cheers and applause] but the role of Donald Henry Rumsfeld is best remembered for Defense Secretary. The only man who told that title twice. The most recent Secretary Of Defense under president george w. Bush. Where he saw our country through some of its hardest days and was unwavering in the decisions he made to keep americans safe. Ruvmentd was born in illinois. He attended Princeton University and was a naval aviator before running for congress in his home state, winning a seat in 1962 at just 30 years old. He served four terms in congress amid the vietnam war. And went on to serve as an aide to president Nixon Before Being Appointed ambassador to nato. In 1974, He Led president Fords Transition Team and later became president Fords Chief of staff. Ford moved rumsfeld out of the White House and into the pentagon as the youngest Secretary Of Defense in u. S. History. It was a simpler world. We had one major problem the Soviet Union was expanding. Bret after President Ford lost 1976 election. Rumsfeld spent some years in the private sector as one of the nations top ceos. President reagan asked rumsfeld to be his Middle East envoy, a position that even brought rumsfeld Face To face with saddam hussein, the man who would become his biggest foe almost two decades later. A Rumsfeld Biographer says he sounded early Alarm Bells on terrorism and threats to the u. S. Homeland. He was trying to alert the american public to the idea that this is a new threat. And be a new kind of threat. He went so far as to say we would have to hit the terrorists where they are in order not to be hit by them where we are. Bret that fear was manifested on september 11th, 2001. Rumsfeld was then serving as Defense Secretary a second time under President George Bush. He rushed to help after the pentagon was hit. I felt the shock of the airplane hitting the building, went through the building. Bret in the weeks that followed, rumsfeld led the response to the attack and the Invasions Of Afghanistan and iraq. There are people who are trying to do things against this country and other free people and they are having a dickens of a time. There is no pause. There is no lull, there is no gag myer. Bret Secretary Rumsfeld faced heavy criticism from the start. Greerkts how are you, bret . Bret 2007 i sat down with Secretary Rumsfeld and asked him about experiencing that backlash. Bret when you hear people say we won the war but lost the peace. Thats off and on sense we lost the peace. This were people saying we lost the war after we were in it for three days. Bret his tenure was also controversial for the use of enhanced Interrogation Techniques through Abu Ghraib Prisoner Abuse Scandal and conflicting information about weapons of mass destruction. Despite the Bush Administration insisting that iraq had an active wmd program, stockpiles were never found. [siren] Bret Rumsfeld maintained the battle the u. S. Faced was unprecedented, uncharted territory. There was no Road Map available to the president or to me on september 11th, needed the policy to go after terrorists where they are and to go after countries that harbor terrorists. Its very hard to do. First of all, are this is a war thats going to be a long war and its going to take years, im afraid like the Cold War did. We do know that were putting a lot of pressure on terrorists and life is more difficult for them, its harder for them to raise money. Its harder for them to move around. It recalls to mind the statement by Winston Churchill Something to the effect that i have benefited greatly from criticism. And at no time have i suffered a lack thereof. Bret rumsfeld and his wife joyce were married for more than 50 years. She spoke to the roll of faith in their life. I got to sit next to him in church. And i can feel him in prayer. I love it that it is there for him and that he is acknowledging his faith. Bret don rumsfeld himself was quiet about that faith. Certainly your faith and your values and your experiences all contribute to decisions you make and your approach to things. And your judgments about the kinds of things you are engaged in. I suppose thats true of everybody. In their own lives. Near The End of his tenure in 2006, i asked the secretary about his legacy. How do you want history to remember you . Oh, i dont even think about it. Bret yes you do. Come on. I dont. I dont. I think about doing what im doing. I have a full day. I get up early and stay up late. I feel happy to be doing in fact i feel fortunate to be able to do what im doing. To be involved in something as important at this at this moment in our countrys history, i think is something that i feel fortunate to be involved in. I think your package there was wonderful and reminded us so much about his legacy. He didnt talk about a legacy. He really didnt think about a legacy. He was a Change Agent he was someone who lived a very consequential life and you think about the arrows. He served in congress and came to congress in 1926. A great picture in the Eisenhower Passageway outside his office with Eisenhower Campaigning for rumsfeld in 1961 and 1962. He just lived this incredible life. Was the Chief Of Staff to a president who took us through an amazing transformation of our country after the Watergate Scandal and of course Donald Rumsfeld led the Defense Department through a very consequential period of time both during the Cold War and 9 11. So, Look it, hes a wonderful man. Were going to miss him. Our country is going to miss him. It was a true privilege for all of us, included to have spent so much time with him. Bret marc, we went in with trepidation to those briefings that became, you know, daily tv because he could not answer the question and make you feel like he left a lot on the table as far as the question you asked. But, marc, when you are writing for a guy like that, tell me about your thoughts. Yeah, he would always sit in those Press Briefings he would say i will answer the question, i will respond to the questions i like and answer the ones i dont. He always had a way with words. It was hard to write for him because he said things in such a unique way and always better than anything you could come up with for him. I think larry hit on the key point. He was a lot of people come through washington and no one notices when they are gone. Donald rumsfeld was a transformational figure. You know, if you think about, you know, everybody has the image of him running to the rubble of the where the plane hit the pentagon and helping. Bret i think we have that shot. Yeah. But he pulled. He also planned one of the most innovative Military Campaigns in american history. I dont think a lot of people realized that the first war of the 21st century began with a cavalry charge. He put together a Military Plan combined 21st Century Air Power with afghan and Special Forces fighters on horseback charging down through the smoke on taliban and Al Qaeda position. And it changed the way we fight. And lasting ways. It didnt make a lot of headlines below the visibility what people saw. But he transformed our military. He completely transformed the army from this ancient antiquated Division Structure into mobile Brigade Combat teams that can go anywhere around the world. He created new military Commands E revitalized our Ballistic Missile defenses which is why we might be able to defend against a North Korean Missile Attack because of his work. He transformed our global force posture. All of these things he did in office are still benefiting. They benefited the three President S that have served since he left office. And they are benefiting the biden Administration Today and they are going to benefit whoever bidens successor is is. These are lasting accomplishments that will never be taken away. Bret i was on the trip to i think a base in st. Louis. It was when they finally came out and said about the horseback and the Special Ops on the ground in afghanistan. There was a fax of a picture of one guy on horseback. And, larry, it was transformational. It did make us think wow, we can do amazing things. Obviously we always think that. But he really transformed that. Yeah, no. I will tell you and marc touched on it but the army was wrestling with the post cold War Era and new it had to transform and had greatens great transformational leaders but lacked someone with the Drive And Persistence and actually, obviously, 9 11 provided an impetus that those other leaders did not have available to them and rumsfeld took the Chief Of Staff of the army and the Army Leadership and really helped them think about what can a modern Look'>Army Look like and it isnt large divisions as marc indicated that are a raid against a single threat as rumsfeld talked about in that clip but that can travel around the world, can be highly mobile and agile lethal and thats the army we have today. And, you know, as marc said, there is an old trope in Washington National Security President S benefit from the legacies of their predecessors. Thats true but President Bush benefited in realtime from the legacy of his Secretary Of Defense who really did help with the great Army Leadership to transform the united States Army into something that was quite different from the Cold War. The District Attorney Kevin steele criticizing the Courts Opinion responding he was found guilty by a jury and now goes free on a procedural issue that is irrelevant to the facts of the crime. The 83yearold was sentenced to 10 years in prison after a jury in 2018 found the actor Guilty Of Drugging and assaulting Andrea Constand in 2004 while nearly 60 women came forward accusing the actor of Sexual Assault, only constands account held up in court because of the Stat Statute of limitations. That used to not be politicized. We keep losing these institutions. Now its the supreme court where we are trying thats trying to be passed. The Intelligence Agencies have been politicized for the past five years. And now we are seeing a politicization of the military with critical Race Theory and various things that general milley was testifying about that is really troubling to a lot of americans. So, for me, the big Issue Isnt whether former President Trump disagrees with millie and his approach and what was said in hiS Peculiar. The bigger issue is that i feel that there is a strong push from the left to politicize the military and its one of the last vestiges, one of the last institutions that hasnt been politicized and now we are losing that, too. Bret i guess, yes, youre right to point those concerns out and criticisms out but, obviously, general milley has a 39year military career. He has had four Bronelz Bronze stars. A whole list of awards. He has served all kinds of things and that service should be recognized and appreciated along the way. The i want to turn to Climate Change, leslie. Because we dont have that much time. But, take a listen to the pitch from administration officials. There is so much investment that we need to do to protect ourselves from Climate Change. Making sure that roads and bridges and dams are resilient when it comes to Climate Change. Climate change impacts all of us. We are really laser focused on these Climate Change impacts. Because of Climate Change and i know you all know it, i hope your constituents know it, there is Climate Change. The problem with the open borders is that. Bret there is a lot here. There is a lot over the past few days about Climate Change and, yet, from the left, there is real criticism of President Biden calling him a coward even. Leslie . Yes, and centrist moderate democrat, bret, i would not agree with that calling of the president because if you Look at what Joe Biden has done and has always said, you know, i wouldnt under estimate this man when it comes to Climate Change. Look it, we have a bipartisan agreement going forth with infrastructure potentially and in addition to that, he has always tried and always said that he was going to tie Climate Change to revitalizing the american economy. So if you Look at this bill going forward, it may not give those on the left, far left of my party what they want exactly with Climate Change when you get to the bigger Reconciliation Package that will follow inevitably that will have most of the funding that theyre Looking for. Quite frankly, if you Look at the money thats out there for other areas with infrastructure, such as the electric grid, union jobs, this should satisfy both the Joe March manchins and Bernie Sanders.
