Now, former Fda Commissioners says that in order to better understand what kind of work was happening in the lab. We know that that lab had poor controls. That was reported at the time that it was first open. We know that they were engaging in very high risk research. There is a probability or a possibility that came out of the labs. He says that the ongoing investigation may make all the difference in determining how the u. S. Will handle its relationship with china going forward. I have a sense of relief that we are finally going to find the true origins of this virus, and i think all of the evidence points towards those labs in wuhan, and we will find out, and china really needs to pay. They have been a lot than you would think. Between 2005 and 2012, in the united states alone, there was over 1,000 cases of problems and labs that reach the cdcs radar, and hundreds of cases of Lab Leaks occur here in the u. S. Every year, and over in china, even more so, and as you heard dr. Gottlieb say, the lab in wuhan has had problems with maintaining its biosafety, and there have been six cases of the first sars that have leaked out of labs. Four of them occurred in beijing, china, so if you have to wonder right off the bat about leaks from the slab for sure. We have been talking about it for a long time, but then how did it actually happen . Leaking out of the lab may be part of this, but where did the virus come from . They do not just mutates overnight to jump species. That takes a long time. It happens a lot faster with flu. With coronavirus, there is a mechanism that the virus has, and it doesnt do this out often. Especially when we have a small number of cases. Millions of cases around the world right now, you are not seeing a major Mutation Take place. And that is very significant. Arthel we cant expect china to send out Open House invites to examine the lab, so what steps do you investigators need to take to uncover the true origin of this pandemic . Ive been thinking about that a lot, and i dont want to point fingers here, but we have a lot of research going on here in the united states, specifically a lab in North Carolina, and if you look into this, you will see that the lab in North Carolina has looked specifically at that coronavirus is an new case is very similar to this one. The person running the lab and several people from the lab have worked with people from the Wuhan Lab in china. We are not going to get her to admit anything, for sure, but i wonder about talking to some of the people in the u. S. That have worked with her and dig deeper into this to see if we can investigate if youre in maybe we can find more evidence here. There is clearly evidenced to be found. Arthel we know it is not over yet, but we are making progress against the pandemic with the vaccines and also natural immunity, im understanding, that if he already had coronavirus. Republicans missed this Midnight Deadline last night to get this passed and on the governors desk. Governor abbott of texas has said that he is calling for a Special Session. Can democrats pull this stunt again . Well, they have done it so far, and basically, the law requires a certain number of legislators to be on hand to be able to conduct business, and what happened was a number of democrats just left. They left the legislature, and there were not enough legislators still there to pass this bill. This is something that has happened before. In texas, in 2003, when there was a huge fight over redistricting, democrats control the legislature of the state for 100 years, and republicans had wanted to redistrict. And so, they did, and to stop it, democrats actually fled the state. They didnt just leave the building. They left the state. The fight went on. The governor at that time, rick perry, called a Special Session, just as Governor Abbott is doing now, and democrats left again and went to New Mexico for a month. So, this could go on for a while because there are procedural techniques that are available to them to the Minority Party if they want to use them. Alicia well, lets take a look at what does Voting Bill entails, why democrats say that they are so upset. The new i. D. Requirement to cast a ballot by mail eliminates drive through voting, and it empowers Poll Watchers, meaning that if they say something is off, they can speak up. Democrats consider that to be kind of an intimidation tactic, but the charge by the president is that this bill is an assault on democracy. Democrats and those who oppose the bill say that this is really a way to keep black and brown people from voting. It is hard on the poor, from urban districts. What do you say . Well, we have seen a lot of hyperbole about a lot of these republican bills around the country, and i think you are seeing it here in texas. Now, obviously, there has been a long fight over voter i. D. , and the republican attempt to adapt voter i. D. To mail and voting is causing controversy all around the country. The idea of eliminating drive through Voting And 24hour voting, now, it is not like texas have some of drivethrough Voting And 24hour voting. Those were installed as a way to deal with the coronavirus, and mostly in one county. Harris county, where houston is, so republicans are saying that didnt work as well. It is expensive. Keeping a Polling Place open overnight, that sort of thing. It doesnt work. So you can have a legitimate argument about this, and i think that there is a lot of hyperbole going on right now about what the bill would actually do. Speak to you mentioned these other states, and we can put up a map. You can see its 14 other states have passed other restrictive Voting Laws, but some of these, like in texas, some of them are readjustment back to precovid because things have loosened up in order to allow people to get there, get to the polls in a safer way, but democrats want to keep it that way because they feel like this is the g. O. P. s way of sort of like cheating a little bit, trying to edge out and win next round. Well, The Point is, these are legitimate debates that have about voting. It is not a reimposition of jim Crow Or Anything like that. One last thing on what we are seeing in the Texas Legislature right now is kind of ironic, given what is happening in washington, and in washington, many democrats are thinking about eliminating the filibuster in the senate, and the reason they say they want to do it is because it allows the minority to frustrate the will of the majority, and what you are seeing in texas is republicans are in the majority in the legislature. They pass this bill, and democrats are trying to frustrate the will of the majority. Both cases, the majority is ultimately going to win. But here again, these are normal policy debates that if they were not so sort of hyper emotional right now in the wake of the Trump Presidency and the 2020 election, i think the much calmer debate. Alicia has got to wrap it up, but i do want to hit on something else. The first thing i thought of was the Campaign Trail and how this is going to play out on the Campaign Trail. You talk about hyperbole. That is all that is going to happen here, right . Yes. We have seen all of these accusations, the biggest one is that the republicans are sort of trying to take the nation back to the years of jim crow. So, if you eliminate 24hour a day voting, which nobody had before, you are somehow taking the nation back to jim crow. So, we are seeing and we saw it in georgia with their lot. This is a district where albuquerque is located, and the republican in this case is really going after the democratic opponent on herself for reforming the police. Is this something that you believe democrats need to worry about, not only in this election or in 2022 . Thats a great question. I think that we have to look at each district. This is a highperforming district. Won by 16 points. President biden won by 23 points, and so, really, what we should be doing is turning this conversation around and saying why are republicans voting for the January 6th commission to study the violence that happened at the capital this year . And so, we can talk about this debate around crime and intervention. President biden has proposed funding, Community Violence Prevention programs. Will republicans actually vote to fund this program . Those are the questions that we should be asking when we are thinking about the 2022 elections. Alicia we see the video after video, this shooting in miami. It just seems to come on a daily basis, getting back to the issue of Police Reform, is this something that can hurt democrats in 2022 . While, violence hurts anyone. It is not just a democrat or republican issue. The city needs help, and that is where they can step in and help with funding around intervention programs. We cannot afford to just allow these cities to create programs and figure it out on their own. This is why we have federal dollars that can go to Fund Community Violence intervention programs, and that is what the president is trying to do. We just need to make sure that republican members of the House And Senate actually vote to pass this. Alicia david, if kristal is right, left to their own devices, not managing to get this done, but democrats in these big cities dont seem to mind. While, as many of these democratic cities have huge budget surpluses, they should consider putting more towards the police force. The challenge for democrats, not only for the Special Election, but going into 2022 is that independent voters and that persuadable democrats also believe that the democratic party is becoming antipolice. To underscore that, you see sheriffs across the country, just recently, indiana, virginia, west virginia, pennsylvania, all democratic sheriffs left their own party because they believe that they have become antipolice. The problem for democrats is that voters believe that they are antipolice, and for republicans, we should continue talking about what we want to do to make sure that police are keeping not only our u. S. Capitol, but also our neighborhoods safe. Alicia President Biden has said that he does not support this idea of defund the police. Do you think that that message gets through to people who are kind of on the fence between democrat and republican, if they are thinking about switching in 2022, because like i am the White House doesnt support that, even though republicans have been pretty effective at trying to convince them that he is. Speak out of what President Biden says out of the White House, it is what voters see on their streets, and what they are seeing in many major cities is crime is up. Murder is up. Homicide is up. What politicians in washington say, and there is what voters see everyday in their neighborhoods. Want to instead give them a guidance counselor, not a jail term, for them as violent crimes, and you know, it is a really hard message for republicans. Kristal, do you have any concerns over this . Well, i do have members, concerns that members of our congress, sitting in the senate, are using taxpayer dollars to waste time, quite frankly. And so, we have to ask ourselves, if there was not a Diversity Problem in the military, why would a program be created . Why would they ask for more Diversity Training to actually take place . Remember, these are people, americans who are going across the country, going across the globe, fighting on our behalf, meeting with other cultures, really trying to address a cultural situation that they may not have the training for, and so, these trainings absolutely need to be in place, or else it would not be implemented, so why is it being implemented . Could this create some legal problems down the road . Well, as he would always tell me, transparency is paramount in washington, d. C. , and that we should always be advocating for federal employees to mention when they believe that there is something bad going on or that government is breaking rules, and just as Senator Ron was always for and has always advocated and kirsten gillibrand, for federal employees to be protected as whistleblowers, just a Senator Cotton and that they are saying that members of the u. So, if they materialize, they would be good stories where the president to tell to try to push the rest of his agenda through. Arthel well, we know politics are always play, so once i doesnt want the other side to push the needle forward. That said, where might he find agreement with the g. O. P. . I think infrastructure is the one that keeps coming forward, isnt it . They already seem to be discussing some kind of compromise between the President S larger plan and then the more constrained plan. This is something that you ultimately have to sell taxpayers. Roads and bridges and dams. Whether the Revenue Projections that the administration is making on Tax Revenue, Tax Revenue from corporations, plant, and so much of that is going to depend on which direction the economy goes in. Whether it makes the expectation that this administration has set out or whether it falls short. And then, the huge variable there, arthel, is whether or not enough americans get vaccinated. Enough americans do their part to get the Vaccination Numbers up, such that a sufficient number of consumers get back into the economy. 2. 8 trillion in savings that consumers have put aside from the prepandemic levels. That is more than they had traditionally. A lot of that is going to funnel back into the economy of people feel safe enough to go back into stores and go back to work. Arthel well, that is an interesting take on that because youve got people who, for whatever reason, they dont necessarily, they are not in favor of the vaccine, yet the very people do want the economy to move forward. Businesses are hurting. Momandpop stores are hurting, so it is going to be interesting to see how those two can meet and move the needle forward for the sake of All Of Us. You have mentioned corporate taxes, personal taxes. Sales tax. How can the president , you know, sell these exorbitant prices to the american people . So, the Budget Proposal that he has is a big one, and the programs that he has announced, where he plans on getting the money is from a rise in corporate taxes. Now, they had been cut. 2017, they were 35 . Cut to 21 . He wants to bring them back up to 28 . Between where they are now and where they have been, so a big chunk of the revenue would come from that source. Wealthy americans paying more taxes as well. Whether or not he is going to get that through a republican senate is a big Question Mark. May be willing to go up slightly on his request, but probably not back up to the 20 . Whether or not he is going to be able to marshal enough support, also among conservative democrats who fear raising corporate taxes, so that is a big Question Mark that the president has outstanding. Some of the Tax Revenue is also going to come from people reengaging in the economy. And as the Jobs Number, looking forward to this friday, the Jobs Number will be announced. What happened with jobs in may. Does continue to be pretty good. They were below expectations for april. If they hit expectations and may and continue to rise, you see people coming back into the economy, spending money, earning money, paying taxes. We are in what i believe a perfect inflationary storm. The reason i say that is because demand is so far up and we are having so many issues with the Supply Chain coming out of the pandemic. The federal government is looking to spend even more money, which is another, shall we say, stimulant to the economy, which will end up having an overstimulated economy. When we get to that point, inflation kicks in and the most important thing to remember here, inflation is a tax. Its a hidden tax. Its a tax because it reduces your the amount of money that you have in your pocket. Thats not good for anyone. So youre saying the economy is now overstimulated, if you will, on the part of the federal government. So what is the impact to the overall economy . You have businesses big and small looking to recover from the shut down. It actually will end up having the opposite effect in terms of slowing down the economy. For example, when you go into a restaurant these days, in many parts of the country, things are more expensive and service is slower. Why . They cant get enough help. It depends on how you structure the Special Session. Its not likely to be soon. After the legislature in texas goes out tonight, they meet for 140 days every two years. So were aiming for two Days Everyone 40 years. Were not there yet. Theyll end their session tonight. Theres a period during which the governor can sign or veto bills. If he calls a Special Session, conceivably the legislature can override a veto. Its unlikely that he will call a Special Session in the next several weeks while hes in that period where he can veto bills. If theres no session legislature, they have to come back in two years and try again. He can set a Special Session. He alone dictates what issues can be considered in the Special Session. So theres tools that he has at his disposal. It will be hard for the democrats to kill an Election Reform Bill without maybe killing some other things that they might want. History has shown us that texas democrats have a chance to leave the state when they dont like whats going down in the legislature. It will be interesting to see how this moves forward. I do want to move on. The president has called this an assault on democracy. Democrats and those in the opposition are saying this is to keep black and brown voters from showing up at the polls. What do you say . This is to clarify the rules so they apply equally to everyone. First of all, President Biden has no shame. Delaware does not allow drivethrough voting. They dont allow 24hour Voting periods. One county in texas, Harris County, out of 254 counties put the rules in play without any authority under Stay Law to do this. What the legislature is attempting to do in part is make sure that we have uniform rules for everybody. The 14th amendment to the constitution calls for equal protection of all people. Should we have one set of rules devised by Harris County . They attempted to mail out a ballot to every resident in the county. This was slapped down by the texas supreme court in a 90 decision. If the president of the united states wants to condemn texas as undemocratic, lets see him insist on states like new york and his own Home State of delaware to enact the kind of thing that theyre playing with in one county here without any statutory positive authority to do so. So much of this theres some stuff that is not been talked about much before like requiring people who drive other people to the polls, if you do that for more than Family Members or more than a couple people, you have to provide some notification there. And the democrats have a right. The republicans in my opinion, particularly in the state house, mishandled this. They should have done it earlier in the session. They should have been better presenting what was going on. But for the president to say this is undemocratic, i want to see when delaware allows the practices that were not allowing in texas.
