Obviously today is a momentous day in the course of this awful case that we have watched over the past two years. Hes outside the courthouse in davenport, iowa. Good afternoon, matt. Martha, riveras attorneys tell me he didnt have any family here today. Our understanding is that his parents are still in mexico. He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. The sentencing scheduled for july. One of the most notable moments of this trial, the shock moment, is when Cristhian Rivera took the stand in his own defense and testified under oath. His version of what happened claiming that two men held him hostage basically. They killed tibbetts and left Tibbetts Body in his trunk. Obviously the jury didnt agree with his version and finding him guilty on first degree murder. Could have chosen lesser charges. They chose the very highest. The prosecution in this case open and closed with saying there was a mountain of evidence pointing towards riveras guilt. Three elements included his confession, the video that showed his Block Maibu Circling tibbetts. The jury was urged to use common sense here. The defense said that rivera gave a false confession, he worked a 12hour Shift on a Dairy Farm and given a 11hour interrogation. He was whittled down and confessed. Really out in the middle of a very rural location. And we kind of tried to link it up the best we could through the people that we thought would have some sort of motive. Thats where we went with some of the testimony. Thats very difficult to establish. You think the timing of this trial played a part in some of the Witness Testimony and the Verdict Today . A little bit. It helped as far as 2018 was a much different time than today. 2018 was in my opinion very conflictual for an immigrant. If we had gone to trial within 90 days like a speedy trial would have allowed him to have, i think it would have been very difficult for him the passage of time has allowed some of the pain to heal a little bit. The defense doesnt have a lot to say in this case. In fact, they did not really make an Opening Argument in this case. The evidence was so strongly stacked against this defendant. Obviously gripped the entire state of iowa. A beautiful innocent young woman, 20 years old, her whole life in front of her murdered in the most senseless way. Your reaction to this verdict this afternoon, mark. Theres no surprise the defense doesnt have much to say. They didnt have much to say during the trial. When you waive opening statements, which i have never recommended my students ever do, is because you dont have anything. This defendant came up with a crazy story and the jurors saw through it. The evidence was overwhelming and the system worked. The only thing that was missing in this case candidly on a checklist of things you want is a Bus Load of nuns that saw him do it. Martha we have the video of him circling her initially after she was found after he led them to her body in a cornfield. He said something about, you know, thinking she was hot. He approached her in some way. One of the most curious things about this case to me, he didnt have any criminal report. Sort of things in his Past Or Behavior or anything that would have led him to making this incredibly violent end to what appears to have started out as some sort of, you know, hey, you know, something some sort of chance encounter, mark. Those cases always intrigue us. Intrigues me having been doing this for 28 years, theres those that show no signs. Theres sometimes mental defects that we find later on when the government is seeking the Death Penalty because, you know, people dont generally do things unless Theres Something wrong with them. Clearly Theres Something that people didnt see in his past that caused him to do something so atrocious. Martha i remember in the beginning, several interviews with Molly Tibbetts parents. Obviously this is the most devastating thing that could happen to any parent. She was a freshman in college. She went out for a run. Wanted to be a philosophy major. Everything in her life just pointed in one direction. Obviously they must have been proud of her. A beautiful young woman. They didnt want it to be act the fact that he was an illegal immigrant, mark. They made that very clear. As a result of that, that was not made to be a major part of this story. But he was here illegally. Yeah, i dont need to speak to the jurors to know thats not why they convicted him to speak to the victim just a moment.
