Recent days President Biden had been confident that his approach to the economy, to the Jobs Market has been working arguing he thought the economy was improving because of all the taxpayer funded stimulus and taxpayer funded investment in it. President biden one of the things that im proud of is in the first 100 days that i became president , we have created more jobs in that period of time than any administration in history. But the way i look at that. Its just the down payment. Some Business Owners may have seen this coming arguing the Government Isnt helping right now. As Covid Restrictions are lifted in different places, theyre having a difficult time filling open jobs blaming Unemployment Benefits that these critics argue create a more attractive alternative than a 9 00 to 5 00. I talked to hundreds of workers, current and exworkers, Restaurant Owners, management, you name it. We know whats happening out there. I have to tell you, look, there is no single factor per se. It is a confluence of factors thats leading toward the labor situation. Unemployment insurance is certainly a common denominator amongst them. Officials here are taking time to digest this disappointing Jobs Report. We still dont have any reaction from anybody at the White House or on the president s economic team but we do expect to see him on camera talking about the april Jobs Report in preplanned remarks within the next couple hours. What do you think on your early impression of this number, maria. Look, i think its a fair question to ask whether or not it was selfinflicted given the mass amounts of money that were expecting to hit the economy and how much money has already hit the economy. Look at the front page of the Wall Street Journal today. Businesses are having a hard time getting people back to work and we are throwing Unemployment Benefits 300 checks and the like to people at home. They dont really feel an urgency to get back to the office. Thats one thing. There are some seasonable adjustments here that economists say could make this number a bit fluky. I dont think there is any question this economy is doing well right now. You have the atlanta Federal Reserve expecting growth of 13 in the second quarter. An economy broadly speaking for the year of 2021 with expectations of gdp up to 9 . This was wildly below broad expectation from economists. I think it has to do with businesses being unable to get workers back because they dont need the money because they are getting free money from all the spending right now. Dana could it also i dont know this im just asking. We were hearing about shortages and then prices going up. On things like lumber, gasoline going up, rental cars, copper and then as you mentioned Labor Shortages and this concern about inflation either short or long term. Absolutely. Spot on. You look at shortages in a number of commodities. You cant get the product to build the house. If you look at big huge increases in the price of lumber. You cant get the lumber and you cant get the price you want, that will likely slow down the construction of the house, that will slow down the people going back on the job to work. So it is all connected. I think the Inflation Story is connected as well. We are seeing prices skyrocket for example chicken. It is going to be an expensive summer in terms of Commodity Prices and what we see on inflation. What we havent seen yet, dana, is inflation in terms of pay. That comes next. The good news in all of this is that were not seeing a runaway Inflation Story that would cause the Federal Reserve to take its foot off the gas and say we are beginning to start pulling in some of our stimulus monetary stimulus. That would cause a selloff in the stock market. Right now no indications of that even as were seeing the inflation you refer to. Were not seeing it for wages so far. Bill buffet talked about buffet talked about it last weekend saying if the government doesnt see it, they see it. He called it substantial. On screen Mothers Day reservations this weekend up 64 compared to not last year but two years ago. Ubers first quarter gross bookings up. Fans going back to stadiums. New york will reopen in 10 days. That has a driving effect. You can see how many places are still closed in New York city. A lot of schools have not reopened. Dana and i have talked a lot this past week about The Shifting Sands of the economy. And it is beyond prediction are i think at the moment and perhaps beyond expectation for either side to know what is beneath the surface. If you were to analyze what is beneath the surface and whats in that sands, what would you say is there . I think this is partly selfinflicted. I think schools need to open 100 in order to get a feeling of normalization back and all of the stimulus free money going to people, that is certainly having an impact. This despite utah lifting many of its Covid19 Protection requirements because of the success of vaccinations and lowered number of cases. If you let a senator come up here and speak In The Name Of my children who you guys are abusing, are you serious . Weve had our citizen participation. [no more masks] i move that we adjourn this meeting. Some of this anger came when the public Comment Portion of the meeting was shut down but politicians were allowed to speak. They dont listen to the parents. They ignore the parents. And when you have something like that occur time and time again, then there comes a Boiling Point and i just feel like they could have ended it and gave us our parental rights they are our parental rights. Thats not what happened. We are masking children that are in no way a risk to the rest of the population. A portion of a statement given to Fox News reads the granite School District believes a diversity of opinion and encourage civil discourse as a model for the children that we have stewardship over. One point, two days after this uproar the governor of utah changed course and says he will no longer require k12 kids in the fall to wear masks. Thats a shift. Thanks for that. Really interesting story. Katie Pavlich Editor of town hall. Com. You know the story well and probably in american communities all over the country theyre having similar debates. How do you see this one . They are having some more debates. A culmination of parents over the past year, year and a half really being ignored on the national and local level. Fighting Teachers Unions to get their kids back in school and now they are looking at these School Districts requiring little kids to wear masks all day long despite the science showing that might not be necessary. There is an interesting study out of brown University Showing that actually Mask Mandates in Schools K12 schools dont necessarily stop the spread of this disease and so the requiring kids to do this and yesterday you had a nurse on the channel saying look, she sees these kids, she is in new jersey. There are injuries being inflicted on these kids from wearing masks for eight hours a day. They get blisters on their mouth, wearing dirty masks, not wearing them properly and switched out the right way. There are other consequences for this. To have the School Board allow politicians to take the time away from the parents who have been paying for all of this on a number of different levels is pretty egregious behavior. Dana dr. Gotlieb had this to say. I can think we can do it now. I think we should start lifting these restrictions as aggressively we put them n. We have to preserve the credibility of Public Health officials to reimplement them if we start seeing outbreaks. The only way to have public credibility you need to relax these when the situation improves. Dana he was like everyone needs to take it seriously and now saying were at a point when we can do this do you think people might listen . I think people are listening. Im not sure if the people at the cdc are listening and dr. Fauci with the new cdc guidelines they put out for kids to be masked at Summer Camp Outside and doing all these things that are contrary to what we know about the data of how this disease spreads outside and among younger children. And so i think you will see more frustration from parents. More frustration from regular adults saying i got vaccinated or maybe i didnt get vaccinated but we know the disease is going away and i shouldnt be shamed or forced to continue acting like were in the middle of a pandemic last summer when things have changed on the ground. So that incentive is certainly something that should be given but the biden Administration Hasnt shown any willingness to change things either. So the president wearing a mask outside. Bill thats right. We saw him in plains, georgia with the carters, right . They were inside with them without a mask, took a picture. Came outside and wearing masks. Kamala harris both wearing masks and she kissed her husband before they get on the plane. Confusing signals doesnt encourage people to get the vaccine. How will their Life Change . Thats a key point. Bill end the Mask Mandate is the case he makes. It is your responsibility to protect yourself by getting your shots. He concludes the message to everyone vaccines work and its time to get back to normal. His plea is to end the mandate on memorial february, february 28th. I dont know if thats something President Biden would do. Interesting thought in order to get encouragement out there. The federal government and governments and local School Districts continue to make this argument that these restrictions are necessary because it gives them an argument on the other said to say what they need to do in order to fix the problem. Whether its more Government Spending or especially among the Teachers Unions they want more money to make their schools safer as they try to argue. The Bottom Line is the american people have been very patient. They have been very compliant when it comes to trying to get through this pandemic in the right way possible and they have seen a number of mixed signals from people like dr. Fauci, from the White House, from guidelines that were given last summer how to move forward with this. When dr. Gotlieb says this is about credibility for health officials now, it is. Because people are saying ive done everything im supposed to do and yet i still cant go back to acting like im in my normal life again despite doing everything im told. What ive been saying every month is that we have a School And Childcare crisis in this country that is preventing especially women from being able to go back to work because schools are not reopened in a lot of places and childcare is shut down. And while thats true you cant just leave a 9yearold at home all day alone, and so you saw in this months Job Numbers womens jobs actually fell. There was a net Job Destruction for the month. You got 25 of that. What happened . Under normal circumstances 266,000 jobs would be a great day but obviously were not living in normal times. We still have a ways to go, a Steep Climb from the pandemic and from i dont know if we can call it from a recession but the economic crisis were in. If you look over the last three months weve added 500,000 jobs per month. Last three months added 1. 5 Million jobs to the economy as compared to the previous three. We still have a ways to go. There were bright sides in this report. We saw the Leisure And Hospitality industry, restaurants have the most significant growth. Thats probably and area hit the hardest. As we go into the summer months well continue to see growth three hopefully. Increase in retail in the Retail Space and hopefully well continue to see space there and saw more americans looking for work in the month of april than previous month. There is some bright spots here as we move forward. We still have lots of work to do. Dana one of those places, mr. Secretary, is Business Owners who cant find workers. Weve been talking to several of them this week trying to understand what theyre looking through. Look at some of the Restaurant Owners we talked to this week. Right now is employees, getting people in the door that want to come to work on time and want to be here every day. They are making more money on unemployment than actually working a parttime or fulltime job. They are going to stay home. For 700 people making 800 or 900 Dollars and they will make sacrifices and stay home. Dana they called for enhanced Employment Government to be rescinded so it can encourage people to get back to work. Is that something youll consider . I think that i dont agree with the last Restaurant Owner that talked about people earning 700 when they can earn 900 at work. I think people want to get back to work. Work is long term. Unemployment is short term. I also think that as i mentioned earlier this months report as far as Leisure And Hospitality that includes Restaurant Saw the most significant gains. Lots of restaurants werent open fulltime until recently. I looked to see what states and cities restaurants are open at 100 capacity. About 3 4 of the country right now. There is a ways to go there. Im hoping as we move forward here well see more people returning back to those industries and see those industries come back. Bill i appreciate the silver lining your painting there and we hope thats the case. If that is the case and youre right over the coming months well see these numbers improve. Why push for the trillions in spending and why push for a Tax Increase on the companies and businesses who you want to bring more people on board to make sure that the recovery is as sound as it . Why go there . The plans that the president put forth the american jobs and families plan benefit those companies that would pay more taxes. Better infrastructure and better prepared skilled workers. Universal prek, free community college, Broadband Access across the country would benefit those companies. If we had a chance to when we have a chance to sit in the Boardroom And Talk to them theyll say that. This is investment in the american workforce. They are making the investment and the investment is a good investment moving our economy forward. It is not about getting us out of the pandemic, it is about building back stronger after the pandemic as a country. We havent seen that type of investment in those areas in some cases in 50 years, other cases in a decade. Then the question is should we once we recognize that we do really perceive Race And Gender all the time, should we take an Ostrich Head in the Sand Approach to that fact and ignore it or confront it, look at it. But to those who oppose the curriculum, it basically amounts to teaching that white people are oppressive and the teaching of critical Race Theory. Listen here. Back in the Mid 90s A Detective suddenly began appointed to become the Child Abuse Cop for that town and he began arresting people one after another. Eventually arresting more than 40 people and sending many of them to prison. So this was the story was there was a a there were a series of interlocking Sex Rings in this town involving a foster home, a Pentecostal Church and one many of the poorest people in the community. And but at the center of it was this detective and his two foster children who lived with him in his home and these two foster children became the primary accusers in this case. And that created a feedback where he would talk to the children, they would make accusations, he would arrest people, everybody would be rewarded and he would go back and talk to them again. Even testified at one time in court that for 45 nights in a row one of the girls came and sat on his lap and told him about people who had abused her and then that was the basis for him going out day after day and beginning investigations and making arrests. It tore them apart for years and it has been extremely hard putting things back together. Certainly they can never come back in a normal fashion like our families would. Sadly, because we see things happening today like over the because of the Social Media driving peoples ideas that things are happening in the basements of Pizza Parlors that places dont exist im quite certain things like this could happen today. The stories the children told were so outrageous they didnt expect people to believe them. Stories of people dressed like the blues brothers, climbing in upstairs windows and then leaving.
