What the emails show are several communications between the cdc and the second largest Teachers Union in the united states in the days and weeks leading up to the Cdcs Release of the new guidelines for reopening schools. Heres one of the emails, an except. It reads indeed, look at this. Just a day later, a nearly identical line appears in the cdcs guidelines. The cdc and the Teachers Union say this type of communication is both routine and normal. In fact, the president of the Teachers Union told fox that the afc represents 1. 3 million educators and public employees who spent the last 14 months serving on the front lines of the covid19 pandemic. So naturally we have been in regular touch with agencies setting policy that affect the work and lives including the cdc. Now, this morning the president and First Lady visited that Elementary School in virginia, which was open for inperson learning four days a week. Right now just to put in perspective, 67 of k12 schools are fully open, 30 are hybrid and 3 are still online only. As for what will happen in the fall, president biden says that he believes its possible and quite probable that all schools will be reopened in september, but over the weekend, a white House Official stressing that at this point the White House will not make any guarantees that all schools will absolutely be back open come september. You have clearly its okay for the unions to advocate for the teachers and to represent them. Who is representing the students . That is the problem. Who represents the students at the table . Who did the white House Turn to to share what the students wanted . I think its so potent to watch that exchange between president biden and dr. Jill biden, who studied actually children with emotional disabilities when she was early in her career and she worked in the psychiatric wing of the education. Who is sticking up for what the kids want and need . Absolutely. The science on this has been clear for months. At least during the last calendar school year. Weve seen that kids are not vectors. Theyre not likely to get it, not likely to spread it. The idea that we kept kids out of schools or with this very limited learning opportunity, especially for the youngest kids, its devastating. Theres a lot of parents out there able to make choices and say, okay, this isnt working out. Im going to get my kids out of here and do something else. The kids suffering are the lower incomes or parents continue have resources. We talk about the education gap. These kids are falling further and further behind. They say we understand theyre a stakeholder, right . The teachers are a part of this equation. The person who is not represented in this equatiOn And appears to have been cut out of this equation are the students. Exactly. Thats been the case all along. Because as youve been pointing out in the discussions now and all along, we know that children are least affected. We know theres no risk to them compared to the rest of the population. The numbers of children have been seriously affected are minuscule. So this whole closure of schools has been to the benefit of the Teacher Unions all along. The students have had a voice at the table. They certainly had with the Trump Administration, the president pushing for it. As we note, its a state and local position. Too many localities, the Decision Makers have been far to influenced by the people with the loudest voice and the money and thats the unions, not the students and the parents. Not wanting to commit to saying to people yes, it is time to come back to your workplace, come back to your job.
