If you look behind me, what you see is Police Vehicles and a number of Police Officers, National Guardsmen standing just maintaining that common front of the Police Headquarters. Much different scene, hundreds and hundreds of protesters who came out on the street. A number of cops, i should say in the right gear as well. They went back and forth with objects thrown over the crowd at the police in riot gear. Some fireworks were fired at the Police Officers. Ultimately, they deployed mostly teargas is what they used, but they cleared people up the street, marched up the avenue and cleared off at the street. That is the scene know as the police have taken control. Also tonight the department of Public Safety identified the officer on that Video Shooting Duante Wright a 25 year veteran of the force, married and to a retired officer here and she has kids. Remarkable release of Body Cam Video that we saw today. The narrative on it is that the police made a traffic stop of Duante Wright because he had expired tags. When they checked out his i. D. , and outstanding warrant for possessing a pistol without a permit. When they notified him he would be arrested, he resisted arrest and climbed back in his vehicle and that according to the chief of police pulled her arm when thought was pulling the taser. At the officers immediate distress this was an accidental discharge that resulted in a tragic death of mr. Wright. Daunte wright died shortly after being shot. His mother said she doesnt want People Rioting in the streets. What she wants is to get her baby back. As far as looting. Two nights in a row in the suburb of minneapolis. It wasnt as severe tonight. Nearby the Dollar Tree Store was ransacked and someone tried to start a fire but the fire crews arrived on the scene and they have control of the situation, shannon. Shannon mike, you have covered so many of these things for us. You were there last summer with unrest with Derek Chauvin trail ongoing. Can you tell us what your sense was the curfew tonight but the feeling overall about where things stand with two cases now in that area . I think people are very angry. The people who have been on the street tonight would sum it up that they are very angry, very frustrated appear they demanded justice for george floyd and they didnt get through the Derek Chauvin trial before another black man was shot and killed by the police. And what clearly is being outlined by the chief himself, this was a mistake by the police. It was a mistake with lethal force involved in a mistake that was fatal. A lot of anger on the streets here that is what we are seeing, shannon. In the meantime, parents have a school right next to the ice facility are flaming mad, not at the protesters who set the fire, but instead, they are directing their anchor to the federal officers using what they call chemical weapons to help quell the protest. It was pretty shocking we are the conduct by the reporters there chose the radicalized media and the fact they were challenging the chief who was clearly surprised by that type of pushback, i think symptomatic what is going on in the media. I think it is an overreaction to a very sad tragic situation, shannon. And i think that cooler heads need to calm down. And i would expect more from the leadership of a congresswoman than to say that she wants to abolish Law Enforcement agency completely. There was an officer appears by body cam, i thought she was pulling a taser. She did not. She shucked this young man and he died. All of the officers on the streets each day, we assume the vast majority of them have the absolute best in mind. They are sacrificing to police the communities and serve their communities. What does this do for the men and women on the street in minnesota, especially in the midst of Derek Chauvin trial going on as well . This is tragic on so many different levels, shannon. You have the tragic death of an individual whose accidental death is now shocked the community. There is another side to this that i think people need to take into consideration. Kimberly potter the officer who mistakingly shot this young man. There is no tail and i watch the video tape over and over again. There is no doubt in my mind from the actions and from her words that this was completely unintentional act on her part. There was no murder as Rashida Tlaib is spouting. This is a tragic, tragic accidental death. My organization, we do a post Traumatic Stress issues all the time. No matter how justified you are, it is taking another human beings life. It is devastating. Now, you add to the orinda situation the fact that she did not intend to use deadly force. My heart goes out to her. It was tense all day even when the protests were actually peaceful earlier but that quickly gave way has the night progressed. It was at that point where a lot of looting and the nearby strip mall behind me started to take place. They also decided to go to other places, best buy, target. I dont know if they made it to those locations, but it was a freeforall. And just very, very similar scene to what i saw last year. Shannon so we saw a lot of images the last 24 hours, looting of unrest, people going to stores and nothing to do with apparently the death, the tragic death of Daunte Wright. But what can you tell us about efforts tonight . Was they were different policing, intervention or did the looting just dry up and stop tonight . As i said before, the strip mall, a lot of looters, they wanted to go to other places. And then the police came out of the Police Building and they were able to push people further and further away. And two or three blocks down, the National Guard, throughout the Derek Chauvin trial, it has been a lot stronger crackdowns than i have seen in previous times. Shannon okay. So ted, we have heard from a number of public officials, Family Members who have said they dont want unrest or looting. How important is that message and trying to calm the community dealing with the Derek Chauvin trial. So it is a very troubling, shannon as all of the town members have said it is a tragedy. It is a tragedy for both of these people but specifically a young man, Daunte Wright. That has to be definitely taken into consideration. I want a complete investigation. We know on the Sam Brown Belt that the Law Enforcement officers where, the taser is kept in nondominant hand. So with the left hand, it your taser would be on the right side. Youre right hand, the left side here that taser normally is yellow. It has a yellow kind of grip around it. So the question is and it still needs to be answered is, the investigation, the actions of this policewoman kim porter come up by the way, 26 years on. She was the president of the Brooklyn Center of the Police Officers association. So all of these things have to be taken into consideration. But a man lost his life and that is the most tragic situation here. Shannon and randy, this investigation plays out to what led to the death of Daunte Wright. What about the protocols . What about the training . This is an experienced officer but as ted said and ive seen this from Law Enforcements today, there is generally the placement of the taser in the nondominant hand, the fire and the dominant hand. We hear immediately sing taser, taser, taser. It appears thats what she thinks she is going to deploy. Where does this go with protocol and training . That will be the linchpin of this investigation. She is an experienced officer. She has 25 years end. Shes been involved in other shooting incidents. That is part of the picture appear the other part of the picture is her training. How often does the Department Train in a firearms . How often does the Department Train in taser use . In high stress situation as a Law Enforcement officer myself i observe this on many occasions. Muscle memory is what part of the training that takes place. Muscle memory when it comes down to Firearms Training commit is far and away much more utilized during firearms, Firearms Training as opposed to your taser to appointment training. Because of the simple fact that the use of force, deadly force is such, is utilized more frequently. So you train, train, train withdrawing of your weapon, drawing of your weapon. Muscle memory takes a big role here, especially in a highly charged, adrenaline filled combat situation. And so believe me, im not making any excuses here. This truly needs to be completely investigated, but i sincerely believe that there was absolutely no attempt on this officer to use deadly force. What they are doing is standing providing roadblocks and if you can see, just the throngs and throngs of local police and sheriffs deputies on the scene as well as State Troopers. I want to point out one location with this one building, new Horizon Academy and further down there, that is one of the locations that were looted and burned tonight, but it wasnt burned to the ground. The fire crews got out here as they said they would as Operation Safety Net with accompaniment of the National Guard. They got a handle on that particular fire. Earlier tonight, back and forth with the police and demonstrators. The demonstrators were out on the street to the tune of beyond 700 people on the streets. You get the backandforth and demonstrators shaking the fence with Police Headquarters. Pretty soon projectiles, the bottles on the rocks coming over to the crowd. The Police Respond and mostly with tear gas tonight. Using tear gas to clear the streets and then ultimately shoulder to shoulder, 100 or more State Troopers marched up the street and scattered all the demonstrators out here. Some of them hung around a little while back and forth, but now what you see is a strong robust presence of Law Enforcement. You dont see any demonstrators on the street. There were some arrests tonight and there was some looting tonight, shannon but not as extensive as we saw last night, back to you.
