Governor, theres been a lot written about you, theres been a lot said about you, i do not believe in funneling all this information through the media because the media, for some reason, doesnt like you, didnt like ronald reagan, doesnt like donald trump, its a liberal media so i want to give you an opportunity this hour to cover a number of areas because youve been enormously successful. Your Popularity Ratings are quite significant. You have a very diverse population in florida. Very diverse industries in florida. Its quite remarkable. I want to get started and cover a few areas with you if i might. First and foremost, the virus, the coronavirus. What did you do outofthebox , and what have you done since then to try to protect your population . Go ahead. We looked at the data we had from other parts of the world as we were getting into march and we saw this was a virus that had a disproportionate impact on elderly people and we are the second oldest state in the country so that was something that was very concerning to us. We really viewed it as taking action to protect those vulnerable people as best we could. One of the things we did before any other state, was to protect Nursing Homes. We prevented people from visiting for a time, but then i think more portly, we barred hospitals from discharging residents back into the Nursing Homes if they were sick. Other states did the opposite and ordered those patients back. We viewed that is something that would be very hazardous. At the time there was a lot of movement to send the residence back because people said youre going to run out of hospital beds, youve got to clear the hospitals. I looked at a lot of those models and i didnt think they were worth the paper they were printed on. They were not being validated in real time from what we were observing on the ground in florida so i said you know what if i have to build Field Hospitals across the state i will do that before i send these patients back into Nursing Homes and endanger all these elderly people. I think having done that early was one of the main reasons in florida, we have one of the most vulnerable populations but were 28 Immortality Population on a. Capita basis. Many are higher on a. Capita basis because we have tried to do focused protection of elderly people. This is not something you can completely stop but i do think we successfully mitigated what otherwise wouldve been much more significant damage. And testing, originally the cdc didnt have a test. Because they had to develop a test and develop various tests in addition to the original and have them manufactured and distributed, i wanted to ask you before we go on to other aspects of this virus and how you handled it in florida, i listen to the biden administration, i listen to the critics of President Trump and i think to myself here we have an administration, the Trump Administration that was hit between the eyes by this virus. There were no ppe, there were no tests, there was nothing. They addressed it immediately and as quickly as they possibly could, including the testing. There were no vaccines, we had Operation Speed that has never been done in modern history to develop not one but two vaccines in nine months. Now were talking about distributing it, producing enough and so forth. Even the director of the National Institute Of Health said it typically takes five years. I think to myself if we waited five years we have millions of people dead without the vaccine. Then i see the biden administration complaining every step of the way, saying there wasnt distribution plan. There was. Saying enough wasnt ordered, the trajectory of ordering and producing these drugs goes up over time. They havent changed anything. What is your take on how the Trump Administration handled this . In terms of the vaccines and the testing, the logistics was really, really good. If you look at how the vaccine has been discredited, i wish we got more vaccine every week, but the vaccine is arriving. You have millions of these doses on a weekly basis. Its very difficult logistical Operation And Warp speed got it done. The testing allowed us to be able to leverage testing in ways that made sense to save lives. I wasnt a believer that every healthy person walking down the street needs to get tested. Thats not the way medical science works, but what i did say is we have Nursing Home staff, Nursing Home residents, elderly people, lets Focus Testing on them so we go bid 19 Nursing Homes only. We had a place they could safely recover if they were in the hospital and they could be discharged to a Coronavirus Facility so they werent endangering other folks. Having the testing to identify those folks offered more protection. We wouldve been able to do that without the federal government pushing the resources down to the state of florida. Mark how have you handled the distribution of vaccines . Theres a limited number increasing every day as a result of production over time. How are you distributing them . We were very simple, mark, seniors first. That was against cdc recommendations. They initially didnt want to put seniors in front of the line at all. They wanted to do young workers in their initial Guidelines Wouldve had a 20yearold Grocery Store clerk get a vaccine before 74yearold grandmother. That did not make any sense in terms of where the risk is on this. I was the first governor in the country to reject those guidelines and i said we are going to do are 55 and up community. Thats 4. 5 million people in florida. Thats a lot of folks, but its important to do that so we set a very clear standard, 65 and up and we continue to go all over the state to try to get that done. We have now done millions of senior citizens. We are not done yet but we are getting closer every day. I think those states that prioritize the elderly for Fox Nation when the dust settles in a few months, i think you will be able to show that you were able to reduce mortality more than states, some states are doing their prisoners before their elderly. Its crazy. I didnt want politics to be in this, i wanted to focus on where the risk was. Whats happened since then, of course i was criticized because whatever i do they want to hit me, but then other states started following florida and even the cdc said you need to do 65 and up. We were right on that and i think we were right because we had a Firm Grasp of the data. We understood where the risk was. We were going to understand we were supplying the resources to save the most lives. Mark give us a little information on your background. Im a native floridian, i grew up playing sports, baseball, public school kid, i was recruited to play at yale university. I had never been to New England in my life. I go up there, i showed up the first day of school with Jean Shorts and a tshirt which was pretty standard for the where i grew up in florida but it was not well received in New England at a place like yale. I played baseball there for four years. Eventually he went to Harvard Law and commissioned in the navy as an officer with navy jack. I served stateside, in iraq and a number of other things in that area. I was a federal prosecutor for a time and i was elected to congress in 2012 and elected governor in 2018. With some of those experiences have showed me is the role that leadership plays in politics. Mark, you and i can sit and interview candidates and they may do the conservative checklists and say all the right things, but the question is when you get into a position, whether in the Congress Or Governorship and the pressures on and theyre coming at you, are you going to have the backbone to stand up and do whats right. I think i was prepared to be able to do that. Honestly when i got elected No One was thinking we would have a global pandemic, but i think throughout this ive always had the courage of my conviction to do whats right, to stand up for folks that No One was talking about like People Who work in restaurants or parents that want their kids in in Person School or Small Business folks who have had their world turned upside down, i made to look out for them every step of the way and i think florida has been better for it. During the course of the program i want to ask about other areas too, voting in florida, Big Tech Come youre focused on that, but before i do, simple answer. Given what you have done, given your focus, i unlike New York and california, you havent locked florida down like a prison camp, your schools are open will get into this later. The one thing we looked at on this data mark, it was so clear when we looked at europe, we looked at some of the countries that had kids in school, there was not significant outbreaks. They were not resulting from kids being in school. You have to take that and you have to use that. In an influenza outbreak, it is true schools often times are Germ Factories and it can contribute to the spread of influenza. But for whatever reason, covid 19 was different. The kids werent Big Spreaders of it in the Classroom And Wasnt driving infection rates. There was no basis to say it should be right politics, this is democrats honoring a special interest, a union over the wellbeing of parents and family and the unions suit up when we were trying to do this, and we beat them in court. We got it done and now, if you would even suggest in florida to close schools man, the parents would rebel. They like having the kids in school. Weve had full sports seasons, activities for the kids and their better off for it, and i look at some of these places where the schools have been locked down since march of 2020, they are not going to go back in the spring most likely. The earliest will be the fall of 2021. That will be almost a Year End Half without having any in person instruction. The number of People Who are going to fall by the wayside because of those bad policies are going to be astronomical. The problems from this are going to last, not just months and years, but potentially for a generation. Mark its an enormously troubling because we hear these same people like Doctor Fauci say follow the science and they do it in a zigzag. So now its even past the 1. 9 trillion massive spending bill, which basically subsidize democrat mayors, democrat states, the Teachers Union and everything else you can think of, or maybe we cant send the kids back to school. Governor, i touched on this, california has shut down that entire economy, shut down their schools, shut down its churches and temples. New york, the same thing. Other states, New Jersey and so forth honestly run by governors of the opposite party, you have taken a completely different path which is more of a liberty path, a civil society path, what have you done different than the others and what cause you to do things different than the others . Mark, if you go back to the middle of march, it was all most like a dime where the country started shutting down. We had our theme parks, all these places they just voluntarily shut down. I wasnt telling them to, they just did it. We had kind of late march and into April Anything people started to calm down a little bit. I told all those folks, we want to get you back, we want to get everybody back open so we worked really hard from probably the middle of april to get folks back up and running. Obviously our parks and everything else that we offer here in florida, but we also understood because you had such a massive disruption to tourism, were looking at potentially some Budget Problems and so what i had to do with our state budget, i vetoed Line Item Veto to A Billion Dollars out of the budget which is a record for the state of florida. We also had our agencies spend less of the money that was appropriated to them because we didnt know what was going happen, but what happened mark is because we were open, because we put people back to work, the revenues to our state had exceeded the estimate every single month in december was 330 Million more than the estimate. We are in a situation now where were going to have a budget. Our budget in florida is half of New York states budget, even though we have millions more people. We been fiscally prudent, and i think the fact that we were so attentive to that, that we were going to make sure we were living within our means as well as keeping the economy open, i think both of those reinforced Each Other and now were in a situation where Unemployment Rate is less than the national average, our revenues are much more robust than anyone thought six month ago and were looking to be able to hopefully build off that over the next few months. This is all without tourism even being close to what it was. I dont have flights from brazil or flights from europe like we used to so when that goes back, that will help us and when the Crews Liners are able to start sailing again, which i think they should be able to do, thats going to help so the fact that were below the national average with all those handicaps which are beyond our control, i think is a testament that freedom works, trusting people to make decisions for themselves is what works and using the heavy hand of government to suppress people in for an item is just not something that is proven to be successful. Its not successful in fighting the virus and obviously can be destructive to your economy, and then give rise to a whole host of other downstream problems. Now i understand why youre under attack by the media and by the democrats. Now i understand. You have demonstrated, in reality that capitalism works, that science when applied property properly works, Individual Liberty Works and Citizens Self Responsibility works, in other words youve demonstrated that americanism works. We have families move just because our schools were open because maybe their son played football and you couldnt Play Football and the Lockdown States maybe they just needed to get the kids in the classroom. Theres a whole host of reasons, but when people come from Lockdown States, they remarked about people in florida are just happier. Its a much more vibrant society. I think the lockdowns have really done a lot of damage in terms of psychology and Mental Health in some of those places. There will be People Who visit here that cant believe we have schools open or cant believe people are playing Football Or Basketball are all these other things so some of even said its kind of like your landing in West Berlin from or something because its so much different. I think about that, look, im proud that were trusting people and were viewed as a free state, but also when i see that, it tells me as a country, we can never let this happen again. Where people are shut down like this. It was wrong to do this and weve got to learn our lesson. I dont think Theres Anyone who can look at us and say weve got a be these Lockdown States, weve done better on education and economy, and much better on the other health consequences of the lockdown. Weve talked about your state, it has everything in it, all kinds of people, geography, all kinds of governments, local state, regional types of government. And yet youve managed to get through this election without any real controversy. I look at my Home State of pennsylvania where you had a Rogue Supreme Court, much like your Rogue Supreme Court in 2000 the interfered and changed the election laws. They violated article two section one clause two of the constitution. The State Legislature make the election law. That wasnt the only state in which this happen. You had an number of Battleground States in which democrats and the Biden Campaign went in there and pressured their people to change the law against republican legislation and they did it not even talking about fraud or machines or any of this other stuff. Im talking about the constitution and the law. Your state, which was a disaster in 2000, we hear crickets. Everything went smoothly, you have early voting, it went smoothly, was it because the system was so strong, because you all anticipated there might be issues . Kemo what was it exactly . Mark, its so interesting because 20 years ago no One Wouldve looked at florida for the way to conduct elections. I think there were things that were done over the years by predecessors like Governor Bush and then when i came in, i had the situation of looking at Broward And Palm beach. We accepted the resignation of Brenda Snipes from Broward County and we removed the supervisor and Palm Beach county and replaced her was somebody who had done a good job. Those had been to problem counties. We did that off the bat, took Election Integrity seriously and when covid hit, i refused to do any type of Mass Mail Balloting or any of these things other states did. In florida we had our system, if you wanted absentee you can request it and send it in but were not just going to send millions of ballots into the ether and then try to figure out whats going on. In florida, we knew how many people were voting in person early, how many male in ballots had been received by Election Day and we were able to track the turnout through Election Day. When the turnout is over the people in line can vote in whatever mail ballots still count but you are not voting past the election. Youre not having ballots for in two or three days later. We took all of that seriously and the result was, by midnight on election night, we had counted 11 Million votes, 99 of the precinct had reported it was transparent and fair from the results perspective, obviously we did very well at the president ial level, we did wellin congressional and State Races so i appreciated those results but i can also tell you, if the results didnt go my way i would have no problem certifying the results because it was a free, fair transparent election. It was an efficient election and thats what we need to do around the country. You cant have an election takes four weeks to count the ballots. You cant have a situation where the morning after the election the Election Supervisor can even tell you how many ballots are outstanding to be counted. That all Zaps Confidence in the system. Florida did it right not resting on our laurels. We will do more Election Integrity this year. We will do a full ban on Ballot Harvesting. Youre not allowed to Ballot Harvest in florida and now we see volunteers get involved in that we dont want to go down that road. Were also going to prohibit Mass Mailing of ballots even an emergency situation. It didnt work around the country and we dont want to go down that road in florida. Finally we will ban thirdparty groups from spending tens of millions of dollars to administer elections like zuckerberg scripted in pennsylvania and others. I think were ahead of the curve. I think this reform will solidify us as the leader in Election Integrity in the u. S. Mark virtually every state did okay when it came to the election. It was the one targeted by the democrats, the one that was mostly led by democrats other than georgia. This hr one, the Pelosi And Schumer push, pelosi of California Schumer of New York. They want to replicate the disaster that happened not because they believe in counting every vote or not because they believe in Election Security or their Fighting Suppression and repression but because they want to turn the whole country in the california. They want a oneparty state. So you walk through rationally and logically in person voting, we want to make sure the right people get the ballots, signatures, matching signatures, yes we can do early voting but were not going to do it so early, when i can have late voting were were counting two or three weeks later. This used to be the norm. This used to be the Status Quo. Now its controversial. Now its what are you talking about. We let every vote count. No you dont, you let every legal vote count. So the problem i see is the Democrat Party doesnt want real reforms that are intended to make sure this system works. Theyre trying to collapse the system. You dont have to agree with me but id be interested in your comment on that. Mark, you look at the state you mentioned, california and New York, they take weeks to count the ballots. You dont even know how many votes are outstanding so you could be up 30 points on Election Day and then you end up, your lead gets whittled away or Vice Versa and that just doesnt inspire confidence. That is exactly the way you dont want to conduct an election. You want to be transparent, efficient, crisp result that people can accept and move on. I think what theyre trying to do is exactly what you say, they just want to be able to get more democrats in power and their willing to change any rules to be able to do that. I would know, they will fight things like Signature Verification when it comes to republicans asking for that and maybe in a place like pennsylvania, but what theyre doing for the california recall, they are insisting on draconian standards to do the Signature Verification there because they dont want the Recall Petition to succeed. I think we all see through this for what it is and that bill would be, i think it would be unconstitutional, but that would not lead to more confidence in our elections. Mark i agree. They sell the data come they make hundreds of billions of dollars doing that. We think individuals should be able to opt out. You buy a phone come you pay your money and you can use it. But they shouldnt be able to monetize indefinitely off your use. Also election interference. We saw what they did with the Hunter Biden Story by suppressing it, obviously we saw what they did with President Trump so we have penalties if they D Platform a candidate for office, and if theyre doing things like suppressing or elevating for a particular candidate, batson income contribution. If you had a party for me at your house we would have to document how much money you paid for food and all the stuff because thats be considered a contribution and yet they can do all the stuff to help their candidate and thats just something that doesnt come about just escape scrutiny . That doesnt make sense. Finally, we want the average citizen to be able to have recourse if they are D Platform or if theyre censored. We are providing a way to sue Big Tech under our Consumer Fraud Statute in florida. I think it fits because Big Tech will market themselves as being about open debate but theyre constantly changing their Terms Of Service in ways that really escape any rational Persons Ability to understand whats going on so we think that will be an important check. The power that they can have, they not just silence you but to wipe you off Email Or Text messages or all these other things, they are exercising powers in a Monopoly Fashion that are more robust than any of the powers exercised by the trust at the turn of the 20th century. I think this is a important issue for our time and i think conservatives need to be leaving on this. In florida, we are leading the charge from the state level. I think other states are going to follow us, but clearly the Status Quo is unacceptable. I think this is so important because people say what can we do, what can we do, theres nothing we can do and your governor saying im going to defend the citizens of florida, the federal and state constitutions, these entities operate within the boundaries of florida, these entities are violating our regulations, were going to pass a law to advance the cause of liberty and to protect their data and then you have some of these trade pics while professors saying thats not going to work, the Supremacy Clause in the states cant control, i just want to remind you of this, not go too far in the weeds. Remember massachusetts versus epa, the supreme Court Bent over backwards to give massachusetts standing in a case where it had no standing whatsoever, it dictated the terms of Carbon Dioxide and that issue took off. I think what youre doing is crucially important, and i hope it catches on like a wildfire all across the republican states because this is the way to do it. This is federalism. This is state sovereignty. This is defending the citizens of the state. If it takes off, because of a governor like you and other governors that Follow Suit and defend their citizens because it sure as Hell Isnt going to happen out of the biden White House and the democrats controlling congress. With respect to the writing and the violence the summer, what did you do there. Thats going to pass when the legislature reconvenes so when the writing started, i called up the national guard and said we wont tolerate it and at the same time i see this as a problem. We need to be swift and have swift justice for it.
