We dont know the name of the officer. Theyre letting next of kin know about this very tragic day, this good friday on capitol hill. The fbi is on the scene right now. Police say that it doesnt appear to be part of a larger threat or an ongoing threat, which is one of the Major Concerns in a situation like this. Were trying to figure out whether the is tied to terrorism, whether it was one Persons Initiative and gripe, all of that continues to be yet known here. Mark meredith is on the scene. Hes been watching this since it began to unfold from the white house. More of what we learned from Capitol Hill Police. Good afternoon, mark. Martha, good afternoon. A somber afternoon here on capitol hill. As you mentioned, the sad and major headline that one Capitol Hill Police officer has died. Another is injured right now after that incident that happened after 1 00 when a suspect that police say they did not know of before today started to ram his vehicle at the officers. One of the Security Checkpoints on the senate side of the building. The capitol is this large complex. And it is security. The entrance where this happened is as you were going to the senate chambers. This area, of course, certainly the site of so much security ever since what happened january 6. Within the last i want to say week, two weeks, we started to see some Security Parameters come down. We have barbed wire, National Guard troops. Weve seen a draw down of that. Obviously push back to get things closer to normal as they could be given the circumstances were in. As we heard forthcoming details from the Capitol Police chief of what her department is facing right now. Of course, theyre at A Loss For Words after a loss of an officer. We know to need if there was any specific person targeted in this. Theres reporters asking. She says theres no indication that a specific member of congress is targeted. No information that anybody else was involved in this. As you mentioned, the fbi joining the investigation, Capitol Police and d. C. Police given this is an officerinvolved shooting. Imagine theres a lot of details well never know. We also know that House Speaker nancy pelosi has order the flags at the capitol to be flown at half staff. I dont know if this happened yet. I was looking here on the building. It could take time. Given the circumstances, imagine the pain that these officers are going through, not just here but across the country given the situation that so many Police Officers are dealing with. Were waiting to find out the condition of the second officer that was injured, whether or not well get an update. They didnt indicate there was another news briefing. Odds are well get a statement from the Capitol Police through twitter or whether or not they will have a news release. There was no indication there would be an update this afternoon. What weve seen here on capitol hill right now is besides the media out here, its a ghost town. Congress is not here. Were not seeing the majority of tourists because of the pandemic. Its a decent day here in d. C. , a lot of people were out. I came down from the white house doing the morning shift. And going through Constitution Avenue, it was at a standstill because the city was locking down just in case of what was going on. Things are opening back up. Traffic around the capitol, seeing a few cars going by. For a lot of people, its a gut check and what is happening not only for the threat that happened today but what else may be out there. Capitol police baring the brunt a lot of questions what happened january 6 but now a lot of people with their thoughts and prayers to a department that has gone through so much this year. Martha . Martha mark meredith, thanks for your reporting this afternoon. Only april 2 and already two Capitol Hill Police officers have lost their lives in 2021, which is a horrible assessment of where this stands. Its a beautiful cold day on capitol hill in washington d. C. With that, as we watch the scene on the street here, obviously a lot of stunned officers with what has transpired this afternoon starting at 1 02 this afternoon when that car rammed in to the barriers that you see around the perimeters of washington d. C. These days. I want to bring in former d. C. Homicide detective ted williams. Thanks so much for joining us today. You spent more than a couple of decades as a Homicide Detective in washington d. C. So this suspect was killed, died after being at the scene. So now Homicide Detectives need to begin to piece together a motive. Where do they begin in terms of figuring out what happened here . Well, as you said, martha, a very sad day. Good friday. Law enforcement officer lost his life. Theres people that are going to have all over the country are going to mourn this Law Enforcement officer. But once the suspect, the person now dead, hit that barricade and got out with a knife and was shot and killed, the investigation, again it starts from the party. I would have to believe that by now Law Enforcement knows who the suspect is, where he lives at and also checking to see if in fact hes alone wolf. So those are some of the things that are going on in the investigation at this stage, martha. Martha yeah, they will figure out where the car came from, if he owned the car or if the car was rented, where does he live, who are his Family Members, does he have immediate family that he lived with. I would imagine, ted, you comb through the social media and figure out if theres any indication of what his beef was or her beef was. Were not sure at this point. Youre right. One of the things that theyre looking that purely and will be looking at is hes health to determine if theres a semblance of mental illness. The primary thing theyre trying to do is trying to establish a motive. Sometimes thats not easy to establish. As you said, they certainly will be scrubbing any social media sites concerning this person. Again, without being redundant, they know who he is and where he came from and theyre moving those barriers in that direction. As you said, martha, this is not the we just had officer Brian Sicknick that was killed on january 6 at the capitol. Before that, in 1998, we had two capitol Police Officers shot and killed on the Capitol Grounds there. Theres many incidents there. I drive by that place just about every day going to my law office. I can tell you that up until about a week ago and also barricades, also fences. They took them down. Now we have check points. This is what i want people to understand. This happened as one of the major checkpoints that the senate and congressmen go through. Its at that point where they also have an inground barricade. The inground barricade is up. So just before you get to the inground barricade, you come in contact with Capitol Hill Police officers that will check your i. D. And your credentials and be on this property, theyll let you through. On this instance here, it appears as though that they may have checked this guy out, person out. At that stage he tried to run past them, hit the barricade and got out with a knife. They wound up having to shoot him. All right. Thats an interesting theory, ted. That perhaps he was trying to get away when he ran to that barrier after they were asking him for i. D. , who are you, why you want to go further than this. These are all pieces of the puzzle yet to be put together. An interesting point that you make in terms of how you get around these areas and where the i. D. Checkpoints are. Ted williams, thanks very much. Former d. C. Homicide detective. Great to have you with us today. Joining me now, california congressman ro khanna who was told by his staff to get away from the Capitol Complex during this incident. Congressman ro khanna, good to have you with us today. Not many members of the house or senate on the hill on this good friday afternoon. You were in your office and i believe you left the building shortly before this happened. Can you fill in the pieces of your understanding of all of this today. Sure. First of all, my heart goes out to the officers family that lost his life in service. Such a debt to the gratitude and admiration of the Capitol Hill Police. They put their lives at risk every day. We should take a moment as a country to honor their service. I was in the building. I stepped out to go get lunch. As i came back in, i got frantic calls from my staff saying theres been an incident. I did know how serious the incident was. They locked down the Cannon Office builder and the entire complex. The officer directed me to my car in the parking lot where i still am because its been under lockdown and said just stay in your car. So it was dramatic in part because it reminded us what happened january 6. Im grateful to the Capitol Hill Police for keeping the place safe. Martha everyone of course concerned that it could be another effort that was on a larger group involved at this point. The police saying in the News Conference that they dont believe this is an ongoing threat, that they were not familiar with this person. He was not on their radar. Congressman khanna, with regard to the National Guard, that we saw jogging swiftly in the direction of something that raised concerns about what they might be running to, their posture has been down graded a bit. Theres not as many as there were after january 6. Talk to me about what you think in terms of the protection that is needed on capitol hill. It appears this barrier and these officers were able to do their duty. One of them lost their lives doing it today. You know, there were barriers put up, barbed wire fence around the capitol, that really was unfortunate that that was there. The capitol is supposed to be open to every american, to school kids, people visiting. I was pleased when i saw the last few days that they had taken that down and i thought finally were getting back to what the american capitol should be. Obviously this incident reminds us that theres still an enormous threat. My view is we need to do whatever is going to keep us safe. Its not just members of congress. Its the Capitol Police whose lives are at risk. If theres other measures that need to be taken to protect them, im for it. We cant have a situation where were losing officers because we didnt take a precaution. Martha thanks, congressman. Congressman ro khanna. Thanks for being here. Thank you. Martha lets bring in dan bongino, former secret service agent, former Police Officer and fox news contributor. Thanks for being here, dan. Obviously were just thinking about this officer who lost their life this afternoon in this incident that began shortly after 1 00 p. M. We dont know who this individual is at this point. What is going through your mind today, dan, as you watch this . Well, you know, first, outside of our police and military, how many jobs do you know about where you go to work and say, i may not come back alive . That is what they do every day. The really heroic thing about that is they dont even think about it. Not the Police Officers and federal agents i worked with. They dont go to work on a pity party. Gosh, my job is so dangerous. They do it. Its no solace to the family and never will be. The grief will be unimaginable when we find out the identities of the Police Officers, but they died heros. They did. Investig investigatively, i heard the two prior guests, its all speculation at this point. Speculation is always dangerous. Given the facts that we know, theres some facts, seems at this point if theyre eliminating the Terror Motive early, and it is early, saying its not likely, but it seems to me that this could be potentially a suicide by cop scenarios. If theyre not finding explosives in the car and theres no indication that that is the case, why would you move into an immovable barrier and get out with a knife knowing the Police Officers had firearms. Again, given all possible explanations except the one that is the most parsimoniously. Martha great point, dan. Too early to rule anything out in terms of motive, so we have no idea and we have seen, you know, similar attacks. We have later learned what kind of motivations were attached to them. This is just beginning in terms of this investigation. Dan, thanks very much. Dan bongino, friend of ours and a fox news contributor. We want to go to chad pergram. Weve heard the lockdown has been lifted. Our Congressional Correspondent has within with us and joins us live from capitol hill. What do you know about this point . A couple moments ago, martha, they came on the Intercom System and announced that they lifted the lockdown shortly after 1 00. And the u. S. Capitol police chief said that this incident went down about two minutes after 1 00 eastern time this afternoon. We were standing in this place. We heard them come on the loud speaker and a flounce that they were locking down the capitol. The last time that i heard that on the Loud Speaker System was on 16. Its been a long time in that regard, that theyve had to lockdown the capitol. The important thing to note here is that this fence line around the capitol, that is the very edge of the perimeter. The street that he came up on, Constitution Avenue between the Senate Office buildings where a lot of the senators have their offices and Committee Hearing rooms, theyre on the other side of the street from Constitution Avenue. This is the main senate entrance to the Capitol Complex. Theres a fence line there that they erected after the 16 riot. Just about two weeks ago, they took down an outer perimeter, several blocks away. You had to have a special clearance to get into this area. Now with Constitution Avenue being open, you can have somebody come in and do what they just did today, run over these Police Officers, ram the barricade there, but the one thing that i want to emphasize is despite the tragedy of the officer that lost his life, the system worked. Theres two underground barricades that they raise and lower to allow vehicular traffic that is allowed to be on the Capitol Grounds in. Thats what stopped this car. At that point, the suspect after he rammed his car into that initial barricade, theres a second one behind that, jumped out with a knife. It was described as something between a machete and a Kitchen Knife and started to lunge at the officers. Thats when u. S. Capitol police shot the suspected and he died. The other thank that is utterly tragic for the Capitol Hill Police, you had 140 officers that were injured in the 16 riot. Some who never returned to work. Youve had a number because of the nature of what happened on 16 that decided to retire or quit. You had one so upset at things that turned in her weapon because she was afraid of what she would do. This is a department in trouble. Prior to today, i should say prior to this year, you had only had two u. S. Capitol hill Police Officers ever die defending the u. S. Capitol. Heres is april 2 and weve had two die this year. We havent even spoken about the officer that committed suicide a few days after 16. This is a department that is really reeling here. Now the investigation gets underway i was told early on that they didnt think that this had a nexus to terrorism and something that robert conte, the new d. C. Chief said was terrorism. I was on the phone with a former capitol Security Official that said that this isnt over. What hes referring to is the events of 16. If this has nynex susto nexus to any Feature Problem this is why this is so important. All former house and Senate Sergeant at arms and Capitol Police chiefs that have gotten to know and worked with over the years and have used sources, told me the problem with 16 is that they allowed people to get too close in to the skin of the building. So even though you have this other fence outside the capitol along Independence Avenue On The House Side and they have taken the barbed wire down, youre keeping the Fight Outside. That was the phrase used. They kept the Fight Outside the building. Somebody didnt get into the bidding. We had about 800 people surge into the building january 6. This will reignite the conversation about what the Security Perimeter should be around the u. S. Capitol. Just before the congressional recess, were in the middle of one, you had chris van holland, roy blunt from missouri, a republican and Eleanor Horton the nonvoting delegate from the d. C. Side said that we have a bill to bar people from getting in. They still want people to come in and see them and visit them. The Capitol Complex is a very different government institution. Its not the state department. Its not the pentagon. Its not something under the executive branch. They want people to have access to the capitol. Sometimes just to the grounds before the riot happened, you know, last fall, we would see people out doing yoga on the Capitol Grounds and on a nice day, certainly in the spring time, the Cherry Blossoms in washington d. C. , typically a lot of people around the Capitol Grounds sunbathing and having a picnic just to get out of the house during the pandemic. But to get to that point where the suspect got today, you have to have a hard pass to get into the capitol. You have to be a member of congress, a senator, a hard pass if youre a staff member if youre a journalist. Thats the Point Of Entry that i take every day. I walked through this morning about 8 45. You can only get in at the Capitol Complex at that location and another one on the house side. You have to go through security. So again, its going to reignite this conversation about should they have the perimeter of the capitol further away. As the former Capitol Police chief and sergeant at arms said to me, keep the Fight Outside. They demonstrated today that they kept the Fight Outside but they certainly did not have that happen on 16. This is why theres talk and the House Speaker has alluded to this on multiple occasions that they have to have some sort of additional Spending Bill a supplemental appropriations bill to fund capitol security. Theyre going to have to have this Quick Reaction force here being ready to go, the National Guard, they were just reextended in the middle of march through the middle of may. So they will probably be reextended again in some capacity as they reevaluate what happened here. Something that ted williams said a few minutes ago that was important. That they probably know who this suspect is. When we have had other Security Incidents in the capitol, they have been able to track the suspect quickly because they get pictures of the license plates. They have cameras all over the place and they know who you are. Martha . Martha chad, thank you very much. You know, one of the questions that played out here and i would imagine, chad, that theres cameras all over that area as you just point out whether or not this suspect who is now dead rammed in to these Police Officers or whether or not he went straight in to the barrier and then got out and got into a battle with them. That question is not answered yet, correct . I was told pretty early on that what happened is he is you know, he came up the street, hit the officers and then his car rammed the barricade. He got out of the vehicle, wielded the long knife, whatever it is, lunged this is what the Acting Police Chief said and thats when they fired at the suspect. They had this knife that he had. So he hit the officers first. Usually a contingent of three to five officers there, a guard shack with officers, another guard shack a few feet away. Since january 6, weve had a contingent of National Guard troops ive seen anywhere from 5 to 8 there. If you go down the street 30 yards, usually another eight to ten. Go up the street, another eight to ten there. Robust contingent of people. The question is about having that street open, they closed off many of these streets in washington d. C. Between the house and Senate Office buildings and Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the white house after the Oklahoma City bombing. Had this street been closed, two weeks ago like it was, this incident would not have happened at least here at the capitol. Maybe it would have happened further out if somebody was intent to do things. That entrance, you couldnt get anywhere near there with your vehicle. Chad pergram, thanks very much. Let us know if you get anything new as we move through this story. Chad pergram on capitol hill. Lets bring in john katco from the Homeland Security committee. Congressman, we invited you on to talk about a couple other things but this is the big story this afternoon. Your reaction to what happened at that capitol. My heart bleeds for the Capitol Hill Police. January 6, like chad mentioned, one died, one later committed suicide, over 100 were assaulted. I remember seeing at 1 00 a. M. After the assault in the state that they were in, they were badly bruised, bloody. Uniforms were torn. They were Still Standing and watching doing the brave stuff that they do every day. You know, their leadership has gone through some bumps. The morale amongst them is very low. Despite that, they did their duty today and someone paid the ultimate sacrifice for that. My heart bleeds for them. It points out that we need to do more Going Forward to make sure that they have the tools necessary to keep them safe and keep us safe. Thats one of the things im trying to push. I have a january 6 Commission Bill that were pushing to do like a 911style postmortem of january 6. Now of this incident. Say what more do we need. Instead of throwing monday at it, lets get the capitol more secure and get them the tools that they need to keep us safe and them safe. Martha a great point, congressman. After events of 911 here in new york and january 6, its makes it hard. Makes it hard to go back to the openness you had prior to that. Its a sad state of affairs. Now that youve had these backtoback incidents in still a fairly new years of 2021, you have to wonder if were ever going to get back to the kind of freedom that you had to move around on capitol hill as a citizen of the United States of america. Yeah, incidents like today that happened today have happened before up around the capitol where individuals for whatever reason decide to do something really stupid and really dangerous. Weve always managed to keep the place secure. January 6 was profoundly different in that regard. It was a failure of sharing intelligence, a failure of what was obvious to many people. We have to make sure it doesnt happen again. Very similar parallels to what happened 911. The agencies were not exchanging information. They werent reading the tea leaves to what was percolating. We got caught shot. Since then, weve done a better job keeping the country safe. We can do the same thing when republicans and democrats get together in a balanced commission and take an unjaundiced view of what we can do to make it better. We can get it done. Lets not forget, the ultimate sacrifice of the Capitol Hill Police officers have paid this year and willing to do every day. Tomorrow when the sun rises, theyll be here again protecting us. Thats something that cant be lost in this. Yeah, thank you for saying that. You just think about the duress that they have been under since january 6 and its Heart Breaking, the loss of life and added to that the individual who took his own life, officer livinggood and those that turned in their weapons and those that left the Capitol Hill Police because they were so despondent of what happened january 6 and the response and the performance which was so difficult under those conditions. We all want to remember them and think about them. Another life lost. Were waiting to find out who that hero is among the Capitol Hill Police. I hope you come back. We want to talk to you about the border and what youre working on there as well. Hope we can speak in the future, representative. Thanks. Sure. God bless. Martha you too. So lets go to Congressional Correspondent Jacqui Heinrich that just spoke to Capitol Hill Police. Jacqui, youve been on this story throughout the afternoon and told us the sad news that the Capitol Hill Police officer lost his life. What can you tell us now . The name of that officer is beginning to be shared among the other Capitol Police that are here. Its just a really somber feeling. You can tell this is someone that they work alongside, they put their lives on the line every day, feel tired of this. Seemed to be very despondent. I was told that they were offered resources to help them cope with yet another event that is going to shake that community and also time off, if necessary. You can see theres been a lot of investigators milling about the scene. We had an announcement going out saying the lockdown has been lifted. We just saw a large contingent of National Guard walking up to this area. Didnt look like anything urgent. They were trying to maybe relieve some people that had been up here hours ago. You can see theres a number of officials inside the rope looking at the vehicle and the scene and trying to determine what the motive was behind this. You know, it was when this happened this morning, i had come in through this door that is right below where im standing. It typically is open. It wasnt open this morning. The National Guard telling me that i had to walk to a different building to get inside. That stood out to me as odd. Obviously may not be connected to any of this, but it was Something Different that happened in my morning that preceded this. I was here and heard a bang. I didnt think twice about it. You hear camera cases being opened and closes in the rotunda all the time. We hear crashes and bangs all the time. So when that happened, i didnt think much about it until we heard the announcement and you could begin to hear sirens and choppers overhead. As we gathered on the balcony to see what was going on, officers screaming at us to get back inside and stay away. We were able to witness the aid that they tried to render to two people. It was one officer that i could see, the other person i couldnt see clearly. And before they moved them into the structures and took them away in ambulances. Its a somber and surreal scene for the officers that are still here this morning, were here this morning and still here. Just got off the phone with another person saying he was about 150 feet away when it happened and he cant believe what he saw. Just devastated. I think its going to be sinking in over the course of the day. As the name of the officer comes out, officially when the next of kin is notified, obviously they want to share they condolences. The persons name is creeping through the ranks and theyre hearing about who it was and talking about that person and very affected. Martha . You can tell the chief of the Capitol Police, acting chief, talked about the loss of her fellow officer, she was very moved as you would expect. But we as we said, were not going to share this name yet because you want to make sure that the Family Members, everybody has been notified and theres no rush in that. When we can, well share more details about this person that is a hero. Dan bongino said theres not a lot of professions in this world when you wake up, go to work and youre not sure that youll return safely at the end of the day given the nature of your work. Being a Police Officer is one of them. I think of officer talley that ran into the store in boulder, colorado. Lost his life. Seven children at home. Another Police Officer in there case, a Capitol Hill Police officer that will not go home to his family tonight. Its Heart Breaking. We all think of these Police Officers that have been through hell, basically, since january 6 trying to hold each other together doing their job. Today theyve been confronted with another horrific situation in this killing. Were waiting for more on the conditions of the Police Officer that is still in the hospital. We would like to get an update on his or her condition as well. Jacqui heinrich has been on this all afternoon for us directly from the capitol where she is. Thanks to jacqui as she stands by. We continue to cuevas this. I want to bring in now former Acting Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security, Ken Kuchenelli who is on the line. Thanks for being here. Your thoughts on this tragic event this afternoon. Well, im glad to be with you. Somber at the cost. You quoted dan bongino. Nobody that we ask to get up, put themselves between us and evil every day. A very dangerous place to be as we saw again today. My heart goes out to the family of the officer and the injured officer. Certainly we have someone that appears to be acting alone as the acting chief said. The officers responded what appears to be at first blush, as someone exits a vehicle with a knife aggressively, that is an immediate deadly force situation. Thats exactly what was used. Yeah. It appears in his case hi weapon was his car. There was a fairly large knife, a Kitchen Knife or machete that that was described. They need to piece together who this individual is. Right. Martha or was and what his motivation was at this point. One has to go into that mix. Obviously we want to keep the homeland safe, the capitol safe and the country safe. We need to see if there were any signals. Thats right. This person will be traced backwards in time, you know, name, cell phone and so forth. With the cell phone, as long as its on, they can obtain Cell Tower Information from whoever this persons provider is and trace them backwards. It does look like the kind of behavior that i would see out of a sole, lone, angry perhaps mentally ill actor. There does not look like part of any sort of a plan that youd expect to be perpetrated this way. If it had been, we would have seen other actions by now. So it is a question for the investigators and the Capitol Hill Police and others that will join them to trace this person backward, to tried to identify if theres anythings that was observable before, that we might prevent in the future. Obviously theres not going to be a trial because this person has been killed as part of this incident. Martha obviously this is a different situation, based on what we know now than january 6 in terms of who was involved and the motivation and all of that. Over the past couple weeks, some of the barricades have come down. Some of the people were happy to see the barbed wire removed. This will reignite how much protection, how much security is needed around this complex. Thats an interesting point. So lets look at what happened here. It was part of the standard protocols that have been in existence for years and years. With respect to the vehicle, they work. The positioning of the officers is something that well do a retrospective review of and im sure the Capitol Hill Police will as well. But this incident doesnt by itself suggest that the other security measures, you mentioned the National Guard. Weve seen them in the Video Footage from your correspondent there would have had any effect or particular relevance in this situation. This is something that they have been prepared for for years and years and years. Its not the first time someone has hit these barricades. Its the first time that i can remember when a capitol Police Officer was killed or injured at the same time as one of those incidents. Martha yeah, we saw the shooting back in i think 1998. A shoot out at capitol hill and then the incident that took the life of Brian Sicknick january 6. Ken, thanks very much. Former Homeland Security. Good to have you with us today, sir. Good to with with you. Martha thanks very much. All right. Were going to take you back to capitol hill. Mark meredith who has been closer to the scene and we know he came over from his white house perch to see what was going on here at capitol hill. What can you tell us now, mark . We have moved a little closer to where it happened. Really over my shoulder behind that ambulance there. That is where around 1 00 p. M. , the suspect tried to go after the two Police Officers, Capitol Hill Police officers. One of them as youve been regarding this hour passing away from his injuries. Stale waiting for an update on the condition of the second officer. The suspects dying. Were waiting for more details about motivation this may have been and in terms of what weve seen here, security at the capitol, as you imagine since january 6, a lot of things have changed to what your last guest was talking about, the barricades have been around a long time. You cant just walk up. Theres a few different road blocks in place. Theres some positioned outside of the capitol. Kind of i dont know. A half mile from where we are. And then those closer up to the Capitol Complex. Where this happened is outside the Senate Office buildings going to the capitol. The capitol is huge. Where this was is a man checkpoint. This is where you see Capitol Hill Police officers all day long. Ive walked through there christmas morning. Youll still see them there, capitol guarding 24 hours a day. One thing were waiting to find out, one of the indications that led up to the actual incident itself. Was this somebody circling the capitol or going after this specific checkpoint or a lastminute decision as he started to go in there. We have not gotten any identification on the suspect or the person that passed away. The Capitol Hill Polices job is to remember the fallen officer and do all they can for the one in the hospital. The flags will be flying at half staff at some point. Looking at the office buildings, the flags are at the current position. At some point theyll come down. Were hearing from a number of lawmakers weighing in with personal thoughts, prayers and support. We just got an email from chuck is schumer that is not at the capitol but saying he was heart broken by this. Thats something that members of congress will say. You can imagine the folks out here day and night, the staff out here, how shocking all of this is today. In terms of the actual crime scene itself, im amazed how close the national and International Media can get. A lot of this area was not accessible as of two weeks ago. Thats because of the fencing brought up around the Capitol Complex. They started to take that down. There was a call from lawmakers from both parties that said that they wanted to see some things in the capitol get back to normal. As to whether or not this will change anything, its yet to be seen. Theres been a lot of questions about what kind of security that needs to be beefed up. Theres calls for hearings. I would imagine for those constantly reviewing the Security Protocols here, that will be a big question that comes up. Also in terms of tributes, i havent seen anything come out yet. Youll see people drop off flowers, candles. Imagine that as the afternoon, the evening progresses, we may see that. This is really a company town. Washington is a place where a lot of people talk to everybody. I imagine for those, once we get the identification on the officer that was killed, it will hit too Close To Home for so many people here on capitol hill and elsewhere. Martha thanks, mark. Mark meredith on the scene at capitol hill this afternoon where a Capitol Hill Police officer has died after an altercation with a man wielding a knife. We believe that he drove his car in to these two officers and then became involved in an altercation with two officers. He came at them with the knife according to the Capitol Hill Police officers as well as metropolitan police. We want to bring back in here former d. C. Homicide detective ted williams as we watch all of this unfold here this afternoon. Ted, we can see the scene here where theyre continuing to gather evidence. Your thoughts as we move through the story today. One of the things that crossed my mind, theres lots of Video Footage that Law Enforcement is going to go through. Each one of those checkpoints, youll find theres video cameras. So they have the whole scene. They know what accurately took place there. What also is on my mind is that theyre also trying to put together a composite of this individual. They know who he is. Im sure they contacted his relatives and theyre talking to his friends and peers. They are doing a social media scrub. A lot that goes into that investigation. So the investigation will go on. Theres a question as to whether he was a lone wolf or were there others involved. Was there Anything Warning that he did prior to reaching the capitol there. A lot of questions that remain to be answered. Martha often in the past, weve seen people try to breach the white house grounds, the Capitol Grounds with some kind of message and intention that they have, something that theyre a grieved about. A message that they want to get through to members of congress or the president of the United States. Many times it does not end the way this ended. Its tragic. We dont know, as we said, what this individual was looking for or why they took their own life in their hands by putting themselves in this situation, taking the life of a Capitol Hill Police officer. So theres so many questions, ted as we look at this. As a Homicide Detective that has covered these cases a long time in washington d. C. , when you look at the layout of this area, is there greater protection that is needed or did this perimeter serve the way its supposed to . Were looking at this now. So much emotion, no doubt on the Capitol Hill Police officer and the metropolitan police. You can see them lined up around this area and what has to be a Heart Breaking afternoon for them. Its a very heartbreaking afternoon. They have lost one of their fellow officers, a person in blue that serves and protects the capitol. But in essence served this nation. So thats the tragedy. So theres a lot of emotions that goes in to the feelings of the officers all over the country now. But as you said, this security barrier, these inground beariers work. Whoever this person, once its identified, it will be determined that he was trying to get beyond the barriers. The barriers stopped him as well as the two officers that were involved that were injured as well as other Capitol Hill Police officers. I always say this about Law Enforcement. These two officers at this checkpoint stopped this individual from going into the capitol. Any other officers involved in this, martha, are heros in my whys. Theyre heros. Martha ted williams, thanks very much. Just going over the statement that came out after the News Conference. This came out at 3 29 from the u. S. Capitol police. It said at 1 00 p. M. , a man in a blue sedan rammed his vehicle into the North Barricade striking two u. S. Capitol Police Officers. The department locked down the capitol campus, the man exited the vehicle with a knife and ran toward our officers. One officer drew their weapon and shot the suspects. One u. S. Officer was transported by cruiser to the hospital. The second was transported by d. C. Fire and ems. The suspect was also transported by d. C. Fire and ems to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 1 30 p. M. The investigation is ongoing. These officers are standing vigil essentially outside of a hospital in d. C. If you know which hospital it is, let me know. Theres another officer that is being treated at this hour. We all pray for his or her wellbeing as medical professionals try to keep the Person Safe Of The Second Capitol Hill Police officer involved in this. Ted, thanks very much. I want to bring in attorney leo terrell who joins us this afternoon as well. Your thoughts on we cover this Breaking News this afternoon on capitol hill. Its sad. Good friday, a very sad day. Thanks for having me. The question youve been probing throughout the broadcast is the motive. The motive is so important. We wont find out today. I just dont want it to be politicized trying to make the analogy between what happened today and january 6. We need to know the motivation behind this individuals conduct. Because i would submit to you unfortunately, its going to be politicized. As everyone has stated, the officer dos their job 24 7 not knowing if they will come back home. Lets find out what happened. The investigation is ongoing. Witnesses, social media. What motivated this person to go in. That is the most pressing question for me as a lawyer, as a fact finder to find out. Yeah, typically, leo, youre absolutely right. Social media has provided the world with a living journal of peoples lives. People that have are grievances tend to weigh them out there. We dont know if thats the case in this case but thats one of the first stops to see what he or she has been writing or saying about what bothers them or what they think about different institutions and individuals. Thats all going to be comed through with a fine tooth comb, correct . Yes. Let me make this clear. All of these incidents have a pattern. People close to this suspect, they probably saw Warning Signs. But for some reason, i get it, Family Members dont tell on Family Members. It will be very, very sad if there were Warning Signs that were known to his inner circle that was not disclosed to authorities or people to give this man up. I hope thats not the case. It often is. Its something that we have to address. People that know information before these horrible things occurred. Very good point. Very hard to push the envelope with individuals. I think back again to the Boulder Shooting and the relative that we talked about being surprised, to see that individual have that gun and they didnt know where it came from. He was flailing it around in a family event six days before. Its very difficult for people to Say Something is about to happen. Its understandable, leo. If you see something, go back to that. Exactly right. A thin line between being surprised and being in denial. Thats that line that needs to sometimes that gets blurred. Martha so much to learn about this killing on this good friday of a Capitol Hill Police officer. The suspect dead in a tragic and deadly incident that has taken the lives of two people. The perpetrator as well as a Capitol Hill Police officer, another Police Officer is being treated at a d. C. Hospital at this hour. Were all hoping and praying that that individual can pull through. Leo terrell, thanks very much. Good to have you with us this afternoon on this good friday afternoon. 3 51 on the east coast right now. So switching gears for a moment after this. More than 180,000, that is the Border Patrols new estimate obtained by fox news today of how many children are coming here from mexico, honduras and guatemala this year. That is the projection for 2021. It would be the largest such of unaccompanied minors to the border ever. Its more than double what we saw in the Prior Administration back in 2019. So this is fox news has new images now of those two little girls that we watched hurled over the 14 foot border wall. Thankfully theres the little girls there today. They are safe and they are being taken care of. Theyre in custody right now. 3 and 5 years old. Imagine what is going through their minds as they think about their experience. Well keep you updated. Tomi lahren is most of no interruption on fox nation. She spent quite a bit of time in arizona getting information for us and doing ridealongs. Tomi, good to see you. Thanks for being with us. What did you learn today . Ive learned so much on this trip. Everybody is concentrating on texas right now and the Rio Grande Valley and the Processing Centers which are important but i want the people to understand what is happening in arizona. Thats a term called the gotaways. Theres an estimate of 48,000 in arizona alone of what are called gotaways. Its those that were not apprehended or arrested by Border Patrol, not processed, not fingerprinted. Those are folks that got away. Were going to see more and more of this as our Border Patrol resources are being taken up, Border Patrol has become baby sitters in the processing facilities. Youll see more and more individuals coming over. These are the worst of the worst. They dont want their fingerprints, theyre coming with criminal organizations, Smuggling Drugs and humans. This is what is coming in our country. Youre seeing the people being released, taken to the interior from the Processing Centers and not hearing about those that we dont know about that are already seeping into our country. Thats what terrifies me and the people of arizona most. Martha tomi, what are they telling you . This is an aerial shot of a section of the wall. It just got taken away. So yeah, theres a high center to that wall. The wall gets lower on either side of that area. So obviously theres so much that is porous. This is texas. Youre in arizona. What is the border there and how are these getaways getting in . Theyre getting in through areas that dont have border wall or fencing. Arizona is its own type of terrain. Of course, very remote areas. What i saw today that should enrage every american, theres pieces of trumps border wall sitting there. Theres equipment that is just sitting there because joe biden halted the construction of the border wall. Its been funded by sitting there. You have areas that have border wall thanks to donald trump and then you have areas that have been left porous. I spend time today with a rancher that says i have five miles of probability that has nothing on it but should because its already been funded by the taxpayer, this is what joe biden does. American last. Youll see it in the Processing Centers and the gotaways. This is in jeopardy because the democrats labelled open border. Martha so thats where we leave the story right now on this good friday afternoon. April 2, 2021. Happy easter. See you here monday. The suspect exited the vehicle with a knife in hand. Our officers engaged the suspect. He did not response to verbal commands. He lunged to Capitol Hill Police officers at which time u. S. Capitol police fired upon the suspect. Neil that suspect is dead. One Capitol Hill Police officer is dead. The other Capitol Hill Police officer still being
