When the Obama Administration pushed the transgender policy onto the military, against the wishes of the joint chiefs, one of the things that they did as they did force wide training, basically transgender training. It was a huge killer to morale because these men and women are signing up to do a mission, and to find out that the ideologues who are calling the shots from the top dont share that shame mission is just demoralizing. Rachel our government became so obsessed with being politically correct that no one ever stopped to think about what woke policies would do to our military. How would this kind of toxic Critical Race Theory deep in and antiamericanism affect our military standards and readines . Recruitment, and the level of patriotism that is required to be willing to die for your country . Did we study or debate what would happen if we trained our military to hate of their country, or believe it is systemically racist . The answer is no. These policies were simply handed down through Executive Orders and mandates within the dod civilian leadership. No president or senator ran on these policies or informed american citizens that this would become a permanent fixture of the new military culture. But guess what . It is. Tell us a little bit about what was uncovered and why you think this is so important to expose. Ive been studying Critical Race Theory in the military since last year when i found a west Point Military academy was teaching Critical Race Theory to cadets in one of their leadership courses, and i heard from dozens of soldiers that say the military is increasingly going woke, pushing the idea that there is a certain set of politics that you have to have in order to serve, that is almost indistinguishable from something you would see at a Social Justice seminar at evergreen state college. Rachel it is so interesting, youre saying the actual cadets and people in the military, they dont go along. And they wont get promoted, they are afraid there may be some professional repercussions. Yeah, that is exactly right. I think a lot of people that are in the soldier class are very patriotic, but what we are seeing is the professional classes within the United States, including the Military Brass, is increasingly becoming dominated by these leftwing ideologies, and you saw the story earlier this week of what Diversity Initiative leader who had been posting on his facebook page, comparing donald trump to adolf hitler. This stuff is surprising to most americans defined in the military, but increasingly, again, at that leadership level, the military, academia, corporate america, they are all being dominated by similar set of ideas that are fundamentally disruptive for our country. Rachel yeah, so youre getting these leaked documents and the secret information from soldiers who are afraid to probably say that to their superiors. Is there hope that if they get this information to you it will get into the public and there might be some kind of change within the military . I hope so, what we are seeing within the military as they are increasingly making these efforts programmatic, they are institutionalizing them with departments of diversity and inclusion that sound good, those are very nice, abstract, soft words, but in practice, these are new political offices. In soviet times and Chinese Communist times, they had what were called commissars and bedded it military to enforce ideological purity and what we are seeing in the military ty is something not as extreme, but it is similar in they are trying to push these initiatives that is institutionally as possible, and if we dont reverse course, if we do not draw a hard line, that puts patriotism first. Im afraid these things will continue to expand. Rachel what you make of this standdown, what is it all about . Well, on the surface level, i think theres something good about it. We do not want extremism, either the right or the left, in the United States military. Something that is happened in the past. I think it is a signal to soldiers that there is a new dog in town, there is a new boss that is running the show, and you have to basically genuflect or bow down to this new ideology. And if you are openly displaying some support for conservative causes, if you are openly displaying support for former President Trump, that is going to cause you trouble with the Military Brass, and i think it is really a way to flex the new administrations power and to enforce their political priorities among the u. S. Military. Rachel well, the Additional Reading list when i talk about extremism only talk about white supremacy, there is no reference to antifa or blm or any other extremist group. Its worry some im going to try to get to the bottom to see if our brass and the civilian leaders in the pentagon are actually going to force our troops to read this racist nonsense. Critical race theory is the false and the odious theory that america is fundamentally racist to its core, that concepts like the rule of law and equality under the law enshrined in the Declaration Of Independence and the constitution are somehow just a sham for our racist nation. Nothing could be farther from the truth, and we should not teach our young troops this kind of nonsense. Thats why my legislation would prohibit it from being part of any formal training curriculum, prohibit universities, the Service Academies from teaching it, and prohibit it from being forced upon our troops in any ways. Rachel have you seen any support from the other side of the aisle for your legislation . [laughs] lets just say they dont like to get within 10 feet of this controversy, because so much of the leftwing activism is about open racist discrimination, about forcing, or about saying we have to have discrimination on the basis of race in this country to have equality. Its a pretty orwellian theory. But im going to offer it in a couple months when we get to writing our annual defense bill, we will have a vote on it and see with the democrats think about it. Whether or not we should teach our troops to respect the constitution and the declaration, and to fight sidebyside with each other as comrades in arms, willing to lay down their lives, not just for our country, but for each other, irrespective of race. That is the way it was when i was in the army. That is the way it should be for our troops today. Rachel you wrote an excellent piece in national review. We need to teach our young troops as it was taught by sergeants and officers of many different races to be friends, fight alongside, and in necessary, die for their comrades on the battlefield, not to obsess about skin color. Likewise, we need to teach them to revere the constitution, they swore to protect and defend, not to believe it is part of a multigenerational, racist conspiracy. Your bill actually calls for not allowing the military to segregate our troops by race. I just cant even believe that that is necessary to put in a bill. Is not happening . I hope its not happening, rachel, but anywhere you see critical race on campuses or enroll corporations, you see that kind of segregation, following, oftentimes, not very far behind. But it is not something that we should ever permit in our military. Again, our military is the most Important Institution in our society. Of some corporation wants to go bankrupt because they are obsessing about race or some college is indoctrinating its students, that is not a good thing, but those Institutions Ae not dedicated to keeping the United States free and independent from our enemies. Rachel its just really hard for me to believe that generals would go for this, because why would you die for a country that you think is systemically racist . Why would you die for a comrade, your fellow soldier, that you think might be racist . It doesnt make sense to me why they are not trying to just bring us together as americans and stop this division. Well, thats a pretty good question, rachel. Id say all of our generals are great americans. They are patriotic. They have served their country. They know a lot about training, many of them, not all of them, but many of them know a lot about winning wars. But when it comes to history and politics, too often our generals just reflect the kind of leftwing fads and fashions that you see in americas universities or that they got when they were a fellow at the council of Foreign Relations as a young major. Rachel yeah, you see a lot of young people coming in, probably already indoctrinated in high school and then college and then they go to west point and are getting more of this instead of learning a different way to love america, so listen, i think it is really important that we keep talking about this, senator. Rachel i just cant imagine i know we do this all the time, what if trump still, regardless of the fact we know this would not play out the same way with the media if it had been trump, if he had not gone down to see what was happening to these kids, i mean, they still should be coming down to see what is happening at the border, what is happening to these children, what is happening to border communities. How are they getting away with it, and do you think we are going to reach a point where it is just so bad that they actually start to get some political blowback for this . I think that they are already at that point. In fact, i think there are number of democrats in congress who are raising the alarm bells, you know, basically saying this is the kind of thing that could lead to us losing the house in the midterms, having negative ramifications for us. Look, we already know, based on the last election, that President Trump and another of republicans already did enormously well among hispanic voters, particularly workingclass and middleclass voters, across the country, regardless of where they come from originally, and part of that, i believe, is that he prioritized the border. He prioritized law and order, as opposed to conceding this entire argument to the left and everything that they want to achieve in terms of Critical Race Theory and the like. Which is, frankly, something that appeals to white upperclass voters, to wealthy white voters, but doesnt actually appeal to hispanic voters, to africanamerican voters, and the like. This is a huge issue. Its a huge problem. And unfortunately, i think in the case of the Biden Administration, they are much more willing to play politics in this area, as opposed to actually addressing the real problem because the mediahe medl let them get away with it. Rachel yeah, i mean, that is the question i was going to ask you. Do you think at some point as you said, you think they are feeling the heat, do you think they would ever consider reversing any of these policies . No matter what they say, it is so obvious to the American People that they caused this by reversing policies that were working in the last administrations. It is an obvious failure, rachel, but unfortunately, i think the Identity Politics of the left has reached such a fever pitch that they are unwilling to go back in any respect, and this turns into some conversation about, oh, well, lets talk about the root causes of this, as if it is Climate Change or Income Inequality rachel aoc said that, she said they were climate refugees. This case is so much bigger than what happens ten months ago. Derek chauvin is on trial, for sure, but for many americans, this nation is on trial, or criminal Justice System is on trial. This is about blackandwhite. This is about justice for people who arent specifically involved in this case. This is about justice for eric garner and Breonna Taylor and daniel prude, on and on, the calmest black People Killed in this country with very little repercussions. I watch that clip, and it intrigues me, because i am so concerned about cases that are very high profile like this, racial undertones, and you are a lawyer, what do you make of that . Because we want to make sure people are presumed innocent, and also, you should be tried for the circumstances in your case, not other cases. And every one of the cases that she mentioned had very, very factspecific situations, and they should, and each officer should be judged on their own merits about the actions they took in each one of those cases. And many of them do end up going to trial, like this one. This is a very raw, emotional issue for the country in this moment, and anybody who has watched the george floyd tape, it is horrifying. No one wants to see another human being suffering or dying. But when you go into a courtroom, and this is me as a lawyer now, what happens is there are rules that are meant to take the emotion out of this. Judges are supposed to do that. There are rules of evidence, procedure, and we ask jurors to do a very difficult thing, which is to look at the evidence and make a judgment. At the core of all of that is the issue you touch on which is due process. We all as americans should want that for our best friend, for our worst enemy. We may need it ourselves one day. We have to trust that the system, when all of this evidence is brought in, we are hearing from witness after witness right now for the prosecution, being cross examined, we have to trust those jurors to make a good decision. They have several counts in front of them that they can decide about this former police officer, but it is unfair to put on those jurors the weight of this entire issue. We think there needs to be criminal Justice Reform and our system is not perfect, but i happen to think it is the best in the world, there is always room for improvement, but we cannot expect these jurors to solve all the problems in this case. Rachel absolutely. For those who have not following the case closely, why dont you break down the latest that is going on . We are in the Prosecution Phase right now, so you are hearing from witnesses who were there on the scene, people who took some of those videos. Paramedics who showed up also testified today. We heard from an offduty firefighter who was also an emt, who said she wanted to intercede at one point. We also heard from George Floyds girlfriend, who talked very emotionally about him. There is some crossexamination going on, but we have to remember this is the first phase, this is the prosecution. The defense will also have its opportunity at some point down the line. They are raising their objections as a defense team would do, but what you are here and right now is very emotional because you are hearing from people who were on the scene, and we have heard from witnesses who said i wish i had done more. There is also a witness we found out today is not going to testify. He was somebody who was in the car with george floyd when officers were there. He is going to take the fifth. So a lot of developments in this fastmoving trial at this point. Rachel im going to switch gears with you because you have a new book coming out called women of the bible speak. It is holy week after all, and we think of easter which is upon us, and it was women that showed up first. Why do you think that is the case . Why dont you give us your thoughts on that . You know, i love this because Mary Magdalene who had been part of jesus inner circle, he did not obey the norms of the day, women were close to him, friends, studied with him, those are not the normal ways or the rules of the day, but when she went to the tomb the way of his resurrection, she was overcome and distraught that his body wasnt there. One of the most moving things about this moment is that i have been in touch with conservative moms like moms for liberty in florida, and progressive moms like jennifer say, the gymnast hero in california who left to take her childnd all of these moms are united, far above anything that might divide us in partisan politics because we are worried about our kids. I have a 9yearold stepson. I have a stepdaughter. I have two children, biologically, and i am horrified that this nonsensical lockdown, which is not based on science, has led to skyrocketing Mental Health problems, depression, self harming, among children and young adults, and our kids have lost a year of school, if they go to public school, in many parts of the country. Its absolutely catastrophic. Theres a new study out from south korea that documents the many harms to our children, developmentally, Wearing Masks in school, which again, doesnt have any science to support it, so there is a war on our children, that is really happening. Rachel theres a lot of irrational i find that College Campuses are the places with the most restrictions, and we know between the ages of 18 to, you know, 29, your chances are below 1 . And yet, they created this Snitch Culture On Campus where students are snitching on each other, they are snitching on their professors if they say the wrong thing about covid. They have a website called the cloud, correct . Yes. Rachel where you talked to a professor turned in by student. What do you make of this . Well, its really terrifying. My book The End Of America looked at times and places in history where tyrants on the left were on the right wanted to close democracies and open societies, and they always do the same ten things, and we are seeing some of those totalitarian, Chinese Communist party style methodologies, directed at young adults and at the academy, in every part of civic life right now. I do have a colleague, a really distinguished professor on the left, he wrote a bunch of incredibly important books, and he was targeted, both by a student of his, and by his colleagues, and by his administration, according to his description to me, because he encouraged his students to think about covid related propaganda in a class on propaganda. He asked them to think critically, to explore both sides, and he also, you know, challenged someone who said a book that had no reference to race was an example of white supremacy. He put it in a larger historical context. So, this is a terrifying i may or may not agree with him about everything he had to say, he may not agree with me, but the beautiful thing about our society, rachel, is that we are allowed to have freedom of speech, First Amendment rights, open debate, especially in the classroom, and when that is gone, we are really, you know, blooming the next generation to be subject to its totalitarian regimes, not america at all. One of those studies looked at large disparities in covid deaths between various countries. In the u. S. , we have had over 1600 deaths per million inhabitants. Italy has had 1800. But each have had 116. Nigeria under ten. There were many possible factors. Countries younger populations, primed Immune Systems for covid, but there are other explanations for these disparities. One of them was obesity. Nigeria and egypt have far lest obesity in the u. S. Nearly 80 of people hospitalized with the virus in the u. S. Were overweight or obese, according to the cdc. And with more than 42 of our total population being obese, thats a pretty important number. Lets talk about the leadership during the pandemic. How do you assess it . I think one of the biggest problems that i saw during the whole pandemic, the way it unfolded, as a leader, you have to realize that you dont know everything, and if you make a guess about what direction you should had it and it turns out that your guess was wrong, you need to be able to adjust and try something new. I saw, really, both sides of the aisle that committed to some sort of theory, and then stayed on that path, even after we knew that theory was no longer correct. Rachel right, and studies have come out about obesity, has really only happened the last couple months, and im wondering come all summer along when we were locked inside, they knew these numbers, its not rocket science, right . It makes sense, even looking at the country, and looking at the obesity rates. Why do you think we didnt hear about why didnt they tell us to get outside and use this as, they talked about the great reset, this could have been the great health reset for america. Yeah, again, i think people got locked onto this idea that what we need to do is stay away from each other, what we need to do is not go out and not be in groups, and they locked onto that idea so tightly that when we started to realize, oh, there is actually another solution that we should probably move in the direction of, but egos didnt allow that, and people just continued to say what we need to do is stay apart and stay inside. Obviously, its not good on a multitude of fronts. Rachel right. Its not too late, right, because we could have another pandemic. We dont know. Our border is open right now and there is another covid strain coming up from brazil. How do you think americans should prepare right now . You talk about personal responsibility in health and fitness, give your best advice to america to prepare for the next pandemic. I would say its really obvious, like you said get healthy. Go out, exercise, eat good food, be on a good diet, and get outside, and get healthy. Thats it. Pretty straightforward. Rachel it is pretty straightforward. Our government spent so much money on obesity campaigns. I think they ought to just provide a link to your, you know, podcast, and maybe everyone would just get fit. It would be a lot cheaper, right . [laughs] definitely. It all starts with discipline. Everyone wants some kind of a magic pill, some kind of vaccine thats going to save them. You need to rely on yourself to save yourself. Imposed discipline in your life, start eating right and exercising, your whole world will improve if you follow that. Rachel right. It is about spreading happiness, and we want to show the world what people with different abilities can do. We want to show what your baby, valentino, can grow up to do. What other things do you think you might take up next, in bringing the country together . Well, first, we have to make sure those socks get into the hands of the members of congress. Rachel right. But we have already received invitations to bring them to state houses, and what john and i may do is travel the country. Rachel yes. Go to every state house and hand these out and say come on, people. We can get along. Right. We have to Work Together for the benefit of the country. No more fighting.
