A lot of questions about when the Vice President will make this trip down south. Now that shes formally the administrations point person for what is happening down there. The white house making it clear today that when she does make that trip, her first stop will likely be to one of the northern triangle countries because her top priority is on diplomacy with the country addressing the root causes of mygation and overseeing the flow of u. S. Aid to those countries. When pressed about this point, about the Vice President s travel earlier today, the press secretary said this. I dont have an update on her travel but since you gave me the opportunity its important to understand and know that she focused on addressing root causes in the region. So travel i expect would be there. This surge in unaccompanied children is expected to last for seven months according to u. S. Customs and border protection. Its so bad, the Biden Administration is asking for civilian federal employees to volunteer for deployment of up to 120 days. Heres republican senator tom cotton that got back from the border last week. Asking federal employees to deploy to the border addressing the symptoms, not the cause. The cause is joe biden opening the border and saying anyone that comes here can get in, especially anyone with a child under the age of 18. Guess what you get . Tens of thousands, Hundreds Of Thousands more of them. People showing up with young kids. Former President Trump said over the weekend that he plans to visit the border sometime in the next couple weeks. Still no word on when President Biden plans to make his first trip. Charles . Charles kristin, thanks very much. Now to someone in the thick of it, Cochise County Sheriff joins me now. From your perspective, sheriff, what should the white house be doing right now . Good afternoon, charles. First of all, we need to accept responsibility. That is the first thing. Were down here at the local level, state levels dealing with the impact of a plan that we havent been privileged to. What i see is avoidance, denied, no more collaboration, no transparency. No one is listening. I can tell you who is listening down here, the communities. We have to. Were dealing with the minors and the Public Safety aspect of it. Charles and a lot of this crisis has been centered on Unaccompanied Minors, a report from the Wall Street Journal that the number of minors could jump to 22,000 in april, this is from 16,000 this month and up to 25,000 in may. Put in perspective just how concerning those numbers are . Already considering how crowded facilities are and how damaging some of the images weve seen are. Charles, its alarming. In 2019 we had 2,000 coming to the southwest border. Were on record to beat that record. What is frustrating down here, we hear the impact of this surge. Im not talking about the Public Safety aspect of this, the Community Safety aspect. Nobody is talking to us. Nobody is talking to sheriffs, the governors on the border, our state legislative folks. Its like we dont exist. Charles sheriff, the debate has gone back and forth now particularly since the press Conference Last Week on what is drawing this surge. You know, the media has put it into perspective that, you know, a kind, gentler president is out there and sort of a siren call. This is a humanitarian thing welcoming these Unaccompanied Minors with open arms. Nobody is talking about the trek itself. How you transverse several countries to get here particularly at these ages . Shouldnt we focus on some true humanitarian way of solving this . Because it seems to me by the time they get here, theres a lot of scarring, physical and mental. Charles, wellstated. Youre right. When they make this 1,000 mile trip from the northern triangle through mexico to find the promise land. I understand that. Its inhumane. President biden says yes, im a nice guy. But theres no consequences. The teens, weve seen it on the border, they come across with some form of Birth Control because they know theyll be sexually assaulted all the way up. Weve had that already in the southwest border numerous times. The cartel, we forget about the cartel in this message. The cartel is involved with the Smuggling Efforts to get them to the border to include the inhumane treatment. We need to get to the root of the problem. Organized criminal association called our criminal cartels that are truly the benefactor of all of these problems. Charles speaking of which, i read where sierra vista, your neck of the woods, youre seeing drug and human smuggling. Youre seeing a sharp uptick in both . We are. We went for 20 months based on our local collaborative efforts of the state and local partners to keep drugs out of our county. We went 20 months without any drug smuggling charms. The last few months, we have had up to 40 Drug Smugglers on our system. In my county, title 42, if we catch you, well still expel you. Thats why you see such a vulnerability to my Law Enforcement officers in the county. Theyre all camouflaged, cartel driven. Theyll do whatever it takes to harm us to get away from us compared to texas where theyre not being expelled because the state of texas and mexico will not accept them anymore. In opening statements, charles, the prosecution tried to portray Derek Chauvin as an Out Of Control killer who defied his oath to serve, protect and take care of people in his position. The prosecutor asked the jury to Convict Chauvin on all three charges, Second Degree murder and Second Degree manslaughter and third degree murder. The prosecutor said chauvin should not have placed floyd in a prone position longer than a couple minutes, not nine minutes. The video is hard to watch as floyd gasped for air. Bystanders were screaming for police to get off of his neck. Floyd did not die of an overdose. That he battled a Drug Problems for years and built a tolerance. His behavior was not consistent with someone to overdosing. The defense said that floyd took drugs and resisted arrest. You hear him saying, tell my kids i love them. You will hear him say about his fear of dying. He said ill probably die this way. Im through, im through. Theyre going to kill me. What was mr. Floyds actual cause of death . The evidence will show that mr. Floyd died of a cardiac arrhythmia, the ingestion of methamphetamine. The very first witness is a 911 dispatcher that sent police to the floyd seen. She was distraught of what she saw that he called the sergeant and said you can call me a snitch if you want but you should check in on this situation. Charles matt, thanks very much. To the storys Martha Maccallum who has been going in depth on this. What is your reaction to the proceedings today . Martha you know, i thought it was interesting watching judge cahill lay out the instructions to the jury, how theyre instructed to listen to only to what theyre hearing in the courtroom. Its a much more finite sense of circumstances. Theres the world of whats going on in the courtroom and then the reaction to it. The battening down of the hatches here in minneapolis as they fear they might see themselves in another volatile situation. Its tough for the city ever since this happened to George Floyd Last year. You have the autonomous zone around the scene of the video that we watched and it was difficult to watch that video again as it played out in the courtroom today. Really it comes down to the medical evidence in this case based on what were hearing from attorneys watching it closely and the cause of death. Then you have separately in many ways the actual actions of the former police officer, Derek Chauvin, and whether or not his knee on George Floyds neck was the cause of death and b, whether or not it was provide your that is sanctioned by the Minneapolis Police department. Youll hear a lot about the rules and training of the Police Officers. Charles i know you spoke with former d. C. Detective ted williams about the chaos that followed George Floyds killing. I want to go into that conversation now. Lets share a piece of it with the audience. This is the third precinct. Right after George Floyds killing, this building was abandoned by all of the Police Officers who worked there. The rioters were outside of this building. You can still see it boarded up. When i see the building, it brings back shocking memories after floyd was killed. The citizens lost out and the crooks in this community took over. The Police Officers in droves driving away from the building, abandoning a police station. People were throwing things at their cars, firecrackers, yelling at them. Not only that, they were going in the building, the crooks and opening File Cabinets and throwing things on the floor. It was watered down. I had been in Law Enforcement for well over 40 years. I have never seen anything like this. Charles martha, im sure you talked about the aura there, the tension that you can fill. A lot of it you trace back to scenes like that. Martha you know, theres a level, charles of anarchy in certain neighborhoods in minneapolis. You can sense it. They developed Text Message Groups in their neighborhood to protect themselves. You have a city council that said that they wanted to defund and dismantle the police. It worked. They had a ton of police that left. They felt they didnt have the backing of the city anymore. It leaves people in a difficult situation where people feel like they have to defend their businesses and livelihoods. You cant call 911 for help. You remember lisa bender of the city council. Thinking when you call 911 for help is an element of white privilege. You assume that someone comes to help you. It appears that that no longer exists in minneapolis, that assumption of help is gone. If they have alternative proposals for how to invest in paying for or infrastructure, rebuilding roads and railways and putting americans back to work, were happy to hear it. The white house says they will listen to other ideas once they put forth their plan on how to pay for this. The white house made it clear today as they have been in the days Going Forward that the president has been talking about and likes the idea of Raising Taxes in some cases. When democrats put this forward, theres going to be a fine line as we know here in washington, charles. Because even if a handful in the house or so dont like this, house democrats, the white house over here could have some trouble on its hands, charles. Charles thanks, blake. So if some democrats are starting to get nervous about all of this spending, should you be as well . You know, the moderate dems are saying, lets slow this down a little bit. Well, charles, we have authorized 5 trillion in spending. Also spent 2 trillion. That means theres 3 trillion in the either need to be spend. Some will question whether we need to spend 2 trillion more. Last year in illinois, a democrat governor proposed a tax increase only on the top 3 earning households. Guess what . Voters voted it down. They hear tax increase and they know its not the top end. Eventually it impacts everybody and it may not be popular. Charles jessica, the infrastructure sounds wonderful. One of those things that is bipartisan. Everyone should get behind it. Some democrats are also saying, if we consider this an investment, shouldnt be any tax creases with it at all. Thats a very small group of democrats generally speaking. We have talked about tax increases. This is something that donald trump ran on in 2016 saying the megarich arent paying their fair share. He sounded more like Bernie Sanders than a traditional republican there. But liz is correct. Theres been initiatives in liberalleaning states where people said we dont want to see tax increases. Moderate democrats like joe manchin and Kristin Sinema hold the keys to the capitol. So well see what happens with the salt negotiations. Chuck schumer is upset of that. Wants to get rid of the cap. How far joe biden can go. I do find it a little hypocritical to hear about that we cant raise the corporate rates to 28 . It was 35 under bill clinton. The personal rate was 29 . And democrats and republicans were happy about that and talk about that as a huge economic boon for the country. So we can raise taxes above where they are and still succeed. Charles steve moore . Well, a lot of things. First of all, this day and age, the term moderate democrat is a oxymoron. Even the two senators that you just mentioned just voted for a 1. 9 trillion outrageous Spending Bill that isnt necessary. They said were not going to vote for it and they did. Bill clinton was a fiscally conservative president. We saw Government Spending fall from 22 to 18 of gdp under bill clinton. The leanest government in probably 40 years and the economy boomed. Maybe that tells us Big Government is not the solution, that we need the opposite. The tax increase will do significant damage. One last things, charles. The we had this debate three or four years ago. Liberals said it wouldnt work. We did the experiments, we had the science. Now we have the evidence that that worked. We had record job creation, record low poverty, record low unemployed. Charles liz, ill let you jump in. But were running out of time. I want your take also that whatever lawmakers or other people feel, it seems like the market doesnt like all of this money printing. The dow closing at another record high today. Id say also, were going to a green new world and we want American Companies to compete. These are not industries that are strong. We need a lower tax rate to encourage u. S. Workers cant be forced to pay up as a condition of employment. All eyes are on alabama, charles, after the deadline today, the Ballot Counting gets underway tomorrow. Bernie sanders and marco rubio cant agree on what day of the week it is and here they are rooting for labor. So labor has a lot going for them, which means if they dont succeed, might be the last nail in labors coffin. Charles so that point, theyve had a lot of nails in there already. What i find interesting also is that you already have 28 states that have decided with their own voters that theyll be right to work states including alabama. Feels like this is an effort to usurp the will of the voters. Am i right here . Right to work means if your work force is unionized, you dont have to pay dues. Its a nice option. You can unionize. You dont have to pay the dues if you dont want to. Its tougher on the union, which is why the stakes are so high. Charles if this is successful, its a nationwide push for 1. 4 million workers or Something Like that, arent our costs as consumers going to go up significantly . Oh, yeah. This will ripple through. This may seem like a small pebble. The ripples will be back. Amazon is on its way to moving beyond walmart and being the largest employer in the United States. Right now they have about 800,000 employers. Your figure is worldwide. Heres the thing. They open up a warehouse every single day. They are massive. So their footprint in a community is huge. In fact, there was a study done that shows what happens to labor wages in communities when amazon moves in. Officials say three of the victims that drowned after a nearby creeked flooded, another killed after he got out of a car and swept away by rushing flood waters. That is certainly what weve seen from communities here in georgia, alabama, mississippi, tennessee, people have been rushing in to help their neighbors, giving them the support that they need to get through. China, the curtain has been pulled back on their repressive tactics. The reason theyre lashing out, theyre trying to protect their global brand. These companies have no problems voicing their Social Justice opinion when it comes to america. Do you think theyll hold the line with the religious minority in china who are being persecuted and punished and crushed quite frankly and the world is watching. Do you think nike and others will hold the line . Its interesting to see if they can hold the line on their hypocrisy. Theyre Social Justice warriors here in the United States, lecturing everybody else. When it comes to china, theyre profiting, in particular the uighur people. Theres forced labor. Evidence to suggest the labor is in the supply line for many American Companies. Lets not lose the fact, charles, theres many other people in china being repressed and persecuted.
