The Supreme Court hearing arguments today over an Arizona Election law that says voters must cast their votes in person at the proper precinct. It also limits who may deliver someones ballot to the polling place. There was conservative skepticism about rolling back voting restrictions. Doesnt matter that harvests hasnt resulted in fraud in arizona. How many elections does it need to affect . To be clear, arizona already has allow prohibiting fraudulent ballot collection. What this law does is criminalizes neighbors helping neighbors deliver ballots. I spoke with a founder of a group Making Voting more convenient. Were concerned that that those laws is creaing making it more difficult for voters. In 2020, there was good communication for those to vote by mail, et cetera. Republicans focused on winning control of Legislatures To Craft Election Laws and handle redistricting. Democrats have favored going to court, a Key Senate Republican says voters must have confidence in our elections. We need to create a process that people can get out the vote but we also have a process where theres no fraud. Several of the conservative justs noted that these kind of Election Laws may be needed to reduce or block voter fraud. Fresh off the 2020 election, this is a red hot issue before the Supreme Court. By the way, theres no way we lost georgia. Theres no way. The rigged that was a rigged election. Were still fighting. Youll see whats going to happen. Two days later, purdue and loeffler lost their races and rioters stormed the United States capitol. Now in his first interview since the runoff, david purdue. Thanks for being with us, senator. Hi, martha. Martha the word was that after the runoffs that senator Mitch Mcconnell was furious with President Trump. He felt that he had made that night too much about doubting election voracity and security and that that had hurt you and Kelly Loeffler with voters in north georgia. Do you agree with mcconnell on that . We had significant irregularities in the election that may have affected the outcome. But what i think we saw happen in georgia are two things. In november, 52 voted against the democratic agenda and my democratic opponent. Over 5 Million People voted that proves the more people that vote in georgia the better it is for republicans. In the runoff because a lot of people felt like their vote was compromised did not come back out and vote. President trump wasnt able to get many of his supporters to come back out. You could hear from the response from that comment how a lot of people felt about that. So what the state is trying to do is correct some of these potential irregularities and create a level Playing Field for all voters and make it easier to vote, harder to cheat and give everybody equal access to their constitutional right. Martha so you were in quarantine that night. You couldnt be at the rally. As you watched it in real time, were you afraid that was what was happening, that the president s words would hurt you, the voters were going to stay home based on what he said at that rally . They made a conclusion without President Trump said. That happened weeks before. We saw that in our own data, that a lot of Republican Voters were having difficulty coming back out to vote. We had democrat lawyers who said they were friends of the president claim that they should boycott the election, et cetera. And many people did. The democrats brought their vote back out in the runoff and it was hard to get our Republican Trump base back out in january. What the state is now trying to do and i want to comment on something. This idea of Voter Suppression. Georgia has been a poster child for that. Democrats used georgia and they claim the 2018 governor race that we had Voter Suppression. Nothing is further from the truth. In November Of 2020 when we had five million vote, we had so many ways that advantaged democratic counties in 2020. They want to level the Playing Field now. When we had that then, even in my race, i won by two points. So just shows that when more people vote, the better it is in georgia anyway for republican conservative voters. Martha heres your former colleague, senator Chuck Schumer talking about in new bill in georgia that would put more restrictions on early voting and take away election oversight from the Secretary Of State that got a lot of attention during your election. Heres senator schumer. May be the most pernicious of all, the republicans in georgia have coalesced around a plan to end all early voting on sundays, a day when black churches organize voter drives with no good reason given. Martha is there a good reason for that, senator . Look, theres no problem with voting on sunday. We want every single county to have the save privilege. That didnt happen in georgia and hasnt happened. That was negotiated with our state leaders. All were saying in georgia and im working with the state house and the state senate that both have bills before themselves right now that would create a more level Playing Field. We had outside people giving grants to the rich counties in georgia to have mobile voting booths. Buses going through neighborhoods with booths inside a truck. So what we want is to have if you want to vote sunday, fine. Let every county have the same access to that. That didnt happen here. So let me tell you what the bigger thing is going on here with Chuck Schumer. That is this. You see biden coming in to office. The first thing they do like most president s, they use Executive Order to get things done and move to reconciliation. You hear that talked about in the budget and the Spending Bill and then looking at hr1. Theyre talking about it. You talked about it already. Why is that so important to them . Its a national Voting Rights act that will absolutely clear the field for all of these democraticleaning imbalances that we saw in georgia. The imbalances here in georgia were from rich counties to poor counties, urban counties, rural counties. We saw an Absolute Unlevel Playing Field in terms of access to voting. In fact, we saw the republican side, if you want to talk about Voter Suppression, we have sworn affidavits before a court where republicans were denied the right to vote. So the issue here is not a conspiracy. Its just hard evidence. Let me give you one data point. In dekalb county, the largest democratic turnout in georgia. Nine Absentee Ballots were denied automatic of 900,000. Only nine were denied because of improper signature. In Fulton County 38. The probability of happening is 1 in 10,000. Martha a couple quick questions here before i let you go. You said you were registering to possibly run in 2022. In days you said youre not running. Why was that, sir . The images reflect the time in which the books were written, in the 20s and the 30s. I am not offended by those pictures because it talks about the evolution of this country and how we are now. What those books reflected was a sign of the times. You cannot ignore history. You cannot eliminate history. Theres worst pictures than that. But taking in context, those that want to cancel these books, those that think those books are racist, show me the media harm to victims today, martha. They cant. They use the argument of racist as a gimmick, a Talking Point to basically cancel people out. I think its wrong as a teacher, i think its wrong as a lawyer because unconstitutionally that is telling people that they cant read certain books in libraries and if the government imposed these restrictions, its horrific. Sheriff Sergeant Steve owen that was shot and killed Execution Style in 2016 is furious the suspected killer may not face justice. Tonya owens joins me now. Thanks for being with us today. Thank you for having me. Martha explain how your husband was shot and killed. What happened . A 911 call came in to the lancaster sheriffs station for a burglary in progress. The individuals that called were in the Upstairs Area of the home. They said that they heard some type of glass breaking and they could hear someone downstairs. So my husband was the first officer to respond to that call. As they were giving him updates, that were coming in from the callers, as my husband was approaching the area, he saw a male running away from the home and quickly gave the description to the other responding units. He then went in to an apartment complex, which only has one way in and one way out. As he entered the complex, he put out over the radio that he would be detaining the individual at gun point. My husband was working a oneman car. As it is accustomed, we go ahead and put out a transmission of what were doing before we stop. Because we have to multitask. Obviously our goal is to quickly get out of our police car and detain someone. So he put that information out. As soon as he stepped out, there was possibly eight to nine seconds of Radio Silence at which point our dispatcher asked for his status. There was no response. Martha the killer, as i understand it, turn around and shot him and came back and leaned over him and shot your husband in the face. Is that right . Actually, believe it or not, a lot of this talking, a lot lately about cops shooting suspects in the back. Believe it or not, this individual that was shot my husband was given his back when he shot him. The first shot hit my husband in the forehead, which completely disabled him. The suspect then instead of running away, which he clearly could have done without a doubt, walked up to my husband, stood over him and shot him three more times on the face. Then he paused and shot him on the badge. The bullet was deflected by his badge, which to me as a Law Enforcement officer, hes clearly trying to send a message to Law Enforcement that he doesnt care who we are and hes going to do whatever he feels like. Gascon says that most victims, theres pain and trauma losing a loved one. Most victims dont want the maximum penalty. Some do. Most survivors dont find healing by puts another person in a cage. What do you say about that . Ive yet to find a individual or victim who would agree with what he said. Let me make one thing clear. The one thing that we as victims want and i talked to a slew of them and i was a Law Enforcement officer for 32 years. I handled cases where i had a lot of victims throughout those years.
