Rolling hills estates. The grade he was coming down is fairly steep. Includes a sweeping lefthand turn. And then a bending righthand turn. Sources tell the Los Angeles Times that the genesis s. U. V. Tiger was driving was at a high rate of speed and that tiger apparently lost control before he struck the Center Median. He then hit a sign from Rolling Hills hit the sign crossed opposing traffic and rolled at least once, maybe more, barely missing a Telephone Pole and ending up on the embankment, now, firefighters say when they found him, roughly 6 minutes after the crash, he was conscious and talking and they said, quoting here, because of the situation and the way that you found the vehicle, he wasnt able to open the door and come out. Back to you. Tiger woods, joining other members of the executive command staff. Also joining us here today is l. A. County fire chief. Now i would like to introduce the sheriff of Los Angeles County alex villa nueva. Thank you, captain. Today at 7 12 in the morning, we received a call of a solo Vehicle Collision in Hawthorne Boulevard north of palos verdes drive. We arrived on scene at 7 18 00 a. M. And discovered a solo Vehicle Collision in the solar argument was, again, tiger woods, and deputies, at the time, they did not see any evidence of impairment, anything of concern, obviously lifesaving measures had to be taken for the occupant of the vehicle. And the chief will speak to that regard. It was a solo vehicle, unfortunately, during the course of the investigation, there was another investigation that happened with vehicles, lookieloos. No injuries associate with that. At the intersection, rested on the west side of the road in the brush, sustained major damage, the vehicle, if seen the damage to that, with that, we will be conducting the Traffic Investigation and it will take days or several weeks to get the whole thing together. Once the investigation is completed, we will provide a detailed report, it will be available, you know, at request, and we will not discuss anything further after that point. At this point, i want to introduce the chief of the l. A. County Fire Department. Good afternoon. Im the fire chief of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. At approximately 7 22 this morning, resources from Los Angeles County fire station 106 received a report of a solo Vehicle Accident at the intersection of Hawthorne Boulevard and palos verdes drive north at Rolling Hills estates. Upon arrival, i resources and personnel from the Los Angeles County Fire Department observed a single rollover vehicle incident with one person trapped. The person trapped was extricated by Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel. It was earlier stated that the jaws of life was use to extricate the person trapped. It was later determined by our personnel that a tool that is used for prying and annexes also used to pry the person free from the vehicle. The person was packaged at the incident with serious injury and because of the fact that they needed to be extricated, they were transported to Harbor Ucla Hospital because of the extrication oil and Harbor Hospital is also a Trauma Center. As indicated earlier, also a second Vehicle Accident with no injuries. Thank you. And the vehicle involved is a 2021 genesis, a midsized suv. [speaking spanish] bret l. A. County sheriff now obviously translating into spanish. What he said about this accident, this involves tiger woods who went to the hospital and had surgery. The l. A. County sheriff here, alex villanueva, the officers who did not see any evidence of impairment. Trace gallagher is with us. We are learning more about the situation here, trace. A little bit, bret. We were interested to find out if Sheriff Villanueva was going to give us information on the speed of the vehicle. The Los Angeles Times as reporting, as we talked about at the top of the show, the speed of the vehicle is critical here, you have this winding turns, coming down this grade, it appears that tiger woods had control, it appears, bret, he lost control before it bret they are taking q and dana. Sorry. Well leave it at that. He was alive and he was conscious, and thats the extent of that. There was no evidence of impairment. Subsequent to that, we are not going to make an eight there is no effort to draw blood, for example, at the hospital. Was he conscious when you got there and can you tell us a little bit more if you didnt use the jaws of life, how did that Extrication Process Take place . The information that i got back from my personnel, they would do a scene assessment. It was brought to my attention that he was conscious. Now exactly what was said is unknown but he was conscious. Our personnel made an assessment to make a determination of the level of consciousness. Make sure they are breathing. Control any serious bleeding and then address any serious injuries. It was brought to my attention that he had serious leg injuries and that was assessed at the incident. The jaws of life are used as part of a package to extricate people. It was later brought to the attention that the jaws were not used to extricate tiger woods. We used a tool used for prying and we also used an ax to pry him from the vehicle. He was taken from the vehicle with a collar and backboard for spinal precautions. He was he had the proper splints. Because of the nature of the incident, being a solo vehicle rollover and the fact that it required an extrication, that meant taking him to the nearest Trauma Center, which was at ucla hospital, where he was transported in serious but stable condition. Which leg . I do not know. It was my understanding that he had serious injuries to both legs. Was it decision to go there or was it the closest . The determination of where to be transported was made by the paramedics and the captain on the scene. The reason that tiger woods was transported to that hospital is because it meets the Trauma Center criteria. Base of the nature of the incident, a solo rollover vehicle and the damage to the vehicle and then it also required him to be extricated thats one of the criteria that meets Trauma Center criteria. Therefore he was transported to the nearest Trauma Center which is the ucla hospital. Was he airlifted and can you tell us if he had any injuries anywhere else beside his legs and if it was critical . He was not airlifted. There were no other life endangering injuries to my knowledge. Any indication of the speed at the time the vehicle lost control and went over . Any indication of how fast the vehicle may have been going at the time . At the time it crossed the Center Divider to the point that it rested several hundred feet away. So i would say that indicates he was going at a relatively greater speed than normal. However, because its downhill, it slopes and also the curves, that area has a High Frequency of accidents. Its not uncommon. Any skid marks . No, no skid marks or braking. From the Center Median it crossed over into the opposing lane of traffic. Hit a curve, hit a tree and there were several rollovers in the process. Have they given any preliminary indications of more than 45, 50 Miles Per Hour . They will have to figure that out. Thats why the Traffic Investigators make the big bucks that they make. Can you tell us about his condition now . We reached out, weve been in touch with his manager, and they didnt want to say anything on his condition. Is he out of surgery and perhaps have been moved to his own room . Serious condition as a result of the accident and thats about all they want to say. Weather was not a factor. How long was the process getting him out . We arrived on the scene at 7 18. They were notified within four minutes. We got the call from the Sheriff Department at approximately 7 22 this morning. Our resources arrived on the scene at approximately 7 28. I dont have information right now in relation to how long it took to extricate him from the vehicle. Do you have any indication that there were drugs or medications involved . No. Did someone call 911, a bystander . We had a neighbor call 911. Thats how the call was received at the station. Know evidence of impairment at this time. That will be subject to the investigation. What impairments are you looking for . Were looking at signs of under the influence of either narcotics, medication, alcohol, odor of alcohol, all these Different Things that would give you an idea and their behavior but it was none present. Could he have fallen asleep, have heart attack . Now were going beyond what we have. The investigators will have to figure that one out. Is there a black box [inaudible] did this vehicle have that information the investigators will be able, if they have it, they will be able to have that and download it and that will give us a good idea. Not that were aware of. You said he was conscious. Was he able to communicate how much pain he was in, whether or not was he able to communicate at all . He was able to communicate and he was conscious. Ill leave it at that. [speaking in spanish] were in the q a section here with the l. A. County sheriff, and hearing about this accident with tiger woods. No skid marks on the road. He hit the median and then several rolls over of that car, which was a courtesy car from genesis. Remember, as he was leaving the hotel this morning, he was on his Way To Go Meet with nfl quarterbacks brew brees and justin, for kind of a lesson. Hes doing these things for Discovery Network and golf tv, and he was on his way to Rolling Hills country club when this accident happened. Trace gallagher, we learned a little bit more there. The speed they dont have down exactly, but they are clear that they didnt have any indication of impairment. There you see justin and drew brees who he was going to meet at Rolling Hills country club. The sheriff mentioned, he was speaking in spanish, he said the distance was several hundred feet. In that answer he said 500 feet and thats about what our fox affiliate had it today, from the median where he hit the sign that said Rolling Hills estate until he landed on the embankment on the other side of the road meaning he crossed traffic, and remember, this is at 7 00 in the morning, west coast time. Its busy. Even during the pandemic. You normally have traffic in that area, in all areas of los angeles so the fact that he traveled at a good rate of speed some 500 feet, possibly rolling the whole time, missing Telephone Poles on both the left and the right, clipping some bushes, clipping some small trees but not hitting any oncoming traffic is significant in itself so the 500 foot thing is an indicator that he was traveling at a decent speed but when youre coming down the hills, a good rate of speed could be 50 or 55 mile per hour. Its unclear how fast he was going. He was maybe going a little too fast coming out of the hotel. That he was running late. Kind of adding on to your reporting that he was going to the Rolling Hills country club this morning to meet with justin, the quarterback for the chargers and the quarterback for the New York Saints drew brees for training sessions. But the if it started at 7 00 clearly he was in kind of a rush. Hes a fan of driving himself. Always has been, which has gotten him into some trouble over the years so people say why didnt he just take an uber. Why didnt he have a car or driver. He likes to drive himself which is why he got a car. He talked about his Health Situation with jim nance with cbs over the weekend, talking about his recent back surgery and he was asked about what was happening. Lets take a listen to that. Everybody wants to know how youre feeling, what youre doing since you came off your fifth back operation. Im feeling fine. Im feeling fine. A little bit stiff. I have one more mri scheduled so well see if its scarred over finally and then i can start doing more activities. But still in the gym. Still doing the mundane stuff that you have to do for rehab. And he was rehabbing, hoping to get back to the masters this year. Obviously won in 2019. Trying to make a comeback, but that, trace, looked like a long shot listening to him describe that. According to the sheriff he has two serious leg injuries. He was in surgery today, and were told that hes in serious condition. We heard Compound Fractured and shattered ankle. We heard they were on the same leg so its news when the sheriff comes out and says that both legs were injured which is not to say that he doesnt have a Compound Fracture and a shattered ankle on one leg and some other injuries on the other leg, but saying that he has injuries on both legs steps this up a little. We should note that the reason, and the sheriff reiterated this, the reason they brought him to uc harbor is because its a level one Trauma Center and its got a staff, maybe not onsite but they can get quick call in to these orthopedic surgeons, some of the best in the world and they were the ones on duty today. Trace, great job on duty today. And Breaking News out there in california. Were going to follow all of this. If there are new developments well head back as we get news about tiger woods. Fortunately, lucky to be alive according to the sheriffs deputies out in los angeles. There is other news today. The blame game fully under way tonight regarding last months capital riot. Senators heard from witnesses about the Security Failures on january 6 that enabled the crowd to storm the capitol and who exactly dropped the ball. Lot of questions about that. Congressional correspondent chad has the story tonight from capitol hill. Good evening, chad. Good evening, bret. The insurrection exposed the vulnerability of whats supposed to be one of the worlds most secure buildings. Former Law Enforcement officials testified they are not sure, what they could have done to protect the capitol against what they say was a planned attack. These criminals came prepared for war. Weve got 10 people officials contend they didnt see the violence coming. Former House Sergeant of Arms Paul Irving expected demonstrations similar to other maga. We all believed the plan met the threat. We all know now he had the wrong threat. Go there ready for war. We get our president or we die. Top congressional Security Officials say they never saw that information. I actually just in the last 24 hours was informed by the department that they actually had received that report. Did you get the report . No. Mr. Irving . I did not. The former chief of the Capital Police says the secret Service Never would have brought then Vice President pence to the capitol had they understood the threat but even if they had that information former Law Enforcement officials doubted they could defend the capitol that day. No civilian Law Enforcement agency is trained or equipped to repel an insurrection of thousands of individuals focused on breaching a building at all costs. He retired two days after the attack. We could have had 10 times the amount of people working for us and i believe the battle would have been just as devastating. This was pushback from the pentagon to send in troops. I was surprised at the reluctance to send the National Guard to the capitol grounds. Some contend he asked irving for help from the guards just after 1 00 p. M. On january 6 but irving disputes that. I did not receive a request for approval for not guard until shortly after 2 00 p. M. It was 1 09 or 2 00 p. M. It was 1 09, sir. I did not get a request at 1 09 that i can remember. The difference between 1 30 and 2 10, it makes a big difference. Senators requested Phone Records to determine who is telling the truth. I string told senators he never consulted with House Speaker nancy pelosi about calling in the guard. Pelosi wants a Bipartisan Commission to probe the riot that would be similar to the 9 11 commission but pelosis idea could tilt seats on the panel in favor of democrats, and that may be enough to kill the plan. Live on capitol hill. Thank you. Next up President Biden meets with the Prime Minister of canada thats caused a little tension between the allies. That and all the other news of the day next. L boss. Bret breaking tonight, wrapping up the l. A. County Sheriffs Department press conference, the sheriff just said this would have been a fatal crash if the interior of tiger woods vehicle hadnt remained so intact, adding that the air bags deployed, that hes lucky to be alive. He is alive and in serious condition. Were told that he has serious injuries to both legs. Well get an update on his status a little bit later, we expect. Back here in washington earlier today President Biden held his first meeting with canadas Prime Minister since taking office. It was virtual instead of in person because of covid19. And there is already a sticky issue between the ally neighbors. The pipeline. Good evening, peter. There are still 565 miles between them. President biden is hosting canadian Prime Minister trudeau since coming to the white house right now. It comes about a month after their first diplomatic dust up about the cancellation of the keystone xl pipeline permit. The Prime Minister raised his concerns directly with the president , as previously and hes welcomed today. The Biden Administration is less keen to stop construction on another pipeline, the nord stream 2, a putin priority that runs from russia to germany because according to the Wall Street Journal when the state department sent congress a list of companies they will sanction if involved with that project, it didnt have any names added to it since the last report in the trump era. Youre taking correct for the stuff the Previous Administration did . Im speaking for the department of state. All right. The people who have been working this, working this now, are the same people a month ago, are the same people three months ago. But republicans here are most urgently concerned about 11,000 jobs lost here. On the keystone xl project. They are in some ways heartless. If you look at the cancellation of the Keystone Pipeline and the jobs lost because of that cancellation. The new administration wont budge citing the threat of a changing climate. John kerry said there are only nine years left to save the world from the effects of Climate Change. Does President Biden share that assessment, nine years . I dont have a new timeline to give you from here. I can confirm for you, though, that the president agrees with former secretary kerry that its a crisis. That time is of the essence. We need to act quickly. Its not clear how quickly jobs killed by climate minded Executive Orders can be replaced but the administration insists Fossil Fuel Workers can learn to do something else. What President Biden wants to do is make sure those folks have better choices, that they have alternatives. That they can be the people who go to work to make the solar panels. His approach is somewhat surprising because the uncertainty created by forcing Fossil Fuel Workers to change jobs without telling them when or where that happens is similar to something from bidens own youth, when his dad lost a fossil fuel dad. My dad had a job in scranton and when coal died and everything started to close up. And had to move across state lines to delaware. It was only 159 miles but it seemed like the end of the world. His dad had to learn a new trade. He ended up getting a good job a decent job managing a car dealership. I thought about how hard mist been for my dad. So most of the things that biden is trying to do differently than trump are because of the environment, and this afternoon Justin Trudeau was talking about this joint communique that canada and the u. S. Will put out about their meeting virtually today and he said he thinks its nice that the u. S. Is not trying to take references to Climate Change out of a Statement Like that the way he says they did in the past but instead are trying to put them in. Bret . Bret peter, thank you. Covid19 vaccine makers telling Congress Tonight Supplies should surge in the coming weeks due to manufacturing expansions, and new vaccine authorizations. Executives from pfizer, moderna and johnson and johnson told a house panel today they would be able to supply enough vaccine to fully inoculate 130 million peel in the u. S. By the end of march. And the entire country by the end of july. But what could be some alarming news tonight for Older Americans who have been led to believe that being vaccinated against covid19 will enable them to finally see Family Members they havent visited in months and months, since the start of the outbreak. Mixed messages about that. White house correspondent Kristin Fisher is here to explain. Ask any grandparent what they are looking forward to the most after getting vaccinated and they probably say seeing their grandkids. But now more than two months after the first shots were administered in the United States, the cdc still has not said if it is safe to do so. When dr. Anthony fauci was pressed on it he didnt have an answer. I dont want to be making a recommendation now on public tv. We want to sit down with the team, take a look at that. The fact that dr. Fauci is going on cnn and he cant tell me if i get vaccine if ill be able to have dinner with my family or dinner, i mean, i dont have any grandparents left, but, you know, older people, if i can go to dinner at a friends house who are older its terribly inconsistent messaging. Dr. Faucis messaging on face masks has also been inconsistent as the pandemic has progressed. Putting a mask on yourself is more to prevent you from infecting someone else. And if everybody does that, were each protecting each other. If you have a physical covering with one layer you put another layer on, it just makes common sense that it likely would be more effective. The cdcs website defines someone being fully vaccinated, two weeks after they receive one shot in a single dose vaccine but there are questions about transmissibility and even if youre fully vaccinated the cdc still recommends wearing a maximum and socially distancing. Common sense tells you that, in fact, you dont have to be as stringent in your Public Health measures but what we want, we want to get Firm Recommendations from the cdc. Now this comes on the heels of those long awaited cdc guidelines on reopening schools and mixed messaging from the Biden Administration on vaccinating teachers if thats a prerequisite. As for when these new recommendations for grandparents might be released all dr. Pausecy would say today is soon. Bret . Bret kristen from the White House Briefing room. Thank you. Bidens choice to run the health and Human Services department runs into significant opposition in the senate. Well take you there. First, heres what were covering around the country. Fox 5 in new york, a grand jury wants to bring charges against any Rochester Police officer in the death of daniel prude. Bret the senate has confirmed veteran diplomat Linda Thomas Greenfield as President Bidens United Nations ambassador. The senator also confirmed today former Iowa Governor as agriculture secretary. The road, however, is not so smooth for the president s pick to run the health and Human Services department. California Attorney General javier is facing a serious challenge from senate republicans. Rich . Good evening, bret. There is significant Republican Opposition to President Bidens nominee to lead the department of health and Human Services. Its a massive bureaucracy overseeing the Public Healthcare structure and response. This morning the Senate Committee questioned former congressman and California Attorney general javier on his nomination to lead hss where Committee Republicans asked becerra to explain his congressional voting record. You voted against a ban on partial birth abortion. Why . We may not always agree where we can go but i think we can find some Common Ground because Everyone Wants to make sure if you have an opportunity, youre going to live a healthy life. I think we can reach Common Ground on many issues but on partial birth abortion it sounds like were not going to reach Common Ground there. Republicans also knocked becerras lack of healthcare experience. Republicans are flailing around trying to find reasons to oppose becerra. They will do this again tomorrow when he testifies before another senate panel, the Senate Finance committee in the afternoon. Bret . Bret rich, thank you. The dow reversing itself, 360point loss but they ended the day 16 ahead for the dow. The s p 500 gained five. The nasdaq lost 68. Bret there is an optics issue tonight for the Biden Administration over the housing of children traveling without their parents across the border from mexico into the United States. Washington post is Characterizing The Camp as a migrant facility. During the trump years the Headlines De Cried such placement as the caging of children. The biden team is rejecting the comparison. Chief correspondent Jonathan Hunt tonight reports from los angeles. There has been such a surge in unaccompanied crossing of children that the government is running out of places to house them. Hence, the biden administerings decision to reopen an Emergency Facility used during the trump era. One that attracted a good deal of criticism from immigration advocates. The camp in texas is designed to hold 700 children between the ages of 13 and 17. And yesterday dozens were taken there in vans. The reopening of the camp prompting the Childrens Defense Fund to tweak, its as true today as it was in 2019. Children do not belong in detention. The white house insisted today president bide isnt not replicating trump era policies. This is not kids being kept in cages. Nearly 6,000 unaccompanied children were apprehended crossing the border in january. Housing they will has become more difficult because of c covid19 restrictions, and around 600 were in custody with the department of health and Human Services. Back in 2019 when the controversial site was used under trump, a spokesman said the Emergency Facility was essentially the best of bad options. The reason why we stood this up is, again, we dont want to allow children to stay in Border Patrol stations any longer than they need to. Still a spokesman told us via email today the camp remains a better Holding Facility than a Border Patrol station, and he emphasized that in his view the children received good care during the Trump Administration and receive good care there today. Bret . Bret jonathan, thank you. Up next, a panel on the Pipeline Debate between President Biden and canada. Oh, yes, that pipeline in russia. Now that the United States is back in the Paris Agreement we intend to demonstrate our leadership in order to spur other countries to raise their own ambitions. Canada and the United States are going to work in lock step to display the seriousness of our commitment at both home and abroad. To that end, were launching a high level climate ambition ministerial to align our policies and goals to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. President joe biden in a virtual bilateral meeting with the canadian president. This as canada is not too happy about the recent move by the Biden Administration to cancel the keystone xl pipeline using oil from the canadian sands. That cancellation is actually going to increase emissions, if you listen to the critics of this move. What about this and also another pipeline in the news, lets bring in our panel. The chief correspondent of the washington examiner, National Political correspondent on National Public radio and tray gowdy, a former congressman from south carolina. What about the first of all i thought it was a little weird that they both were virtual and trudeau was looking the other way at one point but besides that the substance that came out of knit yes. Look, these are the two closest allies, and Justin Trudeau had nice things to say about joe bidens overall climate policies. He thanked him for restoring leadership on this but they have a big difference on Keystone Pipeline. Its gotten over inflated as an issue in the United States, but it became a really important symbolic thing for environmental activists. Joe biden decided to stop it. Canada has talked about maybe putting some kind of sanctions on the u. S. If they canceled the pipeline, so this is a real exception to the overall rule, or the overall comedy between these two leaders. I dont know how they are going to resolve it. In the meantime, there is another pipeline in the news. This scoop. Allies worried biden is shaky on putins pipeline. Its the first test whether his tough rhetoric against the russian leader will be matched by actions. Opponents fear like biden doesnt want to antagonize merkel, german Prime Minister. Wont inflict serious costs on the germans, while team biden has said the pipeline is a bad deal and they want to stop it. The administration has done little so far to suggest its going to lean into the fight. Basically they are saying, cancel the Keystone Pipeline at home but youre not putting the meat into pushing russia not to go forward with this oil changing dynamic in eastern europe. Yes, bret.
