What was it like working for george bush here, from 2,000 to 2004. What was it like working for donald trump, where every day people said youre illegitimate, the russians put you there. What is it like as joe biden seems to win the election and the trump people dont accept it. We have to stop doing this. We have to get more faith in our election system. The numbers reflect what were seeing with the Border Patrol, what theyve been saying. Look at the apprehension and expulsions. Year to year, already at our southern border in the middle of a pandemic, in a time where theyre saying you might not be able to get on a flight, were letting everyone come into our country and stay at least for a while, enough to contaminate. New york decided to try it. Region by region, they finally reopened. Long island jumped into action within two weeks. How did it take place . How do the kids feel about it . How do they feel about getting back on the field, six months after they were supposed to . We went out and found out. Everybody was hopeful we would get the pandemic under control. They made the prudent decision to cancel sports and that was disappointing. What was it like when you found out when the season was canceled. We were really disappointed. I was really disappointed. I felt like devastated. You might be saying to yourself whats the big deal, its just sports. Only 2 of High School Athletes get a Scholarship Offer anyway. It is a big deal. A study was done. Players were asked how do you feel about the season being canceled. 68 said they feel anxiety, even depression. Bottom line, sports matter. You learn about hard work, dedication. The way to cope with anything thats going on, how they make friends. Its nice to win, its nice to play games. Outside of that, you dont see how the teams are family. Its about like team and coming together with your friends and actually being able to do something you work well with together. Your teammates help you find who you are, push you to be their best. Long island decided to play. And they could not be happier. I was so excited especially for lacrosse. Oh, my gosh, i was so excited. I was so excited to cheer. We are the devils and weve got the beat. I was so happy. I love playing the game. Football is march 1st. And then about six weeks later, then well be getting with our spring sports. We have basketball teams playing right now. Let me get this straight. Fall football in the spring, in march. Were going to play when we can play and well take whatever precaution it takes. If you want to know why its not a canceled season but a modified seasons when it comes to sports in long island, its because of laura kern and steve in suffolks, they have different plans but the same goal. Were getting some normal back to the kids. Get the kids back on the court, back on the field. One of the things youre doing a little different, youre allowing the districts to react. We have 56 different districts, some are not allowing spectators, some are. Some are requesting testing, some arent. We feel theyre trustworthy enough to make the decisions for themselves. We have protocols in place. We have weekly testing. The kids have to socially distance. They wear a mask off the court, when theyre on the bench. Cant have the fans like they did before. The kids are taking in this district, across the country, a character pledge. Whats it like for the coaches. Were trying to figure out the best way to handle things. The protocols have been consistent. Its been easy to follow. The kids have done a great job. Its part of life. You get thrown a curve ball and you have to figure things of out. You know whats worse than wearing a mask . Not having a season. Goal for the season. Finish the last year with my best friends and enjoy every moment of it. So i think its so cool, they said in august were going to try to get you on the field in september. They canceled fall sports. They saved football, two weeks to get ready. Soccer, playing in two weeks. Put your uniform on. Spring, well start a little late but you get your season in. The whole country should be doing this. Theyve taken the protocols in. And look, when you ask your players to do things, whether to show up on time or wear a certain sweat suit and where your uniform a certain way, they are used to it. They expect it. Its part of the process. Now you ask them to wear a mask, ask them to distance, find a way to Stay Together and maybe not go with the general population for your school during the season. They welcome the opportunity. What i also found is the kids were traumatized by not seeing their teammates, saying why do i work out, im not going to be on a team. And knowing we could do this because some are playing on club teams and theyre told they cant play on their school teams which is more disciplined, more distanced, with more locker rooms and more control. The Football Coach i talked to saying why cant we play . I have no answer for you. Have you to talk to the governors and mayors. Theres no reason why the kids cant try. If worse comes to worse, a kid tests positive, a team cant play, its called postpone the game, maybe you dont play it. You go back in. The nets had their best player, hes got to quarantine for a week. They kept playing. So were willing to try. Give them the opportunity to try to play. You have no right to deny them all normalcy, despite the pandemic. You have got to let these kids do it. So we had watched the liquor store across the street from there go up in flames and their historic sign go up in flames from tv. So we kind of knew it was coming. Going down there a few hours later once they were able to secure the space and actually see the historic sign in the rubble, its really emotional. The disconnect between a peaceful, meaningful protest that keeps George Floyds name in everybodys mind and the reason that were all talking about this to destruction of a community, that will be the disconnect that will have for days. He hasnt really talked about doing anything that extreme. But tell us about your Student Loan Debt history. Yes. So in 2011 i graduated with a Masters Degree from the university of illinois. My undergraduate and graduate debt totaled just about 74,000 and i had that paid off in 23 months. I took a job in a very low cost living area and just for the next two years hammered out that debt and then went Back To School in 2016, finished an mba at Syracuse University in December Of 2017 and had 117,000 in debt and was blessed enough to pay that off in 34 months. And then im working on a third Masters Degree and have half of that paid off. In the three years, December 2017 to december 2020, i had successfully paid off 132, 133,000 in Student Loan Debt. Steve obviously, you were driven and you were motivated and you were very efficient at it and in fact youve written a book on just that topic. But what do you make of these Student Debt Holders who are saying you know what, we cant afford it, we need government help, help us pay this off, joe. Yeah, its totally ridiculous. I mean, again, i have proven that it can be done and i know everyones not in my situation. I know people with 200, 225,000 in Student Loan Debt and i absolutely sympathize with people. You have to get out there and work hard many at a times i was working two or three jobs, i still work two or three jobs right now, building two businesses and teaching fulltime, adjunct teaching at another college. It can be done. People have to move forward and work and not expect the government to come in with free money. Steve to that point, matthew, you say if they do something about Student Loan Debt, why stop there. Why not have the government pay off credit cards, why not have the government pay off your mortgage, you say. Oh, yeah, absolutely. Why not forgive all the rent, why not cut all the credit card debt. Its a Slippery Slope were going down. To me, i look at education as a weapon and investment. What you choose to do with that is entirely up to you. Everyone has the opportunity to go out and do what ive done the last decade. Its just youve got to work hard and put in the effort, not expect entitlements at the end of the day. First of all, the National Anthem before a sporting event, its not necessary but its part of our tradition. At this point weve been doing it since the world war. Its part of our common culture many we have to ask ourselves, what is our common culture anymore, what is something we can unify around. If the answer to that isnt the United States of america and its symbols, then i think were in a bad place. Mark adopted the idea that the United States of america is irredeemably flawed, inherently racist and its symbols therefore are politically divisive. I think many disagree. We see the flag, the anthem, the United States of america for its best, not its worst. We know that this is the greatest Accomplishment Societally and human civilly civilization, the United States of america while flawed is the least racist country to inhabit the planet. When we see the flag and anthem were proud it represents the best of what we can achieve, not perfection, but the best. That should bring us together. Thats a unifying factor, not a dividing factor. I wish that mark and many nba players who i like, i root for, i had interactions with saw that same unifying factor. I truly do believe if we could talk and understand american history, in its totality, we could understand that this is a great nation and unify around it. Ainsley do you think he changed his mine because the nba made him or because of the negative backlash. I think he changed it probably because the nba made him. And the nba realizes something that everyone watches realizes, nba ratings have borne out you shouldnt make customers choose between your product and their nation. Its not a Good Business model. People love this country. Its symbols, its anthem, its constitution, its flag, people love this country and you dont want to put your business on the other side of really one of the two or three deepest things people have in this life, their god, their family and their country. My boys are all over, i have one in elementary school, one in high school and one in junior high. It was too difficult for me so i ended up putting my two younger children in a Charter School and bidens School Reopening plan to return kids to school one day a week does not address our childrens needs or doesnt work for the working parent. Private schools and child care facilities are able to be open five days a week, i dont understand why Public Schools cant open or return five days a week. It seems like the School Choice bill needs to answer where statefunding follows the child,r parents that cant afford private school, tutor or home school, at least theyll have a School Voucher to get a quality education. We went from having a number of failing students less than 20 to more than 50 of the students were failing and most of it was because you have to constantly hold your hand and walk your children through what theyre doing. These kids are young. They dont know how to use Microsoft Teams or how to even open a new tab on a brandnew chromebook that they got the day before school. Ainsley right. A lot of us dont know how to do that either so we cant help them. Absolutely. It was absolutely difficult. We had to make some tough choices.
