President biden spoke at the white house to outline his nearly 2 trillion plan to turn things around. I would like to be doing it with the support of republicans. I have met with republicans. There is some really fine people that want to get something done. But they are just not willing to go as far as as i think we have go. If i have to choose between getting help right now or compromising on a bill thats up to the crisis, thats an easy choice. Im going to help the American People who are hurting now. The u. S. Has recovered roughly half of the 22 million jobs lost during the first two month of the pandemic. In an interview with cbs. President biden said the massive bill isnt likely to include a 15 Federal Minimum Wage favored by many on the left. This comes as a new Green Jobs Report says only 49,000 jobs were added last month. A year ago the Unemployment Rate was nearly half of what it is today. For context in january of last your, 225,000 jobs were added, of course, thats before the pandemic took hold here in the u. S. You remember that from obamacare, the process they used to shouldve through obamacare so they could get past republican opposition. Here we go again, its stimulus through reconciliation 1. 9 trillion and the real opponent turned out to be process which they will overcome. Pete they have gone through the motions inviting the 10 republican senators into the oval office. They knew they could only pass it with 51 votes unless they compromised which they didnt want to do. Enough to we have a 2 trilliondollar covid Relief Package which has 350 billion for blue state bailouts. 1 0 billion for schools. Tons of increased unemployment. Extending that for six more months. What is important to note and the Wall Street Journal breaks it down very well, first of all, we have already spent 3. 7 trillion in covid relief in 2020. So we are already at almost 4 trillion. This is 2 trillion more. 1 trillion of that previous relief, guys, still is unspent. They havent spent it yet. So have you 59 billion for schools. 239 billion for healthcare and almost 500 billion in Small Business loans yet to actually be spent. Yet, the urgency is no we have to spend 2 trillion more, putting us at basically 6 trillion in relief. The one thing, jed, they refuse to do end the lockdowns that would allow people to get back to business which is what people really need. Yesterday. Jedediah thats the point i was going to make can you do this over and over again and talk about increasing Unemployment Benefit and stimulus checks in the shortterm yes, of course those things will help people. Ultimately if these businesses have to remain shut down or in some case operate like restaurants at 25 capacity its not going to be a month. A month is going to pass or a few weeks is going to pass and those businesses are going to need another influx of cash. The ultimate resolution to all of this which i see completely absent in all of this is to reopen the country and let those businesses protect their customers as they want to do and be safe and prove that they can do that and they prioritize it but ultimately get people get back to business and that goes the same for School Reopenings and whatnot. Will, you talked about process and the idea of unity. And who Prioritizes Unity and whether or not those words are actually reflected in actions which we have been talking about for some time on this show. Well, White House Press secretary jen psaki was asked a little bit about joe biden and the promises he made when he ran and whether or not he is actually fulfilling those promises when it comes to unity. Here what happens she had to say. Well, first of all, the president ran on unifying the country and putting forward ideas that would help address the crises were facing. He didnt run on a promise to unite the democratic and Republican Party into one party in washington. Will threw hear jen psaki talking about unity. You understand the president , President Biden did run on unity. In fact, that was one of his big themes. Lets take a quick look back. This is not that long ago, actually, guys. This is october 6th of last fall. When then candidate biden talked very much about that word. Unity. Listen. Im running as a proud democrat but i will govern as an american president. If i will work with democrats and republicans. I will work as hard for those who dont support me as those who do it. Thats the job of a president. If the duty to care for everyone, refusal of democrats and republicans to cooperate with one another is not due to some Mysterious Force beyond our control. Its a decision. Its a choice we make. And if we can decide not to cooperate, we can decide to cooperate as well. Thats the choice i will makes a president. It. Pete its the choice he will makes a president. Voters who voted for joe biden can be forgiven for being feel like they were hood winked. You hear that language. He has a track record, had a track record in the senate at some point of working with people. But his white house is staffed full of obama folks and hard core partisans who ultimately feel like they tried for it too long under when they were trying to get obamacare passed working with republicans and ultimately didnt get any republican votes. So this whole bipartisan thing yeah, we will pretend a little bit and shuffle things around but ultimately we are going to ram it down because of what you said, will, we have got the process on our side right now. We have the votes to do it. We can keep our caucus locked together and ultimately republicans they wish they were us. And they wish they could push their priority, sorry this is hard ball d. C. Politics and thats ultimately the way the white house sees all of this. Senator rand paul was on our network last night talking about whether or not the white house cares about the other half of the country this is what he said. We will be two weeks into the administration. The first thing they will do is extend the bitterness of the election with impeaching of former president. The second thing they are going to do is add 2 trillion worth of debt to our country with no republican support, zero. They come to the white house only to tell them no, we are doing this only Bernie Sanders way or the highway with only democrats. Really, this is showing you how they want to run the country. They do not care what the other half of the country want. Pete such a great point on top of what the senator said. And oh, by the way. They are going to impeach a former president at the beginning of the administration and the white house is going to effectively take a hands off perspective and they hope that unity emerges from that. But, another topic we are tracing this morning is immigration. Because if you go to our southern border, of the battle over whats happening there including covid19 is raging as the Biden Administration has sent signals, very loud signals to migrants and others and illegals saying the Catch And Release program is back on. Remain in mexico is gone. And because of covid19, effectively, were going to have to be releasing people under this health crisis. Jed, when you listen to the rhetoric and the signals, why would people not believe now is the time to come when they wont be deported, whether they dont have to remain in mexico, when bringing a child with you policy has expanded as a reason to get. In with covid19 we are shipping vaccines to the southern border to give to illegals, sounds like a good typically to run for the border if you need to. Jedediah yeah, and on that point, White House Press secretary jen psaki was asked directly about that. Listen to what she had to say and we will talk about it. What could be done to provide Covid Testing to migrants at the border. Are you suggesting theyre letting people in across the border . Because of 9 will Executive Order that the president signed earlier this week. Which one . Rescinding president trumps policy which stopped Catch And Release. They are saying they are having to provide they are having release migrants into the community before they know for sure that they do not have covid. They are worried that it could spread in the communities. Certainly the reach we have put in a number of protections in terms of travel and otherwise is to keep the American People safe. But, i havent seen that report. I cant validate the accuracy of it but i would certainly point you to the department of Homeland Security for more specifics. What is being done to prevent the spread of covid19 in these communities if more individuals are incentivized to come across and they are if Catch And Release is reinstated. Back in july we defunded the police 15 million and the gvrt was specialty units was disbanded. Furthermore, one of the city commissioners that spearheaded that 15 million cut further went on to say that the gvrt disbandment of it had no contribution to the violence we are seeing right now. I think we can all see that it has had a dramatic effect on Public Safety and movability here in portland. Pete talk about livability in portland. S to the will environment itself feel more secure without the Gun Violence Reduction team . Police lost the tools they need to keep citizens safe . Yeah. We saw those tools being shipped away during the riots over the summer. And at this point we really dont have the numbers to bring back the gvrt. Were down 13 since july alone. 13 of a force that was already down about close to 50 . So, we have for a city this size just over 700 officers on our street. And we should have about 1100 officers. So, theres no way with the further defunding thats going on that we can bring back gvrt. Pete absolutely. When you dont have police, you cant enforce the law, which makes lawabiding citizen that more vulnerable. And thats exactly what we are seeing in portland. But, it feels like most of the time im alone in my room unless i go for launch and break for food and im back on the screen. And were not even getting into how much work we get to. So its been very lonely but im glad that i have got a brother with me thats going through the exact same thing as well as my family who are together. Conor, what are some of the academic challenges that some in high school might face without having access to peers and to teachers close by and do everything essentially through a computer screen. One of the delays pretty regularly is whenever a teacher asks a question or anything. There is always a 15 second delay whenever students before a student can answer a question. Its really difficult to really foster discussion in the classroom if you dont have that Classroom Setting and the atmosphere of learning that is crucial and in Person Learning. They admitted that they said they were over zealous and people were scrambling and giving them money and equipment not needed at all. Be careful what the demands are right now to make sure it really is a need and not just asking for more than necessary. A. Jedediah doctor from a medical perspective im curious what your take has been watching different cities and states take this on in drastically different ways. Watched a segment about florida and how they have managed to reopen largely and safely and look at places like new york and new jersey that have followed a very different protocol. What do you think from a medical perspective was there a certain way to go in order to achieve success . Whats your take on all of this as it unfolds . Well, jedediah thats a great question. You have to remember the northeast is very different than florida. Sunny florida you can be outside year around. The majority of people are still eating outdoors in florida whereas in the northeast we have much more confined spaces and they have to be indoors because its so cold. From a viral transmission standpoint its very difficult for gatherings to occur in the northeast when it is so cold right now. I can tell you by looking at all these states its mass chaos trying to get the vaccines out. The biggest strategy im seeing so far is hundreds, if not thousands of doses are being discarded because they dont have the people receive the vaccine. There has been a lot of contradictions as we have seen unfold this past week between what the administration seems to be saying. What the cdc is saying. Who is right. When is it going to happen . A lot of confusing mixed messaging. Take a listen to White House Press secretary jen psaki when she was pressed for answers on School Reopenings and then we will chat a bit more about it. Here is jen. Will President Biden use the power of the bully pulpit to help congeal teachers who are unwilling to go Back To Schools. One, im going to reject the premise of the question. Were going to rely on cdc guidance, which again, is not officially out yet to determine the best way to do it. But there are several mitigating factors that we have seen in date up to date that will help make it. Sounded like a yes for expert fncht you are spokesperson for the white house you can certainly say that but you are not. Heres a question that doesnt have an answer or at least not an obvious answer. Why would the Biden Administration resist reopening schools . Why would they resist using the bully pulpit to push Teachers Unions to reopen schools. Why would they resist the recommendations of the cdc . Local mayors, even democrats like Lori Lightfoot . Why would the Biden Administration resist pushing to reopen schools . Here might be the answer. This is contributions from Teachers Unions to politicians including president joe biden. 232,000 to bidens 50,000. 51,000 just about to Bernie Sanders. Gary peters 37,000. Jamie harrison 36,000. Elizabeth warren 34,000. However, pete and jed, when you add up dollars sometimes. Especially in a president ial election. When you see hundreds of millions of dollars spent, you start to wonder how much does 200,000 impact an election . Let me show you something that does impact an election. Union membership from teachers Unions National Education Association over 3 million members. The American Federation of teachers 1. 7 million members. And local, New York State United Teachers 600,000 members. Tell me those numbers dont swing an election and have a price to pay on the back end. Pete of course they do. And Teachers Unions are the Foundation Stone of the Democrat Party base. Go to any state and the state Teachers Union is probably the most powerful lobby in that state. They give exclusively to democrats and expect a pay back in return. In the case of joe biden, as you pointed out, will, he gets 4 to 5 times more donations from national Teachers Unions than anyone else. You might say he is in bed with the Teachers Unions except he actually is in bed in the Teachers Union is that dr. Jill biden is a member of a Teachers Union. So at every turn he is going to favor the base of his own party and thats why, jed, you talked about it the cdc, the cdc director came out on wednesday and said i think schools could be opened safely. Has doubled down on that. So this is a white house that said we are going to follow the science always. Yet, their own cdc director is starting to say well we could open it up if we want to. Here is a flashback of joe biden and other democrats saying we will always follow the science. These steps are asking people to take are political statements. Every one of them is based on science, real science. First and foremost, is were going to follow, again, the science. And we will follow the guidance of science. Its based on science, not politics. Of course, you want that answer to come from President Biden himself. Thats not the way politics works. She needs to be pushed. What is the science . Is there data that is causing this delay . If so, what is it . People need to see it because parents are struggling. Kids are struggling. If there is some justification for this madness provide it. Now, of course there is none. Thats why thats not being done. Regardless she should be pressed on that consistently until every Single School is open. If youre a member of a family where one parent has had to quit a job and now just exiting on one income thats not always possible that has put an enormous financial strain on families around the country so that needs to be factored in because that then takes a toll on children as well, you have children and families with financial struggle now, theyre trying to learn on a computer, they dont have access to classmates they are suffering with Mental Health issues as a result of this. We really need to weigh the risk s at this point. This is a very long time for kids to be in a Remote Learning setting. They seem to find a way to navigate it and give parents the option of being online or inperson. Thats all were really looking for. There are people that are just better staying at home, they say for the rest of the year, they want to do the online thing, and then theres a large group that are seeing their kids suffer, seeing their kids fully withdraw people feel they need their kid inperson to be successful to have that option and of course the people that feel theyre safer at home give them the option of doing online learning.
