this is for the record. >> here, you can hear him moments after he arrived. >> nita and four of my grandchildren are burnt and shot up. right on the road out of la mora. >> for the langfords, this was just the beginning. the next 24 hours would be among the most difficult the family had ever known. in all, three mothers were brutally murdered, along with six of their children. eight survived, most wounded. what happened to them at the hands of a mexican cartel would echo around the world. >> in mexico today... >> nine american women and children were massacred... >> by drug cartel gunmen... >> just 70 miles south of the arizona border. >> little is known about the langfords after a year of reporting filled with assumptions and mistakes. this is the story of dawna langford, rhonita miller, and christina johnson and their home, la mora, mexico. it's also the story of those left behind who haven't shared the details of what they endured until now. >> [ crying ] my mom freaked out. so she tried jumping out of her seat, and she died. [ sobs ] >> it must have been worse than the worst thing you could ever imagine, seeing their brothers and sisters shot to hell and back. ♪♪ ♪♪ >> it was dark as we made our way through northern mexico last october, battling the dirt road for hours with kenny miller and his nephew lafe langford, whose family have been travelling this route for more than half a century. >> if you count the people that had anything to do with la mora, under a thousand. >> yeah, grandma diane has 200 grandkids. that's my grandma. >> good lord. >> [ laughs ] >> they were taking us home. few americans had heard of la mora, this small farming town in sonora, mexico, before the massacre, when kenny and his wife loretta lost their daughter-in-law rhonita and four grandchildren: 12-year-old howard jr.; krystal, who was 10; and the twins, titus and tiana, still tiny at eight months. theirs was the last of three vehicles to leave that morning and didn't get far, ambushed just four miles from home by cartel hitmen who riddled the car with bullets, then set it on fire with rhonita and the children still inside. >> i had to go up there to see it for myself, because i knew it would haunt me forever if i didn't know that each kid was there actually, or if they'd been taken or... i had to know. >> so, when did you do that? >> oh, not till the next day. when my son howard got here, we went up together. he couldn't hardly even go up there, but we did it together. >> was everything still there? >> it was just the burnt vehicle. you know, ashes, a few bones left here and there. the grandkids' heads were just teeny. you know, burnt to crisp. it was just -- it was horrible, but i still felt better facing it and knowing. >> mm-hmm. >> that was my son howard's first question, "are we sure that no one got out of that car?" >> this is what loretta and howard had to face. >> that's howard jr.'s shoe, where he tried to get out of the vehicle. these are his leg bones. you can see how he's just stuck in between the door right here. and there's the rest of his body still inside the vehicle. >> they filmed it all. >> his skull, ribs, all of it. over there is nita, hanging back through the seat. >> for the family, the fire was especially cruel. kenny and his daughter heather said none of them were prepared. >> we didn't get to say goodbye. there was nothing left to say goodbye to. believe it or not -- this is gonna sound strange -- but i never knew what a blessing it was to have a body to say goodbye to. >> so, they literally are just gone. >> and there's a huge difference. there's something to literally saying goodbye, even touching, like you used to. >> mm-hmm. >> just, i think something emotional happens there, like a closure. whereas my son howard came down to just charred remains of five of his -- of his family. >> when we met heather, she was with her children and her new baby addison, who'd just been born here at home. this used to be howard and rhonita's house, but heather said her brother couldn't bear to stay after the murders. still reeling, he sold her their home, packed up, and headed north to the u.s. for kenny, the ground here still holds memories of nita and the children, and he told us the loss hasn't lessened with time, but he's not ready to give up on la mora. i mean, this is really, really beautiful. >> you will not find a more peaceful place. >> and these are pomegranates over here? >> yes. >> wow. >> eat them just like that. i don't know how sweet these are, but... >> let's find out. mmm. >> is it good? >> that is good. >> you know, down here, we never made a living. and even in my many younger years, we'd always go out there and work in construction, save up money, bring it down here, spend it, and then go do it again, over and over, every year. >> and you always came back. >> oh, yeah. >> why? >> because it's in the blood. it's just, uh, you don't find that peace that you find here. >> still? you still have that sense of peace even after what happened? >> that's in the back of your mind, naturally, but i still feel the same about this place. kind of don't think justice is gonna happen. i mean, why should -- why should we be so privileged? this is just one of many. just one of countless massacres. you know, people are scared to talk, are scared to say anything, because they'll pop them off. >> they'll come back and they'll kill your children, in front of you. like kenny's son howard, his nephew tyler johnson also lost his wife. christina was the first to leave la mora that morning and way ahead of the others when she was ambushed at a separate site 11 miles further down the road. her 7-month-old baby faith was with her. tell me about christina. what was she like? >> spitfire. [ laughs ] good mom, good friend to everybody, had a passion for music, played the piano beautifully. >> behind christina on the road, dawna langford had no idea cartel hitmen lay in wait. the family said they've taken this route thousands of times and never had a problem, until the moment light machine gun and 50-caliber rounds rained down on dawna's vehicle, ripping through metal and flesh. she was killed reaching to protect her son, trevor, who was shot as he shielded his baby brother, brixton. 3-year-old rogan also died. >> she was a great mom. she was really into birthday parties. she was known for that. >> known for her cakes. >> yeah, she went all out on birthday parties. >> kylie, her brother devin and her older sister krystal are three of dawna's 13 children. >> she said that she had so many kids, she thought it was really important that at least one day of the year, they felt extra, extra special. >> ♪ happy birthday to kylie >> so she was that kind of mom. she really just wanted her kids to have, you know -- >> know that they were loved? >> yeah. >> so, tell me about your brothers. did you share a room? >> yeah. >> how many of you in one room? >> four. >> trevor was, um, a creative little boy with a lot of imagination. a lot of life to him. it was really cute. we miss him. >> what was rogan like? >> what are you guys all looking at me for? [ laughs ] >> because he was mini you. >> he was mini you. >> um, i guess i was just his favorite. rogan, no matter what, always chose me. i loved it. >> aww. >> it was cute. like, i'd try to get him to sleep with me some nights, and he'd wake up, "ylie. where's ylie?" he wanted kylie. >> i'm sorry, kylie. >> [ sobs ] >> i'm sorry. >> kylie and devin were in the car with their mom, along with little brothers xander... >> and i will eat your candy. >> ...cody, jake, their sister mckenzie and baby brixton. >> [ laughing ] >> their father, david langford, in a rare interview, told us he was in phoenix, arizona, when he heard they were missing, and rushed to the scene in mexico. when you found out that the kids had been found, that must have been a -- a relief. >> oh, obviously. y-y-y-you... >> really peaceful. lots of kids. our girls all know how to cook. our kids have homeschooled, then private school, public school. they know two languages. they work in the pecan fields. we do harvests, they all clean nuts. the boys work on the ranches. the boys take care of the cows, the sheep. we work our kids, but they also have a lot of, you know, free time. i think we keep a balance there. >> how big is your family? >> 28 girls, 28 boys. >> your brothers and sisters? >> yeah. >> [ laughs ] wow! >> we have 14 kids, 33 grandkids, minus the four from the massacre. we usually have a pretty full house, but that's how we like it. and we would like to see that continued with our kids. you know, carry it on. >> okay, here we go, guys. go. >> heading into what the family calls fig canyon with a tidal wave of kids, we got a sense of the chaos of families that count their children in the teens and grandkids in the hundreds... >> come here, puppy. here, puppy. >> ...and what it's like to live wild and free in a desert where the soil is rich and the land is blessed with water. oh, my word. this is pretty cool. it wasn't always so comfortable. kenny said there was nothing here when he came with his parents in the 1960s. they spent the first seven years living by the river in a tent, with no money, no power, and no plumbing. how has this valley changed over the years? i mean, you've been here all your life. >> progress, i guess. orchards. it used to be, back in the day, before we got into pecan trees, it was potatoes, beans, corn. there's just not -- there's not enough volume here to, uh, even make a living. so, then we got into trees, but trees take a good 10 years to get into decent production. >> mm-hmm. >> so it takes a good 15-plus years to even break even. when you plant trees, you plant for your children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren. so it's generational. >> if you're expecting mormon compounds or an extreme religious cult, you'll be disappointed. oh! who gave you that? who gave you that? there's no church, no temple, and you can marry outside the religion. oh, my gosh. there they go, there they go. look at them go. whoo! >> we're not active. >> well, i'm baptized in the church. i am. >> are you? >> i'm a lost soul. >> [ chuckles ] he's not baptized. >> [ chuckles ] no matter what you read, the langfords are not to be confused with the more controversial lebarón family, who founded the town of colonia lebarón in the neighboring state of chihuahua. more than a million mormons live in mexico, descendents of those who took refuge here in the late 1800s to avoid persecution and prosecution for polygamy. but kenny miller said there's more to the story. >> the mormons voted as a voting bloc. there wasn't the democrats, there wasn't republicans. they voted whatever the best candidate was. so, being as they were overwhelmingly the majority of utah at the time -- >> that was a lot of power. >> or, actually, it wasn't utah, because they were not made a state yet. congress -- they petitioned all those years to become a state, and the congress wouldn't let them become a state, for that reason. >> mexico gave them sanctuary. and while some still practice polygamy today, loretta is kenny's only wife. >> mormons -- you're thinking um... >> polygamists. >> well, yeah, polygamist and... >> throughout our history, they've been painted in a pretty bad name. consider them a cult, um, even to this day. there's a lot of religious, uh, hatred or religious prejudice against mormons. >> when news of the killings broke, many assumed the family was somehow caught up with mexico's cartels. so far, there's no indication that's true, and kenny insists it isn't. he said, growing up here, they were always aware of them, but as they've expanded from drugs into human smuggling and anything else that makes them rich, they're bolder and more violent than ever. nothing is more valuable to them then the u.s. border, and they fight for every inch of ground around it. take me back to that morning. >> we didn't notice anything necessarily unusual in the area. although i did get a call that morning from a guy we know in agua prieta -- which is the border town to douglas, arizona -- and he told me they had a major battle there that morning, approximately from 2:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m., and it was just a major war. and it felt like they were in iraq, shooting and burning houses, shooting and burning cars. of course, nothing ever comes out in the news, though. >> that's three hours from us. >> agua prieta has long been held by the sinaloa cartel, one of mexico's oldest and biggest. operating in more than 50 countries, with "el chapo," its most notorious leader, in u.s. custody, infighting between cartel factions is worse than ever. and loretta said they'd talked about security concerns the night before the massacre. >> we'd all actually sat around and talked about how the new sicarios looked like they were drugged up and stuff, and we need to be careful. and so they were actually leaving in a caravan, the three of them. and they were going to different places, but they were gonna travel over the mountain together. >> christina was headed to north dakota to join her husband; rhonita, to arizona; and dawna, to a family wedding at colonia lebarón in chihuahua. but minutes from la mora, rhonita's car broke down. were you with her when that happened? >> yeah, she was, like, right ahead of us. we were like, "thank goodness we're behind her, so we can give her a ride back." so, they all jumped in with us, and we dropped her off at the farm and headed out. >> and, uh, that was when rhonita went and borrowed loretta's vehicle? >> yeah. >> rhonita came in and let me know she'd broken down. she actually asked me -- she's like, "do you think that's a sign?" and i'm like, "well, you decide, but if you want to borrow my vehicle, there it is." >> by the time rhonita and her children headed out again, in loretta's vehicle, the convoy was no more. dawna was long gone, and christina ahead of them both. the next time any of them would see her, she'd be dead. >> dawna pulled up and saw her body, uh, lying on the ground. she was actually shot getting out of the vehicle, and they shot her instantly, we're thinking, through the heart, one bullet. >> me and my mom were up front in the car and we saw that christina was shot. my mom freaked out and started driving, and she, like, opened the car door so she could get out, and started shooting. >> how long did the shooting last? >> for me, forever. >> so, she gets back in, tries to start it and get out, and it won't start. >> i think they shot the engine or something. no, it wouldn't go. >> and then did anyone say anything? >> mom told us all to duck. she heard it. >> yeah. >> because i think she saw them before they started. >> why do you think that? >> well, because christina was shot, and you can see them from the mountain. >> what did you see? >> there was like three guys up on top, like very far away. you could, like, barely see them, but you could -- you could see that they had guns. and nothing happened for a while. and the brother moved because brixton was in the middle seat. [ voice breaking ] he didn't want him to get hit. he got in the -- the way. my mom freaked out. she saw us [sniffles], so she tried jumping out of her seat and she died. [ sobs ] >> were they shooting the whole time? do you remember that, devin? >> yeah. >> was anyone saying anything? was anyone screaming, or did you not even have time? >> just screaming. >> "just screaming." >> she hollers at the kids to get them on the floor. and interesting enough, the two kids that got on the floor were, uh, killed, and yet the ones that stayed sitting on the seats, five of them got shot up pretty bad, and then two of them didn't get any bullet wounds. >> i guess there were bullets just coming through the car? >> they, um, surprisingly only broke my window. >> but you were hit, right? >> yeah, i got -- i got shot in the foot. >> and you had rogan in your hands and you put -- did you put rogan on the floor? >> yeah. >> so, when you were hit, is that when he was hit, too? >> yeah. >> that must be very hard for you, kylie. i'm sorry. and what was happening in the back, devin? >> kids just panicking. they were trying to grab the stuff out of the back of the truck to cover themselves. >> what did you do? >> i was trying to get anything i would, and i saw trevor.. and lost it. >> 'cause you knew that trevor was dead? how did you know? >> i saw him on the floor. >> and even when the shooting stopped, did it feel like it was over? >> yeah, like, they just reloaded for another round. ♪♪ so you want to make the best burger ever? then make it! that means selling everything. and eating nothing but cheese till you find the perfect slice... even if everyone asks you... another burger truck? don't listen to them! that means cooking day and night until you get... how many miles? >> 14. >> wshew. that's a long way. and what happened as you walked back? >> i was in shock the entire time. >> yeah. >> for, like, the entire day. trying to still figure out what's going on. that was, like, the brain was processing it all. >> yeah. and did you know the way? >> kind of, but, uh, at the time, i just went up a mountain to see where i was, and i could see the highway. i just got on the highway and walked up a little more, and there was la mora. >> adam showed us the spot on the road where he and kenny's son andre finally found devin. you can hear their voices in this video that captured the first frantic moments as they tried to figure out who was still alive. >> driving right there, and christina were just... and then christina is dead on the floor right there, and then they started firing at us. >> what about her baby? >> her baby? actually, we do not know about her baby. we did not look in her truck, but christina is dead. >> so, how -- all five kids? how many is it, five? you have them hidden? do you know if there's, like -- are they all wounded? like, who got shot? which one of the kids are wounded? >> cody got shot in the face. >> who? >> cody. like, his whole face, right here, got shot. >> oh! okay, i'm gonna take you into my mom's house, because they're gonna take care of you. >> you got to tell us exactly where those -- those kids are. >> finding dawna and david's children were their only thought. devin's, too. kenny miller said neither the night nor the cartels could have stopped them heading down that road. the family's photos and video, taken hours later at the hospital, tell the story of what those children endured, blood-soaked and terrified at the side of the road, waiting to be rescued, the cartels still moving in the mountains around them. do you remember when they found you, cody? >> they put, um, everybody inside a ranger, and they put me inside a hospital truck. >> the ambulance? >> they put me inside the ranger. i was freezing cold, so i got a blanket and they gave me some burritos, and they were really good. >> because you were really hungry, right? >> yeah. >> the ambulance that carried the children came from this hospital we visited in the town of bavispe, that lies between la mora and the ambush site. >> hola. >> ¿cómo estás? >> muy bien. >> we wanted to meet the doctor adam said didn't hesitate when he asked him to head into the battle that night to help the children. >> [ speaking spanish ] >> 10 hours without drinking water, and real dry, real, uh... >> [ speaking spanish ] >> how much pain was that child in?
