I think andy made a good point when he said that this Impeachment Trial, which may very well be unconstitutional, in my view, is trying to distract from a lot of the problems that democrats otherwise have. President biden was elected on the platform that he was going to defeat the virus. One of the Neighbor Problems i think, in the lockdowns are going on, they seem unreasonable to people. They are encouraging people to violate the rules, to decide together on their own, because they see things like schools being shot down, even though the transmission of the virus and mortality rates amongst children are extremely, extremely low, and the harms that are being done to children by not being able to learn for a year, effectively, are very, very high. I think this is the main problem. Its not just about wearing masks, its not just about social distancing. Its got to be about the government imposing reasonable regulations that are well explained so that people will voluntarily comply with them, and i think states like california and new york are falling down on the job. Now john, you and leslie are out there on the west coast, theres been a lot of frustration with teachers in san francisco, but we hear this across the country, chicago and other places, and leslie, today it sounded like frustration from the mayor in chicago saying, almost an appeal to the teachers, not to the unions necessarily, but to say, haley, listen, get to your leadership because we have to have a conversation about getting these kids Back To School. They are supposed to start back up in chicago and we are being told by the Union Officials that they are probably not going to show up. Look, theres a lot of problems with this, and im going to try to keep it concise. First of all, every state, every city, every town has different numbers with regard to covid cases, and has different problems with regard to teachers and schools, but lets look at a few of the main common problems. One, teachers are scared. Some parents are scared. We dont have a vaccination even made yet for children. The vaccinations are for adults. Some teachers are fearful of getting those vaccines. We are seeing that not just among teachers. We are also seeing concern about cleanliness and crews cleaning the schools, so all of these things have to be addressed, and i believe they will, but people are afraid. There are two different mutations, variants of the virus that have hit our shores, so i feel, just had one week, it is not disastrous, he will eat the virus. As a matter of fact, he is already on a path higher than what he projected with more than a million vaccinations taking place per day. Kids well listen, my kids are home. I want them Back To School desperately, shannon, but we have to shannon nearly every parent. Here in new jersey, okay, a blue state, in my town, they took a survey of all parents at the school where my 7yearold goes. 88 of parents say we want our kids back in school, and they are back on a parttime basis. This was before they opened. But the president s plan certainly, shannon, is not aggressive enough. He went from 100 million doses to 150 million doses, and what that gets you by may, 150 million doses, it was less than a quarter of the u. S. Population being vaccinated. That doesnt get you anywhere near herd immunity, and the president needs to be much more aggressive on this. Meanwhile, you have an Impeachment Trial that will be coming up on february 8th, that is going to blot out the sun as far as the news cycle leading up to, during, and after, and it will delay, undoubtedly, covid relief from getting done. We keep hearing from well, congress and senate can multitask. Mayor Lori Lightfoot says despite sending three weeks with trying to open, if teachers are still refusing to report to classrooms. We see case rates going down. Are Positivity Rates lowered. We should be talking about how we get a deal done. That is what we should be focused on. And as you can imagine, many parents are not happy about this. My 10yearold son is a fifthgrader, and he is upset every day. He wants me to find a way to get the schools open. He wants to be around kids. He wants to see his friends. Its very hard for them. The Chicago Teachers Union wants every member vaccinated before they go back to work, but critics say it is an unnecessary delay, and kids are the ones getting hurt. The unions have discovered that this is something that they can use, i guess, to get more gains for their members in other ways. Teaching is an in person job. Its always been an in person job. And there is good reason for that. And children need socialization in person. Officials tell fox news the new warning is centered on historic inauguration date of march 4th, when president s use to be sworn in before 1937. I think what is interesting in this part is there nothing in that bulletin, if you read it, that says that there is anything new there. This is all information that has been out in the public in one manner or another. The last bulletin of the department issued was back in january of 2020, after the death of general soleimani, where we wanted to alert the American People that iran could retaliate through a cyber attack, which is very different. A different threat that we wanted to connect with the American People. But again, if you look at what is in this bulletin, there is nothing new. This type of information, these types of threats, general threats, have been out there since the election, certainly since the sixth, as we continue to move forward. Both the timing is a little a little interesting, as well as some of the wording in the bulletin itself. Shannon it does talk about all kinds of groups, but specifically about people who were mad about covid19 restrictions and people who were unhappy about the 2020 election results. Weve got that combined with what in many ways feels like a police state, National Guardsmen by the thousand who are going to be kept here for several more weeks we understand. What is the message being sent to america . Well, again, the message, i think, for this bulletin is really coming out of the januar. I think if you didnt have a 6th, you would not have this bulletin. But it also misses some of the violent activities that we see on the west coast, specifically areas like portland, seattle, on the 20th, on inauguration day, and that we see over the weeken. That is not specifically called out in the bulletin. There is language you could say kind of mentions it, but i would like to have seen that called out a little more specifically, as well, but i think this bulletin is tied back to january the 6th, again, if the 6th had not happened, i dont think you wouldve seen this. Shannon okay, lets talk about the southern border wall, anything you are very involved with during your time with the trump administration. The white house proclamation on stopping everything at the southern border wall from President Biden says building his massive wall that spans the entire southern border, it is not a serious solution. It diverts money from genuine threats to our Homeland Security. Cdp concerning today that all activity on the southern border has been stopped as far as building the wall. Your reaction . My initial reaction is the terminology talking about spanning the entire length of the border is just nonsense. It is not what we talked about the last three and a half, four years. The Border Wall System was being built did not span the entire 2,000mile border. It was put in very specific locations, hightraffic locations, where Border Patrol had a very difficult time putting agents in. We wanted to make sure that we increased the surveillance there, increased the impedance and deny all the Border Wall System provides, and so i disagree with the notion it was going to be deployed along l 2,000 miles of the wall, or the border. That is simply not the case. That was never our intention, never the plan, and again, if you listen to the Men And Women of the Border Patrol, they will tell you they need an effective Border Wall System that goes without physical infrastructure, but also the cameras, roads, lighting, fiberoptic cable, sensors, everything helps them do their job better so they can allocate and reallocate resources to areas of the border that needed the most. Shannon what do you quickly make of the fact that the new administration, which obviously have their own Executive Powers in order so they can use when i come in, targeted so much about the trump administration, what you had worked on with regard to immigration, wall, silent, all kinds of things come undone very quickly by these Executive Orders. I think my primary issue with that, as the country is facing not only global pandemic, but also an economic crisis, trying to get millions of americans back to work, i am concerned that some of these Executive Orders, some of these actions we have seen in the early days is actually going to increase immigration or Border Security crisis when the country really doesnt need one. So you have to be very careful about some of these policies, and again, executive or orders being issued. That you dont have Unintended Consequences of actually inciting, you know, having folks come to the border illegally, more so than we would see, what we call a surge. In making sure the border remains is the primary purpose of what the Border Patrol is trying to do. I think some of the executive actions we have seen, some of the legislation, would may have the opposite effect that they are trying to accomplish. Shannon yeah, we hear folks who believe there is an invitation to them to come from very difficult circumstances where they are, and we know from our Border Control that regardless of who is in the white house, they have a very difficult job and we think those Men And Women for doing that. We are talking about solutions that we are not asking anybody to sacrifice, but add to their advantage. Shannon so lets bring in president of the International Union of operating engineers, terry mcgowan, for reaction to these executive actions. Terry, good to have you with us. I think it is important to hear people personally, have a name and a face to go with these numbers on these stories. Can you tell us about the impact and what has happened so far . Well, actually i am the president of wisconsin, and wisconsin is home to two of the largest Pipeline Contractors in america. A great deal of our 10,000 members are pipe liners, and they are facing the reality of losing these good paying jobs. We had plas signed last year with the contractors, and they were goodpaying, familysupporting jobs with good benefits. Trans canada already committed to buying 150 million worth of u. S. Made steel pipe, and we had been talking with the contractors, been talking with the owner, over the course of the last two months, and suddenly come on inauguration day, we kind of had the rug pulled out from underneath us, and i was really unexpected. Transcanada has done everything they could with the in units. They made them equity partners. They invested 23 million in the native american businesses. They had a goal of 350 million. They have invested 76 million, women owned businesses, 57 million in veteran owned businesses. They thought they were doing everything right, and their biggest investment were the workers. Shannon yeah, and now it sounds like thousands of those jobs are going away or have gone away. I want to play something from gina mccarthy, white house National Climate advisor. Her suggestion for what some of the folks losing their job can do. Here is what she said. They need a place to go, and we are looking at opportunities for them in oil and gas fields, to close the minds that have been left behind, to close sure. The spewing pollution all the time. Use the skill sets, keeping them home. Shannon terry, she says they would work in oil and gas, use their skill sets to close down what used to be their source of work. What do you think . Yeah, and ive got people who have trained their entire life for this field of work. And you know what . Our work is already down over the past year, 24 nationwide. And this might seem like a big victory to the environmentalists, but oil will be transported, canadian oil will be transported, whether by air, rail, barge, or truck, and in the last years, the rail of canadian oil has increased 180 and emitted 40 more Greenhouse Gases than a pipeline. Now, i dont know what sort of training or retraining they want us to really do. I might also point out that if you really pipeline, a pipeline is 25 times safer than a rail. It is 38 times safer than a barge, and it is a 3,000 times safer than if you bring it by truck. Now, until fossil fuels are phased out, which is going to be quite a long time if its done, this canadian oil is going to come through the United States by one of those modes of transportation. Shannon well, those are the options, and for now, it seems like there are more limitations that are coming, so terry, we wish you and all the folks you represent the very best in navigating through this.
