Placemaking Presentation and Workshop on How Good Food Seeds Great Places
William H. Whyte famously said, "If you want to seed a place with activity, the first thing to do is to put out food."
Join PlacemakingUS for a good practices workshop that illustrates the cornucopia of ways the local food system and placemaking intersect to create vibrant, economically inclusive, ecologically responsive and social and mental health-enhancing environments.
We'll tackle a range of topics including:
Placemaking the Farmers Markets
Urban Agriculture & Community Gardens
Mobile Food Vendors, Pop-ups and Micro-Entrepreneurism
Local Food Policy
Wayfinding & Beautification approaches to Local Food
Food as a Tool for Community Engagement with Underserved Communities
Food Funding Mechanisms, Micro-financing and Economic Development
Interactions between food and other sectors including Arts, Health and Education
Connections between Placemaking, Permaculture, Waste Streams and Climate Change
As a placemaker or place manager, you know how important food is to seeding your place, but in this session we will deep dive into a buffet full of low hanging fruit you can harvest to increase your impact.
This session will be lead by Ryan Smolar, the initiator of the PlacemakingUS network, and co-leader of one of the largest food policy councils in the US for nearly a decade. His organization, Long Beach Fresh, has helped create several local farms and gardens, placemade the local farmers' market and has helped finance micro-businesses which are now some of the most recognized brick and mortars of the town's food scene.
PlacemakingUS is working on a Food Placemaking Good Practices Guide, and your ticket cost and participation in this session will help make this information more available everywhere.
PlaceamkingUS is a 501c(3) non-profit project of Social Environmental Entrepreneurs. Our mission is to "bring together placemakers from around the world to help communities create better places."
