Despite canceling its in-person spring marathon, Cincinnati’s Flying Pig Marathon announced plans Tuesday for several events that people can participate in virtually this weekend.During what was supposed to be Cincinnati’s Flying Pig Marathon weekend, officials said runners and walkers can participate in several socially distanced, smaller in-person running and walking events across Greater Cincinnati.There will also be opportunities for participants to take pictures of their accomplishments and submit them virtually.Officials said there will be a Finish Swine installed at the pedestrian walkway on Freedom Way at The Banks this Sunday from 9:30 to 11 a.m.Mascots and Flying Pig Marathon staff will be on hand to congratulate all virtual participants.“We want to get back to in-person events as quickly and safely as possible, but for right now, we are planning these smaller get-togethers so we can celebrate the accomplishments of our participants as they take part in this spring’s Flying Pig events,” said Pig Works CEO Iris Simpson Bush.There are still plans to hold a full Flying Pig Marathon in late October, alongside the Queen Bee Half Marathon, organizers said. Those in-person events are slated for Oct. 29 through 31.Officials said details on the combined events will be announced this weekend.All Flying Pig Marathon events were canceled in 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic.The marathon has been consistently ranked as one of the top marathons in America, according to a survey from an online running community.The Flying Pig started in 1997 as a conversation among friends.
