Sugarcane framers in the North whose farms were affected by storm surges during severe tropical cyclone Yasa have been encouraged to take up rice farming while waiting for their farms to recover in the next four months.
Minister for Agriculture Dr Mahendra Reddy offered the suggestion during a recent meeting with the senior management of the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC).
The meeting was mainly to discuss strategies that will assist farmers affected by the salt water intrusion in the low lying coastal areas.
Most of the farms in low lying areas of Nagigi, Korovatu, Vunika, Wailevu and Tiri settlement of Tabucola had been affected.
