Carol Ann Duffy’s collection The World’s Wife, borne from the tenets of third wave feminism, successfully rewrites male dominated authorship. It presents the reader with female figures that, although not always admirable, are unfailingly strong. It is a celebration of female autonomy and sexuality, but most importantly about the strength of women. The complexity of the female experience is presented in a nuanced, and often witty, manner. In re-creating well-known stories Duffy does not eradicate the ‘traditional’ form but expands them by adding ‘extra layers of truth’, redefining the male and female role, challenging the stereotypes that confront both genders.
