Hospitalization is very low but at the same time closing dining, keeping people staying at home, what does this do to balance the Health Crisis and the economy. You get right at it. We have to protect lives and protect livelihoods. One of the new problems with the lockdown orders, all counties in Southern California are lumped in together. The fact that you have los angeles and san diego in the new same category, our icu capacity is very different than los angeles and yet we have another change in the rules and regulations. We have another one size fits all policy. In californians are hurting, particularly our Small Businesses who have followed the rules. They have done everything they have been asked to. Once again to get a new executive order from the governor that is not, and i repeat not based on science when we say, when he says youre going to cut down on Outdoor Dining, you will cut down on the familys ability to take your kids to a playground its not working. Jackie okay lets talk about that for a second because there are two components locking people down. We have to talk about enforceability. You can shut the restaurants, tell the businesses, tell people they cant go out. At the same time we know from thanks giving for example, a lot of people traveled, even people who didnt travel were potentially spreading the virus in their homes just because they were gathering for example. You could see people gathering in their homes as social outlet, because were all dealing with covid19 fatigue here and still have a serious problem on your hands, correct . Yeah. Exactly. You have to remind folks. We have one goal. How will we keep everybody safe . Do not get complacent. To wear that mask. Practice social distancing. To continue to do the right thing. At the same time be able to strike that balance so you can particular hi protect your Small Businesses who have been following the rules, who have been doing the right thing and again to see this new executive order that comes down again with no science based that Outdoor Dining is in any way contributing to the spread of covid19, that is why youre seeing the frustration. That is why youre seeing the anger, not just here in Southern California but up and down the entire state. When youre going to essentially be putting folks out of business right now with no help and support and particularly in california where unemployment department, we have over 500,000 californians trying to get their unemployment support but havent been able to do that, there is a lot wrong with what is happening right now in sacramento. Jackie let me ask you this, im not sure if you have particular insight to add, im sure you can comment on it. Were looking at a stimulus package. Not as grand as the democrats were hoping, a little less than a trillion dollars. One aspect that wont be included is the 1200dollar stimulus checks. There is 300dollar extra weekly unemployment benefit there. Yeah. Jackie it will extend the freeze on evictions. There will be a second rounded of ppp to potential hi help Small Businesses. Some democrats said if 1200dollar checks are not in there were not signing off on this. Your comments what congress is bringing together . My sense weve seen a lot of momentum particularly the last week and rightfully so. We need a lot of help and support particularly for our Small Businesses. Folks need that extra help and support. Im more positive than i have been in the last five weeks to get the stimulus bill across the finish line. We need it. Time to get it done. Jackie im looking at new york city specifically. Governor cuomo had a new metric he would judge indoor dining. He said if hospitalizations, if the rate wouldnt increase in five days he would shut down the indoor dining. This city is devastated. It would have huge impact. Mayor de blasio our mayor. He closed the schools down but is opening them again. Doesnt this all seem chaotic and confusing to you . It does. That is part of why were pushing back so hard particularly out here in california. Again when we see a continuing changing of the rules, a moving of the goal posts, when families have been doing the right thing and when we have said to our folks to be outdoors, take your kids and family out there, follow the science and yet we get new orders that dont follow the science yet well shut down Outdoor Dining at least in the case of california saying you cant go out to a play ground, you will have to shut down, that is incredulous. It doesnt make any sense for anybody. It undermines what weve been trying to do to keep everybody safe, get on the other side of this. Jackie hhhs secretary azar says there will be a vaccine all will have access to but it wont be until mid 2021. Dr. Birx said, yes, a vaccine is a great thing but it will not save us from the current spike were seeing right now. Do you think this country, states individually, municipalities have until what it takes to make it until mid 2021 . Were all in this together. Well all mushing hard. I have one goal as mayor of san diego, to keep everybody healthy and safe. Well try to keep open our Small Businesses and economy. It is not a either or situation. That is what ive been strongly advocating before. We have to continue to do the right thing as i said. Those vaccines will being on the way but in the meantime we have to make sure our elected officials are actually putting down policies that have a basis in reality. That have a basis in science. Unfortunately that is not what weve seen with the latest round out here in california. Jackie quick last question, so many differing opinions on this. Each individual citizen operating as part of this will have their own opinion as well, in california, riverside county, the sheriff said there he wont be used or his group wont be used as muscle, for example, to enforce newsoms orders. He called them, he said it was dictatorial kind of attitude. Your thoughts on enforcement . Will people abide by this even if you shut the businesses down . Again, when i think youre seeing once you lose some of that faith in what is coming out from some of your elected officials and the hypocrisy it makes it very difficult. I said clearly you cant ticket your way out of covid19. You have to make sure youre educating, doing the right approach, keeping people safe, constantly doing the right thing. What people dont spanned to very well threats from sacramento that well cut off your funding if you dont do x, y or z. That is no way to approach this. I think it is incredibly important that you continue to do the right thing, push very hard with folks to follow those safety guidelines but as i said before, youre not going to ticket your way out of covid19. I spoke to the deputy a little while ago. He is in good spirits. I wish him a recovery. The whole incident is under investigation. The accused will have his opportunity to respond in court. I dont want to lose focus of the issue that is hundreds of Small Businesses that are suffering. They cannot sustain themselves. They are going to be forced to close whether it is restaurants and hair salons been shut down by Governor Cuomos arbitrary restrictions. These are individuals who are about to lose their livelihood. The governor is saying, perhaps on monday they may have a full shutdown of new York City Restaurants that would be tragic and for some of these restaurants, that i know in the community, it will be the last straw. They will close their doors for good. I think about the employees that are this, how will they support their families. Were coming up on the holiday season. So the entire situation is very tragic. We really urge the governor to reconsider some of the arbitrary restrictions put in place, not just for the restaurants but the houses of worship which the Supreme Court ruled against last week and also for our schools that need to be reopened because children need to get an education. I always stood by the men and women in uniform because they do a very difficult and dangerous job. What were asking for a reasonable approach to reopening our economy. We want to insure that we keep in mind that we know more about this virus than we did six months ago. Studies have shown that the lockdowns and shutdowns dont work. Were seeing this happen in states across the country. Were also seeing a mayor that shut down our school system, defying the science that our children dont transmit the virus. We have students now not in school. We have Public Schools Athletic League programs not in place. This is affecting the mental health, the physical health of our young people. So you know the damage being done by lockdowns and shutdowns mentally, people are reaching their point of desperation. Jackie absolutely. A huge issue. Well you know its tricky, because if that report gives, gives away information that youre concerned that certain targets of the investigation may adjust their behavior or do things in reaction to it, i get and understand why john is asking for that. It is not a bad idea. It might be a little bit tricky but keep in mind a special counsel like this, it is very difficult to get rid of. You can only terminate or fire a special counsel if there is misconduct or conflict of interest. It was a good move by the attorney general to designate durham in this manner. Jackie harmeet, ratcliff says that there was fisa abuse. That it was clear and that people need to go to jail. I mean youve got a, folks, center group of folks saying this probe, this report, it cannot be dropped. We have to get answers here. Absolutely and when our attorney general converted this probe that was initially sort of an investigatory, regulatory type of a probe into a criminal investigation which he did before the election but secretly, he actually specifically authorized both an interim written report and a written final report in a form that may be released to the public. So a sitting attorney general clearly had the intention to make sure the public is reassured whatever happened here we get to the bottom of it, we names. We make sure that this doesnt happen again. So the secondary goal is also to make sure that the next president , if that is joe biden, does not interfere with it. Im sure this issue will come up in Senate Confirmation hearings if we get to that point of an attorney general under the biden administration. Jackie brett, before we get to what joe biden is going to do about this i just want to stick with bill barr for a second because he did come out and said there was no evidence of widespread voter fraud. People were sort of thinking maybe there was some, you know, upset within the trump camp that he may not stay on, fox news a doj official told fox news today barr intends to stay in his post as long as the president needs him. In the days ahead up to january 20th, does barrs role, if he stays on, is that crucial or essential, if some reason he steps away, could we see this go another way . You know ive confirmed as well with some sources in doj that the attorney general remains on the job and intent on staying on the job for as long as the president would like him to. So i think that is appropriate. There is still a lot of work and effort that has to go forward. But i think right now you have issues, when you talk about the election fraud, for example, i think the attorney general was speaking about what he had seen so far, what had come across on his desk. There was still a lot to be uncovered. I dont have a problem with him indicating that but were certainly seeing now more than we have ever seen. I may not agree with everything Law Enforcement does. Law enforcement does not need reforming. Not every cop is a bad cop as folks try to say like aoc, i represent a police organization, and a National Police organization. There are a lot of good officers out there. So when you talk about this i really believe that as legislators theyre doing more harm than good. Yes, reform the police. Certainly not defund the police. People in chicago snead the police, especially in these povertystricken areas where violence runs wild. We have to have common sense discussing these issues. Those elected in these particular positions, aoc and others are not implementing common sense. Creating a dangerous narrative where people are dieing. There is a quality of life problem for citizens who live in a city like chicago or new york city. Ive done extensive reporting here how some people left because of the pandemic. Because of the violence and fearfulness at this point. The city is losing revenue. It will be very difficult to regain that revenue and to attract people to come back. So not only are you creating an unsafe environment but potentially longterm, harming the longevity of your city . Not only that, the trauma it causes. I will be honest. I grew up in neighborhoods very, very dangerous where people were shooting left around right. What i was able to afford to be in a better environment, just going back to visit my family, gave me trauma. Im being very honest when i say it. It doesnt bring me any pride to say it. What a lot of folks in the city of chicago are going through, on the southwest side of chicago, other parts of the city. That is why it is important for chicago wants to take this moment to realize you have to replace Lori Lightfoot the mayor of chicago because she has not made it safe. She has not made eight destination city. She made it partially helped to create a hellhole environment for the people that live there.
