President trump pulling the plug on talks for a new covid19 relief bill. The president blaming the decision on House Speaker nancy pelosi accusing her of not negotiating in good faith, saying that talks will resume after the election. In an overnight tweet the president called for congressional action on a standalone bill for a new round of 1,200 stimulus checks which he says hes ready to sign right now, calling for you approval on another 25 billion in aid for airlines and 135 billion for the Payroll Protection Program, saying both can be paid for with unused funds from the cares act. Jerome powell issuing his strongest warning about the countrys Economic Outlook. Hes warning that too little Government Intervention would lead to a weak recovery and cause unnecessary Economic Hardship and a more generous relief package would not be wasted. An update to a story i first broke here, President Trump has authorized the release of all documents of what he calls the, quote, single greatest political crime in American History, the russia hoax as well as the Hillary Clinton email scandal. The director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe declassified John Brennans handwritten notes showing that he had briefed then president obama on Hillary Clintons plan to tie candidate donald trump to russia and collusion. Here we are on the doorstep toro the Earnings Period for the Third Quarter. Give us your take on the backdrop of this economy as this market looks higher for the day today. Well, weve had almost kind of a Twilight Zone experience here. Weve never really been here. We had we had a two month recn that lasted march and april. The economy bottomed in april. Since may weve had a vshaped recovery through the september data. Its not a forecast, just a description of what weve actually seen. The economys done remarkably well making a comeback here. That doesnt mean that earnings are going to turn around right you away. The Third Quarter numbers are probably going to be Something Like down 30 of 30 but i think, again, thats probably the bottom and were going to see earnings recovering into next year. Maria so you are expecting then a vshaped recovery . Well, i think we have had a vshaped recovery so far and i think that theres enough stimulus still left from the first round of checks that were sent to people during the spring, combined with zero Interest Rates that have kept Mortgage Rates at historical lows so what were seeing here is a housingled boom thats offsetting the challenges faced by some of the Service Industry as a result of the pandemic. So i dont know that its going to continue to be straight up. It could start to swoosh kind of like the nike swoosh, but i think were still on a recovery path. Maria yeah, but what about fed chief jay powell said yesterday . He said the economy needs a more aggressive fiscal and monetary stimulus to recover, also said that the economy still has a long way to go, ed. I think he was pretty much suggesting that, yeah, get together in washington because we need more fiscal stimulus. Will the economy continue to grow even though these talks have now ended between the white house and Speaker Pelosi . Look, what the pandemic has done is gotten the fed very much involved in lobbying for fiscal stimulus. In the past, the fed rase end fed was independent, didnt make any comments on fiscal policy but you apparently theyre so concerned about the economy that they dont believe that even what theyve done and what they continue to do is going to be enough and i think we are going to get some another round of stimulus. I know the president broke off the negotiations yesterday but this is the guy who wrote the book, the art of the deal, and sometimes to make a deal you walk out of the room. Maria yeah, thats funny. Youre right. Lets talk handicap the next couple of weeks for us, ed. Were going to be getting Third Quarter earnings beginning next week. Well get a full picture of what the Third Quarter looked like in the coming weeks as well as hopefully get guidance for the Fourth Quarter from the s p 500. The bank is going to kick thinks off on the 13th when jp morgan reports. What are your expectations for earnings here . Again, the economy tanked in the second quarter. In the Third Quarter, real gdp is probably going to be up Something Like 30 . When you do year over year comparisons in earnings which is the way we look at it, gdp were not looking at year over year, were looking at kind of quarter over quarter and annualizing, on that basis the economy looks pretty good on a real gdp basis. On an earnings basis were probably going to be down 30 on a year over year basis. I think we basically bottomed on earnings in the middle of the year. Maria so you want to buy stocks here or of you want to hold on, on the sidelines . Well, you know, its hard for me to tell anybody at this point to jump in the market if theyre just if they just have totally missed. Ive been bullish for quite some time. Im still bullish. I think the markets up trend is intact and will continue. I dont see a recession in 2021 or 2022. If thats the case, i dont see another bear market anytime soon. Maria well leave it there. Stimulus talks called off, President Trump announced that he is pulling the plug on negotiations for another coronavirus aid bill until after the election day at the earliest. He says House Democrats are looking for billions of dollars in aid to bail out high crime cities with little money related to covid19. The move comes after months of talks between treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin and House Speaker nancy pelosi. Pelosi slammed the president s announcement, even reportedly blaming the president s decision on side effects from the Covid Treatment drugs hes recently received during a call with other democrats. Meanwhile, the wall street journal this morning Editorial Board slams pelosi calling her demands for 2 trillion a ransom on taxpayers. President trump tweeted last night that maybe he wants a more narrow bill for the airlines. I dont think theres going to be a deal, maria, just because they cant agree on a topline number. Republicans in the senate dont want to spend 2 trillion. I think the only thing that could get really the parties to get serious is if the market drops significantly and unless that happens, i mean, were just so close to the election, even if they get a deal, getting it through the senate is going to be very difficult. It doesnt seem like Mitch Mcconnell wants a big deal. So im not optimistic on a deal right now. Maria yeah. I mean, the journal Editorial Board writes that nancy pelosi continues to come back with lots of items in a bill like money for the cities and locals that have not governed very responsibly. Also cannabis is one of the main features in her bill. Whats your take on is she politicking, just trying to taunt the president with all of this stuff . I think theres a lot of finger pointing right now. I mean, certainly whether its the big 3. 4 trillion bill that the House Democrats passed in may or even more when they scaled it down to a little bit over 2 trillion, there were parts of those bills that are just unacceptable to republicans and nancy pelosi knows that. Thats part of the negotiation. But you know, there have been endless talks between mark meadows, the chief of staff, Steven Mnuchin, the trishly secretary andtreasury secretary and pelosi. No matter how much they talk theyre not going to agree on state funding or election funding. I cant see them getting over the hump especially when the political temperature is so hot right now. Maria yeah. Dagen mcdowell, jump in. Dagen just want to point out that the Sticking Point was nancy pelosi wanted about a half a trillion dollars to bail out the blue states. Those states versus the red states have already gotten an outsized portion of the rescue money that went out earlier this year. The Trump Administration was willing to come up to a quarter of a trillion dollars. That was really the issue. I dont believe, my opinion, that nancy pelosi was ever going to move a stimulus package, another rescue bill before the election. She literally stood by and watched all of those Airline Workers on the cusp of getting laid off. However, the way that President Trump yesterday walked away from the stimulus negotiations, he now owns the fact that no more money is going to go out and theres still nearly 12 million americans collecting state unemployment benefits. Yeah. And listen, Nancy Pelosis been pushed by some of her vulnerable members, her democrats in trump districts who have pushed her to get a deal that see this kind of this fighting, infighting among democrats and republicans and the part themselves and it looks a bit childish. So that did move her to at least i think pass another bill but did it really do anything . No, it didnt. Were still stuck in this basically impasse and thats not going to change anytime soon. I do think maybe they could pass a narrow bill on airlines because both the president and the speaker have said that but a big bill, im doubtful. Mike pence and Kamala Harris will face off during the seasons only 2020 Vice President ial debate tonight. Its happening in Salt Lake City. The two candidates will be 12 feet apart, separated by plexiglass. Give us your take on what will be discussed tonight and what strategy will come to foreon each side. Mike pence did well in his debate against tim cane four years ago. He was widely seen as the winner of that debate. And the pressure is on the Vice President to pick up this ticket. The dow futures are up 157 points, nasdaq futures up 50 of, s p 500 up 16 on a quarter, on the rise this morning after a decline yesterday. It was a volatile one yesterday. Markets fell at the close after President Trump walked away from the stimulus talks with Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The president tweeted no more stimulus talks until after the election. We saw with the first president ial debate that it was a hot mess and so people are expecting more policy this time over personality. But as we also saw in the president ial democratic primary debate, harris can come across pretty is tha is thatbrett s d very aggressive. Hold on. Thats sort of your stereo typical woman on a debate stage talk. Maria no, no, no, you have to Kamala Harris, the way she attacked brett kavanaugh. She did you attack brett kavanaugh. In a series of tweets overnight the president called for congressional action on a standalone bill for a new round of 1,200 stimulus checks which he said hes ready to sign right now. He is calling for approval on another 25 billion in aid to airlines and 135 billion for the Payroll Protection Program. He says both can be paid for with unused funds from the cares act. First up, looking at futures this morning, were expecting a pretty good rally underway, the major averages erasing gains yesterday, closing near the lows of the day, retreating from one month highs after the president tweeted about halting stimulus talks until after the election. You heard what jay powell said as well, the country needs a stimulus plan to recover. Dominic, your thoughts on where we are in terms of stimulus, the election now 26 days away and where we are in terms of the market tied to those events. Well, we clearly got a little punch in the gut yesterday based on the tweet that we got from the president and chairman powell was very clear and has been very clear. This economy still needs some support. Not everybody is equal here. Not every individual, not every corporation needs help. But clearly there are people out there, there are corporations of out there, the airlines, unemployed, that could use a little bit of help to get us through the last part of this crisis. We have one quarter to go. We have to get through this election. But if the economy and people can get some support, both from the fed and from washington, we can get through the finish line here. So we need some help. Hopefully these two parties come together and come to a compromise. But theres got to be some support to the economy to get us through the Fourth Quarter here. Maria yeah. I mean, look, he ended the phase for talks so hes talking about resuming this after the election. Weve got earnings coming out in the next couple weeks. That will likely be a driver. Goldman sachs, jp morgan, bank of america all will report Third Quarter results beginning next week on the 13th. Wall street predictions are trickling in. What are you expecting from the big banks next week . Maria, its going to be exciting. We expect earnings to be incredible, especially with the political overlays. There will be lots and lots to look at. We like banks and financials here. Were going to see earnings from jp morgan, Goldman Sachs, citibank, bank of america. And we think that this will boost this sector. Analysts are expecting that these u. S. Consumer banks will get hit on the top line interesn 30 and 60 in profits because of the coronavirus. Even though there is going to be some downplay, were not going to see them be on that kind of scale. Because of m a, underwriting, Mortgage Applications all of those fees will hit the top and bottom line of the banks despite low Interest Rates so were going to see a better than expected outlook from the banks and i think that will move this sector. Maria all right. Well, then that means its not priced in yet and well get some news that investors will react to. Luke, lets talk policy for a second. Going into the election, now just a few weeks away, can you navigate which sectors are going to be poised to see an impact . Listen, we expect volatility to remain elevated until year end. Weve got the election. A democratic sweep is not priced in equities at the moment. We have covid19, earnings season starting next week and we have concerns over a stimulus package. Its starting to affect wall street. If we look back to march, april and may we saw mom and pop shops shut down because they were forced to. That was the first round of layoffs. Were starting to see wall street lay off workers. I think this is the second round of layoffs. Tech and healthcare were winners before. I think theyll continue to be winners Going Forward. Stick with your winners, get rid of your losers. Tech and healthcare were the only sectors that benefited from the covid19 pandemic. With the uncertainty, there is one thing for certain. The flu is right around the corner. Well, i always said from the beginning, maria, just read the dossier itself and you know that it is a fake document, it falls by itself with its ridiculous information. Now, this new information, why has it taken years to get to the bottom here . First, you know, it took almost, what, a year or more to find out who paid for the dossier. Now to find out that president obama himself was briefed on a plan here to villify trump. Thats really remarkable. Its remarkable that its taken so long, frankly so long that its not a big issue in the campaign anymore which is really dominated by the virus and the economy. Its a shame this wasnt done six months ago. Maria thats right. But the other issue was the Mueller Report. Okay. How come Robert Mueller did not uncover this . How come the ig report, Michael Horowitz did not uncover it . Were they just hiding these documents . I mean, weve had major investigations into this. The senate Intel Committee, like i said, Robert Mueller, a year of torture of Robert Mueller and all of the suspense around him and 40 million. Lets not forget the 40 million that was spent on that, that was taxpayer money. And most importantly, tens of millions of people were led down a rabbit hole of a story that didnt exist. For which there was a pretty logical explanation here, that Opposition Research was being paid for that didnt really have any substance. And yes, thats right, the Mueller Report, all of those in the justice department, really didnt reveal, those footnotes that we know that said that the subsource completely discredited the use of any of his testimony in the dossier, that the dossier was paid for by the opposition party. All of these things have come out too little, too late. And youre right, this wasnt in the Mueller Report. It wasnt even in the ig report, clearly, and it should have been. This thing should have been exposed years earlier for what it was. Maria yeah. And letes not forget a little thing called liberty and our rights. Carter page and others were wiretapped for no reason, other than that they were tied to trump. There were no charges ever lobbed against carter page and he had his life turned upside down. As Lindsey Graham said recently, i think hes going to be a very rich man, i see a major lawsuit coming. Let me switch gears to Salt Lake City tonight, mark. Because Vice President mike pence and Kamala Harris will face off tonight in the only Vice President ial debate in the election season. I want to get your insights. Due to covid19 restrictions both candidates will be behind plexiglass, theyll stand 12 feet apart. What are you expecting tonight . Well, i think that each has a slightly different mission. I think that Kamala Harris likes to be an aggressive debater, but in general people are looking for debaters who are maybe a little bit less aggressive, so shes going to be making that choice. I think on the other hand, Vice President pence tends to be a calm, careful debater and yet if he doesnt score a knockout punch and really suggest strongly that harris is too far to the left, hes not going to have a debate victory. So youre either going to have a really dull debate where everyone plays it safe or youre going to have another food fight. I think people are more likely to play it safe after the last one. Maria tell me about your polling and insights about the election in terms of where we are. Youve got a great Vantage Point in terms of feeling where the peoples sentiment is. What do you see now with just 25 plus days to go . Well, its a tricky time, because we dont know what the impact of the president having the virus was. He had a chance to kind of reset. I think people were seeing the economy improving. Look, i think the virus and the economy are the two key issues. The president winning on the economy, losing on the virus. He hasnt been able to turn that around or really leverage the economy. I dont see the Supreme Court or other issues, while theyre important issues, theyre not really the decisive ones right now and i think that weve got to look into seniors are showing significant i think erosion of the president s camp. If they dont come back and he doesnt win them back, thats really where i think he could have mounting losses here. Well see, well have a new poll next week in a rapidly changing situation. Maria what about this declassification . Will that impact anything . As people understand fully what took place here, that it was all one big lie . I wish it would. I think actually here whats going to have to happen is, if trump doesnt win, barr is going to have to make durham an actually independent counsel. I expect this investigation will take another six months or another year itself because so much information has been buried here and this is no time that i think a full airing of these documents could really happen. Theres too much else on the public plate. Thats why we needed this to happen before, more likely the real reckoning here is post election. Maria i think youre right about an independent counsel. Amazon responded in a statement saying this, all Large Organizations attract the attention of regulators and we welcome that. The presumption that success can only be the result of anticompetitive behavior is simply wrong. Dagen, this from amazon. Dagen this report from democrats and the republicans dont necessarily aagree with the policy prescriptions in it, but they republicans and democrats are on the same page in calling out these vast monopolies and this increases the likelihood of additional laws and regulations on these companies. A much greater focus on any acquisition that they make in the future, because quite frankly, a company like facebook has been out there for years snapping up any even potential competitor and in some cases just shutting it down and keeping the employees. That will stop in the coming years and quite frankly all of these giant Tech Companies should be very afraid of whats coming down the road and investors should pay attention. After all, google does control i believe 90 of search, in the search, they have 90 market share. So are these companies too dominant to just do what they want and suppress information for some people that they dont agree with . Gianno well, you just answered your own question, maria. If you look at the reporting, it was said that employees at google were looking to do the exact same thing in 2020 but it would be worse. What weve seen is news organizations actually take up that battle as well by making everything so bad and harsh that people dont even trust the media anymore. You have seen what social Media Companies have done and you see what theyll continue to do. The latest out of virginia where there have been mailbox breakins reported. Gianno, how is this impacting the remaining four weeks on the campaign trail for both candidates . Gianno well, i mean, when you talk about a number of states sending out ballots to people who might have moved, so you have a number of ballots that could be at house, 15, whatever the number could be and people could illegally vote for other individuals, i think thats problematic. The Harris Foundation voter database shows 1200 real instances of voter fraud where there were actual convictions. Considering the fact that weve seen more ballots sent out than ever before, this certainly will change what the election could have been. Thats why i think its so important, as President Trump says, his supporters should go out and vote in person because we dont know if votes are actually being counted. She reports that there are duplicate ballots that have been received as well as ballots for the deceased and ballots for voters who moved to other addresses, this is morry county, new jersey. And then the story that you mentioned earlier that there were several reports, several post offices that the blue mailboxes were broken into and tampered with. I think some prid pried open wih crowbars. This is in central virginia, not far from where i grew up. The largest city in the nation, new york, new york county, manhattan and out in brooklyn, remember the story in brooklyn where the ballots were sent to the wrong people and one woman got an incorrect ballot from someone she knew in the neighborhood and called the county board of elections in brooklyn. We want to be exposed to sectors that are going to benefit from that, so weve liked technology and Consumer Discretionary Communications Services health care for us if we think the economy is going to grow close to 4 next year, we are positive, so we are looking for a higher market, maybe we see the s p, 5, 6 higher than where we are right now by end of this year then really, 13 or 14 higher, are by the end of next year, so ebb weve been talking to go our clients about taking advantage of big down days, retail clients in general have a lot of cash on sidelines if they want to get in the market we have been encouraging them industry to step in when opportunity presence itself. I dont think most retail servers making bets on this what weve tried to do, is position our clients, for the economy that we see afterwards, really no matter who is is elected president. S. Tell me about business during this pandemic, it feels like if you didnt have an ability to adapt to deliver mechanisms you were out in the cold but if you did have that that expertise you saw business go up, how would you characterize the pandemic of business . Well, whole foods case we saw accounts decline because we do so much business in prepared foods, so, when they close offices lunchtime, traffic real dropped on the other hand most restaurants closed down, so people were eating at home, still are eating at home a lot more than previously so we saw overall sales climb significantly in our only sales delivery has tripled last year incredible thuch has gone out changed in cares less prepared foods more seafood more delivery. Delivery and dwrosry portion of your business was one of the standouts, are issue continues to be for amazon, being, of course, acquired your company, how do you see things change once we are out of this a lot of people, are wondering if some of these trends that we saw, during the pandemic, sustained even after . Do you think how much of your customer case do you think will continue ordering delivery even if you you can see increase in foot traffic. I think, i think people like shopping like going to restaurants bars movies so i think slowly all of that is going to come back as people stop being so afraid as we move past covid when we get postcovid, are i do think some people continue to order online, it is convenient, and if shopping for food is merely a transaction you dont care about looking at the food selecting yourselves probably still ordered only i if i fewer people do i think there is a significant part of the population, like myself, that are foodies that really enjoy shopping for food.
