If President Trump were to send his nomination to the senate by this weekend, he would have 38 days before election day in which to have his choice confirmed. Justice John Paul Stevens was confirmed in only 19 days back in 1975. In 2005 john roberts was confirmed as chief justice in 24 days. In 81 Sandra Day Oconnor was confirmed in 33 days. Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell is standing firmly behind President Trump. The senator says hes moving the nomination forward as soon as the president makes his decision. She was nominated to the Appeals Court in 2017 by President Trump and a year later he personally interviewed her for a position on the Supreme Court. He ultimately went with brett kavanaugh. Shes a known conservative and said to be a favorite for this spot. Judge allison rushing with the 4th Circuit Court of appeals, what makes her stand out is her age, shes 38 years old. The president said today she could potentially serve 40, even 50 years, into her 80s. Another name on the short list were hearing about, judge Barbara Lagoa with the 11th Circuit Court of appeals in atlanta. A favorite of conservatives, she once sat on the florida Supreme Court. She is the daughter of cuban immigrants who fled the oppressive castro regime. In 2006 governor jeb bush first appointed her to state courts. As for the timing of the nomination, President Trump said it would likely be friday or saturday after the public has a chance to say goodbye to Justice Ginsburg. We need a full court on election day given the very high likelihood that were going to see litigation that goes to the court. We need a Supreme Court that can give a definitive answer for the country. Justice ginsburg herself then said this theres nothing in the constitution that says the president stops being the president in his last year. She was absolutely correct. And the Republican Party put out this video today of what other luminaries on the left were saying at that very time. The American People deserve a fullystaffed court of nine. The president nominates, and then the Senate Advises and consents or not, but they go forward with the process. What were seeing here, and hope this is temporary, is a disrespect for the constitution. The constitution is 100 clear, the president of the United States has the right to nominate someone to be a justice on the Supreme Court. Senates function is to hold hearings and to vote. The blockade on filling a naturallyoccurring vacancy, in my view, is harmful to the independence of the article iii branch. You cannot keep a seat on the Supreme Court which represents all of us, you cannot keep it vacant against the constitution. Pretty much everything they can to avoid acknowledging the legitimacy of our democraticallyelected president. The American People expect the president s nominee to be given a fair hearing and a timely vote in the senate. Their current stance is one that is against the will of the American People, without precedent and according to a Marquette Law School poll, 60 say they should hold hearings for the Supreme Court nominee, and a majority of democrats, republicans and independents agree.
