Give us a good outlook or feeling for whats going on in retail, how do you sigh it . I think you saw the economy back strongly in the Third Quarter and certainly retail sales, for example, are passed where they were before the pandemic. You have seen a big push on the retail side, certainly home stores, you mentioned home depot have benefited from that and not surprising that given the backdrop was monetary stimulus, retail sales have spike and that has benefited home depot. Maria so do you think that continues second half of the year. What kind of a recovery are you expecting after that 32. 9 contraction that we saw in the Second Quarter . Well, certainly i think the Third Quarter right now is shaping up for a pretty good rebound and the Fourth Quarter i think is up for grabs and the virus and i think the economy will continue to recovery although more wavy and slower pace but right now you have strong parts of the u. S. Economy that are pushing it forward. Certainly there are weak parts but thats usually the case. You have stronger parts, weaker parts but overall we do continue to expect the economy to push forward over the coming quarters. Maria Jon Hilsenrath, jump in. Jon brent, i would like to hear what you have to say about the breakdowns in retail of winners and losers. I mean, clearly we are seeing people, you know, home depot just reported, people flocking out to do yard work and work in their homes, online retailers are doing very well, how do you see the breakdown also of the losers and how does that unfold as the year progresses . I think the big secular trend is award online retailers and you certainly at least in my house things that show up each day at the door rather than going to the public. I do think thats probably overdone just a bit as the virus you will see people out shopping but the longer trend is certainly towards the convenience at getting things at your house. Im not for sure that home depot was impacted like other places and a lot of people were forced to stay or chose to stay home because of the virus. Maria how do you want to allocate capital, brent . Nasdaq, of course, has been on fire, yesterday another record close there. Do you want to be buying some of the leadership names that have taken this market up near records over the last several months . Yeah, i mean, i think certainly you want to begin inching out of a stay at home names that you mentioned nasdaq, s p 50, stocks that benefit from people staying at home and comments on retailers towards being out in the wild. There are parts of the market that are happy versus parts that are expensive. Value stocks should get a pickup as the economy continues to recover and size, the small caps in the u. S. Are cheap to large caps and some cheaper since 1999 and we like as a place whereas the economy recovers and as people push back out you will get the cyclical uplift. What they want voters to do is to think of joe biden, to see joe biden as the heir to obama and present that amazingly as centrist platform and not present him as radical support for bernie policies which is what he has been doing for the past 3 to 4 months. We hear that they are moderates. We hear that they are not all the way to the left but then you see things like Bernie Sanders, aoc, Elizabeth Warren, all over the docket in this dnc this week. Jon yes, so i think two things. First on the question of how we are going to pay for it, you know, we live in an environment now where nobody is asking that question in washington frankly. We had a trillion dollar budget deficit before the Coronavirus Crisis and now its going to 2 and 3 trillion, so frankly no one in washington is talking at all about debt and paying for things, in fact, the president is talking about eliminating payroll tax which funds social security, so i think this is something that goes in both directions. I think in terms of this maria yeah, im not just talking about debt, jon. Im not just talking about debt, jon. Im talking about medicare for all. 4 trilliondollar tax increase. Jon exactly. Right. Thats my point, is washington spends money without regard of how to pay for anything and that is a bipartisan issue that that i think its kind of inarguable right now. You know, in terms of the convention, i think we have two narratives. Youve got, you know, people working within companies that theyve either identified or actually sent there to get to get the job to actually send data and information back to the ccp, so the question becomes how many employees that are answering to the ccp will actually end up working for the American Technology titans, oracle and microsoft . Its the ultimate trojanhorse scenario and thats something that needs to be considered in terms of security and safety in terms of protecting intellectual property that you were talking about but to jons point that would drive price up with competitors and even though they dont have intention of buying perhaps that makes life more difficult to microsoft who was the only big player at this point but, boy, is this a big company, 800 million active users, more than 1 billion users. 3 times the size to have u. S. Population and its worth about 75 billion, so that makes it the most valuable privatelyheld company in the world but certainly enticing but a lot of variables that we should start considering in terms of protecting intellectual property. They came in at 1. 56. And revenue, big beat there, 135. 18 billion was the estimate, they came in at 137. 7 billion. A couple more things we were looking for. The stock was up about 2 going into this. Its now up more than 6 , this is a dow component. Same store sales up 9 . If you take out fuel out of that number it was a jump of 9. 9 , also ecommerce sales, this is Something Else, a jump of 97 for ecommerce sales, maria. That tells us that basically people were not only online but that walmarts initiative to take on amazon seems to be paying off. Also, the cost of the company with regards to the coronavirus whether its the healthcare cost, cleaning the stores, paying more for employees, because they have been hiring during this, that came in at 1. 5 billion. I want to say, sams club, i was looking at the comp sales there, those rose 13. 3 , that big bulk, thats the costco competitor there on sams club and new member counts for sams club coming in more than 60 , so really impressive numbers. What an earnings period. Lets talk retail, steve, your thoughts on the earnings weve gotten from walmart, kohls and home depot, surpassing expectations. Were in a pandemic and yet weve got these Companies Reporting strong earnings and now walmarts stock is up better than 6 . Your reaction . Its a huge morning. You know, two huge bellwethers with home of depot and walmart coming out. I was going to say walmart was going to beat expectations but they beat me by a couple seconds to say it. Home depot crushed, 23 , profits up 25. Thats wonderful. Walmart beats like you said, both stocks up a couple percents right now. The ecommerce part, you guys just mentioned it a few seconds ago, thats the critical part, up nearly 100 on the ecommerce side. Thats not going to change. When the pandemic is over, when people are getting back to some degree of normal, thats expected to continue. Youre going to see the biggest propertyable profitable gains for that Company Moving forward. We need guidance out of them. N. I know its hard. Its hard to give guidance with so many unknowns, especially with Congress Failing to put together another stimulus package, as of last night. Im hoping you can get guidance out of them. We dont expect to see guidance on paper today in the next few minutes or so. But i want to know where do they feel because they they are the best indicator of the u. S. Consumer. Where do they feel this continues down that path. I feel that they should be starting to guide a little bit lower. I think youre going to hear that with the stimulus being gone, with the ppp money being gone, you have you to believe the u. S. Consumers going to start catching up. We saw the housing numbers just yesterday, being a little bit down. The lower income people have been hit harder by the pandemic and its starting to trickle through. Thats my biggest worry. Thats what we need to see out of a company like walmart, how they feel. Because they have the best indicators out there in that segment. Maria and well get that guidance for the rest of the year. I know you will. Maria markets are near record levels regardless, the s p 500 closed up threetenths of a percent yesterday, nearly topping the prepandemic highs. Yesterday it was up 9 points. The nasdaq was up better than is 1 higher and all of the averages are gaining this morning. Were also waiting on that stimulus, as you mentioned. So dennis, what do the charts tell you here. We have this market at the highest of the morning, given the walmart and home depot numbers. Its amazing whats going on. Its a bull market. Its been a bull market. Markets moving to the upper right. It shall continue to do so. What i have is what we call massively excessive quantitative easing, taking stocks higher, Interest Rates lower, taking gold higher, corn prices higher, Commodity Prices higher. As long as that continues, no reason to believe thats going to stop any time soon and its not just here in the United States, its the monetary authorities in england, canada, china, russia, the u. K. , europe, theyre all becoming massively excessive and theyll continue to do so. Theyre worried about their economies. Well, they should. Until we see new growth in the economy itself, that excessive quantitative easing moves its way into the stock prices. Thats whats going on. It will continue. It will continue until it stops. Thats what i learned in 45 years of doing business. Maria we know that jay powell has told us that rates will be near rock bottom levels until 2023. Weve got that for sure in terms of the path forward. Not a lot of alternatives to companies that actually pay dividends in the stock market. Look at tesla and the huge boost. David, wrap us up here. Well, with the walmart side, let me start there. I want to remind us that walmart was one of the only two stocks, mcdonalds being the other one, that was up in 2008. So the whole world was ending, it was a real actual secular recession and contraction and walmart was up in that period as well. Its always been a very defensive company and i dont think its a bellwether for the regular consumer. Its people buying what they sort of have to buy, its just that now they have that double wham mmy of being the biggest brick and mortar in the world and the ecommerce is legitimate as the real competitor amazon. Your point to tesla, different from what dennis was talking about with the qe and liquidity driven market right now, the appetite for risk assets. Teslas a cold stock, a popularity stock. I think elon musk deserves the premium to his net worth for being one of the only ceos in america to stand up to gavin newsom and the lockdowns in march, april. I dont think thats the way it works. And President Trump didnt and what youre seeing in ohio now embodied by john kasich, the suburbs are moving to joe biden, suburban columbus, suburban cincinnati, people who voted for john kasich and liked him are now moving to joe biden. A disagreement at the department of justice over google, apparently. There are concerns about the potential antitrust suit against google. According the a report from the wall street journal, lawyers suggesting they may need more time to go through millions of documents to guarantee a win. Attorney general william barr says hes hopeing to make a decision by the end of the summer to move forward with the lawsuit. Jon hilsenrath, your reaction . Jon whats going on here is there are two pieces of this investigation. One on googles search practices and another on its advertising businesses and apparently the advertising piece of this is moving more slowly and one possibility is that they break they bring this antitrust investigation into two pieces. One at a time. The justice department, secretary barr, its pushing to get this done this summer. Some of the lawyers there think they should move more slowly. The other thing id say about this is we have this weird dichotomy where on the one hand i think a lot of people are concerned about the power of big tech and believing that big tech should be stopped from acquiring so many other smaller businesses. And then on the other hand, were looking to big tech to buy tiktok from the chinese government. So, you know, i think this country needs to have a discussion about how about whether big tech is allowed to continue to acquire other companies and if not, whats the alternative. Maria yeah. Because those acquisitions just make it more powerful and more powerful, bigger and more powerful, right, jon . Jon absolutely. And the two leading contenders for tiktok right now are microsoft and oracle. It seems like whenever we have a problem in this sector, we look to the Big Tech Companies to come and solve it and a lot of people feel like the Big Tech Companies are a part of the problem. Maria yeah. Look at who is waiting to acquire, microsoft and oracle. Can you get any bigger. Joe, what do you think, do you think the d ooj moves forward wh this case . Joe i think they do. I think later this summer, where are we now, its august 18th. Thats basically the next couple of weeks and as the wall street journal described it this is a once in a generation lawsuit and if you have any flaws in it and lose in court remember, google had Something Like 46 billion in revenues in 2019. We have earnings from walmart, home depot out as well as kohls, beating expectations across the board. Meanwhile, the nasdaq notching a record close yesterday, it is continuing that momentum this morning. Global markets this morning are also having a firmer tone, european indices are higher across the board. The european Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has warned that banks are unlikely to fully recover from the coronavirus before 2022. Having said that, the fq100 is up 15 and the cac is up 21, the dax index up 110 of points, almost 1 there as well. In asia overnight markets were mixed, you have south koreas kospi index reporting a sharp decline, concerns are growing there over coronavirus spikes. Hes cut taxes and rebuilt our economy. Hes put a number of policies in place that have allowed america to become the Number One Energy producer in the world. Hes helped our vets. Hes rebuilt our military and made us stronger so that our adversaries dont pick on us and dont mess with us. He is unlike previous president s. Hes actually taken on china. He has done a Record Number of things to rebuild our country, to make us stronger, to make us more prosperous. The democrats can say all they want this week but i look forward to next week when we have a contrast with the Republican Convention, where we can point out the democrats new agenda of lawlessness and socialism which is a very, very dangerous thing for this country and would take us back, not take us forward. Maria well, you mentioned lawlessness and Michelle Obama also said chaos and she said, look, all we get is chaos. Hes had enough time to prove himself but hes over his head. What i was struck by when she said that was, well, how come there are so many democrat mayors and governors who wont stop the chaos, who wont stop the vandalism, who wont actually put their Police Forces in check to restore law and order . Exactly. If you want to look at the chaos in this country, look at all the democratrun cities. Thats where our crime is skyrocketing, thats where you have rioting and looting and instead of stopping it, theyre trying to defund the organization that could. I mean, it is mindblowing to watch the hypocrisy of the democrats last night talk about how they want to implement safety and empathy. They dont take care of the most Vulnerable People in our communities. They arent protecting our big cities. They dont protect the unborn child. America is at the crossroads today. The stakes in this election are greater than any in modern times. Im a lifelong republican. In normal times, Something Like this would of probably never happen. But these are not normal times. Were being taken down the wrong road by a president who has pitted one against the other. Maria and i mentioned this in the last segment, sarah. Dont forget, during the 2016 Convention Season the Republican Convention was in ohio and he was the governor of ohio and he would not go to the convention hall, he refused to attend the Gop Convention four years ago. Look, i hope john kasich stays out in that field all by himself because i think thats where he belongs. Republicans dont want him. And frankly, i dont think most democrats do either. He doesnt have a lot of credibility. How can you claim to be a republican when you are voting and pushing for somebody who doesnt represent anything that republicans stand for. Democrats want bigger government, higher taxes, more government intrusion into your lives. They dont care about the prolife movement. Everything that john kasich says he stands for is the opposite of what democrats embody. Read their party platform, john. Im afraid for the people in of ohio if thats the kind of leadership they have. I think john kasich needs to stay out in the field all by himself, right where he belongs, because, frankly, the Republican Party doesnt want somebody who doesnt know who he is, doesnt know what they believe in, because hes willing to embrace things that are so far left and so far outside of what republicans stand for and frankly what donald trump has been able to accomplish in these last four years.
