"fbn: a.m." starts right now. ♪ lauren: good morning, welcome to "fbn: a.m.." i'm lauren simonetti. cheryl: good morning, i'm cheryl casone. good to have you with us. lauren: lets' take a look at your money. we have a rebound from the first decline from the dow in six sessions. nasdaq gaining 52 this morning. cheryl: taking a look at stocks in asia, the pressure of the coronavirus spreading to inhabe takens in china and there's a new case in hong kong. that's a piece of the pie here. japan market higher been the shanghai and hang seng are lower once again. lauren: european markets are hugging the flat line this morning. a tentative rebound for some of those markets as world leaders continue to meet at the world economic forum. moments ago at the economic forum, maria bartiromo spoke with president trump in davos on everything from tax cuts to impeachment. maria: mr. president, thank you so much for joinings us. let's talk about priorities for a second term. do you have anything left that you need to accomplish in terms of campaign promises and what are your priorities for a second term? >> well, we have a lot of things. we've done i think more than anybody in three years. you know with regulation, tax cuts and so many other things, we rebuilt our military, $2.5 trillion on the military but we have a military like we have never had before. we're going to be doing a middle class tax cut, very big one. we're going to be doing that. we have to win the house. i think we can. i think we will win the house. i think the impeachment hoax, i call it, i think that really helps us in terms of the you house. maria: was that a tax cut for the middle class, would you make that permanent? >> p i'm going to make a tax cut and we're probably going to make the other permanent. it's got a long way to go, but we're going to make it permanent for the middle class. we'll be announcing that over the next 90 days. that's very important. we have great healthcare initiatives coming up. we've done well with healthcare. we gowe got rid of the individul mandate. thats was the thing people couldn't do. they were forced to pay a number and not get healthcare. we got rid of that. we've done really well with healthcare. we're coming you up with a plan he that's going to be fantastic. maria: what about in terms of your trade initiatives. you met with the european commissiocommission president. what do you want europe to do in order to hold back on additional tariffs. >> we made great trade deals. the china deal is amazing. we'll be starting phase two pretty soon. we left 25% tariffs on because it's good to negotiate for the phase two. they want to start fades two right away. -- phase two right away. and so do i. usmca, great. we made the $40 billion deal with japan also. we said we won't do the tariffs but we'll do 40 and japan is a tremendous buyer now. south korea. we find, i find that the european union is tougher to deal with than anybody. they've taken advantage of our country for many, many years. it was actually formed for the purpose of taking advantage of the united states, if you really think about it. but they've taken advantage and have been very, very tough to deal with. for me, they're very easy to deal with and i told them -- i memetwith the new head who is vy nice and i dealt with jean claude for a long time. i didn't want to do china and europe at the same time. i said let me finish china first, and frankly mexico and canada, as soon as i do that i'll deal with europe. they've been very difficult to deal with. if we can't make a deal i'll have to put a 25% tariff on the cars, 20 or 25%. i'm sure they're going to make a deal. cheryl: did you get any sense that she's going to do it. >> they have to do it. they have no choice. i say this not as a wise guy or anything else. they treated us very badly. we lost $150 billion over a period of many years, we've lost $150 billion within the year in terms of deficits. they have to do it. it's the right thing to do and they have to do it and i did tell her, i said look, i know we're going to make a deal but if we don't we're going to have to tariff your cars and other things coming into the united states. and they want to have like an emergency meeting and we'll make a deal. maria: let me ask you this -- >> without that, zero chance. just so you understand. zero. but with that, 100%. well, let me say 99%. lauren: you can catch more of maria's interview with the president at 6:00 a.m. eastern time. cheryl: the president just wrapped up hosting a breakfast along with his daughter of the who's who in american business, these leaders giving the -- given the chance to discuss with the president economic policies, opportunities for american workers. meantime, in about 20 minutes, the president is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with iraq's president. this is going to be the first meeting between the two leaders since trump ordered the air strikes that killed iranian general qassem soleimani earlier this month. we're going to bring you that bilateral meeting live when it happens. lauren: hours ago, in the middle of the night, the senate approved the rules for president trump's impeachment trial. it was a party line vote. it came after more than 12 hours of debate that went into the wee hours of this morning. >> if the senate you hows the -- allows the president to get away with such extensive obstruction, it will affect the senate's power of subpoena and oversight just as much as the house. >> he means unless you do exactly what he says, regardless of your constitutional rights, then you're obstructing. the president of the united states declassified that telephone call and released it to the public. how's that for transparency. >> you don't get credit for transparency when you get caught. cheryl: griff jenkins is live in washington with the first day of sparks flying on the senate floor and i guess yesterday became today. griff, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a marathon day out of the gate. we haven't gotten to opening statements. nothing good happens after midnight, because the discourse between the house managers and the president's defense team turned viciously personal. >> the president sometimes relies on a theory of absolute immunity, that says he can order anybody in the executive branch not to testify to the you house or the senate. it's embarrassing, the president's counsel would talk about this today. >> the only one who should be embarrassed, mr. nadler, is you, for the way you've addressed this body. this is the united states sena senate. >> reporter: the chief justice, john roberts, finally had enough. >> i think it is appropriate at this point for me to admonish both the house managers and the president's counsel in equal terms to remember that they are addressing the world's greatest deliberative body. one reason it has earned that title is because its members you avoid speaking in a manner and using language that is not conducive to civil discourse. >> reporter: in the end, they adopt the framework along party lines, putting a he vote on a vn witnesses until next week. susan collins broke ranks in the vote. at the world economic forum the president was asked about it. >> mr. president, good morning. are you happy with your legal team? >> they're doing a he very good job. >> did you watch the trial? >> we have a great team. >> reporter: the trial resumes today at 1:00. but what a first day, lauren and cheryl. lauren: we are ready. the the popcorn is popped. the coronavirus has killed nine people so far in china. itit has spread to the united states for the first time. one case is confirmed in seattle, washington. two cases in chicago appear to show indications of the virus. there are enhanced screening at major airports for flights arriving or stopping in the wuhan province. cheryl: markets taking a hit on the coronavirus news, especially yesterday, took a bit out bite f the dow. the boeing's stock suspended yesterday afternoon after shares fell 6%. boeing pushing back this morning. let's bring in doug flynn to break it down. the he question with boeing, the stock was halted. they came out and said they're thinking the middle of the year, that doesn't include pilot training, simulator training and the software isn't necessarily completely fixed on the plane. >> they have a lot to do. this is what they should have done from the beginning. that's part of the problem. they're taking the many time to -- they're taking the time to do it right. there's about $200 billion worth of orders for this. they need to do whatever they need to do to get it right and get it out so they can get back on track as a company. if they do, things will look up for them. right now, they're in the turmoil stage. cheryl: united airlines reported stronger profit and revenue. they have 14 or 15 max jets. they're taking a smaller hit than delta or southwest. we'll be hearing from those companies as well. let's go back to the coronavirus. we are having remnants of saars virus from 2002. that actually hit economic growth. >> yes, it did. cheryl: are you as concerned about the coronavirus? >> seems like the chinese have this a little bit more under control. but we'll see. these things are always like a cycle. they come out and there's nervousness, that hit the market a little bit yesterday. if it turns into something much bigger it is going to have an impact. looks like they're all over it this time, more so than the past. so similarly, i think that could mean that maybe it doesn't have as much of an impact in the short run that you might expect if it turns into a bigger epidemic. cheryl: we're monitoring all of the news coming out of da vogues and -- davos and the global economy. there's been a differentiation about how the leaders are interacting. macron didn't even go. do you wonder if we'll see more protectionism for world economies and countries or do you think this is actually a positive, you've got all these business leaders meeting there. >> it's interesting. seemingly they're taking a tact like they don't expect growth be as good as it has been. maybe it's true for europe, although a lot of they that has avoided recession. i think it's coming at it from the standpoint they have to deal with the united states whichs is acting differently than they have in the past and that's primarily coming from the top. cheryl: protectionism, you're talking about president trump, he sat down with maria and we'll hear more from him in the next hour. steven mnuchin made comments about the phase two trade deal and we don't really expect that until after the election but he was walking back even yesterday his kind of comments about phase two and i think he's trying to kind of temper market expectation about phase two. >> i think the whole point of this was to get phase one through so they can talk about it all to the election and then worry about phase two after the election. they can keep talking about it, we're going to do it, but in reality it's probably not going to happen until after the election. he has the talking points that he did this deal and he talk about the europe. cheryl: this breakfast had tim cook, goldman sachs, morgan stanley, everyone was there. we can't wait to hear what was said. doug flynn, thank you very much for the commentary this morning. lauren: we're waiting on more from president trump in davos. he is exacted to tracee. tracee: good morning. tesla becoming the first publicly listed u.s. car maker to be l valued at over $100 billion. reaching the mark in after hours trading. if the company is able to keep the valuation above $100 billion, ceo elon musk will be eligible for a payout potentially worth hundreds of millions of dollars. tesla shares have more than doubled following a surprising third quarter profit and news the company's chinese factory was ahead of schedule. sticking with electric vehicles, general motors unveiling a new autonomous electric vehicle meant for the ride share industry. the cruise origin was unveiled last night in san francisco. while details are still scarce on the technology, the cruise origin has a spacious cabin and relatively low cost, estimated to be about half of tesla's model x. no time l table for production was announced. derek jeter is the latest baseball l hal hall of fame mem, but falling short o of receiving unanimous support. former teammate mariano rivera is the only player to be elected unanimously last year. jeter will be enshrined in cooperstown. while many may complain the super bowl goes too late into the night, some fans may hope the game goes a little longer. buffalo wild wings says if the game goes into over time, they will give out free wings on february 17th, according to vegas odd makers the probability of the super bowl going and a night for senators during day one of the president's impeachment trial. what can we expect today? warren davidson joins us. congressman, david son, thank you for coming on. what can we expect today? >> probably more of the same. the democrats have been making the case for impeachment as a nancy pelosi said for two and-a-half years, it's not really news that it started again with ukraine but it's been an ongoing quest and i think they'll try to keep it alive as long as they can. they decided to have instead of two 12-hour sessions, three eight-our sessions. lauren: how unified is the republican party right now, tabling each and every aa helpedment from chuck -- amendment from chuck schumer. does that stepped to witnesses? >> i think they'll be deliver brdeliberative.the president fia chance at due process that he didn't have in the house. it's rich to see nadler and schiff making the arguments, oh, we have to have this fair and deliberative process where they provided none of that in the house. this had i is the path that the president gets a path for that. we'll see if we need witnesses. looking at the evidence they presented in the house, there's nothing there that's impeachable. lauren: for the average person, consistent sit wents in your -- constituents in your district, they're not watching the marathon hearings. how does that resonate with them had? >> in our district, people are pretty unified, they're sick of people targeting the president and they're ready for him to get on with the agenda. the president's been on message, talking about the economy. he's in davos where people are concerned about future growth and a little ambivalent and the president is like we're doing great. come to the united states, invest here, grow here, that's what's and they used a popular messaging app to do it. lauren: crazy story. joining us now is brett larson. eyebrows are raised this morning about who hacked jeff bezos and why. >> this is how we learned he was having an affair which led to his divorce which became a very public story. it turns out the pictures they got may have been because of a video message he got through what's app that then opened a back door onto his phone for hackers to access photos, messages and anything else going on. this security hole we've known about, we knew about it late last year. we have heard of other hacks that have happened this way. you can send a corrupted video file. he may not have known. what's really sad is the sender of the video may not have known that it was a corrupted video. lauren: it is allegedly crown prince mohammed bin salman. cheryl: isn't it an account tied to him. >> we don't want to connect any dots but we have to throw the dots out there. it is linked to the saudi crown prince. we don't know if he was chatting with him. saudi arabia is real, they've been able to infiltrate we could say the what's app messaging with video files. it could have been a friendly like, oh, hey, look at this funny video had that i found that was sent between two friends or two associates and that opened up the back door. cheryl: or two billionaires. >> two really wealthy people. lauren: this has implications from wall street and silicon valley and overseas. >> a lot of us i think have gotten comfortable with how secure or de devices have become over the years. here, we've had issues several times with some of the messaging apps where a corrupted oral teared file is -- or altered file is an access door for hackers. not good. i feel like we're going back to the late '90s where we have to remind people, don't open e-mail attachments. cheryl: staying with the iphone, a lower cost iphone is coming out. >> there's talks they will will be bringing out a cheaper version 350 to $450, that's a great entry level you're seeing on the android side so apple should step in. rumors suggest it will probably look like the iphone 8, which came out in 2011, so no phase id, it will -- face id, it will have the touch id and the home button. this is actually going to be a really good smartphone. lauren: i never got the facial ice right on -- facial identification right on my phone. maybe with europe and if they don't make a deal, we'll certainly give that very strong consideration. we've been treated very badly as a country for many, many years on trade. if they're fair, we're not going to have a problem. cheryl: steven mnuchin, the treasury secretary, is in davos and he just actually made a comment that the trade deal with the chinese phase two could be signed before november and here hes is, vice president of research and policy the charles coke institute, william ruger. that's where we're going to start. good morning, i wanted to let our viewers know about that breaking news. what do you make of this, what do you make about the fact that it's all about trade in davos? >> well, again, thank you for having me on. davos has been really fascinating because the president gave a speech yesterday that was remarkable for positive views. it really was quite a difference from his inauguration, the american carnage speech in which it painted a dire picture of america. this speech was very kind of forward, thinking about how we're thriving, we're flourishing, how we need to be open to innovation. it wasn't a dire picture that required us to engage in protectionism. it was enthusiastic and optimistic about america's future. i think it's interesting that he pivoted back to this kind of more kind of difficult situation america finds itself in, we're being taken advantage of, where in that speech it was more optimistic, dynamic, reagan-esque if you will. cheryl: i looked at the liss lf those who attended a breakfast with him and his daughter, it was morgan stanley, goldman sachs, the list goes on and on. do you think his relationship with america's ceo is in good shape or do you think the president needs to take tray exa steps to get us past the trade war and get back in lock step with the ceos. >> i think a lot of americans including the elites in davos think the trade wars are destructive of the possibility of america's ceiling in terms of its economy. i mean, we should be doing a lot better, the tariffs have been taxes on american consumers, and i think they realize this is actually weighing down an economy that otherwise is roaring. cheryl: i'm so sorry. we want to go back to davos, the bilateral meeting is happening right now between president trump and the public of iraq's president. this is the president. let's listen in. >> we're working on military, we're working on isis. we have a whole host of very difficult things to discuss and some very positive things also. and we've been friends and the relationship is very good and i just want to thank you very much, mr. president. >> thank you. it's an important opportunity to meet president trump, to talk about the developments in our neighborhoods, these are challenging times, difficult times, and i look for a very fruitful and candid conversation with the president. we have had an enduring relationship and the united states has been a partner to iraq and the war against isis. this mission needs to be accomplished. you and i share the same mission for a stable iraq that is at peace. >> [ indiscernible ] >> we're talking about a lot of different things and you'll be hearing whatever we do. but they like what we're doing and we like them and we've had a very good relationship. i can only speak for my administration. i won't speak for past add a medicine strayingses, frankly. but we've had a very -- administrations, frankly. we're down to 5,000. we're down to a very low number. historically low. and we'll see what happens. >> are you considering sanctions against iraq? >> we'll see what happens. because we do have to do things on our terms. >> we have a lot of common interest to fight against extremism, a sovereign iraq that is stable, friends of the neighbors and friends of the united states. >> and we're also involved with them in their oil business and that's always been very important from their standpoint and from our standpoint. so we have a lot of very positive things to talk about. but we are down to a low number and we've been there for quite a while. so we'll make a determination. thank you all very much. thank you very much. thank you. cheryl: that was president trump meeting with iraq's president, and obviously the issue of troop withdrawal is a big question. let's bring back in william ruger. thank you for standing by. your thoughts on what you just heard about, in particular, troop withdrawal out of iraq. >> the relationship obviously has been frayed by some of the u.s. actions, the killing of general sole ma soleimani chiefg them. one of the things that's interesting is the iraqi government wants to hand trump i think an actual victory here, which is being able to carry out his vision of ending endless wars and with drawing american troops out of some of these spots where our mission has been accomplished. the united states has largely accomplished its goals vis-a-vis isis. i think the president should use this as an opportunity to rethink the foreign policy out of the middle east and shift the troops out of there, especially to focus on the great power of competition as they talked about in the national security strategy and since. i think there's an opportunity at the same time as there is fraying in the partnership. cheryl: thank you very much for your perspective and
