Cheryl breaking this morning, it is our top story, the u. S. And china set to declare a trade truce today. The two countries going to sign the first phase of the trade deal following a twoyear standoff. Lauren unbelievable. Edward lawrence has been following this story very closely. He joins us live from washington right now. Good morning. What do we know now . As they say, the he devils in the details and we dont have all of them, edward. Reporter no one has actually read publicly the full agreement. We do know that there will be some structural changes in chinas chinas already started to make some of those. That signing will happen today. This could be the single most important signing of this presidency so far. Well have to see exactly whats in this deal. But last night i could tell you that the chinese vice premier met Robert Lighthizer and later on the delegation in washington, d. C. They went to dinner last night. That meeting lasting several hours there. This is the only American Video of this meeting. You can see liu he going inside the deal here. Rn white was able to get this handshake greeting there on the eve of the signing. It will be posted the moment that the agreement is signed. Sources say the chinese will be at the white house about 11 00 a. M. This morning. There will be a meeting with the president and then a signing ceremony. Its expected to speak at at the signing ceremony, u. S. Treasury secretary steven ne mnuchin and trade representative Robert Lighthizer and we will hear from liu he about this. Following the ceremony a lunch will take place. The u. S. Chamber of commerce has been briefed and included, bounced off with ideas by the u. S. Trade representatives office. The Senior Vice President of asia, charles freeman, says from what he has read in the agreement, there are enough structural changes and enforcement to change the trade relationship with the u. S. Listen. Were in the business of giving the chinese and the administration the benefit of the doubt and, frankly speaking, its been a really rough couple years for our consumers, for our businesses, because of the tariff challenges and so were really pleased to see a cessation of that and were looking forward to a strong and successful implementation of this phase before we get onto the next phase. Reporter freeman is cautiously optimistic about this. He sayses hes going to watch the implementation of this very closely as is the u. S. Trade delegation here. Freeman met with the chinese trade delegation yesterday. I spoke with him after that. He said the chinese affirmed to him in a strong manner that they will follow through with this agreement. In fact, the chinese met with dozens of u. S. Businesses, they had the same message that give them time to implement but they will follow through with this trade agreement. It was standing room only in their hotel for those meetings. Freeman said he was the whole 25 member chinese delegation on one side of the table, he was on the other. They were trying to show him that they will honor this. Well have to see. The devils in the details. Back to you. Were hearing were going to see regulations related to huawei and other Chinese Companies coming out of the commerce department. That is expected to happen fairly soon about that within this agreement it covers currency, covers intellectual property, also covers agriculture, the buy is 50 billion worth of u. S. Specifically with agriculture, 200 billion over the next two years, the chinese are going to buy in all goods and services from the United States. But it does not include specifically huawei. All democrats on stage took turns fighting over trade deals negotiated by trump. Sanders said he would not support the usmca because it did not have the words Climate Change in the deal. We have forced American Workers to compete against people in mexico, in china, elsewhere, who earn starvation wages. Every major Environmental Organization has said no to this new trade agreement. Because it does not even have the phrase Climate Change in it. We have farmers here in iowa who are hurting. They are hurting because of Donald Trumps initiated trade wars. Market reaction r, what are you expecting . We saw it yesterday. I think the market was expecting a lot more. This should not have surprised anybody. This administration decided from day one theyre going to hold chinas feet to the fire, hold them accountable. Part of this is targeted tariffs, as you meet certain goals, well get rid of the tariffs. None of this should be a surprise. Cheryl of course this is going political. It hasnt been signed yet. Youve got senator chuck schumer, dnc issuing a statement theyre frustrated and disappointed by phase one. What do you think of the democrats reaction in all this. This is an election year. I would expect the democrats to be critical of anything, short of china becoming a market of free trade. Cheryl the reaction from analysts around the world, i mean, the economies of the u. S. Weve already reported wasnt necessarily that hit by the tariffs but the tariffs are staying in place. Even though the chinese are committing to buying agriculture. Certain sectors are being pointed to now, energy, services, agriculture, and manufacturing as u. S. Industries that will benefit from this. Do you agree with that . I do. Weve actually seen those Industries Hurt the most, especially agricultural area. Look, these are needs that the chinese economy has to have. We talked about pork, soybeans and certainly energys a big need for the chinese economy. This is kind of a win for them. It solves some of their problems. Its a win for the trump administration. They dont want to go into an election year, the election nine months away, potentially putting our economy in danger. Cheryl and also not working on phase two. Real quick, dean, huawei, we called it a National Security threat, the secretary of state called it a National Security threat. Edward lawrence says as far as he knows its not going to be addressed in the agreement specifically. Your final reaction . I think even if huawei specifically isnt in the agreement, how with intellectual property and hacking, which is really the underlying problem with huawei and zte is hopefully going to be addressed.
