The other big story besides the usmca, it was a big week for the president on busines the busine, china, theres some concern they didnt put in writing the 50 billion in agricultural purchases. Chuck schumer coming out, saying President Trump sold out to the chinese. Phase one deal, markets are celebrating. From a policy he perspective, should we be celebrating . Its a mixed thin. The confrontation between the United States and china is far from over. The president has gotten the chineses attention. I think thats remarkable. Well see 100 billion in new business. Thats good. And i think most importantly, companies are starting to rethink doing business with china and doing business in china. So weve seen diversification of supply chains and people i think taking different risks. Its not a cost free trade deal. We had to pay for tariffs. We had to bail out farmers. I dont think its a sustainable strategy over time. And we havent addressed the big issues like ip theft. So its the first battle in a longrunning thing. In the short term its good news for the administration. Cheryl Robert Lighthizer talked about this, he said phase one deal, it is totally, quote, done. He said u. S. Exports to china will double over the next couple years. Lighthizers a big voice in this. He is the one thats digging into the details of this deal with the chinese. Right. I think the tariff a lot of us disputed whether a lot of the tariffs were legally appropriate. Its not a sustainable strategy over time. We have a growing economy and so tariffs are bearable. We pay a cost for them. Its resetting the relationship with china and fundamentally changing chinese behavior. This is the first step in that. We have to address the ip issues. We have to address the predatory practices, unfair Market Access issues. I think the administration has got chinas attention. The fact that chai chinese cameo the table and did a deal, they dont want the he details of the deal to come out, that shows that they did not come out of this in a strong position. So the hackers have enough of your personal information so when they get you on the phone, theyre better able to fool you into falling for whatever kind of scam that theyre trying to sell you. So its another its like a doubling down on the hackers and of course were a week an a coue days away from christmas so a lot of people have been doing online shopping, so it wouldnt be out of character for a retailer to call you and say your credit card, the transaction didnt go through, could we get that number from you again.
