Including ph fbiincludefiona hir senior advisor, Michael Mckinsey and the president s ambassador to the european union, gordon sondland. More interviews are scheduled for next week. Lets bring in Dan Henninger, Kyle Peterson and kim strassel. Dan, what did we learn this week from the impeachment proceedings and a lets start with the witnesses on capitol hill. Well, we pretty much learned what the democrats want us to learn and what theyre handing out to the press. Again, the hearings are being held in secret. I mean, you had to love nancy pelosi, just the most hutspah saying she appreciates the support of her caucus, pursuing this the way they have in fairness. Do you think the white house considers it fair, holding the hearings in secret . All were learning is that indeed state Department Officials were upset at the idea that they were being pressed in ukraine to include an investigation of joe biden and possibility the idea that ukraine was involved somehow in the 2016 election because they were trying to work on ukrainian corruption and this was distracting them from that. That is the story that is being conveyed and presumably this is being into an article of impeachment against the president. Paul kim, anything else coming out here . Because the narrative that the democrats are building is in fact that this was an attempt to help the president s president sn and tarnish jojo. Joe biden. We dont have ale details. If you go back to what the original supposedly Impeachable Offense was is that the president said quid pro quo, you cant have your money unless you do an investigation of joe biden. Gives us dirt. Whats notable about this week is that even what leaked testimony we have got does not necessarily support that. Nothing has actually provided evidence of that. It wasnt in the transcript and nothing that these people have said, even the stuff that democrats are putting out that can be most damaging, theyre still not hitting what that point. We see goal posts being moved a little bit where suddenly the question is, well, did you say that you would withhold aid for anything. Thats a quid pro quo. Its obviously not. The United States makes demands constantly and threatens to withhold aid for demands from other countries. That would be the takeaway. Paul kyle, nancy pelosi seems not to be under too much pressure to actually hold an authorization vote, unlike both the nixon and the clinton impeachments. And the secrecy thing, the press corps seems to be going right along, which i do find extraordinary, since were all supposed to be about transparency and democracy dies in darkness as the Washington Post likes to say. How is she getting away with this . I think thats the answer right there. Theres not a lot of pressure on her. Its possible they intend to rectify this later on and theyll recall witnesses and redo witnesses they already did. Paul in public. Exactly. I think thats the biggest weakness right now. If youre in her shoes, i would think you would want to present this as very nonpartisan affair, being conducted fairly. I think you would want to play by the same rules that the nixon impeachment process and clinton impeachment process went by. But there seems to be theres not a lot of pressure on capitol hill to make her do you that among her caucus. I think the strategy is to try the president in the court of public opinion. I mean, shes got these members of her caucus, the 30 or so that were elected from republican seats in the midterm elections, most of whom dont want to take this vote. Theyre building this case. A lot of publicity the past week has been bad for the president. Paul no question. And they keep building this up as far as the press. Theyre kind of part of the prosecution. Theyre happy to take this stuff of theyve been fighting with trump for two years. So this is part of an look, this impeachments has been going on since the day donald trump was elected. Right . And it was inevitable. S is anyone surprised we have reached this point. Paul i want too talk about mick mulvaney, we have a sound bite of something he said at the white house this week. I was involved with the process by which the money was held up temporarily. Okay. Three issues for that. The corruption in the country, whether or not other countries were participating in the support of the ukraine and whether or not they were cooperating in an a Ongoing Investigation with our department of justice. Thats completely le legit mitt. Paul the r portrayal of this is that he conceded there was in fact a quid pro quo and, therefore, that this is essentially signing the confession statement as one of the democrats put it. This is what we got to just earlier when we talked. I mean, is it a problem for an administration to say theres accusations you meddled in our election in 2016. We need you to p cooperate with our department of justice probe and explain what you did a couple years ago. Forgive me if im wrong. I think we tasked Robert Mueller to do the same thing for three years, say what was russias influence in our 2016 election. They are now asking for the same thing. Now, he did say that they threatened to withhold aid. He also made the point which didnt get as much attention on tv that nobody suggested it was an Impeachable Offense when the Trump White House said to Central American countries, were not going to give you aid unless you deal with some of the immigration problems that are happening or helps us with our immigration problems on the border. This is somewhat diplomacy. Paul you know what they ought to do . They ought to have it in public so everybody can inspect and see the real facts and let it all play out. When we come back, tensions between President Trump and nancy pelosi reached a boiling point this week as the House Speaker walks out of a white house meeting on syria. Well take a closer look at the political fallout from the president s troop withdrawal, next. I took a lot of heat from a lot of people, even some of the people in my own party. [phone ringing] how are we doing . Fabulous. I wonder how the firms doing without its fearless leader. You sure you want to leave that all behind . Yeah. It could, if we took the time to listen. The most inspiring minds, the most compelling stories. Download audible and listen for a change. Beyond the routine checkups. Beyond the notsoroutine cases. Two to one, the republicans voted to oppose what he was doing in syria. He just couldnt handle the kind of engaged in a meltdown. Paul tensions between President Trump and House Speaker nancy pelosi reaching a boiling point this week with Top Democrats walking out of a white house meeting on syria and each side accusing the other of having a meltdown. The drama followed a house vote wednesday on a resolution condemning the president s withdrawal from Northern Syria with 129 republicans joining their democratic colleagues and supporting the measure which passed by an overwhelming vote of 35460. Before we get to that, i want to hit some Unfinished Business from the first discussion. And that is, one of the things we did find out this week i think from the testimony is that there were a lot of state department and nse officials really worried about Rudy Giuliani and the president running a kind of back door operation with ukraine. Right. So the u. S. Ambassador to eu testified that the president told him to talk to Rudy Giuliani and Rudy Giuliani told him that the president was very worried about corruption in the ukraine and wanted an investigation into 2016 and wanted some looking at the barisma. Rudy giuliani knew hunter biden was working there. Thats why you dont have the president s personal attorney freelancing on Foreign Policy. He may soon see the underside of a bus. Paul i think this is the biggest problem and poor, poor judgment on the president s part. I agree. If there is one thing you single out and you say this was a big mistake was letting Rudy Giuliani go over and act outside of the use misse the use missess of the state department. What was he doing there in any event . Thats why we have a state department. He was over there to push them to investigate joe biden which at least supports the quid pro quo fair at this moment it. It makes it difficult to deny it. Paul it was a terrible idea thats now backfiring on the president. Lets talk about the showdown at the white house, the backlash on syria. How serious a problem is this for the president s Foreign Policy . I think its a pretty darn serious problem because its the first time that trump has gotten this kind of pushback. There was a vote in the house, a lot of republicans supported it. Over in the senate, senator Lindsey Graham along with chris holland, a democrat from mayor maryland, are creating a bill that would impose heavier sanctions on turkey and erdogan than the white house imposed. I think Lindsey Graham says he might be able to get 80 votes for this. What it adds up to is finally the trump Foreign Policy approach and agenda is getting puckback from official washington. I think thats a good sign for the president at this point. You watch it to what weve seen about ukraine. Its piling up and you feel people are pulling back a little bit from the president s Foreign Policy. Paul tremendous dysfunction, i cant remember in my time covering washington that there was this kind of lack of even political decorum of even the most basic kind between a president and a House Speaker. Well, look, can we be surprised really . Theyre sitting down at a table and theyre facing off and a hes looking at this woman who has commenced an impeachment inquiry into him. It just says something about the toxic nature of that event and how we are unlikely to have any comedy, any civility or any progress on any issue in washington. Paul if youre the president , shouldnt your goal here be to marshall a defense on impeachment and then separate that out from your agenda and be able to and put pressure on nancy pelosi and say all right, youre going to do impeachment but lets what are you going to do for the American People . Are you going to pass the usmca agreement . Are you going to do something on the rest of your ayou jen da or not . Agenda or not . You see brief moments where he seems to be interested in doing that. A couple weeks ago he gave a speech on health care and said look, the democrats are not doing anything for you here. We need to make fixes and changes, heres what im doing, putting a spotlight on their failings. But its as if the discipline doesnt last for very long. I agree. I think its bad on both sides. 120 republicans buck the president s side here. Hes come down on republicans in the past like a ton of bricks. They live in fear of the tweet, maybe not so much any longer. On the other side, he wants nancy pelosi to help pass the usmca trade deal. If he doesnt get it, he talked about maybe well rip up nafta. I dont think its good for the president s reelection. Paul ill undermine the economy im running on for reelection if they dont pass the usmca, that would be suicidal. Its not all politics. The president took this decision to pull 1,000 troops back from the turkish border, the turks made the decision to move into Northern Syria. The president presumably has been taking a lot of advice from senator rand paul who is indeed an isolationist. So you cant just do these things on the assumption that there will not be any consequences. There are real substantial consequences. The russians moved soldiers into the area. Erdogan is meeting tuesday with Vladimir Putin and youve got the possibility of isis people being released in the next year. There could be an isis event, maybe possibly in europe. And the president will pay the price for anything like that happening. Paul thank you all. When we come back, as the u. S. It will be a pause in military operations for 120 hours. While the United States facilitates the withdrawal of ypg from the affected areas in the safe zone and once that is completed, turkey has agreed to a permanent cease fire. Paul that was Vice President mike pence announcing a temporary cease fire in syria. They agreed thursday to pause military operations for five days while the United States facilitates the withdrawal of the kurdish Led Syrian Democratic forces from a 20mile safe zone along the border. President trump taking a victory lap following the announcement even as fighting on the ground in syria reportedly continues. Kurds are very happy, turkey is very happy. The United States is very happy and you know what, civilization is very happy. Its a great thing for civilization. Paul mark duvowtiz is chief executive for the foundation for democracy. Nice to see you again. The president called it an aa macing outcome, everybodys happy, how do you see it. I wish it was you true but i dont think thats correct. I dont think the kurds are happy. I think the United States has abandoned them for potential slaughter. I think that the its true that the russians, the iranians and bashir assad in syria are happy because theyre now going to extend their control over the country. But i think for u. S. Al lies and u. S. U. S. Allies and u. S. Partners around the world, i think the United States has reinforced a warning from irans force leader that america always abandons its friends. Paul lets talk about the cease fire specifically. This is now said to have created at least a space for the kurds to be able to get out of that zone where the turks are shelling. And then give some time to negotiate a larger agreement that would protect the kurds and also protect the turkish interest. Is that is there a chance that that happens . Well, i just think its a lot more difficult to do that than it was a couple week ago. A kim weeks ago we had u. S. Special forces on the ground working closely with the kurds. We had u. S. Air power there. We were controlling a part of syria with most of syrias oil reserves, that gave us leverage for negotiation was th negotiate russians and assad regime. You now we withdrew the special forces. Assad and the russians are moving into the territory. Unfortunately, i think were in a worse position now with less leverage to negotiate any kind of agreement or settlement on this issue. Paul the president said that erdogan, the president of turkey, made this concession on the suspension of hostilities for five days because of the poe ten potential damage from the economic sanctions and other sanctions that the president announced. I guess is that true . And why did erdogan give this five day reprieve if thats what it is. I think erdogan realized hes getting everything he wants. I think he was facing significant resistance from the kurds and probably realized he wasnt able to push further south, given the Kurdish Military forces there. So instead, he took the five day pause which is really not a cease fire. Its an opportunity for him to consolidate his gains and faces the sanctions that the president imposed on turkey and erdogan were not very effective. They had little impact. In fact, the president has been resisting tough sanctions congress put in place over the years. Paul so erdogan did this as a kind of hes getting what he wants is what you argue and the president and the Michael Mckinsey and the president s ambassador to the european union, gordon sondland. In fact, the president has been resisting tough sanctions congress put in place over the years. Paul so erdogan did this as a kind of hes getting what he wants is what you argue and the president and the United States isnt getting all that much. What about the sanctions that are being developed in the senate . There was a huge bipartisan vote as you know in the house, a nonp binding resolution but still republicans 21 joined democrats to condemn the president s withdrawal. In the senate theres really stiff sanctions, Lindsey Grahams bill with chris von holland and several democrats being put together that would target erdogan specifically. Do you think erdogan is a little worried about that . They are definitely tough sanctions, youre right there. I dont think hes worried. I think he thinks the president will do what hes done in the past, which is stonewall any congressional sanctions. You have to remember, there were sanctions passed a number of years ago that would impose tough sanctions on turkey if it bought the f400, the Russian Air Defense system. Turkey went ahead and bought the f400 and President Trump blocked the sanctions from being imposed. I think erdogan assumes he has the president s number, he rolled him once, hell roll him again and the president will stand in the way of congressional efforts. Paul you might be right. Erdogan might be right. I dont know this time. I talked to one senator this week who said there may be 80 votes in the senate for this kind of action. Now, this is obviously before the president would lean on some republicans but i dont know. This might be a little different. Yeah, paul, the only problem is, you can pass a vetoproof majority bill and you can have sanctions in place. At the end of the day, the president may have National Interest waivers, he can waive sanctions. He can instruct the state department, Treasury Department not to enforce the sanctions. They may be tough sanctions that end up sitting in the drawer, collecting dust. Paul where do we go from here,s is this consolidation, mopping up operations with erdogan and the kurds will have to cut a deal with assad and theres no way to retrieve this situation . Look, i think were going to try to mitigate the damage. I think Vice President pence and secretary pompeo and the military are doing everything they can to mitigate the damage. The president has put them in a tough predictment. Its the Decision Making process, instead of going through a method methodical pr, having everything in place, consulting witha with allies, explaining the decision, he went ahead on a known call and a tweet phone call and a tweet and made an impulsive decision and everyone is trying to minimize the consequences. Paul what do you think of the president s invitation to erdogan to come to the white house had. I think its the wrong invitation at the wrong time. I would invite the leaders of the kurds and the Syrian Democratic force toss the white house to thank them for losing 11,000 men and women in the fight against isis to save american lives and protect the homeland. Paul thanks for coming in. Still ahead, Elizabeth Warren gets the frontrunner treatment with democratic opponents going on the attack in this weeks he debate. Can the massachusetts senator continue to dodge questions about a middle class tax hike . She has moved and has taken more seriously, people are going to ask her about, you know, little candor here, you know, tell us how youre going to do what you say youre going to do. Like very high triglycerides, can be tough. You diet. Exercise. But if youre also taking fish oil supplements, you should know, they are not fdaapproved, they may have saturated fat and may even raise bad cholesterol. To treat very high triglycerides, discover the science of prescription vascepa. Proven in multiple clinical trials, vascepa, along with diet, is the only prescription epa treatment, approved by the fda to lower very high triglycerides by 33 , without raising bad cholesterol. Look. Its clear. Theres only one prescription epa vascepa. Vascepa is not right for everyone. Do not take vascepa if you are allergic to icosapent ethyl or any inactive ingredient in vascepa. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to fish or shellfish, have liver problems or other medical conditions and about any medications you take, especially those that may affect blood clotting. 2. 3 of patients reported joint pain. Ask your doctor about vascepa. Prescription power. Proven to work. Doctor bob, what should i take for back pain . Before you take anything, i recommend applying topical relievers first. Salonpas lidocaine patch blocks pain receptors for effective, nonaddictive relief. Salonpas lidocaine. Patch, rollon or cream. Hisamitsu. Im working to make each day a little sweeter. Adp simplifies hr, benefits, and payroll for magnolia bakery, so employees like sarah can achieve what theyre working for. Your signature, senator, is to have a plan for everything. Except this. No plan has been laid out to explain how a multitrillion dollar hole in this medicare for all plan that senator warren is putting forward is supposed to get filled in. At least bernies being honest and saying how hes going to pay for this and taxes are going to go up. Im sorry, elizabeth, you have not said that. I think we owe it to the American People to tell them where were going to send the invoice. Paul Elizabeth Warren taking heat, as questions persist about how she will pay for the ambitious plans including medicare for you all. Warren, who has taken the lead in some national polls, refused to say whether she will raise taxes on the middle class, ducking that question no fewer than six times. Were back with Dan Henninger, kim strassel and Kyle Peterson. How much damage did her poe ponr opponents do. No one has laid a glove on her since she started her run. I think there was real damage. They pointed out the fact that she likes to say she has a plan for everything. Being accused of being dishonest about your intentions is not a good thing to be accused of. She played right into it. She was asked repeatedly, again and again, can you just admit that youre going to be imposing taxes on the American People and she just kept sliding right out of it. She was helping them out with their argument on stabling. Paul she was so robotic and repetitious in her answers, reminded me on marco rubio in 2016 where you plug in the tape and a he spills out the same answer all the time. Is she going to be able to get away with the essentially not answering the question on middle class taxes . No, i dont think so. I think joe bidens biggest mistake in the debate is he did not hit that, he did not treat her like the cofrontrunner like she is. The day after the debate, he started to. He said credibility matters, she will have to tell the truth. Thats what you want to hear, if hes going to try to make this competitive and take her down. At least he didnt call her pocahontas. Paul yeah. But thats her problem, shes not candid. Paul it plays into that. This is similar to that, dan, i mean, she said she had native american ancestry, turns out she didnt. You know, theres a dispute over why she left the workforce after her first child. Seems so have been caught up not telling the truth about that. So this is a pattern and if the democrats are going to make a place against trump for falsehoods, do you want your own front runner being vulnerable on the point. You have to divide whats going on in two parts. All the criticisms were making are largely general election criticisms. Lets face it Pete Buttigieg and amy clock cha klobuchar have goe her down because she has been gaining ground. I think theyre discounting joe bidens candidacy, thinking if he fades, they want to pick up his socalled moderate voters. Elizabeth warren is fight forge the progressive vote. She wants to come across as a fighter, an extremist and radical and i think shes happy to take the hits. That was a shift in this debate. Up until now, i think youve seen all the candidates trying to outprogressive bernie and elizabeth. This time they decided the way to do this is pick up joe biden voters and were going to come back out as the more pragmatic, centrist sort of candidate. Paul youre saying basically because bernies not going away and he looked hardy, despite his heart attack, looked good, had time in the sun, i think and now hes getting endorsed by alexandria ocasiocortez. Thats a big deal. Warren would have loved that endorsement, kyle. Right, right. But the challenge here is the field is going to get winnoyed. Amy clone klobuchar did a goodt she stean hasnt qualified for e next debate in november. She needs to double her polling in a matter of weeks to get there. Well see if she can pull it out. Paul the big concern when i talk to democrats about warren is electability. The point being, she has so much left wing baggage, medicare for all, lets ban fracking, all of the spending plans, taxes and taxes and taxes. And the alternative right now is biden, but if he doesnt make it, what are you left with . And also, theyre concerned because bidens got baggage and problems now too. This ukrainian thing, i remember we went out and did an event together, we were there, it was a liberal and they said this ukrainian thing, its going to help buy deb, its going to rail buy b den, its going to rally voters around him. This is not the case. This is hurting him because there are democrats out there who if they worry that Elizabeth Warren is unelectable, they worry biden may be too because of this. Paul you wrote a column this week, saying joe biden is not going to make it. Explain. I watched him carefully in the debate. I concluded that he just isnt up to it somehow to compete at a major league level. His performance this week was nowhere near the performance he showed in 2012 when he was debating paul ryan, the Vice President. Al al candidate. People thought biden won that. That guy was not the strong candidate that was on the stage in westerville, ohio. Its like hes an athlete in spring training, running at half speed, joking with other people on the stage. P democrats who think its going to get better than that are delewding themselves. I think theyre going to come the conclusion that he is not going to make it and they have to go to a plan b. Paul who does that leave . Its between biden polling numbers and Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg are huge. The coalitions are much different. Biden does better among older voters, buttigieg does better among younger voters. If you ask people who like buttigieg, who is your second choice, they say warren. One quick point, though. The moderate democrats are now in the conversation. We thought the left had taken over the democratic party. That debate suggested thats not quite true. Paul they need to get a around somebody like klobuchar if theyre going to push ahead and actually nominate somebody who has a better chance of winning. Still ahead, facebooks Ceo Mark Zuckerberg defending the companys decision not to Police Political a ad ads amid criticie social media giant is promoting disinformation. Well, i certainly worry about an erosion of truth. I dont think most people want to live in a world where you can only post things that tech only post things that Tech Companies judge to be 100 true. I get it all the time. Have you lost weight . Of course i have ever since i started renting from national. Because national lets me lose the wait at the counter. And choose any car in the aisle. And i dont wait when i return, thanks to drop go. At national, i can lose the wait. And keep it off. Looking good, patrick. I know. vo go national. Go like a pro. 2,000 fence posts. 900 acres. 48 bales. All before lunch, which we caught last saturday. We earn our scars. We wear our work ethic. We work until the works done. And when it is, a few hours of shuteye to rest up for tomorrow, the day well finally get something done. the day well finally get something done. I am totally blind. And non24 can throw my days and nights out of sync, keeping me from the things i love to do. Talk to your doctor, and call 8442142424. We dont fact check political ads. We dont do this to help politicians. We think people should be able to see for themselves what politicians are same i know many people disagree with us. In general, i dont think its right for a private company to skeanse censor politicians or te news in a democracy. Paul Mark Zuckerberg said the company considered banning all political ads on the platform but decided against it. Facebooks has been under fire over the advertising policies with democratic president ial candidate Elizabeth Warren taking on the social media giant over policing the ads of politicians, which the company exempts from Fact Checking standards applied to other content. Were back with Kyle Peterson, Dan Henninger and wall street journal editor editorial page r jason willik who met with Mark Zuckerberg this week. Welcome. Facebooks a private company, can do what it wants with its content. What do you make of the decision they made between political ads and other content . Well, i think theyve decided they dont want to be in the business of refereeing americas political back and forth. Thats a hard job to do but i think they dont want to have false advertisements and they want to subject commercial speech to a lower standard which is actually what the Supreme Court has done too. Political speech is the most protected, commercial speech is somewhat less protected. Paul do you think this is a smart decision on his part . I think its a smart decision to be as hands off as possible when it comes to political content. I think its going to destroy peoples confidence in your company if they see you as favoring one viewpoint and disfavoring other viewpoints. Paul or one candidate and not another. Right. Paul not everybodys happy with this. And it seems to me that the political left seems to be most upset because they think that they should take down some of Donald Trumps ads, for example. Is that how you read it . Yeah, ive been quite surprised by the response to the speech from ordinary journalists and politicians because it was a fairly conventional statement of free expression, values, you know. We benefit from a diversity of vie points viewpoints. People got so angry about this. They really want Donald Trumps ads taken down. They consider it dangerous. They want things they consider racist taken down. They want facebook to move in and suppress a lot of content they dont like. Paul but if zuckerberg and facebook did that they would face a backlash on the other side from republicans who say wait a minute youre taking down trumps ads but what about that ad. I guess the alternative the democrats want is Something Like politifact which judges the accuracy of content to be some kind of a judge. They have Fact Checkers for lots of their content. There is some question about what standards theyre using. Facebook has thrown their hands up when it comes to speech by politicians. They b dont want to be in the position of during an Election Campaign suppressing an argument from a politician because the fact clerk says thats not right. Paul facebook is going to set up an internal court to what can be taken down or what should be allowed to run on facebook and zuckerberg says theyre going to be able to make the last call. Im not going to jump in and override them. How do you think thats going to work . Well, i think it might end up being more n thor thorny thane expects. Hes getting all of these attacks from all sides. He want to wash his hands of the issue and say heres an independent p institution. He said it will earn the confidence of facebook users because it will be independent, allowed to override him, it will do a good job. The tenth time it overrides him people will believe. It will have 40 members. Paul 40 home betters. 4 40 members . 40 members. Paul thats not a committee. Thats a convention. They have a complex process of selection and the procedure is going to be quite complex. The first people are going to be announced this year. Theyre doing a vetting process. I think theres a risk of the membership being scrutinized and attacked and its not necessarily better than what they have now. Paul google tried to set up something similar on a separate subject and the employees objected to one of the names, a conservative and they killed the committee, killed the pan he hell. The president of the Heritage Foundation was appoint todd the Artificial Intelligence ethics board and google employees blew up over the conservative views and they dissolved the panel. The question is will this happen in facebooks panel too. Paul i agree with zuckerberg on this, i dont think you should be policing political speech on facebook. Kyle, what do you think . I completely agree. Trying to fact check that kind of stuff, remember a certain president said if you like your health care coverage, you can keep your health care coverage. That was ruled to be true right before it was ruled to be false. Paul by politifact. Thats right. This is a difficult thing hes being asked to do. Think back. As far as political rhetoric goes, Thomas Jefferson and john adams called each other pretty nasty things but here we are. I think Mark Zuckerbergs speech was very important. He came out against censorship. We have to understand, there are a lot of people on the left who think some conservative ideas are morally unacceptable and should be suppressed. Thats whats happening on campuses for the last four or five years to a lot of professors including liberal professors. So Mark Zuckerberg making clear his position on this i think was a big stie step. Paul when we come back, kim strassel on her new book and the he potential longterm damage to american institutions and norms fact is, every Insurance Company hopes you drive safely. But allstate actually helps you drive safely. With drivewise. It lets you know when you go too fast. And brake too hard. With feedback to help you drive safer. Giving you the power to actually lower your cost. Unfortunately, it cant do anything about that. Now that you know the truth. Are you in good hands . During that election, donald trump told us he could shoot somebody on fifth avenue and get away with it and he has consistently since he won been selling out the American People. Hes been selling out working people. Hes been selling out our l values. Hes been selling out national security. On this issue with ukraine, hes been selling out our democracy. Paul california senator Kamala Harris at this weeks debate sounding a familiar refrain from President Trumps opponents that hes a threat to american democracy. In her new book, kim strassel argues that some of the president s harshest critics present a threat of their own as the socalled resistance violates norms, due process and the rule of law in their aa tempt to take him down. Kim is the author of resistance at all costs which is out this week. Kim, whats the central argument of your book. Central argument, much like you just said is that ever since donald trump was elected weve had this group of people that utterly rejects the notion that donald trump is a legitimate president. They think hes an objecting pieoccupier ofthis office and te because hes this threat to the country that they themselves are allowed to cross political boundaries and break certain standards in their effort to open posoppose him and resist h. Weve seen it in an array of things but its doing longterm damage to the country. Paul give me some examples. Great example, the lack of faith right now in the department of justice and the fbi and i cite polls in the book, pointing outs ther pointie huge numbers of americans that no longer trust the fbi to do the right thing. Paul this goes back to the 2016 campaign attempt and we think there was misuse of the fisa court for example to investigate the trump campaign. Directly related to jim comey, the decision to launch a Counter Intelligence investigation into a sitting president ial campaign. That alone inspired a lot of americans to forget whether or not what kind of abuse of the president , just that. Also take our Senate Confirmation process in the wake of brett kavanaugh. Youve watched washington as long as i have paul longer. Where do we go from here . Hour most recently, we were talking about this earlier in the show, this potential that youre now using impeachment as a partisan political tool. I keep telling my friends on the left, lets say joe biden wins the election next year but republicans take back the house. Do we really want an environment where the first thing they do is launch articles of impeachment . Paul now, you know, you i covered the board hearings way back when so these Supreme Court fights have been horrible for a long time. Oh, yeah, theyre nasty. Paul how much of this he predates trump . I remember a lot of democrats saying george w. Bush wasnt legitimate because of the al gore fights and how much of this is actually unique to trump . Well, i think you have to say some of its unique to trump. Obviously weve always had physician afisticuffs in wash a. Washington. Have we ever had a situation where the federal democracy is leaking information on a daily basis. Paul do you think thats happened to a greater degree regarding trump. I dont think there was any he question. Do you think watching kavanaugh was equivalent to clarence thomas. Paul the thomas thing was really vicious. One of the things i talked about is standards and protocols or regulation thats are violated to lay them out. When have you the minority member of the Senate Judiciary committee withholding this information until after the nominee is completed has completed their hearings, when you have members of the committee saying theyre going to release confidential sensitive Committee Information in violation of the rules because they have to do it to stop donald trump and this nominee, when you have liberal senators deputizing the fbi to pass judgment. These are new things, new rubicons that have been crossed. Paul are the democrats going to impeach. There is no question. Paul we have to take one more break. When we come back, hits and misses of the week. Orlando isnt just the theme park capital of the world, it also has the highest growth in manufacturing jobs in the us. He quotes an eminent economist who dispenses after race ms like dont play check ors in the chess world, but it turns out he is a figment of Peter Navarros imagination, and ron varv is an anagram of navarro. If you go to the bookstore and you see Peter Navarro in the fiction section, dont be surpriseed. [laughter] paul kim. Raise your hand if you have a dishwashers that takes hours and also does not clean your dishes, so my hit goes to the Competitive Enterprise Institute which got a petition going to convince the Energy Department to put together a rule that would relax efficiency standards and unleash washing machines on dirt again. [laughter] and so the manufacturers are pushing back on this but, you know what . This rule doesnt tell them they cant keep making their horrible machines, just that they have of the freedom to make one that somebody actually might want to buy. Give us our lightbulbs, our washing machines, our freedom. Paul jason . I have a miss for former president barack obama. This week demand justice, which is a progressive group, tried to take a leap out of President Trumps book and put forward a short list for Supreme Court nominees for the next democratic president , but none of president well, only two appellate judges made by president obama made the list even though he appointed 55 judges paul only 2 of 55 . Right. Because its mostly activists, professors, are liberal lawyers, and so this is arguably a vote of no confidence by some on the left in president obamas judicial picks. Paul wow. Is that rule on dish washers going to make it . Its getting very positive response, so we can hope. Paul okay, all right. Good, cool. And remember, if you have your own hit or miss, tweet it to us at jes on je e r onxtraordin. Madison, great to see you, have a great weekend. Appreciate it.
