Reporter good evening here in nassau they are really breathing a sigh of relief because the stop was far enough to the north that they didnt receive many of the effects of Hurricane Dorian. Just gusty wind, rain as well, but 100 miles from where i am, thats where dorian first made landfall a category 5, 185mile an hour sustained winds, gusts you can believe this, over 220 miles per hour. Thats the estimate, and from what i saw with my eyes today, i can believe it because the damage and what i am seeing on the ground there reminded me of ef4 and 5 tornado, just the way that the debris was stacked and homes were just blown away. Even though the coast guard from the United States has been out here, shuttling people back and fourth to the island, taking the worst injured and those in the most need here to nassau and there has been some aid a small amount at least getting to that island but if you see things here you can tell theres still a lot of standing water. The older homes that maybe arent wellbuilt or as strong as the new, larger homes, those likely are either a loss, or nearly catastrophically damaged but the bigger mansions appeared to fare a lotbuilding codes andn materials better, but even those took a battering and its not surprising when you think about the power of this storm abdomen also the surge. You can see the water on the land there around the entire island the airport is still covered in water so its going to be a very tricky situation to get aid to that island because it is in the middle of the atlantic and a lot of that is still on that island right now. What are you seeing now that some people moved off the island are they completely full or not that full because people opted not to leave . A lot of people are reaching out to me on social media after they saw the video, and theyre asking if i had flown over a certain key, or a certain island , and thats because they had family or friends that stayed there, so a lot of folks decided to stay and thats often the case in a hurricane unfortunately and i tell people this all the time when i go and talk to people right after a hurricane, that rode it out, as you were, not one person ive ever talked to say it was a good idea. They wish they would have left and unfortunately sometimes it takes going through that and surviving to understand just how terrifying this experience is and unfortunately this is a storm that moved so slowly these folks were dealing with 180mile per hour winds for well over a day to two days and of course grand bahama, which we havent been able to get to because of the proximity of the storm yet its likely a repeat of what youre seeing right there.
