>> bob mueller could only be terminated for good cause. frankly, it's unimaginable to me that bob would do anything that would give rise to good cause. >> other democrats -- they questioned if the special counsel could bring an obstruction of justice case against the president for firing james comey. >> if the president orders the attorney general to halt a criminal investigation for personal reasons, would that be prohibited under your theory? >> i think it would be a breach of the president's duties to faithfully execute the law. it would be an abuse of power. >> he revealed that the president reach out to possibly join his legal team in june 2017. the conversation also turn to the special counsel. >> he was interested in that and wanted to know what i thought about him mueller's integrity. i said that bob is a straight shooter. >> reporter: barr has served as attorney general for george w. bush. >> i am in a position in life where i can do the right thing and not really care about the consequences. >> on reports that the president was directed to fire comey, barr said that they operated largely unchecked. >> are there rules on how you can do counterintelligence investigations? >> i believe there are. >> if you want to open one up against the president, are there any checks and balances? >> not outside the fbi. >> a bar called text messages between peter strock and lisa page, inappropriate. >> i was shocked when i saw them. >> please get to the bottom of it. we are relying on you to clean this place up. >> reporter: barr will investigate whether there was abuse during the 2016 campaign, when they used in anti- trump dossier for trump campaign aide. >> lou: thank you. barr will be back before the hearing committee tomorrow morning. 9:30 a.m. for day two of his confirmation hearing. joining me now, former reagan white house political director, and analyst your impressions of barr and how he did today. by the way, it was a joke that those people would be insisting on impartiality, a lack of bias as they have put on one of the most horrible circuses in the hearings. >> i think every answer he gave was a correct one. he made it very clear that he reported to the president that he would not come in with preconceived notions. he argued the points of view that the immigration line needed to be rewritten. it would not be rewritten without the security of the law. >> i think the dems, it's interesting, they backed off. they are obviously leery of entangling camille harris. she did not show up with that nonsense today because she's looking at a nominee that would come i think she understands he deserves respect and to treat them otherwise would create problems for her, instantly. one of the things i was disturbed by is that barr said all the right things as far as i was concerned about the barrier on the border. part of the larger issue border security. the larger issue of immigration reform itself. stopping illegal immigration. i would've liked to hear him say very clearly that there is no independence issue here. the president brought him into do a job, he understands the role of the president. he said there's no checks on the fbi. that's nonsense. the fact of the matter is this president is a check of the fbi. he can clean the agency up and must do so through his attorney general. that agency, rancid, corrupt, toxic from the top to the bottom of its leadership. >> william barr in his earlier service always belon believed ia strong executive. he made it clear that he is part of the executive branch. i keep hearing them say is the people's lawyer. he is appointed by the president to serve the country. he will do that. your points are very valid. i think he has to clean up the fbi. we need the first-order is to get the mueller report taking care of. >> would there be any reason for this president to fire this attorney general. it would be a failure to clean up the fbi. this agency has destroyed itself. >> no question about that. it's back to the days of j edgar hoover. it's a dark period of the fbi. i think overall he did very well. it will be interesting to see where we go. as diane feinstein said, it is time to end these endless committee hearings and confirmation hearings because a bunch of two bit senators want airtime. >> there is no reason he can't finish tomorrow and be confirmed next week. it just needs to be done that quickly. >> lou: the white house in the midst of this, the president is governing, the world's only superpower, deeply complex, profoundly challenging. right now, he doesn't appear to be getting help from anyone in the senate. does not seem to be getting much help from the house. it is an extraordinary period of time in which he has to contend with robert mueller and put up with the nonsense. >> in the new york times, washington post, and mainstream media. the reality is, some of these people need to step forward and argue his points of view and defend him. >> lou: how is he doing on border security and ending this nonsense of pelosi and schumer that they will not do anything to protect the nation and ensure the safety of american citizens. >> he has made his position clear. it's up to them to bring him a bill that has is $5.6 billion. when they do that, he will act on it. he doesn't need to negotiate every day. he doesn't need to make points every day. >> lou: what about bringing in moderate democrats? life line screening. the power of prevention. call now to learn more. >> lou: a new poll, major poll showing support for president trump's border wall at an all-time high. abc news washington post finding 42% of americans surveyed one a wall on our southern border. that's up from 34% last year. this, as the radical dems refused to attend the meeting with the president to talk about border security. reportedly six of the dems include charlie chris, david scott, abigail, scott peters. none of the leadership was invited. joining me now, congressman sean duffy of wisconsin. he is a member of the house financial services committee. it is great to have you with us. start with shutdown. i don't know that i have ever heard of a white house inviting members without their leadership, what you make of that. >> i've never heard of members being invited to the white house and turning the offer down. i was in the offer for six years with barack obama. >> i know. i cannot imagine these members would not go over and sit down and have a conversation with the president. >> they have dug their heels and so far, they do not care about the migrants dying on the dangerous journey, the rates that take place of little girls, or the drugs flowing into my communities. where the gang members, or the convicts, they don't care. they care about a political win because they hate president trump. it's too bad. >> lou: as i have said on this broadcast repeatedly, there is only one reason why nancy pelosi and chuck schumer want to deny the president the construction of that wall. it would be, because that is the only major promise he made in 2016, that he has not already fulfilled. and they know, that if he fulfills it, in my opinion he will win anyway, he would be absolutely unstoppable in 2020 if he succeeds in bringing that wall. >> i know listeners know where you stand. but should i believe chuck and nancy or donald trump. if you don't know who to believe, as the men and women on the border. the one who are charged with keeping us safe. the say no we need a wall, we need more boots, donald trump is white, when donald trump says your races, 52% of the border patrol is hispanic. they need to talk about what they're up against to keep america safe. then they say icu is tell me the truth. that's why they're going in our direction because we are right on the policy. >> let's turn to free, fair trade, balance trade, reciprocal trade, which the president has pushed and is now getting the world's attention. we see europe moving in the direction of the trump administration on this issue. balance trade should be something the international monetary fund, the world bank, every major regional associati association, whether it is the european union, which is a little more than association know, despite what's happening with brexit. this is a world that needs balance trade. i think most americans would be stunned to know how little is in the arsenal of the president, in order to demand, insist, and follow true on balance trade. >> that's right. it's something you talked about a lot as well, lou. the president doesn't have the greatest tools to make sure we have free trade and fair trade. this thursday, i will drop a bill called the reciprocal trade act. it will allow the president to say that if you have a 10% tariff on our autos and we only have a 2% tariff on yours than will give the president authority to raise the tariff. once we do, the president can reduce both tariffs as well. there is a 60% tariff in europe on wisconsin butter. america has a 3.8% tariff when they import. more than 200% of the american terror. we want to not just have free trade, we want to make it fair. we are trying to give the president the tools that make sure we are not robbed anymore. this is about the american worker. let's make sure we can produce products and sell them around the world without one hand tied behind her back. instead of letting the rest of the world walk is because of their tariffs. then come to our markets and selling compete against our workers. it's unfair. we will give the president the tools necessary to not just by, but when the war for the american worker. >> lou: where are the koch brothers? battling their own influx of migrants were to stave off terrorist. currently, there are 65 countries that have completed or have walls under construction. only 16 countries had walls at the time of the fall of the berlin wall. in total, there are at least 77 walls or barriers built worldwide. forty-five countries have proposals to build border walls. since 2015, more than 800 miles of border in sarah, good to have you with us. your thoughts about first, the wall. we are looking at empirical evidence of every kind. were told by the border patrol, by customs, by everyone that walls work. they want to wall. we look around and there are 65 nations that have built them. the walls work. yet, nancy pelosi and chuck schumer are deniers. >> they are deniers based on politics. this is all political for them. it's not about national security. >> lou: so they don't care about the country whatsoever. >> absolutely, this point. if they are denying what is blatantly in our face, statistics about people crossing the border. let me give you an example. i was in texas last week. i went on to report from the border. i was in an area near the rio grande valley sector patrolled by border patrol. their resources are slim so they have them scattered throughout the area. it's a heavy sector, heavy traffic flows. i was sitting on private property of a texan who owns land near the rio grande valley. across the board here come two men crossing the rio grande river coming up through. i went up to them and was speaking to them in spanish. they had no idea what i was saying. i realize they do not speak spanish. i asked if they spoke english and they settle little. i asked where they were from. they were from bangladesh. these two men were trafficked all the way from bangladesh, through dubai, through brazil with special-interest aliens. the reason dhs qualifies them as that and it was qualified under the obama administration come is because bangladesh had issues with al qaeda and islamic state. within 15 minutes of me sitting there in a desolate area, two men from bangladesh across the border. they're talking to me. no identifiers, no backpacks, they're coming to turn themselves in. >> you been covering the border for a long while. many of us. the idea that the president has to explain to the american people why a border wall is necessary, why it is critically important that we stop the export from mexico to our country the deadliest drugs of the world whether it's methamphetamine, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, or fentanyl. mean, were looking at weapons of mass destruction without any question. yet, schumer, the democratic, the radical dems are indifferent to the deaths that occur every year. 70000 of them from opioid and synthetic opioids in this country. what in the world is wrong with this country that we have to explain to people, you really need to protect yourself, your border, and your nation. >> it's unconscionable what the drug cartels and the criminal trafficking organizations have done. not only to our country but the people there trafficking and the threat they pose to our entire hemisphere. as the first time we have a president at least since the bush administration, president who is willing to do the right thing. a president who's willing to put his money where his mouth is. to say look, i'm here to protect this country. thus my duty as commander-in-chief. i'm here to protect the united states. a border wall is necessary. we are sovereign nation. we have a right to do this. this is the reason why william barr during his testimony was so accurate when he said look, we need to change some of these laws. they figured out our loopholes. we have people pouring across the border. we don't always know who they are. we only know about the people we catch, not about the people we don't catch. >> obviously one of the most absurd and tragic loopholes is that in ms13 gang members traveling with the child has to be wrong side for a long time and feeling the heat. the general public has probably spoken up loudly. i know a number of people that i know have been putting in numerous phone calls into their congressional leaders or senators to put the pressure on them to actually stand firm with the presidents, with this government shutdown. i have friends who are feeling it in the checkbook. they're having to ask parents and grandparents to help financially. but, they do understand that if the republicans don't stand firm with the president, then our nation is going to be at a loss. i don't know if we will ever be able to recover. >> i think you're right. if this president does not persist in the trade dispute with china seeking balance. were talking $330 billion in record trade deficit with china. even as he is trying to bring to bear all of the tools at his disposal, to reach balance trade. we cannot continue to permit 600 billion in chinese theft of our intellectual property and technology. this is madness. he's the only president in 30 years who has had the guts to challenge the chinese. it's remarkable. >> it really is. it's exciting to have a fighter, like president trump finally in the white house. it's going to be imperative that we have leaders such as senator mcconnell and kevin mccarthy will stand side-by-side with him. it is absolutely asinine to sit there and watch senator schumer and nancy pelosi, and other leaders of the democrat party stand there and look into the camera look into the eyes of the american public in boldfaced lie constantly. just because they do not like our president. >> they do not like the president. and they attempt to delegitimize him. they do so now is they absolutely are driving towards the version of this president. whether our free and fair trade and balance trade, reciprocal trade. vice president pence put it this way, they are on registered foreign agents lobbying against the president of the united states in support
