"the wall street journal," jon hilsenrath global economics editor at journal here and from rosecliff mike murphy welcome all we talk about the super bowl match up for shut down like talking about a shutdown government and patriots to super bowl could be going to show by memory. >> hard as new yorker to root for patriots eagles hard for republicans and democrats what is going on. >> isn't it weird every quote that is used is almost like a layup for new shows, because we have republican president this time around, you could have a democrat saying republicans are saying, last time the opposite was true quotes exactly the same. >> exactly the same really is remarkable to think messaging is so -- the issues are not i think that is one of the things we have to remember despite the fact there you know lobbying complaints aboutch other we have to take a look what president is doing keeping a lot of things open, parks open, not make being as much statement a lot of employees have to go on furlough negotiations isn't about same thing not talking both spending one spending the other one talking about immigration. >> deal speaking of president to let you know what is coming up this morning from white house sr., advisory for strategic communications mercedes among those joining us this former -- red lobster ceo on robert wolff democratic side from robert wolf 32 advisories fourn ceo used to be advisory to president obama the judge coming up to talk about items. >> top story talking about, government shutdown, heading initially into third day, after bipartisan group failed to come up with a compromise over weekend on spending immigration reform, speaking to rosters last night arizona senator republican jeff flake said he is hopeful to resolve impasse by midday today, whether they have a procedural vote scheduled in senate, on chamber floor the senate top democratic republican leaders trading blame for the shutdown. >> more -- own week kaththan we end hopefully, we can get it solved by noon. >> because the president wouldn't resolve months of ongoing negotiations over massive issues, in one brief meeting before i democratic leader everything he wants -- my friend across the aisle shut down the government for hundreds of millions of americans. >> the president miss take yes for an answer, until he does, it is trump shutdown. >> there you go, so i think we should start with you on this, i don't know if you have data to back you up who takes blame trump shutdown verses schumer shutdown. >> working to benefit schumer shutdown the one going to stick what are american people going to think what i have seen so far, the republicans are standing by the president saying fight for us, the american people, democrats sticking with democrats saying this dreamers thing totally unfair, deal with daca, independents i think saying enough is enough. let's just get it together, negotiate and get things done for the american people something has to give president willing to negotiate on daca has had both sides together, but that is a separate issue from keeping the government open. >> you know that is interesting here, that as to market has run up so much in january, we get the government shutdown on friday we come in monday morning, we are don't even have a sell-off i think tells you the large market participants looking at this whether done today at noon or tomorrow, i have the is going to get done not going to -- >> i agree i think a washington story not a rest of america story the market isn't selling off, when we looked how shutdowns tend to affect the economy we see little imprint on economic data activity. >> does timeframe matt a little bit. >> if drags on a couple weeks could accumulate but still you the last time we had a shutdown more than 10 days 2013, 4% growth out of economy we had one of the best quarters we've had in whole expansion, so i don't think americans are frankly going to pay a lot of tonation to this. >> interesting. >> i am not sure going to pay attention but i think one more proof point why american people are fed up with congress, that i think totally separate from how they fell about president congress gridlock not working together people look at president whether they like him or not as a separate issue, and so i think, that one of the things we are going to see is that the continued distrusted of the establishment is going to derail how things are midterm. >> play into that outsider. >> focus groups how people talk about the president, they see him as fighter despite faction might go to florida on weekend saying hands-off congress do your job, on left looking at saying you are taking another vacation, but you know he has been taking meetings there talked about having conversations with paul ryan mitch mcconnell other meetings this weekend, so you know the question is how is he going to -- president -- i am not sure that is going to happen. >> you are right he thinks he can win politically on this but the democrats also think they have leverage o could lead to longer shutdown mulvaney for a moment omb director on the shows over weekend, talking about the democrats you posturing over shutdown here he is. >> almost as if they are so beholden to left wing they can't give the president even a victory on keeping the government open. i really do believe that at heart here, there was interest by some folks in the democrat party to deny the president sort of the victory lap of the anniversary of inauguration a chance to talk about success of the tax bill success of the economy, jobs, if you go several days i think other democrats want to see the president give the state of the union during a shutdown. >> that is interesting argument i have seeing both sides i will saying one thing, that stands out we talked about this on the show friday, is that yes, it does takeaway the argument about good news in the economy the market that is kind of the point to some degree would come back to bite white house they would rather four of us talking about a stock market hovering record highs and economy that is kind of going all cylinders from shutdown now he focus switches off positive economic news right now, but i think, the main point is for everyone seems to agree this is a short term event that we can this will get resolved someone will give in probably both sides a little bit gets resolved we get back to focusing on -- >> i wonder. >> -- go ahead. >> what i was going to say focus switches if market switches its focus right? so if stock prices keep going up our headlined is going to be stock prices keep rising even though a government shutdown, so you know, that is why i am interested to see how market behaves. >> nothing for the money back an futures down 49 dow futures fost mort part doing nothing this morning part of the story, you know, mike brought up how this is going to be a short term event seems thinking short term there was political back-and-forth yesterday they didn't get something done last night they didn't, there is the possibility this could drag on a little bit, what is your thought on that. >> out is no indication, that there really willing to compromise because talking about two separate issues, i know, it is i know republicans have gone out there said we will talk daca certain things willing to negotiate on so long as i give us the border wall the democrats are saying not willing to negotiating on budget and spending unless we are going to talk daca apple and orange considerations i don't see how they let up both making statements saying we're not coming to table until we deal with issue. >> mitch mcconnell promise daca/funding vote, by february 8 if they don't get things done by then, seemed the concession. >> when this happened in 2013, i can remember looking researching seeing what is going to close down how is this going to taken into account me business i think people have got past that, really the people getting affected are military personnel i don't think either side really wants to affect them, so i think that is why, both sides have to give in a little bit. >> larger point on that military personnel or federal workers history shows they get for what it is worth painful they get money back, congress is not going to not vote -- >> we have to remember found a way to shut down without shutting government down, let's not forget most in this weekend, a lot of -- personnel declared serb servicessential s. >> any one essential employee -- >> in a moment more news we them. last night very different tone, back to business as usual specially on the red carpet, color has returned, there weren't a lot of time's up buttons around. don't want to say time's up on time's has been down this year, the worst, i think, since the early 90's, so why it's hard to, you know, say there's a cause and effect, it's hard not to say that they have done pretty good job of turning >> the levels of the collaboration of this corruption is unfathomable. it's disgusting. all the way up from the top of the fbi to the justice department, and then to hillary clinton being okay with all of this, i mean, we are talking about a woman now who we know destroyed over 33,000 emails, used bleach bit, destroyed cell phones and now we are finding out that this happened and it was five months of text messages supposedly that the fbi can't recover. >> right. >> i think hillary clinton has becoming irrelevant as time passes but what is not becoming irrelevant is that we are looking at the fbi, which the american people are supposed to trust as nonpartisan. how do we look at the fbi and how doe do we expect them to rebuild trust and even reshuffling what's in there because so many people are distraught that they can't trust the fbi? >> amy. >> yes, i would agree with that actually. i mean there were so many good fine men and women that are fbi agents so this is -- this is terrible on multiple levels because it also damages their good name, this is something that i believe is completely frightening, we probably need to maybe even start the fbi all over again from a clean sleight. >> amy, i want to ask you about one of lee's points here which is that hillary clinton is irrelevant, what do you think about that? do you think that that's the case that she really isn't the focus of our politics anymore and shouldn't be? >> no, absolutely not because this set the precedent for the future people running for office. i think that this is something that we still need to continue to investigate. the fact that james comey even wrote a memo ahead of time and to exonerate her, i mean, there were so many pieces to this that are corrupt. i don't think that she's irrelevant at all. >> what do you mean, amy, the fbi needs to start over with clean sleight or we need to start them over with a clean sleight? >> well, there are certain government agencies that, i believe, have become too large. there's not enough accountability and there are certain people who pretty much feel that they are above the law, if you could start the fbi all over from the ground up, that might be a consideration. >> amy, it's mike murphy. you know, i think a point that needs to come out to the american people here is that the fbi is supposed to be a bipartisan group and it's bad for both sides. one side doesn't win or lose with a corrupt fbi, so we need to know regardless of what side you're on that the fbi is going to do their job in a bipartisan way and i think however we get there, whether it's starting it over or cleaning house with what's there now it's very important and it's a point that shouldn't put the american people to pick which side you're on, everybody should be on the same side with that? >> oh, absolutely, that's the whole point, to make sure that the fbi is filled with people that are fair, fair, honest and balance and not people who have been there for so many years that they feel that they're above the law and, you know, if you have people at the top that are setting the precedents for those going into the fbi, what do you think is going to happen? >> all right, let me get a take from you, amy, on a another story that developed over weekend, the various women's marchs in a number of different cities, we had them here in new york and really all across the country both saturday and sunday, before i ask you about it from las vegas, planned parenthood ceo richards addressing white women directly. listen to this. >> women, listen up, we have to do better, we have to do better. it is not up to women of color to save this country from itself, that's on all of us. >> amy, quick take on that. >> wow, well, does she realize, though, that the women of color are the ones that actually go into the doors and seek the most abortions, that's where they make of the majority of the money, i'm not exactly sure who she's calling out on. these women's marchs have become nothing but political -- political gains, i guess, if you will, filled with women who are just angry, i don't even know that some of them know why they are angry, why would anyone take some of the women seriously when they are dressing like body parts and carrying signing with vulgar words on them. >> i would follow up on that but i do have breaking news, amy, as well that we want to get to for just a moment, so thank you for that. the breaking news is a business story that's coming in, gearing up to acquire juno therapeutics, juno up. how about that, mike? >> second deal that we have seen so far this morning. remember celgene already owned 10%. this wasn't absolute surprise but they are paying up for it which is something that you have to pay attention to. you will have to pay more attention. this is the first of a lot more deals. >> quick, we had heard maybe there would be more m&a activity some argued by tax reform, your thoughts? >> well, that was just the point that i was going to take to mike, not only tax reform but stock market prices at record highs and still very low interest rates, seems like an environment that's really right for a lot of deal-making. >> i would think. jon: could drive stocks higher. mike: absolutely. you're starting to see it. we are a few weeks into this and we are seeing deals. more and more people will come to the table and realize that the tax bill will put more money in pocket and be able to either, a, go out and spend money or b, use stock high price as currency. jon: there are also particulars in the deal which give companies an incentive to go out and buy assets that are already out there because the tax treatment for owning as an asset that's already been depreciated is favorable and i do think we see more on this. >> breaking 9 billion-dollar deal that just came in. let me thank amy, i had to cut you off but thanks a lot. >> thank you. >> you might be surprised by the number of american who is are hiding accounts from their mates, oh-oh. tim tebow, field of dreams continues, find out which probaseball team has invited the former nfl star to spring training? might be the mets. plus a big week here, of course, on mornings with maria, you wonder why are we stuck with mcconnell this morning, maria is traveling. the most powerful people will be speaking to her in davos, world economic forum, coverage begins tomorrow in mornings with maria, big interviews lined up during the week. you don't want to miss that. we will be right back after a quick break. >> we are now less than a month away i'm told from valentine's day and it is time to, well, in our own special way celebrate love relationships and commitment but turns out this morning that there may be a hidden issue that many couples are not aware of so we have assigned this story to lauren simonetti who joins us now with the details. good morning, lauren. lauren: i have been investigating them in the break. first of all, credit cards.com out with survey, 15 million of us are holding back financial information whether it's a credit card account or a bank account that our spouse or live-in romantic partner does not know about. that's a lot of people that are basically lying. why are we embarrassed about 40-dollar spin class or 6-dollar latte or maybe we are using that bank account to fund something that we shouldn't be doing? >> sounds like a personal example -- [laughter] lauren: how do we feel about being lied to? this is a key question. >> yes. lauren: 31% of respondents say financial infidelity is worst than being cheated on physically. >> really? >> come on. >> that's probably exactly right. lee: half of the people do cheat. >> the other side that 70% don't. that's probably right. those are the people who are doing the wrong thing. lauren: jon, you are being really quiet here. the shares of halliburton up about 2% of the premarket. as a stream that is a stream that is burning after the close in europe as we look at global markets we have not seen much movement in the said that he will join us and show how the legislation is impacting his business. the government shutdown now for the third day the rhetoric ratcheting up for leaders across the aisle on both sides with no signs at this point a compromise. you really care about the big issues. in other important matters. that we had been negotiating. i would like to bring to the floor and they will stop the filibuster in the shutdown. and let that negotiators get back to work. for that reason i object. we are joined with how the trump white house is reacting to all this. there is a procedural vote in the senate set for midday at noon and then if that gets 60 votes they might vote to the government back up and from where you sit or stand this money. are we any closer to a deal. i think this morning is going to be critical for the ongoing negotiations before this vote at noon. from the white house and its perspective. the democrats they could not shut down present trump's booming economy so they decided instead to shut down the government this has a very negative repercussions. it impacts our troops into the military families. these are issues that the democrats should be standing with republicans on. in instead in hopes if we can see resolution in that area. that makes no sense at that point. as of the president has said in good faith we will continue on on the issue of responsible immigration reform. if we do it in that order. i think we can find much success. if the democrats don't unite with republicans. i think this is a good thing for us referring to the political ramifications or lack thereof of a shutdown. should people than be digging in for the possibility of what could be a link the shutdown this time around. we look at the polls and 54 percent of americans they believe you should not shut down the government over the daca deal. you should separate the two. that is what the president wants. he wants the government to reopen. it interrupts maintenance operations for the military. the national guardsmen they cannot trade we are talking about impacting our military troops this is impacting our national security. they have made the choice of saying let's put on a lawful and great immigrants ahead without the funding the thousand of workers remain on furlough. they are soon going without pay. vice president penn's speaking with military members near the syrian border this weekend. let's listen to the vice president. you deserve better. your family should not had to worry for one minute about whether you are going to get paid. as you serve in the uniform of the united states. so know this. your president or vice president and the american people are not going to put up with it. the military members won't go without pay once the shutdown ends. everybody else is losing out on pay isn't that true. there are the carryover funds from the agencies to make sure that there is not this payment stop gap. this creates uncertainty for military families. have to understand is live paycheck to paycheck. they don't know when the paycheck is coming and is very troubling and so i think for the president and for republicans it is very clear they deserve better than having to be caught in the middle of this political firestorm and it's really time for the democrats to unite with republicans. and stop the schumer shutdown. we have to prioritize. for us priority is a national security issue. as you know with the daca deal. it's very complicated. and here president trump is saying i'm willing to take the lead on this. i'm willing to work with democrats i believe senator mcconnell has promised a border security vote by the eighth of february as part of what could be a deal get this procedural vote in the senate. but that vote could come at least according to what we hear last night without the president's support. what is the white house's view on that. what we are attempting to do and it's working with senator mcconnell. we've another four weeks where we have government open. they are negotiating in good faith. the democrats continue to say no. at this point what we need to do is to reopen this government. the other priority is to push for a two deal budget cap. we want long-term budgets. to another short-term spending bill this is what impacts any sort of long-term readiness for our military and does impact our national security and as one of the things the present trumps he have already submitted his budget months ago. congress failed to act on the budget. when the next budget will be released and we still have it passed the 200018 budget. the idea of short-term spending bills. it definitely in term -- impacts long-term planning. maria is going to be there and she will be doing the show from there for the rest of the week. i believe his remarks are scheduled for friday if the government shutdown will the president still travel to dallas. that is where the president is at this moment. he has been talking to republican leaders constantly to make this a priority obviously that is the first focus that we head from this white house and we hope that the democrats work with in line with the republicans. at this point the focus is to reopen the government and that is where we stand. remember our coverage does continue or really begin tomorrow for the world economic forum. in just a moment the amazon effect will be speaking with the ceo of red lobster about how that restaurant is changing in the whole industry is changing. magic secrets revealed. how about that. it's all coming up next.
