roku comes out today, this is ipo, priced 12 to 14. moved way higher than that. 23.50, trading way above expectations. of course you use this to stream sources like netflix, amazon, all things cool and fun. we'll see what happens if it holds to these kinds of gains. what a run-up. lauren, david, back to you. lauren: let's bring in the panel. john petrides, and veronica daguerre. we have 3.1% gd growth. has donald trump made economy great again? is this for real? >> better-than-expected results with the revision. we have a steady strong economy. it hasn't been blockbuster but steady and good. we have good job numbers. we have good consumer spending. consumer is largely driving this economy still. although we have really bright spots when it comes to business investment. we're seeing businesses feeling more confident. now, you can only imagine how things would be depending on how we get the tax reform. what that final, what that is going to look like. if we get something that is going to be even more favorable to companies, lower tax rates, we could see even more growth. lauren: john, the magic number is ambitious but with tax reform maybe we get to 5% gdp growth? i don't remember the last time we saw something like that. i think, john, though the issue is right now while things are improving and we have 3.1% gdp it doesn't feel like that to so many americans. >> i think that's right. i think veronica is exactly right. the report was good. it wasn't perfect but i think right now good is perfect and again if you get tax reform that will help stocks a lot higher. it may not feel that on main street but wall street will look at earnings, how companies are producing, what types of cash flow companies are producing in two weeks that earnings season begins and i think we'll see a healthy and solid q3 results. lauren: speaking the third quarter, the current quarter, we had so many hurricanes hit southern part of the country, we saw effect on job market. do you think hurricanes will temporarily dent gdp? >> they could temporarily but if you look at things like first quarter this could be good news for the economy because companies will spending, consumers will be spending even more as they rebuild. weird to find a silver lining in all the destruction but it is out there. lauren: that is argument you make after disaster, whole rebuilding effort that helps the economy. john, what was behind the latest gdp print? what is driving the economy? is it a little bit consumer or mostly business investment? >> i think the mane driver was business investment. let's see reflection. the gdp is backward looking. let's see the results in the upcoming earnings season. market is forward-looking. we'll see if it prices out what the future holds. lauren: this burning economy at this point, churning along is it for real, we real did i do. thank you very much. david: united behind tax reform. high-stakes battle looming on capitol hill as the president pushes forward his own tax plan. connell mcshane live at with the latest from d.c. connell. reporter: we started to have this conversation yesterday when i was out with the president in indianapolis, how do you get the package passed with the framework introduced? early in capitol hill the conversations have started. i give you two things to think about. one is timing. the other numbers. kevin brady house ways and means committee talked about timing. the budget has to pass first, if and when that happens you can use reconciliation from tax reform so you stay away possibility of a filibuster it. we'll watch that next couple weeks. that is certainly timing. now numbers, as president tries to line up some support for this, if one or two republicans are safe, hypothetically not on board you start wondering if any democrats can be con striped to be on board -- convinced to be on board and house majority leader was asked that today. watch. >> we don't need democratic support but i want democratic support. this is not a tax plan for republicans. this is tax plan for americans. reporter: you know, much that discussion at least so far talking about bringing it all together has surrounded this idea that has been proposed where you do away with the state and the local deductions. a lot of people fired up on capitol hill about that even today. watch this. >> there are 40 or 50 republican congressman from well-to-do suburban districts in high taxed states, new york, california, new jersey, pennsylvania, illinois, maryland, whose constituents will be clobbered by removing state and local deductibility, clobbered. reporter: clobbered, say it between to make your point there if you're senator schumer. that is how this debate is being framed, and we have heard from some of the republin coressman, david, that senator schumer no doubt referringo, likes of peter king, says he is concerned abouthat. some others sdhe same today. th is certainly something we'll watch as thedavid: we cane can ask one of them coming up. connell thanks. here is claudia tenney republican congresswoman from new york, financial services committee member. claudia, thank you for coming in. i have to ask because this is a key issue not just with democrats but also with republicans like yourself, you come from a high-taxed state, is the elimination of the deduction of state and local taxes a deal-breaker on this tax plan for you? >> i don't think it's a deal breaker. i think it is an important issue. you have to remember as very high-taxed state, over 30% of the filers nationwide are using the state and local tax deduction. in new york state alone, over 50% are in the 200 plus bracket. 44% are in the 50 to 100% bracket. you're talking about mid did i, income taxpayers. it is an issue. we're doubling standard deduction, which will eliminate itemizers around provide relief, put more in paychex of taxpayers. we're looking in new york on average, we'll be giving over $5,000 more in cash back to taxpayers of their hard-earned money. there are pluses and minuses. david: on high-end, elimination of amt. >> alternative minimum tax. david: exactly. on both high-end, low end there are things to compensate for that but is there enough of a compensating factor from elements to take care of elimination of the deduction? >> looks like what will happen, see those in lower tax brackets, middle income taxpayers will receive the best benefit. that is part of the mission of the president. remember, he wants to help the middle class. he is not interested helping wealthier in our society. david: he is interested in growth. wealthy frankly do a lot of growing in this country. they invest money. if they're a small business they may be considered rich but they're pouring all of their money into their company. that creates jobs. >> right. but they're using a pass-through methodology. they're not doing personal income return -- they're doing personal income tax return but using a pass-through. a lot of deductions come into play even though it will be simplified. it's a concern for new yorkers especially in high taxed states. there is contra argument, by continuing to allow deductions we're enabling tax-and-spend addiction of governor cuomo for new york, tax-and-spend liberals here in new york who have driven jobs from our communities. david: their free spending habits are being subsidized by folks in texas and florida where there is no state income tax. >> i'm concerned about my middle income taxpayers, people like me who really need to have -- doubling the standard deduction could be a huge help for many of us. and plus just lowering the rate to such an extent, this is some of the largest tax cuts we've seen in a generation. it will be very historic. if we can get this done, maybe make some compromises on state and local tax deduction and pass the budget, republicans will be in great shape next year. we'll really see, i heard you talking about gdp and growth. i think you will see explosive gdp growth if we get this done an hopefully next year, sooner than that get obamacare repealed or replaced. david: we have to do tax cut this is year, so we can work it into our new tax form. congresswoman, there is one thing no controversy at all, that is what happened, very emotional moment on capitol hill today when both democrats and republicans stood together for majority whip steve scalise. he returned to the house floor first time since being gunned down in june. let's take a listen. >> starts with god.
